I'm English and I bought that Stranded single because of that SOUNDS review in 1976. It was before Sex Pistols and The Damned. John Peel played Stranded, and about 6 months later, The Saints were on Top Of The Pops. I saw them at the Marquee and they were better than a lot of their English contemporaries. The reason why you two don't know of their importance is because historians are biased and nobody wants to acknowledge a good band from Australia. They also did an appearance on that British drama show The Saint back in the 70's. Don't doubt that these guys were doing it before and better than the British counterparts.
Always thought this was the first Punk record, and it seemed to be a while, till anyone else caught up! Great stuff!
There's a tonne of unacknowledged Aussie firsts and not just in the music world.
London and New York behave like they are the only two cities that generate English language culture. Punk spontaneously arose in five cities (at least) independent of the others - London, New York, Los Angeles, Brisbane and Sydney.
In Australia the repressive and corrupt State Governments, particularly in Queensland (NSW was almost as corrupt, but less of a police state), coupled with the political fallout from The Dismissal (CIA and MI6 collusion with the conservative coalition in Australia to topple the legitimate Labor government), plus an explosion in the number of teenagers and young adults due to the effects of the baby boom and massive postwar migration led to a powder keg of youthful energy pushing against the establishment. The nascent punks in Brisbane and Sydney didn’t have to look overseas for inspiration- they were reacting to what was happening right in their faces.
Pure facts! And still producing it to this very day...wait till The Thamesmen discover Amyl and The Sniffers! ;)

Brisbane Australia to be precise, the first 500 copies of I'm Stranded were on the EMI custom label ie: self funded pressings. I worked with the singers sister for many years (unknowingly) until one day we were talking about music and she said "my brother Chris is in a band" - managed to get my Saints albums autographed by him!

definitely "Aloha Steve & Danno" is a classic.
Although Brisbane was an extremely conservative place in the 1970's, there was always a wild anarchic underbelly that was kicking against the system - the perfect breeding ground for a nascent punk rock movement. This included wild rock'n'roll dances dating back to the 1950's that were often held in hired out community halls because 'respectable' venues wouldn't touch them. The Saints carried a lot of that in their DNA along with the Detroit sound and other touring English acts in the early 1970's. The Saints definitely predated the Ramones and have documented gigs under the name with the set list that ended up on the first album from before the Ramones formation. However, being in a cultural backwater, it took them a lot longer to scrape together the money and self fund their first release on their own Fatal Records (no-one was willing to take a punt on investing in this band at the time). The Ramones therefore beat them into the studio, but the release of I'm Stranded predated the release of New Rose by The Damned and the Sex Pistols. The Saints sold half their run of singles and sent the other half to interstate and overseas reviewers and labels, which included Sounds magazine, leading to their famous review. As soon as EMI in the UK heard the song, they rang their Australian office in Sydney and sent them up to Brisbane to sign them immediately and get them into the studio as soon as possible. I'm Stranded was re-recorded for wider release through EMI, which is why some people think that it came after the other early punk releases. They also didn't travel to the UK immediately, so they were seen as late and out of fashion by the London crowd by the time they arrived, however by then they (Ed Kuepper particularly) had moved on musically towards the sounds of Know Your Product and the second album Eternally Yours. Prehistoric Sounds, the third and final album of the original lineup started incorporating more jazz influences into the songwriting that hinted towards Kuepper's next project Laughing Clowns - he was so far ahead pop the curve it took until the 2000's for the mainstream to catch up and properly appreciate what he was doing back them. Notably, before they went to the UK, they toured the east coast of Australia, where they influenced a nascent group called Boys Next Door, who renamed themselves as The Birthday Party and fronted by Saints fanboy Nick Cave, they also tore up the rulebook in the UK in the early 1980's. Cave duetted with Bailey in 'Bring It On' and has invited Kuepper to tour as the Bad Seeds Guitarist.

Know You Product is a pretty significant song for Australian music, because it kicked off a whole trend for having a brass section, which led to bands like Hunters & Collectors.

You can't go past Chris Bailey and any version of The Saints. They put out some great albums. Ed Kuepper released some terrific solo records as well.

I recently saw the lead singer Chris on a re-run of a show here called Spicks & Specks, and he called the Sex Pistols a crap band. True Punk rocker
Joe Strummer said in an interview that when they were all packed in a car driving home after a gig John Peel played I'm Stranded and they loved it so much they had to pull over to listen
Well I don't know about the first punk band, but they were definitely the first punk band in the world to record their own songs. My favourite is know your product.
P. S. One of Australia's first blues bands was Chain, who started in the 60's and their number one hit was black and blue.

