The answer, Samsung seems to think, is people who want not just an excellent canvas for multimedia, but also the multitasking prowess of a laptop without the extra heft. The Galaxy Tab S4 was designed to be a workhorse, featuring a desktop-like mode called DeX that sits on top of Android. It's supposed to provide a more familiar interface for being productive, while maintaining the great entertainment experience Samsung's premium slates are known for. The tablet also comes with an S Pen so you can mark up notes or sketch caricatures on the go. But really, the main purpose of the Tab S4 is to help you get work done. The trouble is, that is the one situation where you just can't rely on it.

In Dex mode (aka computer mode) most people would want to use the web browser, not an app. That’s one of the reasons why the Windows Store has been a failure.

in short this review is more of a nightmare to watch, she apparently doesn't familliar with android system.
she has no clue in term of setting up keyboard and default app in android, she doesnt even know when selecting the text, if press and hold there will be a big blue pointer shows up, and the big blue cursor pointer is draggable, it will be much easier to position the cursor and changing selection by dragging the pointer.
the reason she cannot open google docs in chrome but it worked in samsung browser is because chrome respect the default app setting and try to use native doc app to open the document, while samsung's browser opens it in the browser directly, and somehow the native doc app failed to load doc, i don't know why it native doc app didn't work, it could be a bug in google doc or she revoked the network permission for the app, or a out dated version of that app, but for whichever the reason, it seems it is more likely a google doc's issue rather than the tablet itself.

The device should work for the user, not the other way around. If the user needs to jump through hoops (change default apps etc.) to get things to work as they should then it’s not very user friendly.
@@tonydarcy7475 You mean like the iPad Pro? There are MANY user issues with that device, starting with apps not responding to the higher res display. Plus, as usual, Apple limits productivity on the tablet so as not to cannibalize Mac sales.

Riko42 the updates for mobile browsers to support new android features are not as quick - especially with chrome stable for android, samsung internet seems to support more ECMA features than chrome itself ironically or there are proprietory restrictions on other browsers not made by samsung - i do like samsungs browser and it is kept up to date with ECMA features, but chrome does operate a little faster on occasion although has less features in terms of plugins
Denver Naicker because when I buy I fucking 700 dollars tablet I should use a web version if I want. Their adverise it like this, they sell it like this, they price it like a laptop. They even charge you 150 bucks for a keyboard in order to have a true "desktop experience".

OxionG chrome and other web browsers have security restrictions and ecma standards implemented on a browser per browser case by case basis is currently unreliable to fully experience a mobile app on a mobile device, theres a reason why there are currently two streams of development

Not really a bad review but a lacking one.
1. Dex is a very good feature especially more games/apps are being compatible with it.
2. Cons about browsers and shortcut keys she stated can be fixed via software updates. Chances are, those problems would be addressed.
3. Being an Android tablet itself is a good advantage. You could install pirated/unlisted apk's vs strictness of IOS and windows. So having an android tablet with good specs is a good deal.
4. Fortnite skin: Galaxy! This is both a con and a pro. For gamers yes its a pro but for students this is a con. Remember ipad 2018 have more educational discounts for very useful apps? If Samsung is aiming for productivity, they should have targeted discounts for productivity apps instead. Or, both of it.

This review seems so biased against the tablet from the first minute! For example, she makes fun of the bring-up-virtual-keyboard key on the physical keyboard. Anyone using multiple languages to type would know why such a key is valuable (for example, I sometimes type in a few things in Hindi or Bengali instead of English and for that I need the virtual keyboard supporting those languages even if I have a physical keyboard attached).

Well to be fair, thats what Samsung are advertising it as. How else are you going to use it? As a media consumption device? If so there are better and cheaper options - including from Samsung themselves.
Media consumption and as my daily "notebook" to jot notes and sketches.
Some people expect it to be a computer replacement, which in my opinion is wrong. It has Dex that introduces a "pc-like" experience. So users always have to keep that in mind.
Regarding cheaper and better options... There are barely good Android tablets out in the market at the moment. Huawei has the new MediaPads and that's pretty much it. Until then, the Tab S4 is the only suitable replacement for my Nvidia Shield K1.
Cheap Android tablets are really slugish, i'd rather get an iPad.
Serious question though, why would you choose to spend so much money on Tab S4 when you can buy a brand new Surface Go for $250 less which has a lot more functionality? You can use it as a media consumption device, notebook and even laptop replacement. I'm sure that if you don't mind buying second hand device, you would find a Surface Pro 3 for less, which has a bigger screen, better performance, and you can get actual work done. Even Apple iPad at the same price (or second hand) is a better choice due to more apps being optimised for its bigger screen. I seriously don't understand why would anyone choose to buy this device over so many better and cheaper options out there.
Fritz Asuro I think the problem is that Samsung needs 6gb RAM minimum especially with DeX. Also why a chip that is nearly two years old, imagine if the new iPad Pro shipped with a 2017 chip? This is a premium tablet with sub standard specs!

