very sad to confirm the news about Chris Bailey dying on the weekend. Chris and I met when we were about 14 during detention at Oxley High School and became close friends which later developed into what I always thought was an extremely strong artistic partnership, I couldn't have hoped for a better singer. My deepest condolences to his wife Elisabet, his sisters Margaret, Carol and Maureen and the rest of his family and loved ones. I'll post something longer down the track but for now..
Vale Chris Bailey When I say that Chris Bailey is one of the most important people in our Australian Music History, that is a massive understatement. Today's news of his passing is like losing a family member. I'm shattered and devastated. Chris came into my life in 1976, when I was supposed to be doing school homework. Listening to Sydney's JJ 1540am radio ( thanks to the Gough Whitlam government ) I heard (I'm ) Stranded by THE SAINTS. IT STILL RANKS AS ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDS I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY 61 YEARS ON THE PLANET. Chris Bailey was extremely intelligent with an acidic wit, not many, if any, could match him. From reports I've heard, Chris was kind, warm, sincere and generous. A beautiful spirit gone way too young. I think he had a great time whilst he was here on Earth. Not many people can do what he did. He was a Punk Pioneer without even trying or even knowing that's what he was doing. Condolences to his family, friends, all his bandmates and his legions of fans and supporters.
One of thee most underrated bands of the whole punk rock scene of the 70's. They do not get the credit they absolutely deserve. You can tell that the Stooges were a huge influence on there sound. RIP Chris you were an amazing front man. These guys were incredible together.
Raw. untidy, sweaty, smokey, crude, wet shirts......and absolutely fab-u-luss!!! The Saints, for me at any rate, left an indelible mark on punk rock...I loved them and I'm sorry to hear of Chris Bailey's passing. You made your mark Chris and your legacy endures...and will, well into the future.
I bought the first album when I was 15. Now I'm 60 and just heard the bad news. My deepest condolences to the family and you. I gonna pick up the guitar and play "Nights in Venice", one of my favorites, just in memory from the bottom of my heart
Fortunate to have grown up with this superb music lighting the way. Last time I saw The Saints was at Cockatoo Island in 2009 and the music was a strident as ever. Thanks Mr Bailey for your part.
The energy never lets up from start to finish, everyone's red hot. I have the audio of this on the All Times Through Paradise box set, and bits of this clip were in the Radio Birdman documentary but the picture and sound weren't this clear. Don't know where Ed found this copy but happy that it's available so we can see what a force the Saints were at this point. (EDIT: just heard today of Chris Bailey's passing on 4/9. Godspeed Chris, you left behind a great body of music with the Saints and your solo career.)
I’d seen the older version of this footage but this is a fantastic upgrade. Ed I’m sorry for your loss. I know your paths in life diverged but for a moment you guys were lightning in a bottle. I’m not sure an SG has ever sounded better. Absolutely incendiary performance.
my best life friend was in your classes at high school - 2 years older than me. so i always had these early tales about you guys. met you a few times - party in milton, accidentally in paddo, and of course in concert at queens hotel etc in brissy. then Ed started doing a new album every 6 weeks in the 90s. it's all part of my life soundtrack and always smiling memories. thanks for your post, Ed. appreciated by all your fans, i'm sure
... just wow! to this amazing gig and the sonic gems as the legacy to be revisited again and again ... the saints have filled a v special part of my heart of hearts over the years and have jammed out with dear friends at silly o' clock to these songs
Immensely underrated and underappreciated band. Perhaps if they'd worn stereotypical "Punk" garb and engaged in the press-trolling tactics of that scene's better-known groups, The Saints would be more remembered today. Rest in peace, Chris -- thanks for the music.
A perfect vid. I saw various versions of the band but NOT this one. I saw various bands built around EK & him solo but none where he was as manic as this one.
To me, the most important band of the early punk era. Tight, fast and relentless. I was lucky to see them at the Belfast Punk Festival. They were as brilliant as I'd thought they would be.
Sorry to hear about the death of Chris Bailey. Met him at after a Saints gig in Wolverhampton (England) in 1977. Great bloke and band . One of the best Punk bands I ever saw.
Last saw The Saints at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne after seeing them play at Byron Bay. One of the truly great rock n roll bands. RIP Chris.
Truly ferocious rock n roll. RIP Chris Bailey. Thanks for sharing Ed - have seen this footage before but always very grainy and patchy sounding. Very sad news.
Lobby Lloyd, Coulored Balls, Radio Birdman, The Saints. Sharpies and punks. Aussie rock and roll has balls. This Perfect Day is the best buzzsaw ever. Melancholic, angry, nihilistic.
One of the best live bands I saw during the early punk days... Saw them in Scotland in late '77 and then again in London in early '78. Brilliant!!! CHRIS BAILEY r.i.p. xx
I just found out about Chris.. RIP 🙏. This is a great recording and you are ripping it on the guitar, Ed! Just brutal and awesome. I grew up with your music and never stopped listening. Thank You 👊❤️.
I will always remember this concert. It is hard to find good quality of it.Luckily I remember. What a night. Also Birdman and Hot Spur.joints on the verandah.
Wow only just seen this. I saw the saints circa 1978 at the Woods club in Plymouth UK, so long ago but I remember it vividly. They were loud as fuck and Chris was amazing as a singer with incredible stage presence alongside Ed who was a phenonemal punk guitarist . RIP Chris.
Saw them a year later at Hunter Valley vineyard supporting....Air Supply. They played with backs to the audience but played fine, and I for one already had their record.
Thanks for this Ed. One wonders, being Paddo town hall ‘77, might the Saints have borrowed some of the Birdman audience that night? Another man done gone. Vale Chris.
Quality is fabulous. Is this from the 16mm film that was shot that night? And the segue from Demolition Girl into an absolutley incinderary version of Nights in Venice.
I saw the Sex Pistols last gig @ Winterland,- I saw the Ramones first gig in D.C @ Childe Harold. I saw a hundred punk bands between......But I never saw a better set than this.
Yes this is really good. I remember buying the 1st lp on its French release ( was it late 76 ? Or 77 ?...) Anyway i really got into the first two records instantly. I saw the Saints live once, with a young lady, named Jeanine i think, playing the bass. 1980, near Toulouse, "Monkey Puzzle" album....Then later Chris Bailey elsewhere in France...