Barbara Rees Chain "Towards The Blues" was a great album. A collector's item now.
In the mid-70's Brisbane, Qld was a very backward country town.
Qld was being ruled by a very oppressive Right-Wing Fascist government.
Police would storm into venues and shut down the gigs and threaten to confiscate the Band's equipment.
If you gathered in groups of more than 3 people you could be arrested.
The LIVE music scene was viewed as very radical and a potential threat to the government.
True, the musicians were politically progessive and even Left-Wing therefore they were a 'vehicle' for the young people's minds.
The Saints were at the forefront of the movement without trying to be.

Ed Kuepper did a beautiful song The way you make me feel Fantastic song! you must listen to as well. You wont be disappointed! Chris Bailey always was like that..seen him live in a little club in Adelaide..with a bottle of bourbon next to him fucking cool! I was 17 at the time 1987. Also in your own time my ex hubby(still friend's) was in a band ''The young home buys''..but he had a band ''Nasty Nigel and the teenage hell cat's'' He brought out a track ''Jones town suicide' another early punk song with a reggae influence..in your own time..check it out. What a great band!!! I bought I'm Stranded the day it came out and it changed my life. Ed Kuepper has released over 50 albums to some success. His solo shows or with drummer Jim White are fantastic and he has a brilliant, droll sense of humour. He also has a band called "The Aints" who do Saints and Ed's solo songs, a great band. Two of Ed's best are "Everything I've got belongs to you" and "The way I made you feel", instant classics. We love Chris.
The Guitarist, Ed Kuepper, has had a brilliant musical career. Check him out lads.

I first heard this song on Sydney Radio Station JJ 1540 am in 1976.
The Saints had no idea the history they were making at the time.
They were joyously oblivious.
Isolated in the very backward town called Brisbane, Qld, Australia, under the Fascist rule of Joh Bjelke Petersen.
Police were shutting down their gigs and confiscating their equipment.

The Saints were originally called Kid Galahad and the Eternals in 1973.
The band renamed themselves the Saints in 1974, inspired by Leslie Charteris's character The Saint.
They are one of the most influential Rock Bands of all time.
Everything they did was very organic and unintentional.
Their clothes and their hair was very out of step with the music scene they found in London.
All the 'Punks' had short hair or spiky hair.
They didn't fit in and they didn't care, which was a very Punk attitude. LOL.
In 2017, a mural dedicated to the Saints and their song "(I'm) Stranded" was enacted on Roma Street, Brisbane. The mural included lyrics from the song and is situated close to 4 Petrie Terrace, the location previously used by the band as an unlicensed venue.[29]
In 2021, the State Library of Queensland named its copy of "(I'm) Stranded" as one of the treasures from its John Oxley Library collection, citing the 7” vinyl single represented a piece of Australian and Queensland music history, influencing generations of bands around the world.[30]

Absolute classic songs bought I'm stranded on vinyl when it was released and still play it often, brings back a lot of fond memories of my youth
I was 6 in 1976 and into The Sweet, T-Rex and AC/DC so my dad who was into country music bought me a compilation album called Aus-Rock. Most of it was pretty bland but the last song on it was I’m Stranded. It blew my little mind. I just played that one song on repeat. For my 21st I made some mixed tapes for my party of songs that were important to me and I put I’m Stranded on them about 10 times because I thought it was the most important song in my music development. Love your channel guys.
Jon Savage referenced The Saints in his book, England’s Dreaming. One of the earliest punk bands to get their music on vinyl after Ramones. It’s often thought that Sex Pistols were rallying against Thatcher’s tough rule, The Saints from Brisbane evolved from a similar political landscape with the Bjelke-Petersen ruling QLD with a very conservative iron fist. Brilliant band. Glad you finally found them.

Not only from Australia, but from Queensland which in 1976 was a police state run by Joh Bjelke Peterson.
Peterson never got the merciless beat down he deserved nor his henchmen. It took some serious kamikaze guts to be wild boys like the Saints and their fans.

The Saints weren't my cup of tea, but as a former Brisbane girl, I know the part they played in the city's (and nation's) musical legacy. RIP Chris Bailey.
BTW, if you're thinking of doing another Aussie week down the track (!!) check out early tracks from Models (I Hear Motion, Big on Love), Hoodoo Gurus (My Girl, Bittersweet, I Want You Back), and INXS (Black & White, Don't Change, One Thing). They each bridged the indie/pop-rock divide in their own unique way.

I bought the I’m Stranded and Eternally Yours LPs in 1978, from the cut-out bin at Rasputin Records in Berkeley. Not one bad song. Chris made me feel like he had written each one just for me. Bought my Radio Birdman LPs at the same store, including a live album with a hand-drawn radio tower on the cover (not a reproduction of hand-drawn art). They’re still in my collection.

