The shock on Thomas face paired with the noise that the music makes when it’s said there is fish in his tank will never not only be effective at conveying the seriousness of what’s happening but also is the funniest thing ever

Ah, back where it all began, where history was made. It was so different from everything else out at the time, and that's why we loved it. Apparently, it's slower pace and easily digestible stories were really good for those on the autistic spectrum, and I was one of them. Also I totally agree on Henry being the season 1 stand-out character. Definitely my favourite character arc of season 1. He overcomes vanity and selfishness with the tunnel story. Mechanical problems with the Flying Kipper story. Bullying from both humans and an engine in Whistles & Sneezes. He's such a changed character by the end that he literally *looks* different! And I adore his theme song.

1: Thomas, Gordon, Henry, and James basically Thomas and the big engine trio
2: Thomas, Edward (easily his best season), Percy, Duck (The diesel plotline helped solidify that)

5: Thomas, Percy, James, Henry, Toby and Sir Topham Hatt (Almost identical to yours except I don't consider Gordon one of them)
6: Thomas, Percy, James and Gordon (When they began making the show all about these 4 in my opinion)

@Fan of everything hold up I remember you from the percy video glad we found each other and we definitely have similar opinions I still say Gordon is a main in season 5 due to constantly being around with the other engines at the sheds, having 1 big lead (tho I honestly consider rumors a Gordon episode too, gremlins is so confusing to determine who lead is) but also as tug mentioned in season 4 with henry I noticed Gordon was the butt monkey in season 5 let's see: crashes into a station wall, crashes through a sand tunnel, accidentally sends a truck flying, shed falls on him with other engines, and in the final season 5 scene gets his snow machine stuck and gets buried in snow

I agree and that's why I prefer the TV adaptation of The Flying Kipper more than the RWS one because while it is based on a real life incident, the aftermath in this one feels like it was played for laughs instead of portrayed as being serious. Kudos to Britt and David for cutting out that 'spilt cocoa' bit.

Oh come on, it’s not like that bit made it a god awful story in the original and peak cinema in the TV series. You guys just think that the more serious it is the more superior it is. What’s wrong with a bit of humor? It was meant to unescalate a serious situation. TV series just made it all grim until suddenly Henry is repaired and things are magically all better.

That’s a bit harsh towards the HiT era, wouldn’t you say? I mean, sure, it could be repetitive, but each season had something unique it brought with it.
Season 8 was a soft reboot that pushed several characters in the wrong direction but wasn’t anything dreadful.
Season 9 subjected every narrow gauge engine but Peter Sam and Duncan to character assassination but had a good amount of memorable newbies and good episodes.
Season 10 was probably the worst of the HiT era due to lots of character assassination and poor plots going around.
Season 11 was similar to Season 9 in that it was better than what came before (memorable newbies; good episodes here and there) but inherited the previous season’s problems.
Season 12 was a nice send-off to the models, but alternated between surprisingly good, just alright and dreadfully terrible.
I’d argue that Tug’s got a lot to talk about for each HiT season.

Something I feel can't be undersold with Thomas is how the models, the limited motion and all, made the series extremely appealing to one market: Children on the Autism spectrum. Speaking as a high functioning autistic person who grew up with Thomas, I've seen all sorts of children and adults who either were big into Thomas and on the Spectrum, or were at one point. And I'd put a good chunk of that down to the limited motion of the model faces, the eyes and such.

Season 1 was Awdry's writing at its purest in terms of his ability to spread his knowledge of trains to the audience. I appreciate that the conflicts/issues that arise in the episodes have to do with teaching the audience how a railway and its trains work. "Thomas & The Guard" teaches the audience how important it is to have a guard on a passenger train. "Edward, Gordon & Henry" teaches the audience about safety valves when Gordon breaks his and is forced to stop. "Troublesome Trucks" teaches the audience the importance of having a brakevan at the end of freight trains when the conductor activates the brakes and prevents a potential runaway. Henry's character arc revolves around the issues that arise from having a smaller firebox, a very technical aspect of steam engines that kids would learn about.
I can go on and on Lol, but stuff like this is what makes Season 1 so charming to me. It's what kickstarted my love for the fiery beasts that we call Steam Engines and why I, and many others, have decided to look into them more.

Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends is truly one of these series that really feels unique, unique I think in how they used models to bring to life the engines, the good reverend created based on real life British steam engines that he mixed and matched in different ways, authentic train enthusiasts have recognized over the years.
The models, truly still look wonderful to this day, the way they move on screen, the whistle sounds that were created by the series composers, each engine having their own, the effects of steam coming out from their chimneys (created from blowing steam below the set via the remote controlled models). The movement of the coaches, trucks etc chims nicely each episode. The sets, while clearly limited by the small set they had for the first season and the restored versions often exposing the studio sets equipment, the often small gaffs i have noticed more and more like blue tack being clear or engines coming off the tracks, give that student project authenticness to the series that I love dearly.
As the crew of the series clearly detail the world like a art storybook, especially with how often the camera shots are static and clearly capturing the beautiful sets they made of the stations, the viaduck, the docks, the river, winter snow etc. This is something the series was wonderful at in the early seasons.
The series also has fantastic music throughout it, with its opening theme still being one of fiction's best, Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell compose truly fitting themes for each character that fits them like a glove, tunes that capture the cents of each episode, no matter if its a tense moment, levity or just capturing the world of Thomas. Its one of the best music soundtracks ever done for TV.
The first season, nicely feels self contained with all episodes adapting the different stories from the Railways book. The focus on the original main seven engines of Thomas, Gordon, James, Edward, Henry, Percy and Toby. Each character has an arc in the series, all have their personalities that help to define them like Thomas being a cheeky bastard, Godron pompous and proud, contrast them to each other and by the end, are all in different places than what they started as. some like Thomas and Gordon got more since they are the main stars of season one. Having the first episode together and the ending of the second last episode, which I think ties out the season perfectly with the drive riding home together. Being friends and forming an alliance.
The engine who I thought had the best arc was Henry, who's episodes show how dark the series get with his first episode alone having him bricked up forever. Course he's out by the next episode, but the fact the third episode has an engine being bricked in a tunnel for not wanting to come out and to be left there forever, sends a chill down a spine and really shows the series isn't afraid to go places. Then Henry finds himself struggling until later in the season with issues that nearly sees him being replaced until he gets special coal to pull trains. Then comes what is the series grow the beard moment, the Flying Kipper. Which is truly the episode that showcased just how brilliant the series can be, the gorgeous fog, sounds of the dock, the beautiful snow and fantastic track throughout the episode and of course, the infamous accident (minus the hand you can see) that showed the series could go big and serious.
With the ending of the episode showing Henry's return and new box, all to the brilliant tune of his theme that every time makes me cheer in joy of feeling. And his next episode concluding his arc for the season.
With all of it narrated by Beatles Ringo Starr for uk version, who settles in as the episodes goes and captures all the narration so well that fits the mellow, storybook feel of the first season.
Even after nearly 40 years, the first season of Thomas still evokes fond memories, entertaining storytelling, charming characters and vast setting that would be expanded upon in future seasons and made me fell in love with the series from such a young age. Its a series that one can appreciate even in adult years for its capturing of British trains, setting and for how the models and sets are brought to life by Britt and David that made it famous across the globe and introduced many children and adults to trains.
    9.5/10

Fun fact, Junior Campbell got his start as guitarist, pianist and co-singer in the band Marmalade best known for the 1970 hit song Reflections of My Life which became a top 10 hit in the U.S. & #3 in the UK with Campbell co-writing the song with singer Dean Ford and playing the guitar solo in the song often called a “reverse guitar solo”.
Plus one of the staffers in Season 1, Tim Staffell also had a rock music past as he was bassist and singer in a band called Smile with Brian May and Roger Taylor, the predecessor of a familiar band known as Queen when Staffell left to form Humpy Bong with former Bee Gees drummer Colin Petersson & Jonathan Kelly before Tim quit music entirely to pursue his dream of model making. Freddie Mercury and Tim Rose took Staffell’s place forming Queen, before Rose was replaced by several different bassists before settling on John Deacon. Plus Queen’s debut has a song called Doing All Right which featured songwriting credit from Staffell.
As a rock fan and someone who grew up watching Thomas I found these facts very interesting.

