(I’m) Stranded: The Saints. Released February 27, 1977.
The Saints first appeared in Brisbane, Australia in 1973. The four members were high school buddies living under a heavily conservative state government. There is a post on UA-cam with only fair sound of them playing a gig in 1974 in punk style. (The similarities between The Saints and Ramones are striking. Both were serving up punk in 1974 and both recorded three great albums in a row with their original line-ups before personnel changes.) After being rejected by every label in Australia they released "I'm Stranded" bw "No Time" on their own Fatal label in September 1976, the remarkable single actually reaching #96 on the Aussie charts. It was re-pressed on British labels and got rave reviews. Sounds magazine called it "Single of this and every week." Jon Savage wrote about the 45 "...the toughest, most brutal noise yet. The Saints' "(I'm) Stranded" sounded as though it had been recorded in a wind tunnel, with the singer and the rhythm section hanging as gusts of guitar noise rushed past them."
For a very short time they were the darlings of the fledgling punk world and with the wind at their back they recorded their classic debut album, (I'm) Stranded, in just two days in Australia. Ten marvelous songs filled with surging waves of buzz-saw guitar and superb musicianship, "('m) Stranded" is a classic of the genre. What a racket they served up, much of the lyrics indecipherable under the noise. Singer Chris Bailey barks out songs filled with alienation. bitterness and resentment as in the title song. "Like a snake calling on the phone/I've got no time to be alone/There is someone coming at me all the time/Babe I think I'll lose my mind/'Cause I'm stranded on my own/Stranded far from home/I'm riding on a midnight train/And everybody looks just the same/A subway light it's dirty reflection/I'm lost I don't have a direction/Chorus/ Look at me looking at you/There ain't a thing that I can do/You are lost, your mind is a whirl/Baby such a stupid girl/Chorus/ Livin' in a world insane/They cut out some heart and some brain/'Been filling it up with dirt/Do you know how much it hurts?/Chorus".
There's not a dud on the album. Plenty of fast punk as well as ballads like "Messin' With The Kid" and mid-tempo songs like "Story Of Love" are all beautifully rendered. Ed Kuepper, guitar, Kym Bradshaw, bass and Ivor Hay, drums, are one blitzing force. The Saints second album, Eternally Yours, adds horns on some songs and, no joke, is just as good as the debut. Their third LP, Prehistoric Sounds, finds them leaving punk for a more bluesy, jazzy sound, but believe me it is terrific too. None of these albums were big commercial successes; the lads did not fit in with the punk image. The snobby British press did not like their long hair, Bailey's sloppy appearance (he sometimes smoked a cigarette on stage) and the fact they did cover songs didn’t help. But Nick Cave has said, "They were kind of god-like to me and my colleagues. They were just always so much better than everybody else. It was extraordinary to go and see a band that was so anarchic and violent." And Sir Bob Geldof has stated " Rock music in the 70's was altered by three bands: Sex Pistols, The Ramones and The Saints."
These guys came from Brisbaine ,Aus during the early 1970s when there were intense restrictions against anything considered anti authority. Police were incredibly corrupt and violent, raiding parties and Rock shows on a regular basis. In other words these guys are the real deal, bare knuckle defiant Rock n Roll. Good call on noticing their similarities to Iggy and The Stooges as The Saints were big fans of them. Some say " I'm Stranded" was the 1st Punk single before Neat Neat Neat by The Damned.. RIP to the great singer Chris Bailey.
The influence this song had on Australian music is astonishing.

I'm surprised I didn't request either of these songs, because I love The Saints. I'm from Brisbane, and The Saints are one of my local heroes. Their first two albums are worth checking out!
The Cure have been my favorite band since 1980 & I first saw them at the Whisky in Hollywood ( Where The Doors started ) a 500 seat club & within the decade they were headlining Dodger Baseball ⚾️ stadium 🏟 a 50,000 capacity venue. In 1979 they & Joy Division ➗️ did a few shows in London. Wish I'd been at one !
I was in a local Punk band circa 1984 ish and We all went to see them and I thought they awesome - the guitarist fell asleep 🙄.. they played A Forest and I was ecstatic being a bass player myself 😅

I come from the town in Brisbane that The Saints hail from. It was actually news over here that The Saints did Top Of The Pops. We did see The Bee Gees... I know, they're British, but... come out of Brisbane and take on the world.
But our local garage band, The Saints, actually doing an important TV show in England really meant something to us small town Brisbanites. Thanx for checking them out again.

