Yeah, the fact that in this season he failed to mention the music section is beyond me, but then again it wasn't as big a change as it was in Season 3 with the synthesizers made to sound more orchestral and grander that would only be improved and used in the next two seasons as well.
This is one of the best seasons and one of the most important. So many crucial things happened. It's the season when the mvp Edward was at his peak, we met a ton of new characters who would become staples in the series, the environments got a lot more realistic and industrial, scraping and dieselization were introduced, and of course, it's the last season where every story was based off ones from the books.
@@ToastTheThe well to be fair, Season 4 had every episode based on the books by either Wilbert or Christopher Awdry (which was like Season 2) except Rusty to the Rescue that was the only retcon the creators of the series changed drastically from what would be the intro to Stepney in his book "Bluebells of England"
Season 1 however would be the only season where all the episodes are based strictly on Wilbert's books in order for the most part apart from a few skips and the last being one he wrote separately from The Railway Series being "Thomas' Christmas Party" in the same year the TV series premiered
I think this peaks Duncan gets spooked aesthetically as the sets are dark and covered in fog, and the music is terrifying because the synth plays an integral role. they will never be able to replicate this song with Orchestrated music.
Season 2 was like Thomas and Friends equivalent of unlocking the second island on GTA we were introduced to new locations and characters plus Thomas had a new home to stay in.
Thomas is definitely at his worst this season; his negative traits are at their most overt here. Even so, there are still some overlooked moments that hint if not outright show the tank engine's good qualities. In "Old Iron", he is quick to stand up for Edward when James is complaining about him. In "Percy Takes the Plunge", he calmly and patiently explains to Percy the significance of the danger board. He even references his own folly in "Down The Mine" to get his point across. He expresses genuine gratitude towards Bertie for getting his passengers to Edward and thanks the bus for being a good friend to him. His friendship with Bertie shines through again in "Better Late Than Never" when Thomas takes pity on him for breaking down and returns the favor from "Bertie's Chase", being quick to help his passengers. And that was despite the offense Thomas took at Bertie's criticism of him earlier in the episode. In "Thomas and Trevor", despite his initial skepticism of the traction engine, he does come around to seeing how capable Trevor is and even tries to cheer him up when the work is over. In the same story, Annie and Clarabel even mention that Trevor's kindness reminds them of Thomas. Those 2 more than anyone else would be the ones to truly understand Thomas and know who he is on the inside. So even at his most petulant, flippant, egotistical, aloof and hotheaded level, Thomas still had some heart of gold moments sprinkled throughout this year.
Showing The Empire Strikes Back, Shrek 2 & The Dark Knight as examples at the beginning was a nice touch, those movies are the holy trinity of a perfect sequel.
Season 2 really is Edward's season (2 and 2 together). He really stole the show with an amazing character arc of proving to the big engines once and for all that he isn't a weak and pathetic engine.
Everything about this video is fantastic but the absolute best thing is that Shrek 2 is in the montage in the intro when Nick’s talking about the best sequels
God am I glad this channel exists. I grew up on Thomas (35 now, so seasons 2 and 3 came out right in my sweet spot), and I constantly think about the impact it’s had on me. Upon discovering this channel, I’m finally doing a full series re-watch, and digging up my old railway series books. Man did I miss this show being a part of my life, and now I get to engage with it and you all in the big kid way lol, obsessing over minute plot and production anomalies hahaha! Keep up the good work, see you in season 24…😅
Duck: Shut up! You're all jealous! Gordon: *Looks at camera* 10G and this guy is even bossier than me. This is just what I thought during the scene the moment happened in. What Gordon said here isn't actually canon. In the base scene, he actually just looks at the camera.
Season 2 was a great improvement over Season 1. Not only that, but it’s my favorite season. Some of the episodes are fantastic like Edward’s Exploit, Ghost Train, and my personal favorite A Close Shave.
Agreed. Favourite season since I was a kid, it has such a rich texture and atmosphere to it in the visuals that no season beyond it ever quite recaptured, as great as seasons 3, 4 and 5 are.
