It's been over 20 years since the last time I played this game, but I can still remember a lot, even parts of some levels. Such a great game. The first truly 3D gameplay with 6 degrees of freedom. In fact, I think it's the _only_ game with 6DOF that I ever played. Along with Descent II, of course. Kudos for this video.
What are the 6 degrees of freedom.? I've always struggled to understand because my useless brain tells me there's 8 but everyone says 6 so I'm just confused haha, I though up, down, left, right and the 4 diagonals would make it 8. I must be counting something wronf
@@liammcgarrity5038 X Y Z axis. You can move in the X axis in both directions, Y axis both directions and Z axis both directions. Diagonal movement is a combination of those. Think of a table. You can put an object on the table and move it left - right. Thats the X axis. Then you can move it forward or backwards. That's the Y axis. But you can also lift and drop the object. This is the Z axis. In total there are 6 basic movements and the rest are a combination of these. The 6 degrees of freedom thing is a bit of a marketing thing though.. plenty of 3d shooters have stairs or let you jump. But in the case of Descent you have technically unlimited movement in any direction.. until you hit a wall. While the Z axis (jumping / flying) is usually very limited in most other games. But it is there
Such great memories of this game from my college dorm days. Had a group of friends back then and one looked like the actor Anthony Edwards so of course his nickname was "Goose" from Top Gun. We all started playing Decent against each other in a LAN and the Top Gun callsigns caught on because of him. I ended up with "Jester". I had played this game on my own through the Pluto levels so I had gotten very good with my control and could fly circles around the others most times, but every so often someone would catch me unawares and kill my ship. I still remember those days where I'd die and from 4 doors down the dorm hallway I'd hear the echoing call of "Whoo Hoo! Jester's Dead!"
I meant these things with no offense and another problem was the third secret level being skipped. By having no deaths was impressive but it was a disappointment with the other two cigarette levels being skipped.
Most hated enemy was the machine gun gray ones - I hated them - almost always a guaranteed reload if I didn't know they were about to appear. Surrounding a key with them so that they attack the moment you grab it was such a D move.
Ah yes, the Class 1 Drillers They were by far the worst enemy in the game due to its ability to hitscan you before you even realized what was happening. Glad the vulcan cannon got nerfed in later games.
Pardon my asking, but will you do the Revenge o' Dravis expansion pack for this game? A friend of mine was playing it before, including secret levels, but he passed away shortly after he started. I just want to finally see the rest of it. 🙏
I want to give my feedback. I want to say it was pretty good for the most part but the point that really disappointed me was where you skipped the second secret level by taking the regular exit instead of the one that was the exit to the secret level to the second secret level that is

@@RaskolnikovPM XYZ linear motion is three DOF. You can also rotate around X, Y and Z. That's 3 more DOF.

If there's one thing I loved about the briefings, it's how the player character is such a snarky smartass to the bureaucrat. :P
i remember finishing demo levels and that was enough!
this game was installed in the high school pc tech lab.. multi player , great for the rainy days

Hello, how can you see it so nice?
DXX-Rebirth :) Or D2-XL, but that is a bit more radical change..
@@linux_longplays there was a patch back in '99 or so for Voodoo.
If I watch this video I will have done more with my life than congress has done in 50 years.