I knew older people that had known them during their Brisbane days, and they were celebrities on TV for many years before they returned to the UK. I just don't know if it's our right to claim them. Perhaps we should just let them be the fish that got back into the sea while being in our bucket for 10 years. lol
@@Sspringgrainn 😀Barry especially, always looked more Brisbane than Manchester , most folk from there are usually a little damp and have a forlorn look about them , you can’t say that about the Bee Gees that stepped off the boat back here in the late 60’s with their deep tans and pronounced accents , god love em 😀

We had this guys named Billy Thorpe from Manchester, who became a big rock singer in Australia. He actually began his TV career in Australia at age 11. But Billy Thorpe gave off a more Australian impression than The Bee Gees did.. In my mind, anyway. Oasis are from Manchester, right? I suppose in comparison to them, the Bee Gees do have a more Antipodean appearance. lol
I just imagined The Bee Gees always talking and walking like nice English boys, and never thought they would have had Aussie accents. lol
@@Sspringgrainn I don’t mean they had the Paul Hogan classic back woodsman drawl 😂.. but I recall they had a hybrid twang which was quite appealing and once back here they relatively quickly regained the local tongue . Let’s be honest , both Brisbane and Manchester were just stopping off places on the way to their spiritual haven in the USA , of which I’m sure they became citizens eventually. Yes , Oasis are from Manchester and the 2 Gallagher Bros have very thick Manc accents Springrain 😃

Well that took me back a long way the late 70's and now i am in my late 70's thanks for bring back some great memories the Saints were one of the first punk rock bands that changed music in the seventies along with the Sex Pistols and the Ramones. Peace out.

I think The Saints put out among the best punk records of the 70s. Both their first and 2nd albums are classics of the genre and among the best. I always liked the "bored" looking aspect of them. They just have this massive, huge sound and Chris Bailey just looks like he doesn't give a crap while sneering his way through every line. By their 3rd album, they got more into soul and motown and through the 80s they were more roots rock. All great stuff, but those early Saints records - wow. "I'm Stranded" is a contender along with "Blitzkrieg Bop" as being the first true punk single too.

It's worth a segue into the Guitarist's catalogue (Ed Kuepper). Recommend Honey Steels Gold and Serene Machine. And yes, he doesn't care
I remember they were criticized by some punks because Know Your Product had horns... so silly and narrow minded, because it's a great song, and they were a great band.... they started their own form of punk in Australia independent of the New York CBGB's scene where the Ramones were emerging... so punk emerged simultaneously in Australia and NYC
One of your best reactions guys! I was so excited to see your reactions to these songs, as I still have my copies of these singles which were released here in the UK in 1977 and 1978 respectively. This Perfect Day was a hit in the UK but sadly Know Your Product wasn't. This is The Saints at their best!
The Saints were first class punk, maybe the best of all. Ed Kuepper, the guitarist and composer, later forming the great Laughing Clowns, is a genius. He drove the band toward horns and R'n'B, resulting the following year in one of the greatest album of history called Prehistoric Sounds. You should try some songs from it (such as "Swing for the Crime", "All Times Through Paradise" or "The Chameleon"), you'd be surprised. Note that the band separated in 1978 and that Chris Bailey, the singer, kept the band name (not an honest thing to do, Kuepper was legitimally upset). The second song you reacted to ("Ghost Ship") was from this second version of the band and to be a little rough, not The real Saints.
Thanks guys for doing this. I am on a mission to make the best quality videos for reactors to use on their videos. So I have created the RemasteredVersions channel. I do admit to taking clips from other channels and either merging them with a CD audio or just uploading somebody else's upload. The reason why I do this is because people give long titles to good quality clips, and they're often impossible to find. That’s factually incorrect that the saints are credited with getting Punk going in the UK , it’s ok to be proud of yer indigenous bands but it’s not ok to invent accolades for them that isn’t warranted . FYI I’m an original Punk and I can assure you that me n most if my tribe from 76/77 credit The Ramones and to a lesser degree Iggy with the birth and flourishing of early Punk here . Of course I’m Stranded will always be in every Punks top 10 but that’s about it . Hope that’s settled this for you 👌

I heard stories that The Saints single put Malcolm McLaren in panic mode, but I'm not sure how true that is. Whatever the case may be, The Saints were playing this style in Brisbane as early as 73, and Radio Birdman were doing something similar in Sydney in 1974. The Stooges and Mc5 were their thing. Either way, nobody needs to flex as to who did it first and who shaped who. That's just bullshit semantics.

Hmmm. Not bad, but far from great. It's like driving a Lada. It gets there but not very well.
I remember when The Saints did that horn blowing introduction for ''Know Your Product'' on Countdown. It sort of surprising that their new song had horns - I though I must admit to not being mad about The Saints in their heyday, and I wasn't too thrilled about being dragged to a Saints gig in 1985. Chris Bailey was drunk and slurred in speech, and I wasn't too impressed with the music.
I then got to see Chris and The Saints at the Australian Made concert in 1987, and they were great. My favourite by The Saints is ''Just Like Fire Would'', which I do think you two should check out.

