- ''The Saints' single "(I'm) Stranded" burst out of Brisbane, Australia in 1976 as one of the landmark recordings in the punk rock revolution that changed music forever.
In the mid1970s, Queensland was under the thumb of a corrupt and politically repressive government, and the number one enemy of the state was young people. It was in this environment that singer Chris Bailey and guitarist Ed Keupper met and bonded over a love of music.
The Saints brand of loud rock was shunned by the local music industry so the group took it upon themselves to record their first single, (I'm) Stranded. They sent the record to media in the UK and within weeks, The Saints were the darlings of the international music press. EMI records in London signed the band the first time an Australian artist had been approached directly from overseas. The Saints recorded their debut LP (I'm) Stranded for EMI in two ear-shattering days. Within six months, the Saints were in London at the epicentre of the punk revolution.
The group's individualistic, Australian scepticism alienated them from the fashion-conscious punk rock scene and the band imploded in the UK. However, their legend has lived on and their legacy is Australia's independent music industry which grew directly out of The Saint's bold move. The extraordinary story of The Saints and making of (I'm) Stranded is retold by Saints' songwriters Chris Bailey, Ed Keupper and the musicians they inspired, among them Brad Shepherd (Hoodoo Gurus), Robert Forster (the Go Betweens), Damien Lovelock (Celibate Rifles) and Rob Younger (Radio Birdman).''
I found this band 5 years ago, and now I listen to them every single day.
Criminally underrated.
RIP Chris Bailey. Saw them in London. Chris dressed, drank and smoked like a 70s right wing reactionary Northern comic whilst the rest of the band seemed to compete to be the most uncool band ever. I think one of them wore a tank top. They were absolutely brilliant, one of the best gigs I've ever seen in my 45 years of going to gigs

When I say that Chris Bailey is one of the most important people in our Australian Music History, that is a massive understatement.
Today's news of his passing is like losing a family member.
I'm shattered and devastated.
Chris came into my life in 1976, when I was supposed to be doing school homework.
Listening to Sydney's JJ 1540am radio ( thanks to the Gough Whitlam government ) I heard (I'm ) Stranded by THE SAINTS.
IT STILL RANKS AS ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDS I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY 61 YEARS ON THE PLANET.
Chris Bailey was extremely intelligent with an acidic wit, not many, if any, could match him.
From reports I've heard, Chris was kind, warm, sincere and generous.
A beautiful spirit gone way too young.
I think he had a great time whilst he was here on Earth.
Not many people can do what he did.
He was a Punk Pioneer without even trying or even knowing that's what he was doing.
Condolences to his family, friends, all his bandmates and his legions of fans and supporters.

Spot on and sadly his nephew passed yesterday. I spoke with him when Chris passed away. Jimmy Barnes even phoned him that day. Stranded was about not getting picked up and stuck at a Brisbane train station. Rob was very upset about Chris passing. Hope he has found happiness on the other side with him.
Chris Bailey is my favorite punk singer ever. Prehistoric Sounds will never get old.
I like the diversity of that album, it reminds of what bands like violent femmes and pixies would do later on; A mix of punk but with a great song writing sensibility.

I'm from New York, which is Ramones territory, and I do dig the Ramones, but this is my favorite punk record of all time. I'd put it up with the Fall's "Grotesque", but I'm not sure that's considered punk. I bought the album out of a bargain bin back around 1978 and have been listening to it ever since. Here in the US, not too many people knew about them, but with me they were always my favorite.
Chris Bailey is truly one of the greatest RNR singers of all time...if Iggy Pop and Van Morrison had a lovechild. RIP
Unusual thing is their second album Eternally Yours might be the equal of I'm Stranded. And the third, Prehistoric Sounds, is totally dope too. One of the 10 greatest punk bands ever. For sure!

I remember in the 80’s Rage had some kind of write in or contest or something where you got their first 4 records on vinyl. Imagine my surprise when they actually showed up at my 16 year old doorstep. What a great band.

I'm in this video. Saw a girl at a party who looked familiar, and it was me. Also, dancing to Nights in Venice. I remember that night so well. Great times in the 70s before they left (wish everyone didn't do that), and in the 80s when they came home. One of my favourite bands, and they're from Brissy...

One of the best gigs I have ever been to would be Chris Bailey in a small club in Greville street the stage was low and he played as if he was in his own lounge room .
The follow-ups Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds are essential to this great band's legacy as well.