They say that you need to come from a place, a city etc where there’s anger & a social movement that’s “kicking against the pricks” to produce angry punk music & not many people outside of Australia would understand that Brisbane in the 70s was often compared to a “police state” there was mass police corruption & was run by a tyrannical conservative premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen, think a kind of Margaret Thatcher equivalent
Any kind of music or counter culture was regularly shut down by police with batons, most bands left for Melbourne or Sydney, sometimes London or NYC or LA, it was a pretty strange time & subsequently many bands emerged inspired by the social extremes of the time
Watching some live Radio Birdman is a good idea too - though I never really listened to their albums.

The Saints were punk before 'punk' and never really adopted the label. They despised commercialised 'punk'. They never followed and they never sold out. Chris wasn't playing a part in those clips, he was like that his entire life,

Brisbane was extremely conservative back in those days. It still is, and there were other conservative places in Australia at the time, but there used to be a joke that it was 1984 in Queensland long before it was 1984 in the rest of Australia.
So it was little wonder that the oppression of the state created a very rebellious crowd.
The horns in Know Your Product reminded me of The Easybeats song St Louis, another fantastically energetic song.
Late 70's early 80's were up and down the coast every weekend but we knew not to cross the border into Queensland

The Saints are from Brisbane. If you want to understand the Brissy music scene see if you can get a hold of the book "Pig City. From The Saints to Savage Garden" by Andrew Stafford. Explains the political scene with a government that cracked down on dissent.
One of my absolute favourites! I saw them 4 or 5 times over the years. One of my faves of the early era is Swing for the Crime.
Later on The Saints (Chris Bailey) continued but Ed Kuepper continued seperately as The Aints and The Laughing Clowns (amongst others). The Saints kept on with with some great songs that were minor hits. Even Bruce Springsteen recorded a Chris Bailey song: Just Like Fire Would.
I first heard the Saints UK release of '(I'm) Stranded b/w No time' in mid-1977 (recorded in Oz spring-1976) and it blew my mind (age 15) later buying ALL their records, relatedly I was already into 'underground rock' (USA eclectic genre) a.k.a. 'underground rock' and/or 'pub rock' eclectic genres in the UK (pre-'Anarchy in the UK' Sex Pistols single). Most self-proclaimed 'Punk rockers' I knew in 1977+ didn't consider the Saints to be 'punk music' but liked it (they also didn't consider 'the Stranglers', 'Eddy & the Hot Rods', and 'Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers' to be 'Punk Rock' either). I, like many 'punk' musicians in 1974-1976 HATED the adolescently denigrating label 'punk rock' (let alone the cringy late-1977+ 'New Wave' term), as did at first the Saints and half the Stranglers (and many other pre-1978 'underground rock' band members labelled 'punk' and/or 'new wave'). Back in December 1976 (when the Sex Pistols hit the UK charts global notoriety) the term 'Punk' Rock unfortunately stuck precisely because, unlike for a few thousand people in New York since 1974 (or very-obscurely since 1972+ USA only when referring to some, mostly-US, 'hardcore garageband' music circa 1964-1967), the term 'punk' was a bloody insult label via UK establishment/gutter press, even the 'proper-musicians' in the Sex Pistols did not like the "insulting" label at first, but asshole sociopaths Johnny Rotten and Malcolm McLaren (their manager/puppeteer) loved it (McLaren would have loved it if the UK press had dubbed it 'Baby-rape music', merely for the narcissistic ego pop value (McLaren and Lydon were/are creeps, but got all the celebrity, fandom, foedom and 'glory' sponging off fellow band mates into the future etc). But we are stuck with the term 'punk' or proto-punk' just like we are stuck with 'black' and 'white' people even though I never met or saw a picture of a black or white person, let alone yellow or red, in my life. The Saints weren't the first 'punk band' to release a record but '(I'm) Stranded b/w No time' was the first single released in the UK to be [retroactively] labelled by UK-institutions and some UK-fans as 'punk music'.
For more primordial UK 'punk' archeology check out the links below of 1960s groups 'The Pretty Things', and 'The Downliners Sect' (circa 1963-1968, & never particularly popular in the UK, in September 1964 'the Sect's' single 'Little Egypt' knocked the Beatles off the number 1 chart spot in Sweden for weeks and they hastily made tour of the country leading to mass Swedish-fan hysteria and venue trashing riots on a scale never happened before at a rock concert in Europe or UK for that matter, leading to questions in the Swedish parliament (and TV) on 'youth problems'), the 'Sect' were more interested in their own musical desires than pleasing their fans and so after their amazing 1964 hardcore-r'n'b (proto-proto-'punk') LP, in 1965 they came out with an edgy 'country rock music' LP, the first ever 'country rock' labelled LP anywhere, they never recovered their previous fan base or short-term 'popularity'...