Season 2 was a greater improvement to the first season with character arcs, Camera angles, Percy having more appearances and Edward having a badass moment in his episode “Edward’s Exploit”
I've always liked how much season 2 expanded on what season 1 did before; the grittier style and dynamic camera were fantastic additions to the show. This and season 3 laid a lot of groundwork for the model series going forward, and I'll always be great full for it! A sleeper hit season
Ghost Train scared me as child when I would see it pop up on TV, and I would fast forward through it on VHS tapes. It did a great job of turning such a nice fun show into something a little more scary.
Glad that Thomas develops more nicer and sensible in seasons 3 and 5 from onwards - funny would be better to describe him than cheeky for that, although I do admit that he’s in between sensible and cheeky in the CGI series
Britt Allcroft: *cancels "The Missing Coach" because of it's convoluted plot and lack of action Also Britt: *writes Thomas and the Magic Railroad which has the most convoluted plot in history, and also lacks engaging action.
Also Britt: *places Four Little Engines, the episode where Skarloey is called out to fill in for Sir Handel before a Bad Day for Sir Handel, the episode that has Sir Handel and Peter Sam joining the Skarloey Railway.*
David Mitton said Thomas, Percy, and The Coal replaced The Missing Coach but many fans feel this is likely to be Mandela effect given that many of the sets used are the same.
In the original upload, I explained my alternate take on 'The Missing Coach', which figures in my line-up for my business plan for the near-future. The summary is this: 'Donald insists to Douglas whilst they are questioned of truancy to not press forward with his own desire to prove himself. Douglas however takes advantage of Duck being busy with other duties (as per the original story) to relieve him by taking Gordon's coaches away for him. The main difference from the book version is that, instead of leaving the coaches in a siding, Douglas moves them to another platform, ready for Henry to take out for his next train. This takes further advantage of a plot point in the origin book that ultimately goes nowhere, which states that coaches had to go out again with fresh passengers as another train as soon as they had arrived in the station. Henry leaves with Thomas's special coach unknowingly still attached behind his tender, and delays ensue when it becomes clear Thomas's coach is absent from the station. Donald finds out and to prevent Douglas being caught out, stays behind to take the blame whilst Douglas takes his goods train, only to have reckoned without Sir Topham Hatt's precise attention to scheduling.' This maintains the comical confusion of the original while at the same time being a more direct and action-driven plot. I also think it would have been interesting if they took the opportunity to expand a bit on Edward's branch line; prior to the stories introducing BoCo, Bill and Ben, this wasn't given any major expansion, and some original characters who act as subordinates to Edward would have been perfect for that, and also potentially underlying the reason for Duck being sent to Edward's Station during Diesel's trial. As with my outline for 'The Missing Coach', this was something I have taken on-board in my personal plans. Regards, Samuel Farris.
My favorite video of yours, Tug! I always come back to this whenever I need something to watch, season 2 is my all time favorite! Much Love, God Bless from Iowa!
Anyone who hasn’t really watched the show that isn’t BWBA or AEG should watch Season 2 to see how serious crashes were handled and how violent and terrifying they were
What's nice about this video is that its original upload date is the same day that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Green Eggs and Ham: The Second Serving released, which were also both really good sequels!
Season 2, or Series 2, was a fascinating follow-up from the first season it had my favorite iteration of Brendam Docks, expanded the Island of Sodor featuring Edward's Branchline and showing new engine character such as the China clay twins, Boco, Duck, Donald & Douglas, and Daisy. Another reason why it's one of my favorites is a number happy to see a number of episodes featuring Edward!
there's a Thomas fan series called Ghost Train. it tells the story of a train that worked on the railway before Thomas. he was an old engine named Timothy; he has a silver paint job with the number 0 as his number. he was transporting passengers when he went town a ravine where a bridge would be built and died. after the bridge was built, some say to have seen Timothy's ghost passing through.

