Ultra smooth moves, awesome playthrough ❤told a colleague of my first brush with x86 gaming, needed a video showing the fully 3D roaming playstyle, found a nice looking one with original gfx/sound (and HUD/cockpit off/fully zoomed, like I used to play it back then) but with a "novice"(?) player and your video was the "expert" link I shared 😉. Perfect 👌 Also admiring the level designs in your automap using the same (ship) controls in an intuitive way was pretty awesome as well! Thank you for this video and your time and effort put into this! 😎Much appreciated!
Very underrated game, IMO. If you thought Doom and Quake were great for 3D maneuverability in their time without ever playing this game, you missed out. This was the only game I ever played that legitimately made me forget which was was up, if up even mattered after a certain point.
One of the first 3 fps games I ever played. I think the first 2 I played were Doom 2 first level and Heretic. When my dad bought a 200mhz pentium overdrive pc in 1996, I played the demo disk Descent Destination Saturn. I never had the full version until later in life, but as a kid I did have Descent 2, which is still often my favorite mid 1990s shooter of all time.
@Fox Ayaan i really appreciate your reply. I found the site through google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Whit only one exception… I would like to see all cutscenes as well; I remember being 7/8 years old and play this on the ps 1; but completely forgot the actual story line…
Watching someone go back and play this amazing game makes you realize just how far ahead of it's time this game actually was. As far as I'm aware, it was the only game at the time that not only allowed you to, but required you to move and think in three dimensions. I know that now you could compare it to something like, say, No Man's Sky, until you realize that it took roughly two DECADES for a game even remotely close to this to be made.
I like how many of these levels took me close to an hour to beat when I was a child, and this guy breezes through the whole game in an hour and a half.
I love how ruthless and efficient your style is! Speedruns are obviously impressive in their own right, but there's something almost beautiful about the the way you weave through the robots, lobbing out homing missiles with no hesitation, sweeping through the game like a one-man army.
I remember playing descent in my youth, while listening to descent. Courtesy of fear factory. How I miss my youth. So many great memories. Playing this game was one of them.

Playing descent on Kali online was the best thing I remember during the 1990's. I still remember the battles in the Minerva level. You memorize every single turn and twist and learn how to listen to sounds to figure out where your enemies was hiding. When the voodoo 3D video cards came out, it completely changed the landscape. Good times.
I wonder if we ever did battle. I spent so much time in high school in insane multiplayer battles online. Such good times. Descent was the first game I was really good at in multiplayer. I once wiped someone out using nothing but flares.
Years of my childhood condensed in 3hr 20 min. Although I was always more of a plasma guy myself. Never thought to line up shots with fusion though, some pretty good ones in there!
Fusion sucks when playing with keyboard, it's harder to aim this way. I could never put the Fusion cannon to a good use myself and I thought that it was essentially garbage until I saw this longplay.
Fusion takes a while to figure out how to use effectively, but once you do it's deadly. There were certain anarchy levels where I really dominated with it.
As a vintage player I rate this one above doom. I admit it was an easier parental pass compared to the the demons of doom screaming in pain, but fighting that reactor. [SELF DESTRUCT SEQUENCE ACTIVATED], is a phrase that will forever echo in my mind.

