45k now 😁, the bond is real and I thought I was done doing long trips with Donnie but I working towards the biggest adventure yet it's probably going to happen in 2025 but it's going to be epic, a dream come true if I can pull it off.

as for the scooter, the truth comes out indirectly. having to change the variator, throttle body and rebuid the fork TWICE is pretty bad as reliabily goes. A scooter is reliable when you dont change anything other than oil and maybe brake pads, not big components, especially at 40k. There is a romanian here on youtube with a honda pcx that made a video at 50k km's with absolutely zero issues, even the drive belt was ok (almost double the 26k km recomended intervals). i know you tore on the pcx because it has a rear drum brake but as it goes, that's a reliable scooter, with nothing to change, and even lower consumption, 1-1,5l/100km saved on that mileage ends up to 1000 euro saved, so well worth it.
Also, being ready to rebuild an engine for 1k euros on a 3k eur scooter is crazy, that's like buying a 50.000 euro car and being ok with a 15k euro engine rebuild after a few years, it would be catastrophic. Many japanese scooters reach 100, 150k kilometeres after 10 years with nothing other than oil changes and belts, that's true reliability. Im not saying SYM's or other chinese brands are bad but just goes to show, the popular wisdom is true, even today nothing comes close to yamahas or suzukis or hondas.
Considering the purchase price difference and and the life it has lived with frequent off road excursions and packed full of luggage I'm happy with it. And the my engine doesn't need to be rebuilt anytime soon, I'm just saying it's not an issue and I have no reason to sell it. Sure the quality is not as high as a Honda, but also the maintenance costs and purchase costs are also not that high. The fork seals cost 30 euros and the variator is 50 euros and the throttle body was a manufacturing defect from Bosch and that was covered under warranty. I'm not saying the Japanese manufacturers are bad, far from it they are excellent, I'm just looking for the best value for money and little Donnie delivers in spades.
i don't entirely disagree with this, the japanese know how to build vehicles. but I wouldn't say sym is far from them, especially in terms of engine quality. if you ride ANY scooter as hard as alex rides donnie, trust me, something is going to break. poor donnie went through mountains, mud, even continents. japanese scooters can indeed get to 100k+ IF you ride them in the city for commuting. most sym scooters will also get very close to that with regular maintenance if you ride them sensibly. I've seen a lot of hondas/yamahas start burning oil and having to go through a full engine rebuild after 50-60k kilometers and i'm pretty sure they didn't cross continents nor climbed mountains. they mightve been used to deliver pizza as far as i can tell 😄

I find it interesting your R1100 GS is tiring to ride long distance. If that is just off-road, I totally get it. Not counting my Ural sidecar rig, it is heaviest of my daily riders. It is more work in stop and go or lots of fast transitions up on a mountain road. The rest of the time it eats miles as seamlessly as my other machines including the modern Triumph Tiger Sport 660 and the even more touring oriented 2010 Ducati Multistrada. The thing it trumps all my bigger bikes on is stability in crosswinds...this is why I am taking it on my upcoming 6000 mile tour which includes crossing the (perpetually windy) Great Plains of North Dakota and Montana for 1200 miles...each way.
It's not all that tiring but it can't hold a candle to the lounge seat of a maxi scooter.