I saw The Saints and Radio Birdman at the Paddington Town Hall in April of '77. This was just before they took off to the UK. I can't even explain the intensity.
Love both of these songs, great band. Chris Bailey, at times, gives me a bit of a Mark E. Smith from The Fall kind of singing/speaking vibe. Great choices.
Love The Saints, as they did punk without the stereotype sordid bad behavior.
Lead singer Chris Bailey (with The Spazzys) did a cover of the 1962 hit ‘My Boyfriends Back’ for a TV show back in ’06. It’s a real gas; Check it out kiddies. RIP Chris.

Great songs! Latter-day Saints work such as ''Burns Like Fire Would'' and ''Music Goes Around My Head'' (a cover) are worth checking out. I also like ''Do They Come From You''.
But I would really like you guys to check out James Freud And The Radio Stars - Modern Girl nzoz1980. I like the Countdown clip on the nzoz1980 channel. James Freud joined Models after ''modern girl'' was a chart hit.

Never a fan of the first track but didnt mind "know your product" back in the day. Heres a couple of Melbourne bands worth checking out in the punk vein, 1. Painters & Dockers - "Kill, Kill, Kill" and "Die Yuppie Die" for starters and 2. TISM - "Ol man river" and "Greg, the stop sign" Both bands had plenty of other good tracks but you could start with them.
Great reaction to these songs from this great band, Chris and Cynthia.
I'll do a list of songs by 'The Cure' once I've checked on which ones you have already done so, I can see if it's their earlier or later tracks that you're not fond of, because their sound changed later on.

They still play limited gigs.
The Saints sound like distinct bands sometimes because the original lineup went their separate ways after the first couple of albums. Chris Bailey kept using the name, much to Ed Kuepper’s displeasure.
Kuepper’s post-Saints stuff with the Laughing Clowns and then under his own name, and then The Aints(!) are all tremendously diverse.
If you haven’t done Just Like Fire Would by The Saints, get to it. If it’s good enough for Bruce, it’s good enough for youse. (See what I did there?)

This Perfect Day was the first punk single I ever bought in early summer 1977 and it remains in my top three punk singles. Know Your Product from 1978 shows how the group had moved on. It is one of those singles that slipped through the net and is one of the best of the 70's. Try Nights in Venice next

On the topic of Iggy Pop, you know him. But have you seen him doing I’m Bored, on Countdown? An iconic moment on Australian TV. You can thank me later.
I was at the Countdown studio when Iggy did I'm Bored. He spat on the side of the stage and it almost hit me and my friends. You can hear us going ''ugh.. gross''. A lot of kids booed him and some yelled ''go back home poofter'' after he left that Countdown platform. The Haniers should check it out.

If that was TOTP they had a policy of forcing bands to mime and it was the done thing to make that clear by the Punk bands . Chris ..😳.. NOTHING like the cure . Have you done A Forest by the Cure ?

It was also a policy of Countdown that bands mime. Unfortunately, two hosts of Countdown Revolution (an updated version of Countdown) protested against the mime policy live on air and were fired for the action. This completely killed the whole Countdown thing. I'll leave that story up to Gillian and Hayley to tell, because they were involved in some way and I think it's still a delicate matter for one of them.
A few years later the Countdown studio was used for a new music show called Recovery, which was an all-live music program. Sadly, most of the music on that show was shit.
Recovery was a funny though. What could go wrong often did.
@@OnceWasRStrathfield it’s a shame that , cos bands that were tight and were good live had nothing to fear , it was only studio bands and artists that were weak live that had anything to worry about - imagine all the dross that would’ve been weeded out right at the start of their career cos they couldn’t sing or play well live 😳.. abs NO ONE from Stock Aitken and Waterman stable of manufactured throw away pish would’ve got invited back a 2nd time imho .

James brother if you ever make it to Aotearoa new zealand don't mention you don't like the cure in front of my girl Tori it won't end well for you she has the kidney death punch 👊✊ you will need to be on dialysis for the rest of your life. I'm lucky i don't have kidneys anymore Tori removed them with one punch. Because I'm stupid and started on about her supposedly first and second husbands Robert Smith and Nick Cave and 😢 it hurt me way more than her 😢😢😂

Probably the best music I heard from The Saints. The music sounds good but the style of singing does nothing for me which is why they were never a band I got into. Second song with horns just is a weird mix to me and probably something like this was first thing I associated with The Saints.
