    Free weekender here. I don't even have 10 hours played yet but I've found myself forced to play SL because these types of games are only fun when you have a communicating squad and unfortunately that seems to be kind of rare, especially on public servers. I found this video very helpful.

      I also have only about 30 hours booked into HLL and have found myself taking on SL when the only units available to join, are not being led. I still think that despite my inexperience, taking on SL puts the unit in a better position. Then when you take on the SL role, it's amazing how quickly others in the squad get behind you if you just simply talk to them. The command comms channel is really quite intimidating, though!

  • @shamoralp

    I’ve never played as a squad leader yet, but I can say this: joining a squad (as a simple rifleman) with a SL who’s AT LEAST talking is a HUGE thing itself! So your idea about leading a squad as a SL is totally accurate I guess

      The worst part is if you play Ps5 you literally have a mic built in to your controller. Lol like there’s no excuse for simple communication. Granted sometimes I don’t wear a headset but you can atleast listen through the controller and give simple responses if need be. Lol

      Talkers are preferred, of course, but even ones who use the in-game comms consistently, and who place OP’s and build garries, are infinitely better than morons running a mic but neglecting most of the important stuff. (I have unfortunately known many such squad “leaders”…..) And not everyone always speaks the same language, particularly on European servers. I can forgive them for being quiet any day if they take care of the fundamentals.

    I naturally am a follower at heart. I had never attempted SL until recently (level 57). Honestly, it looked intimidating initially. I joined a match on the 24th Panzer server and our SL got frustrated and bailed mid game. After someone observed our SL was gone and began to panic, I automatically volunteered, began assignment support roles, relayed orders, gave positive support to the squad, and relayed orders from other SL’s and the commander. We got supplies and garri’s down and ended up winning the game 4-1 on Utah Beach. Our squad ended up defending a majority of the time and concluded the match with a defensive score well above 4,500. Needless to say, these are all great tips and have proven true for my first experience as SL and it did not disappoint. Thanks!

    One important note here is to take feedback and input serious. If team members ping/ mention enemy movements, than open the map and respond with pings/ icons. This give the member the feeling he delivered to the overall battle intell. Dont be afraid to send your members into battle and stay back, doing the stuff mentioned in the vid.
    Also scope with your bino's for the team, when you send them to a certain point. Often ppl sprint long ends and pay less attention to their surroundings let alone be able to respond fire when catched offguard. Spotting is to important to ignore!

    I think what really sucks is having to tell the Angel descended from heaven who decided to play Support to take the redeploy penalty to keep respawning so he can get more supplies.
    I know in a perfect world, every squad would put down one garrison, and the Commander would drop supplies where it's needed. But when that isn't the case, it means you have to run around building stuff all by yourself while the Support spends a fair amount of time in the deployment screen.
    I don't know how to remedy this, having two Support per squad would probably be overpowered, and the game already have so many roles you almost never see Riflemen out and about, which sucks when you're being attacked by tanks and the AT guy doesn't have enough rockets.
    One thing I think could work is, since the Garrison eats up 50/100 supplies, it'd be great if the Support guy could pick up the remaining 50 supplies, then join the squad leader to put up a second Garrison. Telling your squad you need Support is one thing, but telling the guy who does so to redeploy is even worse, so making the process a bit more streamlined, keeping you both in the action while doing your job would be great. The fact that the only way for the Support to help out once he has put down his supplies is to redeploy is so janky it almost feels like an oversight.

    With 40 hours playing the engineer and support class, i carefully observed other squad leaders how they played their role and last night for the very first time I implemented these tactics and skills as a leader
    Although I went 1 kill and 6 deaths, I ensured OP’s and garrisons were down for both my squad, team and commander, leaving the match with all 5 commends
    I have lot’s to learn but the experience as a squad leader role is absolutely rewarding! So i encourage anybody and everybody to give it a go!

    Excellent, necessary, and no-nonsense video, especially given the lack of any sort of in-game tutorials for this sort of thing! I find that, as a squad leader, the most daunting thing is definitely the Command VOIP channel. I find myself having sensory overload and unconsciously using it as a separate squad chat, all the while neglecting to direct my own squad competently! This is especially apparent when I find myself on those clan-owned servers as the short-straw opponents of the inevitably stacked and more organized clan team!
    Anyway, keep up the good work man! HLL needs more raw informational content videos, and you're doing a great job at fulfilling that niche!

    I damn love being SL, most SL rarely put Outposts down...i always get complimented about informing my squad when i put a new outpost down. Also helps with pushing the enemy. People do love a SL thats actually communicating with your fellow brothers. In my opinion, half the fun of this game is ACTUALLY working together with your squad to set up ambushes and layin fire down alleyways and buildings.