Terribly sad news. Mortal flesh, yet his intellect lives on through his music. .
My deepest condolences Ed. This is so sad.
So sorry..
RIP
Very sad news, R.I.P Chris Bailey. Greetings and hugs from Sweden.
He will live on in the music we all love. RIP
I'm Stranded, Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds, an eternal love affair!
I was there... a life changing ,euphoric, unrelenting ,shattering, thunder clap .... RIP Chris Bailey
me too! I was 18
I'm American and he seems like the most American boy ever until he talks lol
I envy you. I bet you didn’t want it to end.
Greatest punk rock band ever. No one close. RIP CB.
👏🍻
This is like grunge and punk before it existed lol but to be fair they were greatly influenced by the Stooges
@@leahflower9924 Different swagger, without realising or caring, Saints created this genre.
R.I.P. chris bailey 🇦🇺❤🥁🎤🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🏴☠️
Cherry red! With a Bigsby!!! (Blesses himself)
Vale Chris Bailey

I was there. The cameras should have turnned around for a minute to capture all of us in the audience. This was history and a lot of fun.
Taped this on VCR off RAGE must have been 30 years ago, played it over and over until the tape deteriorated. Loved it then, love it now.

Chris Bailey, RIP
I remember this gig, worked on the outside broadcast recording of this day, as a techo and videotape operator.
Working for the ABC. Great sound and camera work.
Thanks for your efforts. 🙏Well done!
This is so much better than the Pistols lol
78% good
RIP Chris Bailey. This is phenomenal footage and we watched this again in 2004 when making Punk Attitude

Heartbroken 💔 started listening to the saints when I was 14, now nearly 34, 20 years of rock n roll, Chris Bailey forever, The Saints forever
So sad . The saints where and still are one of my favorite bands ever .
Absolutely incendiary stuff. Bloody love this recording
These guys changed my life, as 16 year od girl in Melbourne. Hearing them for the first time on RRR was like loss of virginity. RIP Chris.
Fortunate to have grown up with this superb music lighting the way. Last time I saw The Saints was at Cockatoo Island in 2009 and the music was a strident as ever. Thanks Mr Bailey for your part.
Also saw them at Cockatoo Island, I'll give him nothing else, but standing in front of me was Malcolm Turnbull, head and legs going. Vale Chris.
So glad I found this i was born in 64 and i grew up with punk and heavy metal. RIP Chris Bailey.

I'm like an old man I run to find the shore

quite possibly they'd had 'an extra cup of coffee' before going on
RIP Chris Bailey. Discoverd you guys in the 80's and have been a fan ever since.

wonderful footage. Vale Mr Bailey.
Grew up in Brisbane- was 15 when this was filmed and was definitely NOT allowed to go and see these degenerates - LOL
OHHH to go back in time.
A genre of man that has not been replicated. Poetry by Chris, riffs by Ed. Thank you RIP CB
One of my first gigs as a naughty 15 year old. Still love Ed
Brilliant. Thanks Ed, this is a great version.

I saw you guys around that time doing a lunchtime gig at NSW Uni Roundhouse. It was great.

I imagine that most people in the crowd would like/love both Bands.

Saw The Saints play at Chequers during this time. An experience!
For me that never saw the band live, this is 17:10 of gold.
RIP my friend.
This Perfect Day stands as a classic song. There's just something special about it, and in this live version, I can hear much to influence Husker Du.
This kind of power takes man to the next galaxy and back
Historic!! RIP Chris ... way too young.
RIP Chris Bailey...
What a great band.
This's how I pray.☮️
Hell Yeah!
I saw the Sex Pistols last gig @ Winterland,- I saw the Ramones first gig in D.C @ Childe Harold. I saw a hundred punk bands between......But I never saw a better set than this.
🤯🤯
Australian suburban flamenco. Makes MC-5 look tired. Chris was funny ... as well ...
RIP.
RIP Chris ❤
Look at the crowd...no safety pins, no pink or green hair, no plastic and barely any leather. Punk hadn't happened yet here are the saints! Xx
Insanity how Ed can play like that, it looks like he’s about to give out any second yet he keeps it going.
PS: Just dug out the flyer, it was March 78. Sorry.
Awsome
Greatest Australian band ever. Is there any live footage of One Way Street in a similar quality?
This dude has a potty mouth love it lol
Rippin'
Yes this is really good.