To anyone that is wanting a review of this. I've owned a Tab S4, Tab S6 Lite, an iPad air and an iPad 8th generation. I've had an experience with both android and IOS I can tell you there isn't a huge difference. I'd personally recommend the Tab S4 for the price and the fact it has a really good pen that I'm addicted to. Overall Dex mode isn't really that bad because *it is a tablet*. The Tab S4 is an amazing tablet, one of the best I've used
The S Pen wins points for feeling more like an actual pen than any stylus I've ever used. Only for that reason i will go for the S3 for entertainment and S4 for work. I used the S3 1 week and dumpt my iPad. Now i go for the S4. People try them out for yourself their both good it's a matter of taste and budget.
i agree. nothing beats the s pen when it comes to a real pen feel. and you don't need to charge it and connect to bluetooth for it to work. i bought my s3 a few months ago and i barely use my ipad pro anymore because the heavy apple pencil tires out my hand easily and is noisy to use in meetings. i only use my ipad to read ebooks these days because no android app is as good as ibooks so far. i'm going to wait a while for the s4's price to come down before buying though

René van der Zalm I have the s4 tablet and it is definitely not perfect but nothing is really. I did have problems with the display timing out on it's own sometimes 2 seconds after being unlocked. That had me annoyed a bit but after downloading an app to keep the display on until I want it off, this tablet is pretty sweet and I agree with you, this S pen is awesome! I'm using it right now at feels and looks so much like a real pen that I've lost it a couple of times like a real pen. Lol! Not too nuts about the download speed as it's slow compared to my s8+ but it's not horrendous by any means. And the oled screen and speakers are both the best ever for an android device or any tablet on the market for that matter. It is a tad bit overpriced but I guess that all depends on your budget. Due to the glass back on this thing, you must get it in a case immediately if not sooner. Gotta admit it is a pretty looking tablet with a crystal clear display. Its definitely growing on me. This review here hardly covers any of the more important specs on this tablet. The 4 speakers (2 on top 2 on the bottom actually have a little bass which is a first for a tablet as far as I've seen/heard. 8 stars imho.
pokpokishification good call, it is a little over priced but minus $100 or so and you'll be a happy camper. It is a great tablet other than the high pricetag and I do agree with this reviewers advise on the keyboard. Logitech is the way to go there.
@@ChazSeamus28 I agree with you on all points. For that price they should have put the latest chip in it. But like i said i'm working with Revit, Inventor, Photoshop. So i only use a tablet for OneNote, for meetings and when i'm on the way Plane, Train, Hotel. And for taking notes and work with Dex i prefer this tablet. Ofcourse the Ipad is beter (also expensive) then the TabS4 but nothing beats the S-pen for taking notes and much more.

I use my s4 to run my business..I've ditched my desktop now. It runs all the apps I need nicely and I can use it for design work. Best tablet I have used and I highly recommend it.

Who cares about Dex! The important unanswered questions are: Is this the best Android Gaming Tablet? Is this the best Tablet For movies and video streaming? Is this the best Tablet for general internet browsing? Does it work with GeForce Gamestream? This review was completely hung up on the Dex interface which literally no one cares about apart from Samsung. Who purchases a tablet then gets upset because it is a poor excuss for a laptop.

Pro and still just bought an S4 to use as my on-the-go tablet since it’s much smaller, and now I get the best of both worlds

Suppose you are looking for a device that offers all the media consumption advantages of a tablet coupled with the ability to do some productivity work including Excel, Word, or Powerpoint. Suppose too that we want to keep the weight under two pounds for ultralight travel, don't want the extra weight of a special AC charging accessory, and also want to be able to be able to use a mouse. Given the limitations of the Samsung Tab S4, please suggest a device that can better accomplish all of the above.

For example, with the Galaxy Book 10.6 you cannot view any Amazon videos that you happen to own unless you are online. In other words, you must stream them. With an Android tablet, such as the Tab S4, you can download any Amazon videos that you own to your tablet so you can view them offline. An Android or Apple tablet,, such as the Samsung GalaxyTab S4 will also run apps that you cannot run on a PC. That is a big reason why people purchase Android or Apple Tablets. I already own an Asus Mini Transformer that essentially does the same thing that the Galaxy Book 10.6 does.
Your points are why i'm buying the tab S5e, just need a small/thin tablet to do mostly videos,office, or web browser.
Dex with keyboard and mouse are good middle ground.

