I tended to shy away from the relentless seriousness of 90s rock, but Suze DeMarchi had a great voice. IMO the best Baby Animals track was "One Word". Great guitar hooks and clever use of lyrics against the rhythm.
I was a gigging pub musician during the 80s early 90s, it was big rooms, big show, big lights, delay stacks, big trucks, 5 crew and gigging 5 to 6 nights per week then gambling/pokies was introduced to Victoria - killed the scene overnight. All the big venues throughout Melbourne cut their rooms in half for pokies or turned them completely over to gambling. Gambling is evil.
I was lucky enough to see this bands first couple of gigs as my mate was one of their original roadies-there was only 50-60 people there and we got drunk with the band afterwards-next year they were on MTV and they took off-even better live than on record-I’ve seen them at least 10 times since and they never let me down 👍❤️🎸
I WAS AT THIS GIG IN 91. It was filmed at a TV station in Melbourne for MTV. Baby Animals was the opening act for Southern Sons. We, the audience were sitting on 4 sides of the band. When Baby Animals finished, half the audience left the Gig. The producers made us all move to 2 sides, so it looked full for the Filming of the Southern Sons Gig. Most of us were really there for Baby Animals.
Something to remember when you’re pondering all the great tracks/artists is our population. We only have about 25 million people here now, and back in 1980 it was only about 15 million. There are more people living in the greater Los Angeles area today than there were in Australia in the 80’s

That debut album was brilliant... FOUR great singles off it, Rush You, Early Warning, One Word, and Painless. All of them are terrific. My favourite is probably Painless, and it's probably the slowest of the four.
Man this bought back my childhood, its only now am i realising how freaking lucky i was. I saw the Baby Animals at the Horden Pavilion in 1991, just brilliant soo tight & the absolutely talented & strikingly beautiful Suzy just pumped it out. Soo good.
Never seen Suzi perform without a guitar before. Makes me curious as to why she’s not playing one here. They were a great band…they commanded attention at the time. Early Warning is one track that comes to mind that you might like. You’re pretty much right about the pub rock scene here. It absolutely was where bands cut their teeth, and cemented their reputations. It hasn’t gone away altogether but it has splintered into a more diverse scene with smaller venues (and probably far fewer record sales)
In about 1993 I went with my 16 yo daughter to a Baby Animals concert at the convention centre in Canberra. It was great. My hearing has never been the same since then. They were LOUD. But amazing. The Pub Rock scene dies pretty suddenly once pubs were allowed to install poker machines, their entertainment venues got converted to gambling rooms