This is one of the few games I've played that allows you to shoot out the lights, and it actually gets dark. I grew up playing this, thinking every game had lighting mechanics like this, and I have been disappointed ever since.
Played this as a kid with the old school flight stick (using a com port, of course) It truly was ahead of its time, as the only other flying game was the far more pedestrian flight simulator. I would like to add it also has one of, if not THE, best soundtracks ever.
Old comment, but you missed the star wars flight sims I guess. X wing and tie fighter were awesome and required power management. A little more complex than the arena game that's out now.
What a remarkable level of mastery and artistry. You have attained a form of fine art I never knew existed before watching this (and your D2 longplay, which is even better.). Wow, just amazing.
My Descent strategy was to rotate my ship so any curved corridor was arched up under me. Then i would keep my perspective as if i were cresting a hill and levitate up to spot my opponents while exposing as little of my ship as possible. You really did have to think in 3D to succeed at Descent.
I was feeling nostalgic, and I remembered my mom played this game. She didn't get far like you had but you sir are a fucking artist with this game. My favorite part was when you destroyed the reactor and saved the hostages and exiting by a hair. That was spicy shit.
Decent was the first game I purchased for the Playstation. I got the station for Christmas and I do believe I came with a race game. Anyway, I drove 120 miles to purchase a MEMORY card and Decent. When I got home I think I played for 6 hours straight and I was the only kid in town that had one. It was AWESOME! this video brings back some great memories. Thank you!
I never played Descent, I didn't knew it existed on playstation, I had Forsaken, which is a bit more modern clone. Too bad there isn't more games like this, and that schmups are stuck with 2D.
I have never seen anyone fly so smoothly in this game, it's such a joy to behold. I'm sad to admit I never finished this, and sadder still to say it's because of the drillers, blech. I should give it another shot.
Yeah, the drillers are nasty. Not surprising they have such a loud and distinct "activation" sound to warn you. I think one weak spot of the drillers is that they can be destroyed with a single homing missile. It's pretty effective against them, at least when you know where they are. A lot of saving and reloading should do the trick.
This game definitely was - and still is - pretty much ahead of the time. That's why it dint't get any popularity and further development. I still remember the map on pressing TAB, where I couldn't get where I am and where to go! The more it's amazing to watch how you are getting done with it! Thanks!
Great Vid. I am just doing my first ever play-through on Ace difficulty, though not nearly as skillfully as this. The biggest differences is how I approach bosses (Level 7) now vs 20 years ago. I remember hiding in the central tunnels trying to beat him on Rookie years ago, with multiple saves over months. This time, I beat him within a minute not dying.
Wow! You killed the last boss in seconds while it can take me some hours and in a lower difficulty. Great game play!!! Wish I could finish the game in just some 3 or 4 hours like you but I like to explore and get most of the secrets.
Now these are some gamer skills right here! I only played the demo of this game AGES ago so I never got the whole experience plus it was kinda scary for me as a kid, but damn do I still remember the sound effects and the cool music! It must have taken a long time to memorize the controls and enemy locations!
This game needs a remaster. As much as I loved Descent 1 and 2, those perfectly smooth, rectangular hallways are really jarring. Imagine how cool it would be to fly through a mine that actually felt like a mine, with jagged, irregular geometry.
My dad and I used to play this a lot back in the 90s whenever I visited him, but he only had the shareware edition. Still, I had lots of fun with this game.

One of the first truly 3D games, mid '90's, DOS. The others were Carmageddon and Terminal Velocity. I played this on a Pentium-75, 16Meg RAM, 2 Voodo cards. Couldn't get enough of it.
Descent didn't have good 3d ports. The 3dfx original was the best, and there were some features missing, but improved graphics. Descent 2 however was a joke because it didn't properly shade the enemies, so they were full bright, and looked better in software. Never tried the virge version, but I think it was both broken and slow. Today we have like two ports, with only one being viable with dated graphics, and the other one improved graphics but broke the game and isn't developed anymore. As for carmageddon, it was ok, but the Android port ended up being the best version.