The fact we are completely finished with the model series after 1 year is mind boggling. But I am really glad these retrospectives exist, they have taught me so many things about the history of the production. Love this video though! ❤❤ I'm super excited for Season 13

Believe it or not: 1. Gordon and Henry are the second lead characters in Cows 2. Annie, Clarabel, and Harold are the lead characters in The Runaway 3. Bertie is the lead character in Better Late Than Never 4. Harold is a supporting character in Thomas and the Missing Christmas Tree
Imo the 4 main characters of this season are Thomas, Percy, Duck and ofc Edward this was honestly the only season I'll truly consider Edward one of the main characters I love how he is low-key connected to not just almost every newbie but also contributes to all the season 2 plotlines (besides thomas branchline which is handled by percy) Edward in one season: saves someone from scrap, risks breaking himself to save james, helps stand up for the Scottish twins, puts the China clay twins in their place, become the first character on screen to openly trust a diesel and ofc the greatness that is Edward's exploit
I feel like Drip Tank was dropped more because it was a culmination of an arc in the book that the show's adaptation resolved by the first story. The book was designed to be an ongoing story, but the show clearly wanted it for the purpose of Thomas stories they could spread across the season to give Thomas consistent presence in it. It is kind of a shame, since I think Drip Tank placed near the end could have culminated the 'jerk Thomas' arc of the season nicely and transitioned him more naturally into his nicer Season Three self. I feel like this 'out of order' element is what bogs down the season a little. Like Tug mentions it SOMETIMES works nicely (I like how the non-rail characters who barely appeared in Wilbert's books maintain presence throughout the season for example), but other times they mention stories that got skipped over like Percy's Promise and Bull's Eyes (I actually find it strange Percy Takes The Plunge took priority over those, especially Bull's Eyes which likely would have been easier to make, I could believe that Percy Takes The Plunge was the one hastily added when the Missing Coach was cancelled).
Despite the fact that they are still obvious flaws, I do like that the technical goofs of this season kinda of add to the industrial more serious feel of this season that shows how the show is moving on from the storybook world, but not entirely.
Season 2 of Thomas & Friends seems very interesting for me even when I first saw nearly every single episode on the VHS tapes! Also, I'd like to point out one thing: David Mitton stated in an interview just before he died in 2008 that the replacement episode for "The Missing Coach" was "Thomas, Percy and the Coal." My logical guess is that the first bunch of Tidmouth station yards scenes were filmed in December of '85 including "The Missing Coach", and then probably during their Christmas break, Britt Allcroft held a meeting with the production crew, saying that the plot for that episode would be too confusing for young viewers to follow. So, with "TMC" cancelled, the crew had to quickly draft the adaptation of "Thomas, Percy and the Coal" during their break, and once filming restarted in early January 1986, they resumed with the same set and the first scene to be shot from that episode was the scene where Thomas gets drenched with coal dust from the coal chute. I also noticed in the shot with Percy where Ringo Starr says "Percy was worried, but he couldn't help laughing", that you can barely see a hole in a house in the background in which I'm assuming that was the station master's house. So, I'm guessing that they filmed the Thomas drenched with Coal scene after the Thomas crash from "Thomas Comes to Breakfast."
I think the castle in the background is actually a ruined monastery. Love this as an early modern historian, seeing the impact of the Reformation on the Island of Sodor 😍
Season 2 will always be my favourite - evidenced by the fact that my childhood copy of The Deputation VHS tape was very heavily worn! The season made Edward my favourite engine. My sister and I have a running in-joke thanks to Cows ("It's only a cow!"), and I still firmly believe in the "backing signal"!. As much as I love all the episodes my faves are Edward's Exploit, Ghost Train and Pop Goes The Diesel.
I prefer Season 1 over S2. Because Season 1 is more nostalgic and recognized by many fans of the show. Season 2 is good in its own ways, I love watching it and everything but Season 1 is just way better. This is just my opinion and I hope you respect it! Also I agree that Thomas was being a jerk in Season 1, But as the seasons changed more, Thomas changed aswell. He always had a good heart in the seasons. Just not in Season 1 because it can clearly be seen. But for like Seasons 3,4,5,6 and so on that's totally different. Thomas indeed changed and that's what I love about him. I also love how Hit era made him better. Clearly the better version than he was in Season 1!
It just feels like everyone is pushing a bit harder this time around; or that they were holding back a tad in Series 1. Even Ringo’s performance in Series 1 feels like they want to take no chances. I just wish we could have had more Ringo!