    Bro, I had the best game the other day as SL, I got commendations from the entire squad, lead us mostly on defense, and some short range patrols to take out enemy garrisons that were placed on our flanks. It was the most exhilarating game I've played. We were the only team building nodes, we were the only squad bothering to watch our rear and in the end we won. I wasn't even our squad leader for the first 1/4 of the game, I was building nodes with my friend on my squad, nobody was communicating at all. I noticed we did not have any OPs, and we did not have a SL, so ... I asked someone to take the kit. Nobody took the kit so I became SL because our squad didn't have one and nobody was talking.
    Soon as I took the SL kit and began giving the play by play and the plan, the squad all started squawking, and even cracking a few jokes... the SL is so important to the game being any fun guys.
    This was maybe the 10th time or so that I played as SL, all the other times I just reported tank and garrison locations and relayed what command wanted our squad to do.
    Your team WANTS to be told where to setup the MG, they want to know what the plan is. That's what they signed up for, to be in a battle and as long as you as SL communicate at all times and at least just pretend you know what you want, they'll follow you and they'll have a great time. Don't be afraid of the role, but do your best to be the SL, not only are SL's imperative to winning the game, an SL keeps the game fun and immersive. Your squadmates are playing because they want to be in a squad, they might be shy and not talk so it's up to you to pull the team together and set the tone.
    Even if it's your first time as SL, just communicate and lead the team as if you know what you want and they're all extensions of your own will and you'll be fine. Listen to them, they might ask for you to drop a new OP because it got taken out, but just talk and keep them in the loop of what the play is and they'll love you for it. This team communication and given orders makes this game fun to play. I love being told what to do in this game by competent people and so do others.
    The most overwhelming thing is the command radio because that thing is going off in your ear the entire time and it's very confusing and intimidating at first because command might ask you to do something you don't understand at first, and that's ok, just ask them to walk you through it. The commander will be very quick to identify who is capable of building garries and doing things and will ask them to do it and ignore your squad for those tasks if he gets the vibe that you're new. He can pick this up intuitively usually because you're not talking to command or asking for supplies. So, don't worry, your team can win without you being super active and command will adjust for it.

    Great video. I'm a newbie and learn so much by taking a few minutes to watch these before I jump in and show my inexperience. I specifically bought HLL because it was a game based on communication. I am amazed at the number of players who do not respond to requests for information, and equally impressed by the players who communicate effectively. The game is so much more enjoyable when SL and CDR's coordinate actions well.

    I have found that when playing squad leader the "older" players are INSANELY hostile to anyone learning or trying to figure it out. Also incredibly hostile to taking orders and will cuss out the SL or commander for having a plan, while refusing to offer up their own. I even saw some older players make horrible blunders and just pass off the blame. Only played 1 game where this was not the case. So, from what I have seen so far, people bitch to no end about commander and SL, but outright refuse to take responsibility and try it themselves, or and perhaps worse, they form little 2 man squads and just do whatever they want and "fuck you" to everyone else who is trying something. Good video! Very helpful and a WHOLE lore more helpful than just about everyone I have played with to date. Asking a question in the game is one of the worst mistakes you can make, you are just begging to get cussed out and called trash. Been playing SL myself lately because no one else will and I can say this: it sucks horribly when a higher level player joins the squad or WORSE: more than one. They just turn it all into a shit-show of "how can I destroy the SL?" I even wound up (level 17 myself) with a group of 4 new players who after their own experiences with "older players" would just NOT accept being SL, wouldnt touch it with a ten foot pole because of horribly treated they are, they just got scared off and dont want to put up with it.

    I had a few games this evening which were painful to say the least simply due to lack of team work and lack of communication. In the games I joined I joined up with various squads and on each occasion there was no squad lead and on a couple of those occasions people left the squad to try cycle the other players around to try and force them into that role. I'm new to the game doing my best to learn as quickly as possible but at the moment I'm trying to figure out how to throw myself into the squad lead role without being a detriment to my team. Admittedly this video is helpful but I still feel il-equipped for the role and a lot of that is simply down to lack of experience.

    I think one of the most important things is morale and always supporting your teammates and their ideas. It makes them more confident and trust in you more and it makes them more communicative towards you and helps you with ideas. Today we were losing horribly and we ended up winning after I gave my teammate a shot in a plan and he executed it and everyone just became so active and they became even more active as soon as the Outposts started going up near our objective. So one thing is always communicate with your team, always listen to them, and keep their morale high. Always compliment them when they do something good.

    Dude, no kidding. In one match I came into the game late and we were down to our final 2 sectors. I was watching what the team was up to and noticed nobody was defending our held sectors, and no one was attempting to build nodes. I made a squad, and once it filled I told them they’re the teams designated defense squad. We fell back to the final point, set up a garry (w/ the commanders assistance in getting us a truck), and stacked bodies for like 30 minutes. Because they were so focused on us, their defense was lacking and our attacking squads made leeway. We managed to squeak by just enough caps to get the majority and win the game.

