G'day, I'm just a simple-unassuming gal from Brisbane (Australia) with no particular claims to fame or anything interesting to say, but I do come from the town that The Saints hail from. It was local news that The Saints got their song played on radio, and managed to get themselves on England's Top Of The Pops. Those boys were playing around our local school halls just a few years prior. Even in 2024, I'm still chuffed that you, an American, actually bought a record by The Saints in the 70's. I doubt there'll be any statues made of the boys, but there is a mural somewhere in Brisbane of the boys and the late Chris Bailey (singer) said it was bloody awful. Anyway, thanx for checking them out again... Tata!
You’re wrong on two counts. 1. Chris Bailey can sing- he is just singing in a particular style on this song. That does not mean he doesn’t have other tools in his kit. 2. The Saints were the world’s first punk band. They were doing this before America caught on to the trend they created.
This song was used as the theme for an Australian TV show called Spirited in 2010/11. The show was about the ghost of a 1970's English punk rocker who starts to haunt an uptight dentist. Such fun!
Really the yanks had Punk before Aussie dont thing so mate this song hit the number in the UK a year before the Sex Pistols . What American punk did that ????
For a less generic sound to punk, have a look at the Cosmic Psychos. Been around since the early 70s and still going. Here’s a few recommendations: - Nice day to go to the pub - Go the hack album - Custom Credit etc
They were playing this style of music as early as 1973. I suggest you try the two Saints videos. The Saints - Just Like Fire Would - Official Video - 4K Remaster Austech Bruce Springfield did a cover of this song in recent years. The Saints - This Perfect Day / Know Your Product (Audio + Video merge 2023) A relatively short appearance on Top Of The Pops followed by The Saints' classic. Two songs in one reaction video.
According to many sources the saints were the first punk band! The saints formed in 1973 a year before the Ramones and three years before the sex pistols!
Still one of my favourite songs , just hasn't aged.

The Ramones released their first record before the Saints.

Dont call The Saints 'punk'. They were punk before it ever existed. Name a single US 'punk' song before this, please....