Candace, I was at that gig too. My employers at the time in Kilmarnock warned me against taking a 'sicky', but I went to Glasgow, then Edinburgh, then saw the gig. I slept in the train station and of course missed the job.
I played the first single so much my Dad smashed it. I raced to the shop to buy another one, then bought the album (and the next two). All for the love of rock'n'roll.
To us kids in the suburbs of Melbourne in 1978 it just was us . No fashion just stranded
Back in them days their band wagon was a old Ford Transit. Ivor once tore the engine down to the crankshaft and rebuilt the bottom end in my parents' driveway.

Just get 'stranded' as a gift on uk press 77 from my favorite record dealer in town, never had the album on the 7" perfect day. Now I'm totally overwhelmed, what an album... 10 stars out of 9. And what do Google tell me... CHRIS Bailey dead in April 22. Rip. Great respect. Thx for loading.

I don't know anything about Australia. The only cultural reference points I've got are Skippy The Bush Kangaroo, Rolf Harris, and ("I'm) Stranded" by The Saints; which I bought from Rough Trade records 202 Kensington Park Road when I was 15 years and played it in my bedroom over and over again all day every day for about a month.
There are other interesting animals, people and bands from Australia. I wonder at your avowed ignorance.

I have to say I recently discovered the celibate rifles and they are one of the best rock n roll /punk bands I've ever heard. They led me to Radio Birdman and the saints. Who should be far more popular than any other punk bands from that era.

Of course, I still possess it.
The late/great DAMIEN LOVELOCK was their charismatic front man - 03/08/2019 RIP mate.
Damo was very intelligent and wickedly funny.
Their song 'SOMETIMES' is close to being my fave RIFLES song, though ask me tomorrow and I'll have a different fave song.

Kent Steedman is one of the greatest Guitarists of all time.

Fcuk that was great to hear. So many memories. Full on funtime. So raw. So original for their day. They ignited so much for OZ music and youth energy that just flourished for a very long time thereafter.

hello the saints sorry i was the one who got on stage and wrecked your entrance a bit at dingwalls london when you had got back together not surprised i got booted off the stage by the bass player and got my head kicked in and stomped by the crowd but it was one of the best gigs and best nights of my life x

Great, great album, very early, Nights in Venice I consider the best number of Stranded, mix of VU and Stooges. Oh, I wrote this during the listening. The talking heads confirming
Later on they introduced horns, soulpunk, listen to "Know your product". Also great. Chris Baily (live(d) in Amsterdam) en Ed Kuepper brought punk to a new level, as musicians. Saints, Buzzcocks and Dead Kennedys for me the best Bands from this era. Cheers!

I drove on my moped in Holland, South East Drenthe, to my friend Jan in 1980 We were 17. And listen to the Saints over and over. I also brought my records, in a plastic bag. I had a wooden plate in the plastic bag with the same size as 33" records so the records wouldn't bend while transporting them. When I think of the Saints, I always see this wooden plate in my thoughts. Know my product.
Many years later, around 2000, Jan's younger brother Bert goes to Australia, because he trades in tropical fruit. He asked many times in Sydney and Melbourne for records by the Saints. No reactions. Nothing. Vanished.
As in the documentary: The Saints didn't fit in. Like i.e. the Jayhawks

Yes love their rythem section, no one ever talks about them, thats the two of this band that stood out to me always by their presence. Nothing wrong with Rose Tattoo btw esp in '77-'80, dirty loud street music and in your face. Too much division and elitism in Australian music to this day. God bless Sounds mag , always fair and open, championed the NWOBHM three years later.

As someone with a leather jacket and the piercings, this could not be any more true.
It's something in your soul, not in your closet. If it doesn't speak to or from your heart, no trendy clothes will hide that fact.
That was why I loved them, Ruadhan. There wasn't the pretence of being something or someone else. The music came from our political situation in Brisbane at the time - it was pretty cloying, to say the least. And most people's parents at that time were overly controlling, so we needed to break out.
that's not really the point of the comment. the punk "uniform" - which the saints didn't adhere to (musically or sartorially) was the reason they weren't given their dues in the UK. in the early days of punk rock - before the tabloids turned it into a folk devil, and introduced ridiculous codes of dress and behaviour that newcomers thought they had to adhere to - bands didn't have a formula they were expected to adhere to, but that whole thing of punk having "rules" had taken hold of the scene by the time the saints moved to England, and they were ostracised for not fitting the mould.
The punk uniform and hairstyles were a product of Malcolm McLaren..... who was only interested in marketing. He didnt give a shit about the music. Just the image and the marketability.....
Damien lovelock pretty much wrote a song about scenes such as punk on the first celibate rifles albums- where do I go.