As much as it's considered filler, Better Late Than Never is the episode of TTTEAF than I remember most vividly, although forgot that they were only roughly 5 min long tales. When checking that it was the episode I was recalling I found an upload on YT that has the Britt Allcroft Presents credit sting at the start & I didn't realise just how much nostalgia I had for that jingle. It was like hearing the BBC guitar melody off a dvd of Top Gear, I turned 21 last week & suddenly I'm 4 again (the final episode of S6 is just over a month older than I am)
Better Late Than Never to me is a great Bertie episode as well, some really good character development. Also the viaduct scenes and music are spectacular
I love season 2 very much. Many of the episodes feel more grounded than in the happy first season when we were just getting to know the engines. Some of the best episodes come from this season and for good reason: the darkness in some of the episodes make them stand out
I think Ringo’s performance in season two was just slightly better than his performance in season one he certainly did have more energy in his line delivery and I appreciate his attempt at a Scottish accent, but I think he needed to try harder to achieve it. When George Carlin re dubed season two he did a much better with a Scottish accent than Ringo which is why I prefer him over Ringo.
Gotta hand it to you, you have a really good narrator voice. A lot of these videos tend to have a narrator who is very far on the spectrum so they can’t really convey messages well. This is the first channel with this content I can actually stand
I'm not sure "Better Late Than Never" really *is* the filler episode that replaced the cancelled "Missing Coach," because as you said: The only episode without any dynamic camera movement is "The Runaway". Coincidentally, also a Thomas-centric episode in a series where he is NOT the focus this time around. Seems like a good bet to me that one was shot quick and dirty.
Henry speaks in the episodes: 1. Cows 2. Duck takes charge 3. Percy takes the plunge 4. Pop goes the diesel 5. Dirty work 6. Better late than never 7. The deputation 8. Edward's exploit
I personally find it hard to believe that "Better Late Than Never" was the episode that replaced the Missing Coach because of how it connects so much with later episodes in the season. This is the episode where the viaduct repairs are established which are seen again in multiple other episodes this season, most notably in "Ghost Train." I also find it hard to believe that they wouldn't have already chosen to adapt it given that it came from the book specifically written to be adapted. Sure, they didn't adapt "Drip Tank" either, but if BLTN was never intended to be filmed, then that would mean only two of the stories from that book would have even been adapted. I know that many books have only had 1 or 2 stories adapted at the time, but given that the book was specifically written to be adapted, I find it hard to believe half the book would have been left out.. I personally find it more likely that "Thomas and Trevor" or Missing Christmas Tree were the replacement since they are based on one-off stories, but in all honesty, it seems like we'll never know for sure.
I forgot where I saw it. Maybe the Wikia. Thomas, Percy and the Coal was the replacement for The Missing Coach. It was gonna be the debut episode of the season.
Im so glad when Donald and Douglas were introduced that their original, confusing stories before break van weren't used. Itnadds a better, more streamlined introduction to the Scottish Twins.
Like in any show, the second season means that the first season did well. It was better than season 1 in my opinion, because we got better cinematography, more characters, like Donald and Douglas.
The only thing I would add is this was the season that introduced “The Viaduct” theme.
Absolute masterpiece.
Yeah, the fact that in this season he failed to mention the music section is beyond me, but then again it wasn't as big a change as it was in Season 3 with the synthesizers made to sound more orchestral and grander that would only be improved and used in the next two seasons as well.
YESSSSSSS my favourite theme in thomas
That, the Watermill Theme, and Donald and Douglas' theme are themes I can listen to all day
George Carlin is easily the best voice for Donald and Douglas
His voice was perfect even tho Angelis had a much better accent. It's George's comedian voice that makes it
@gilbertmartinez257 I agree
Top 5 narrators are starr carlin angelis brosnan and baldwin and moraghan
I liked Starr's funny sounds
George Carlin was single handedly the best voice for this series (in my opinion)
Fun fact: Daisy is the first woman locomotive to be employed by the northwestern railway.
I like the fact that Edward is the MVP of Season 2 and he is the number 2 of Sodor with Rheneas.