I'm 27 turning 28 soon, I freaking loved Thomas as a kid. Had every character you could think of and so many different sets and props. To see a good channel talk about a huge core of my childhood in depth really makes me happy. I feel like 6 again watching these for the first time. One of my favorite books was Henry and the big elephant stuck in the tunnel. So, thank you for this. I'll watch the playlist I'm even tempted to go back and watch it.

When he said "this season stands out from all the others" I COMPLETELY agree with this statement. There's just something about it that none of the other seasons couldn't even dream of having. Really wish they could've kept going with seasons like it, but, what we got was good enough. (Though now that I'm thinking about it, Paint, Pots and Queens REALLY should've been the last episode for this season but I understand why it wasn't considering their budget didn't allow them to do it back then)

Its propably nasturga talking, but still.
I loved especially that the camera didnt move!
It always made me feel like Im standing aside a railway, watching a train go by. Or laying aside my modle train set with my nose inches from the rail as my modle train goes by.
I wish they kept that style.

I was born in 2003 in Italy. My parents, when I was 4, bought me some Thomas & Friends DVDs. Interestingly, even though at the time Thomas was already owned by HiT, they bought me DVDs of the entire first season and half of season 2, instead of some later seasons. I literally grew up with season 1 only, and I still regard it as the best Thomas season ever. I remember those episodes fondly, and still prefer them over the later ones.

I would argue that Thomas & the Guard is one of the most important episodes for moving the plot along--because of the Henry scene. That's where we learn that Henry's health is quite serious--yet since it's from Thomas' perspective--we don't yet know if we should sympathise with him. We later get a call back to this episode later in Henry's Coal.

Regarding "Down the Mine", as originally transmitted in January 1985, it WAS the final episode (as Thomas' Christmas Party was moved forward to be after Dirty Objects) so even though no official release put it there, I always consider that final shot of Thomas & Gordon going off as the Fat Controller waves at them to be the real end of the first season. And having Off the Rails and Down the Mine as a double bill works really well, as does putting Thomas' Christmas Party earlier as it kind of replaced Mrs Kyndley's Christmas from the Toby book (it even has a flashback to it). Being a child of the 80s was amazing.

Truly one of the most confusing events of my childhood is seeing "Thomas Meets The Queen" happen in Series 4, calling back to "Down the Mine" in Series 1. Not knowing the show's running order necessarily from piecing together episodes on VHS, but I did pick up on the aesthetic differences between each series, like every episode in Series 4 having a golden brown lighting to it.
How did the makers wait SO long to tie that up?

I think it’s appropriate that someone other than Thomas was MVP for the season; I feel like season 1 is the season where you can rewatch an episode about your favorite character and usually find a moment that makes you go “you know, I think that /is/ a favorite moment of mine after all”.
It’s where every character had some characteristic of theirs started, and even if it isn’t always sited as favorite moments for a character, if you like something about an engine in the model series, you can usually rewatch season 1 and be like “oh, I can see how this character developed to what they are in season ___” and possibly even develop a new favorite moment.

In my alternate take outline of the Thomas TV series' history (which I created in part to flesh out original ideas), I essentially depict Series 1 following the same path as here, which helps amplify how perfect it indeed is as a setup for what to expect out of the show in my book. If you are going to set up a solid first impression of what to expect from your series, it has to be easy to digest and follow. I agree with Unlucky Tug in 'Flying Kipper' and 'Toby and the Stout Gentleman' being standout episodes for encompassing distinct themes; the fact too that it was intermittent with the generally consistent nature of Season 1 was the icing on the cake. For the record, 'Toby and the Stout Gentleman' carries the tone of losing something important and a new hope that the other episodes did not have, giving thus a strong first impression of Toby that cements his contributions going forward. Regards, Samuel Farris.