They never called themselves 'punk'. They were around before punk.
The main riff in the song playing at the end is practically a direct quote of the Stones’ “Sway,” and “Stranded” is, as Chris says, a Bo Diddley riff, yet they make it all sound new.

aT 18,IN 1978 i drove to Brissy from Melbourne with agirlfriend to see The Saints,QLD drug cops kicked in our motel door,drove me to the airport and put me on a plane back home telling me I was banned from Queensland for life,true story-I'd only ever smoked a joint at that stage,true story,Bjelkes QLd sucked arse-he's dead and I've been back a few times,lol,weirdo times,still breathing and smoking weed when I can,Bjelke's dead and gone.What a culture shock!!!

When i was buying punk records in the UK in the 80s i never saw any records from this band.Not even in any mags or lists of punk bands did i see them.Ramones yes but not these lot.Maybe because they were just unheard of here,dont except them as a punk band anyway like i dont really except the ramones as that either

Comments on You Tube are proving that Americans and Canadians are 55 years late in discovering STATUS QUO.
The late RICK PARFITT joined THE STATUS QUO in 1967, just before they dropped THE from their name.
In 1968 they had an International Hit song with the Psychedelic " Pictures of Matchstickmen "
Francis Rossi was 19 when he wrote it.
They then transformed into the Hard Rockin' Boogie Shuffle Band in 1970, which the rest of the world embraced and the U.S.A. and Canada totally ignored.
STATUS QUO were light years better than any Bands that the U.S.A. and Canada could offer.
Thus, radio stations and record companies blocked STATUS QUO from reaching the attention of the people who are only now discovering the best and greatest Rock Band in history.
The only 'crime' worse than this in music history, is that Francis Rossi set about destroying and dismantling STATUS QUO in the early-mid 1980's.
He formed the core of the Band in 1962 with the late ALAN LANCASTER. Band member 1962-1985.
A series of under handed events devised by Rossi, forced Lancaster out of the Band.
They opened LIVE AID at Wembley Stadium on 13th July, 1985.
John Coghlan ( was forced out by Rossi ) left the Band after 20 years, 1963-1982. The greatest Swing/Shuffle Drummer in history.
If STATUS QUO had received the exposure that they deserved, then they would've been bigger than all the mediocre rubbish that did get airplay and publicity.
America and Canada had hundreds of F grade Boogie Bands that all sounded the same.
They had Generic Bands that made beige look like an exciting colour.
Everybody in THE QUO ARMY give a warm welcome to all the Americans and Canadians who are now discovering STATUS QUO.
There is no other Rock Band that comes close to being as good as QUO.
The most exciting Rock Band in history.
The most passionate music fan is a QUO Fan.
From Factory Workers to Doctors and Lawyers, we all came to an objective conclusion that the greatest Rock Band of all time is STATUS QUO.

The 2021 version of alienation isn't being cut off from other like minded people and being a minority of 4 or 5 friends, -it's living on social media, separated from real human contact.
Rather ironic, - they know hundreds like them, that they'll never meet in person.Reassuring,no doubt, yet useless and unproductive.
Up until '90, there were very diff, divided scenes not only in various countries, but within.In the States,- LA, Akron, Cleveland, Detroit,Boston, D.C. and NY, - all very specific.
The two singles (I'm)Stranded and This Perfect Day are great. Amongst the handful of "punk" singles that are still worth hearing today. The similarity of Keupper's guitar style to that of Johnny Ramone's would be an uncanny coincidence if it had emerged in isolation, but I think Keupper must have heard the Ramones first album, which may have been available in Australia on import in 1975. Also, Bailey's vocals have more than a little of the Iggy in them for him to be ignorant of the first two Stooges LP's, which again, may have been available on import to those who were interested, on the French pressings that were available through one or two underground outlets in London around that time. The NME, largely through the fevered fantasies of writer Nick Kent, had alerted interested souls to the existence of the Stooges, the MC5, Dr Feelgood, Eddie & The Hotrods, The Ramones and others of that ilk, suggesting that in these groups, both past and present lay an authentic seam of hotly attractive degenerate rock 'n' roll that could, given half a chance, be the antidote to the anodyne posturing of the Rock aristocracy.
The Ramones album was released in April, 1976 so 75 is impossible.

The burning issue is, can Japanese people enjoy The Saints? I think they would be a much beloved commodity. Look at bands like The Michelle Gun Elephant, Teengenerate, and others. The Saints are only trailed by The Ramones in their influence.