The correct term for a 'crowd' of anything is called a Collective Noun. For example: a cow, a herd of cows; a sheep, a flock of sheep; a fish, a school of fish. My favorite collective noun is the one for a group of bank employees; it's a "Wunch" ... Go on, say it, they are a "Wunch of Bankers". Well George and Alex, Chris has finally unleashed one of the best kept secrets of Aussie rock acts of the 90s. There is only one thing better from this era than Suze DeMarchi singing live, and that is Suze DeMarchi playing guitar and singing live. I understand what you are saying about the English Working Man Clubs being "grim" venues, where bands had to be good otherwise the patrons would let them know in no uncertain terms. Whilst these clubs may not be so prevalent now, the British crowds are still feared by up-and-coming bands at British metal/rock festivals. I know of several foreign bands that were sh*tting themselves before playing at festivals like Download and Sonisphere (and other Knebworth or Reading festivals (not far from your old stomping ground, I wouldn't think?). Some bands even experienced online threats to throw bottles of urine on at them. So British fans still have a reputation for being a bit "grim". Anyway, fantastic content as usual. I like how OCD your back ground is, perfectly symmetrical right down to the ornaments. Well done i like it. I wish everyone on youtube was so OCD like me!
Suzie is actually a good friend of my uncle's wife. My mum went to my aunts baby shower & sat next to Suzie the whole time & had no idea who the fuck she was but said she was the nicest person she'd ever met, chatted to mum to the whole day. Wasn't til they left that my other aunty said to mum, u know who Suzie is don't ya? Mum was mortified she didn't recognise her but mum is alot older so doesn't really know who's who & i bet that's why Suzie enjoyed mum's company coz they could talk about normal stuff & not her & the Baby Animals & their career
I miss those days when Sydney pubs had live bands, big name bands playing. They would jam in hundreds of people, well beyond a safe capacity, there was no health and safety rules, no plastic cups either. The joint would be dripping with sweat. Unfortunately, nowadays, pubs are like mini casinos and those rooms which were formally used for bands are full of pokies (i.e. slot machines) because they bring in more money than live music does. Also I think rock is kind of dying which is sad. Ahhh the memories.
What is a baby wibble called? :) And a group too... If you owned a Flock of Seagulls would it sing to you???? Great live rock band, you can hear why all of those famous bands wanted them on the bill. I agree that the OZ pub scene turned out a lot of really tight bands.
Oh, boy! There are still so many more acts of the same calibre to come. From the mid 60s to now. Scenes & styles change but they keep coming. By the way your intro is bloody fantastic - takes me back to watching Benny Hill as a young boy in the 70s Thanks for the vids
Suzi - pure rock chick. The pub scene in Australia was always transient. There’s more money in bistros and pokies now so the venues lost their band rooms. Plus musical tastes changed in the mid 90s in favour of clubs, DJs and “man with a guitar” acts that can start playing when the punters are finishing their deserts. Doesn’t mean the scene is dead - it’s still around if you look.
Come to Melbourne - still alive and well down here. Getting to gigs in Sydney through 80s and early 90s I know how much you've lost. .R.I.P - so many (Selinas, the Hoey, Annandale, Kardomah...etc)
So getting back to bird riddles. If four or more types of birds are gathered together they get a specific title. i.e , Four or more Gulls are called a "Flock". Four or more Geese are called a "Gaggle". Four or more crows are called a "Murder". What do you call three Crows hanging out?..."Attempted Murder"😊
Suze DiMarchi is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. And she had more swagger and grit than 90% of rock frontmen of that era. She ended up marrying Extreme's guitar God Nuno Bettencourt. They were together for 16 years and produced a daughter, Bebe, who is now an actress.
A 'Treachery' of ravens? I've never heard that. As far as I know it's always been an 'Unkindness' of ravens. I'm going to have to go and research that now.
You're right guys - a lot of timing chops in this one - but they pulled it off brilliantly - guitarist and bass singing BV's in a different meter to Suzie's vocal - while playing their parts - amazing. For a more "even" ride (but every bit as enjoyable) check out 'One Word' and 'Early Warning'.
My thoughts on the Australian Pub Rock scene decline, is that there were several factors that led to its demise. Noise Regulations was one reason. Another was change in Fire Safety Regulations that required significant upgrades in venues that the venue owners didn’t believe was financially justified. Introduction of poker (slot) machines in Aussie pubs. Introduction of random breath testing (RBT) on Australian Roads. All those changes happened around the same time. The Fire Safety Regulations beside being expensive also meant you couldn’t squeeze in as many punters. The RBT meant punters weren’t drinking as much, so there wasn’t the value in putting on bands. Pubs found that they could make more money on Pokies than presenting bands.
it doesn't come down to working a room, it comes down to being good as hell, that's what it comes down to. i've tried to work a room and if you ain't got it, you just ain't got it.
One word to describe Aussie Rock - TIMELESS Unfortunately australian music scene has been flooded by reality TV shows, and covid lockdowns significantly disrupting music venues
All the talk and plaudits tend to focus on Suze, and honestly it's pretty easy to focus on her. But Dave Leslie on guitar is just so damn good. Right up there in the Australian guitar pantheon. So tasty. EVH hand picked them to tour with for a reason. Gifted Dave one of his guitars for a reason. For better or worse, the drummer and bassist no longer perform with the band, but Suze & Dave are still bringing it.
G'day heddie dude here...what's a baby platypus called? You'll never guess...was the pokies that killed live music in Oz... horrible destructive things..

Suzi is still kicking arse today sounding better than ever Oz rock queen 👸🏻
I like how OCD your back ground is, perfectly symmetrical right down to the ornaments. Well done i like it. I wish everyone on youtube was so OCD like me!
The importance of live music in the community.
Agreed.
By the way your intro is bloody fantastic - takes me back to watching Benny Hill as a young boy in the 70s
Thanks for the vids
Right on!
Cool!!!
So getting back to bird riddles. If four or more types of birds are gathered together they get a specific title. i.e , Four or more Gulls are called a "Flock". Four or more Geese are called a "Gaggle". Four or more crows are called a "Murder". What do you call three Crows hanging out?..."Attempted Murder"😊
a group of Jaguars are called a shadow..
thats sooo cool
George, I dream of going to Chicago just to get to Buddy Guy’s Legends blues club…. You’ll have to get in there and report back… 👍
Suze DiMarchi is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.
They are all bastards
us australians eat our national emblem. it is very good if cooked properly
The POKIESs finished off the pub rock bands. ie the Whitlam's. (?) song about blowing up the pokies ... or was it Powderfinger?
That KICKS
Turned us into a nanny state
all these regulations were bullshit
it doesn't come down to working a room, it comes down to being good as hell, that's what it comes down to. i've tried to work a room and if you ain't got it, you just ain't got it.
One word to describe Aussie Rock - TIMELESS
Unfortunately australian music scene has been flooded by reality TV shows, and covid lockdowns significantly disrupting music venues
They were all great
G'day heddie dude here...what's a baby platypus called? You'll never guess...was the pokies that killed live music in Oz... horrible destructive things..
Hi Guys great to see the Baby Animals finally made it on to your channel they have plenty of tracks, check out the black sorrows some time you won't be disappointed cheers
LOVED IT - Thanks for being here on Aussie Week!
When Hutchence died she was the alternate INXS lead singer. We never got to see it. Bugger
What could have been. His loss was tragic