Amazing gameplay, especially as you're only using mouse! You must have played this for hundreds of hours as you know all the robot positions and never get lost in the mines. I think level 5 was a nightmare for me but you fly through it without any hesitation!
Amazing gameplay. I remember watching my dad playing this when i was a kid. I never managed to fully dominate it or install it again 😭. Had to be happy with Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance.
i remember when it was out i tried virtuel reality for the first time in a store. It had this game installed so i was looking around with the googles. VR never broke thru back then =) and hardly now.
Heck, your comment brings me back to 20 years ago when I sat on my brother's lap at the age of 4 or 5. He would pilot the ship and would tell me when to fire the weapons. Good memories
Played this to bits on local lan, then the internet wasn't really great and you could go online using KALI. But they charged for the service, so you needed to reconnect after the (10minutes?) timelimit. Sort of how Vocaltec Internet Phone worked back then. But man we played keyboard only back then. Ahhh the memories!
Damn this game is cool, I experienced it on my parents first Mac . Along with the computer came this pack with a bunch of stupid games, as well as having Descent. Always stood out, and I played the shit out of it naturally.
This game is a testament to what was possible in 1994, because not even the makers knew the game would age this well. Even it's spiritual successor Aquanox Deep Descent isn't this well oiled.
I was debating with a guy that deny this game is a shootemup. The creator of Descent said they conceived it as a 80's arcade game that uses technological advancements of the 90's. That's literally describing a 2D shootemup that evolved to 3D. I would not deny this game beeing a FPS but I wouldn't deny it beeing shootemup either.
I could never figure out the controls of the space ship that you move around in. I had a basic keyboard setup and moving around was difficult lol! I love the sound effect in this game. Was top notch back in the day. The upgraded laser sounds, the missiles, fusion cannon, etc. Just excellent.
I'm 54 years old but this particular game I remember as if it were yesterday. I would play online with my friends. great memories.
Play the game👍👍👍👍👍👈
Me too. I played it on Kali.
Me too. Remember all those good days playing with buddies with coxial Ethernet cables…

I love this game. It was my favorite and I wish they would make it for the PlayStation. I would love to relive The Nostalgia
So cool. Thank you for uploading this. And for destroying those TVs at the start of lvl 2
OMG! This is a beautiful classic.
brings back memories when video games are way ahead of their time whatever happened to those days
1:06:44 Level 12, one of my favourites!
Amazing gameplay. I remember watching my dad playing this when i was a kid. I never managed to fully dominate it or install it again 😭. Had to be happy with Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance.
The red heavy hulks and the purple fusion hulks along with the screams of the drillers gave my nightmares as a child 😱😅
i remember when it was out i tried virtuel reality for the first time in a store. It had this game installed so i was looking around with the googles.
VR never broke thru back then =) and hardly now.
I never had any interest in games except this series. I wish it were available today on modern platforms.
There is Forsaken on PC.
And Overload.
Great game, Superb music and Sound
really amazing player, first time know I missed so many levels ahead. :P
What an amazing game
My brother and I would sit in my dad's lap as he controlled the aircraft and we fired the weapons. Wow this brings me back
Heck, your comment brings me back to 20 years ago when I sat on my brother's lap at the age of 4 or 5. He would pilot the ship and would tell me when to fire the weapons. Good memories
@@Kaizen777 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I spent so much time playing this as a kid!
I first saw the shareware version of this game at a CompUSA when it first came out. It was so amazing. They were featuring Doom 2 beside it.
Thanks for the long play, watched the whole thing star to finish
12 minutes in and this is as far as my 5 year old self could ever imagine. I always thought I was almost done. Oh how wrong I was.
I remember this being one of those games you could link 2 PS1s together and could play but I never got to do that. I would love to see that done.
Thank you for your contribution.
That Titan Mine sure is a Hulk 'bot paradise.
I would love for the descent series to make a comeback! I grew up playing this. It's what got me into FpS in the first place.
It did.

There is Forsaken
@@Kaizen777 yeah, but I dont have a PC :(
This game is a testament to what was possible in 1994, because not even the makers knew the game would age this well.

"I love this game"...me too!
I could never figure out the controls of the space ship that you move around in. I had a basic keyboard setup and moving around was difficult lol!
I love the sound effect in this game. Was top notch back in the day. The upgraded laser sounds, the missiles, fusion cannon, etc. Just excellent.
Hearing the Boss Robot ambiance at 36:07.... still gives me nightmares
Music to my ears :P
TheNekoMimiGamer My grandmother used to have an antique Fan that sounded just like the boss. So I’m both nostalgic and terrified when I hear it