Currently rewatching all of your videos while playing video games to support the channel in the only way i can
Despite the fact that they are still obvious flaws, I do like that the technical goofs of this season kinda of add to the industrial more serious feel of this season that shows how the show is moving on from the storybook world, but not entirely.
I can’t wait for season 5 retrospective and to relive the hype
1:10 the fat controller s podium is made out of Lego bricks 😂
I think the castle in the background is actually a ruined monastery. Love this as an early modern historian, seeing the impact of the Reformation on the Island of Sodor 😍
The Scottish accent attempt was really good
Season 2 will always be my favourite - evidenced by the fact that my childhood copy of The Deputation VHS tape was very heavily worn!
10:05: I guess you could say the lack of space in season 1 really upset the crew members.
It just feels like everyone is pushing a bit harder this time around; or that they were holding back a tad in Series 1. Even Ringo’s performance in Series 1 feels like they want to take no chances. I just wish we could have had more Ringo!
Ghost train is the episode that scared the crap out of me as a kid. But I do have to thank it for being the gateway into my love of horror.
Thank you for reupload!!!
17:23 "That's a lot for him". I'm from Poland and just realized in original version Bertie is male character. It blows my mind after all this years.
Audrey can put it bass real life
I hope we get the missing coach soon. Not too long until 2025
One word to describe season 2:improvement
I love season 2 very much. Many of the episodes feel more grounded than in the happy first season when we were just getting to know the engines. Some of the best episodes come from this season and for good reason: the darkness in some of the episodes make them stand out
I think Ringo’s performance in season two was just slightly better than his performance in season one he certainly did have more energy in his line delivery and I appreciate his attempt at a Scottish accent, but I think he needed to try harder to achieve it. When George Carlin re dubed season two he did a much better with a Scottish accent than Ringo which is why I prefer him over Ringo.
Ah, yes. My favorite Thomas retrospective is finally back. Keep fighting Tug!
I have a soft spot for Carlin's narration,bit Ringo's pretty good too
A close shave is my scuba favorite episode ever
Sorry I meant favorite episode. I was playing around with words and accidentally forgot to erase one of them
I really should try and rewatch this show again
nah my g the spiteful brake van is the mvp its so obvious
Gotta hand it to you, you have a really good narrator voice. A lot of these videos tend to have a narrator who is very far on the spectrum so they can’t really convey messages well. This is the first channel with this content I can actually stand
The ghost intention episode, a.k.a Percy’s ghostly trick, always scared me when I was younger
Henry speaks in the episodes:
1. Cows
2. Duck takes charge
3. Percy takes the plunge
4. Pop goes the diesel
5. Dirty work
6. Better late than never
7. The deputation
The Thomas Retrospective taught me that this show might as well be called Percy & Friends.
Just the introduction for Percy’s ghostly trick aka ghost train still gives me goosebumps and I’m freaking 30 years old I should be used to this 😅
Even kind old Edward got his MVP
I counted the moving cameras starting from where you stop at 84 and I counted 20 more so that brings the total number up to 104.
Yay your get more of your old videos out again 😆
The series that gave the trucks iconic faces. 👍🏾
1:47 Production history
7:35 Overview

I never thought the day would come where I’d use an unlucky tug video as an aid for a University assignment XD
Unlucky Tug:Counting the camera movements.
Background:YOU JUST GOT COCONUT MALL"D
Im so glad when Donald and Douglas were introduced that their original, confusing stories before break van weren't used. Itnadds a better, more streamlined introduction to the Scottish Twins.
By far my favourite season
Watching this because I used to watch season 2 on DVD as a kid
Like in any show, the second season means that the first season did well. It was better than season 1 in my opinion, because we got better cinematography, more characters, like Donald and Douglas.
Ngl, Better Late Than Never kinda ties into the rest of the season, what with the viaduct being repaired being shown in a few episodes throughout
I swear percy will get mvp in like a boring season like
"Woww percy got mvp! In like season 10, the most iconic season"
I’ts weird that Awdry didn’t sue Britt
He probably would have wished he did if he saw season 5 or TATMR.
I swear This comment is copy pasted everywhere like bro try to be original