Dave Warner From The Suburbs were doing Punk in the early 70s too. Lots of bands were but they were little known.
They were really into early/mid 1960s rock, especially US black-rock & global hard-garageband, on their 1st LP they covered 'Wild About You' by Oz band The Missing Links: ua-cam.com/video/zFtD5NplShk/v-deo.html (1965) who were the only band ever to release an entire song (ua-cam.com/video/IyjVncy-EXY/v-deo.html, 1965), that played backwards, near a year before the Beatles' 'groundbreaking' 'Tomorrow Never Knows' partial use of reverse loops etc.
1976 in Australia -- whitlam government sacked; Queensland under Bjelke-Petersen, portrayed as a cane toad by cartoonists ...
Don't know how old you pair are but this is classic punk as is their album 'I'm Stranded'. Try 'Nights in Venice' from there. Know You Product as you say is very important and very overlooked. This was from their second album in 1978
Yep, the late great Chris Bailey certainly could cop an attitude like no one else. And as others have noted here, you need to check Saints’ Sydney contemporaries Radio Birdman who certainly did channel MC5 & Stooges. In fact the band included two Detroit natives happening to be studying in Sydney at that time. Dennis Tek being such an MC5 fan, he played an epiphone Wilshire previously owned by Wayne Kramer. Unfortunately the band’s visit to England around 78? Was poorly received in the music press. Though so were the Saints for their lack of fashion sense at the time. You really should revisit and review Radio Birdman. Descent Into the Maelstrom was a doc made a few years back, could provide some background, though must confess I’ve been unable to stream it.
The Saints are such an incredible band. You can obviously hear there influences like MC5 and The Stooges but Chris's voice made them unique. I'm Stranded and This Perfect day are my favourite songs from them.

Brisbane in the 70s was the perfect place to create the perfect punk song. Read up on Joh Bjelke-Peterson, and you’ll understand exactly why it happened there.

What u gotta realise is brisbane in the 70s and eighties was governed by a nationalist premier who was against any form of expression or youth culture his police force were brutal !!! I know from experience no wonder such great bands emerged supported by the radio station 4ZZZ that continues bringing acts that have something to say to public notice! Another for that time is a band called RAZAR the song task force about the Queensland special branch who would dress in Hawaiian shirts to infiltrate gigs and get info on undesirables

The Saints did a cover of the Easybeats song "The Music Goes Round my Head" in the 80's and it was spectacular, and i rarely like covers. Well worth a listen.
Aussies and New Zealand have had some of the best bands in the world but the recording industries in the UK and US have done their best to keep them hidden. As someone else pointed out : Easybeats were highly influential and are related to not only AC DC but songs like " Love Is in The Air", Lobby Loyde/ Coloured Balls, Billy TK, Aztecs, Masters Apprentice, Tamam Shud, Kahvas Jute, Radio Birdman, New Christs, Rose Tattoo, The Meanies, Drunk Mums, The Chats.....

Wow . . . Alex & George, I have to say that I'm a little bit surprised that you guys had not heard The Saints' "I'm Stranded" before? Public service announcement for both of you (and any interested Thamesmen subscribers too): for many years on National Public Radio (NPR) two Chicago based newspaper rock 'n' roll critics had a show called "Sound Opinions" that did all sorts of reviews of rock music, album deep dives, etc. The show still exists today as a Podcast with the same title, by the way. But they probably have played "I'm Stranded" -- or snippets of that song -- a few hundred times over the years. Check it out, you might like it.

Another Oz punk band to have a look at are The Cosmic Psychos. Couldn’t be any more Aussie if they tried. If you saw them in the eighties they probably weren’t wearing many clothes. If you saw them around 2010 you would think the lead singer stepped out of his Bulldozer walked off the farm and onto the stage cos he probably did. If you saw them without a beer in their hand it was a case of mistaken identity and that wasn’t the Cosmic Psychos. They know how party and play music and are still going at it.

Ed hates them being called punk. His influences and interests are extraordinarily wide and very varietous from the very famous, very fundamental early African American blues guitarists to Norman Greenbaum Spirit in the Sky, to Art Ensemble of Chicago to The Who. The Saints were way before punk which they considered a commercial venture and very limited musically. I have seen Ed’s vinyl collection. It is phenomenal. Ed is a genius. The Laughing Clowns, his next band, are like nothing on the planet and remain so 43 years later.

The love of brass leads nicely from Saints into Laughing Clowns, the classic Eternally yours, Ghost of an ideal wife, Collapse board, Don't know what i want - and that is scratching the surface with the clowns. The man is a genius. BTW - Pretty sure the Saints recorded 'Know your product' in London, which would explain Algy Ward on bass...