  • @bowley4
    @bowley4 29 днів тому

    I would add that if you create a squad and nobody has a mic(or refuses to use theirs) and nobody listens to what you’re asking of them, your squad will not be effective and it is better to leave and join a squad that will, even if you’re becoming support or engineer for another squad. Sometimes you’ve got to cut your losses to be a helpful teammate somewhere else if your squad is clearly not going to be effective. You can spend 45 minutes in an uphill battle with squad mates who refuse to be helpful, or you can be an asset to your whole team with a squad who IS effective. And technically you can place 45 OPs per match, so make sure you’re updating your OPs as often as is necessary to better your positioning. The two minute cooldown flies by when you’re playing so most often you’ll have one ready in seconds if it’s not already ready to place so don’t be stingy with dropping new OPs, especially if you need to fall back and defend a point, drop one even if you have a garrison at that defending location because you never know when that garrison might get taken out and not having an OP can cripple your whole defensive position.

    Being a SL is difficult but Commanders and squadmates are dependend on you for battle field movements and tactics...
    That being said with my squad i usually devide responsabilities... most senior player takes SL and focuses on pings and command chat, and the second most senior player orders individual squadmates movements... this is highly rewarding if these two senior players know their roles... (usually SL and Support/Engineer/MG player combo)
    You reduce SL workload and allows him to focus on what he needs to do, stay alive, make OP's and garries, and copy markers from other SL and make your own markers.
    SL still gives orders and main objectives but but by allowing the secondary senior player take over the finer details the squad can act more decisivly.
    SL also need to be able to call out the commander hard if he is overlooking the battlefield... dont be afraid to address other SL's directly and order them something (especially if they have no current orders)

    I’ve always had good experiences as squad leader. I’ve been lucky that my squad members are usually cooperative and other squad leaders have been good at communicating. Sometimes our commander is hit or miss, but as long as I’ve been squad leader, it’s usually good. Playing defense is absolutely crucial. Like you say, everyone wants to push but many times, that’s how the other team is able to blitz one objective after another because there’s no one defending. Not to mention some commanders are playing as if they’re assault infantry and getting killed left and right… that’s the absolute worst!

    A point I hope the video will touch on:
    Even a bad squad leader is better than no squad leader. If I join another squad that nobody is filling that role in while being basically full, I'm gonna take lead just to kick all others.

    Pro tip…if the commander chat is being spammed with unnecessary chat, don’t be afraid to tell the commander/officers to pipe down a bit. I’ll always do that, and generally get an apologetic response.

    I honestly think they need to move command chat to the support role. It would free up so much more mental space for squad leads to be able to focus on the battle at hand, instead of hearing SL's bickering about what needs to be done. Plus, it would make the support role feel more important to the game

    • @monoespacial
      @monoespacial  4 роки тому +3

      But the Squad Leader.... Is the leader, not the support. What they should do is add a toggle to the command chat to lower the volume of command chat significantly when you need to coordinate something with your squad or you're in a tough spot.

    • @TheRealMurican
      @TheRealMurican 4 роки тому

      @@monoespacial That also sounds good. The reason why I suggested it is because it would add more realism to the game. The support role (radio man) would have been the only one able to hear any radio transmissions coming in. In the end, the squad leader still makes the decisions on what the squad needs to do

    • @fosty.
      @fosty. 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheRealMurican Yeah a radio man and no squad radio would be cool. Your squad would have to stick together to communicate or send runners to get messages to other squads.

    I learned one thing in my two about to be three days of paying HLL, if no one is gonna do it, it’s better to be a crappy SL than have an officer less squad.

  • @MoustacheMedic

    I just took SL tonight when ours left and my squad had no support, didn't listen to any of my messages, when i told them we had to defend I was greeted with "who decided that!!???". Half the battle is getting a squad that LISTENS to thier SL. The other half is getting a good command. Anyone reading this, if your SL gives a command like defend not push, just listen. A solid defense is WAY more important than just running into the meat grinder.

    The way l feel this game is designed is giving players that immersion by having slight role play in commands from the SL making it objective based as a squad. 100% more enjoyable with voice coms even if they arent the best.

    One complaint I have is that I'm not able to start a squad - swap to engineer to build nodes and then swap back most times without someone A - stealing my supply truck during re swap or B - stealing officer cause they can't wait 5min yet no one else will take engineer and build the nodes themselves lmao.

Granted I did terribly, and tried my best of OP placement. End of match got like 4 pity commendations rofl, was fun

    I’ve played quite a bit of commander and I feel quite proficient. My chief complaint is when Squad Leads ask for something and wait .00001 seconds before complaining about not getting it to them fast enough and/or just being plain assholes for no reason. Kinda wish there was a kick player out button!

    You know part of the problem is some players are more interested in playing this game like call of duty, they are only interested in their KD. They blame the lose on others even though they did nothing to make sure the team won while being so proud of their awesome KD.

    You can kind of play this game without a mic....i mean i did. but i had head phones in and i let my SL know that i had no coms and i stuck to his hip like glue and did what he said and got commendations for it. i know this is completely unrelated but i just thought id throw it out there
    P.S. Try and get a mic asap, if you have Astro headset for PS4 or Xbox one you can use it, just put the adapter with the 2 jacks on the end of the cord and plug them both in ;) had a mic the whole time and didn't even notice lmao

    Guys sometimes your soldiers in your squad don't follow or reply your orders this doesn't mean anything keep giving orders and doing your job. In the end there will be soldiers who follow you