Nobody wants tablets? Wtf, i do, many people i know like them and use them. Its easy, bigger and still light compared to a laptop or a phone.
Batteries can be huge too, i know they match the screen and all.. but then again.. tell me why my tablet with 9000 battery.. tell me why it lasts DAYS in comparison to my 4000 phone. Tablets do last longer, ive tested it. Anyways, i prefer a tablet for GPS, for maps, for movies, for games and for almost everything else.. except phone calls. Thats why i prefer smaller phones and bigger tablets. That way i get best of both worlds.

Is it stupid because you just didn’t agree with it? She brings up valid issues. The iPad Pro using iOS is not macOS but yet the keyboard shortcuts work the same way. So someone used to Windows can use it. This is just a bad tablet. She offers alternatives which is what a consumer looking at this review will value to know what purchasing options are out there. For the price, the way to go is a Microsoft Surface Go. Sorry, bro

The change language button on the keyboard usually works for bringing up emojis. At least on the iPad.
Not even surprised. Which is disappointing because honestly when this was announced I thought this one might have had a chance to compete. Using an old processor and a measly 4GB of ram was a boneheaded decision to say the least. Too bad. I went with the Surface Go instead.

She didn't even try to use productivity apps like excel, word, power point, which these tablets can handle with no issues. Heck I use my old note 10.1 2015 for that with a Bluetooth kb (which this one has and is better) and it's great! I can even plug in my Ducky TKL in it, just like this one. Apple fan is an apple fan.
I have. IPad Pro (2015) and am trying to decide between the 2018 iPad Pro, Surface Pro 6 or this Tab S4. I have iMac, iPhone X AND Galaxy Note 8...looking for a non-biased opinion without the name calling and snide comments
If ur looking for a dedicated pc I'd say go with the pro 6 over the i pad but if your fine with ios and the small flaws with the i pad then I say defianetly go with it pus the apple pen is amazing. And if you want the galaxy skin get that tab s4 thats about the one thing that's better😂
I forgot also if u want to transfer files from a USB or to one the new I pad doesn't let you do that

After this review I went and tried out this tablet at a Verizon store. DEX works much better than she is showing here. I have an iPad Pro 9.7 and after trying DEX I feel that it will be more productive for me at work due the increased ease of multitasking.

Android is a different ecosystem compared to Windows so expecting both to function the same way is ridiculous.

Virtual keyboard option isn't useless. It's there if you want to use emoji or use voice typing.

4. Fortnite skin: Galaxy! This is both a con and a pro. For gamers yes its a pro but for students this is a con. Remember ipad 2018 have more educational discounts for very useful apps? If Samsung is aiming for productivity, they should have targeted discounts for productivity apps instead. Or, both of it.

I just bought the tab s4. Love it. I find it real easy and brighter screen than tab s3. DeX mode is great and easy 2 use. No problems at all.
Android is not designed for desktop.

You can't sum it up to its dex mode. Its l'île summing a MacBook pro up to its touchbar. Its zone functionality not the product

I actually bought this tablet as a replacement to my 2015 MacBook Pro. I was sick of my MacBook constantly dying, with its terrible battery life and when I needed it the most, it failed on me. I used the laptop to work remotely but that and the power cable were just too heavy to bring everywhere with me.
LogMeIn works decently enough and gets the job done. There are some annoyances but that's more the app than Samsung. Slack works perfectly, however. I just bought the device 2 days ago so I'm still learning but so far, it's helped me far more than my Mac.
If I had 1 issue, it's that my Note 9 spoiled me and the lack of a theme engine, always on display, internal pen storage; the 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of on board storage, and no edge panel is a hard thing to swallow. Basically, I want an over-sized Note 9 without the curved edges
I would buy this over an ipad just because its not an ipad. I didnt even know it had the dex mode when I bought it. Nice extra feature but I bought it to use a tablet with a kick ass screen. Works decent everywhere else and the sound is good for watching videos.
I really like this tab but unfortunately the price is not fairly justified

and theres literally nothing wrong with the note 9 a relative/friend or idk who but my dad knows him he has a note 9 and i saw the screen on his yesterday when we were watching something and it looked amazing and it was a smooth phone.

I get what she is saying, Dex is a fantastic feature for the S4. But it is still in it's infancy. I don't notice it much because the apps i use on it all show up full screen, and if they don't i just switch to tablet mode and then it does. But that does sort of defeat the purpose. But the fact that you can snap back and forth, and when you do plug into another screen you can use either interface sort of masks these problems. in order for Dex to be a stand alone option, it does have a long ways to go.
So many reviews out there about I like this and I like that with barely any I don't likes in them. Your's was a complete contrast with many I don't like and a few likes. Watching yours and others I'm able to get a complete picture. Without your review the picture is very one sided. A very refreshing and nice review.
