This is 100% the best intro series to scratching on UA-cam. I love how thorough you are and you explain and show the fundamentals of playing with the sounds before just diving into things.
Hi guys, I've been extremely busy with different projects, gigs and private life and as a result I was not able to make new video's in the last two weeks. I'm back in the lab right now and the new video's are dropping asap! Thanks for the support and patience. TLM
You all prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account? I somehow forgot my login password. I love any tricks you can give me
@Maximus Deshawn thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Dude, you have no idea how helpful this is!!! I've been practising alone for almost a year and can't do a decent scratch because I never had anyone to teach me but because of all your lessons. I AM NOW ABLE TO SCRATCH AND LEARN THE FUNDAMENTALS CORRECTLY! DAMN I'M SO HAPPY AND GRATEFUL! May God bless you DJ TLM!
Thanks again DJ TLM, I am now working on transformer cuts. Apparently, I am also not ambidextrous and having difficulty even with the basics. Still, will work on it little by litte. 👌
Thank you so much for this teachings you made a valid point in step 1 about crawling before you can walk and i think I've been walking and skipped crawling basically I just grab the cross fader and an accapella from a vinyl and try try with little results or change then frustration sets in and i leave it for a while and keep coming back trying to use the cross fader without using the baby scratch. At a point i even blamed my mixer saying it's not the right one it doesn't have enough curve etc when i get a better one I'll go hard but those were all excuses like the saying a bad worker always quarrels with his tools but you're teaching has given me hope and reassurance you're a great teacher with so much wisdom thank you TML you da man kid
Man, this is my 2nd comment on DjTLM's video, but i been binge watching down the list on this channel. I been rhyming, writing, producing music since i was 14. And from learning how to dub my lyrics on a song using just 2 tape decks and a mixer back in the G, to mastering the 4 tracks. And now i can mixdown a song with pro tools, a laptop, and a mic better than alot of people i know with high end sound boards. And i learned all that myself cause music is my passion. Anyway, the whole DJ aspect is something i always wanted to get in to especially since my rave day's. I always had a ear for music and know bout bars, patterns, hooks, just all around groove of any song. Sorry bout this long comment its my passion down here in the N.O. but your videos is like a class session when i need a quick how too. Keep doing your thing on your channel.
Good tutorial, easy to follow. I read a comment on another video & it said the military scratch goes like this : chop, chop, baby, chop, baby, chop, chop. When you say this out loud it’s easy to understand how it’s meant to sound 😊
I'm not a scratch dj but i played around with songs and taught myself that last scratch you did having no idea that it was called the military scratch 😂. Salute
Thanks for your videos man. I really appreciate you. Not good yet, but I'm definitely making some progress. I'm stopping on part 4 for now. Got to get my fader and baby scratch coordination down. I have it more with the channel fader than the cross fader. Gonna keep practicing though.
skipped video 3 because i didnt think it was something i wanted to utilize, watching this video made me realize the importance, thank you for putting my ass in place on slowing my roll!
Just started practicing with the fader today. Funny my left hand wants to do different things. Going to spend lots of hours just getting my left hand to work separate from my right. Very excited for the outcome though. Practice practice for sure with this one.
Mis felicitaciones es un excelente tutorial y por supuesto un gran maestro, la perfecta combinacion, estoy muy contento y ahora a practicar y practicar una saludo y un fuerte abrazo de aqui desde el estado de mexico
Pete Beard Yup, nowadays we can find anything online. I use UA-cam all the time to find out things about everything (mostly software related). I had to learn a lot from listening to tapes and trying to emulate what I heard on the tapes ;)
Great tutorial, I'm actually a beginner controller dj. This will help me bring a different flavor to my sets . I hope you do a tutorial on crab scratching. It's very complicating for me.
This is so great. I love your scratch series. Thank-you so much for putting it together. I've been looking for something just like this, and stumbled upon your Channel thanks to a UA-cam recommendation. Now I've subscribed.
hello sir, I thank you for taking the time out to assist with these lessons. You are a awesome. In session 1 you said there was a link you would put in that we could use to practice. Can you repost that link.
Thanks! Just started practicing scratching and you make it look easy because when I try it's not clean at all. Anyways I've been practicing so much my hands and arms start cramping up haha you the man tlm
bro, I just started learning how to scratch... today! lol You're videos are very well put together, and informative. I just got done watching the first 3. Gonna practice and check out video #4 this weekend. Thx for putting these up man! Respect
Thanks for your tutoring, brother,I’m looking forward to my birthday day gift from my wife (I already know what it is,lol)a D.J.set with the whole set up
Hey DjTlm, just got into DJing bout a year now and your tutorials are one of the best I've seen. My question is, which hand would you prefer on the record and fader. I'm right handed, so I heard u use your left on the record, but it feels awkward... Any advice???
Funny that you mention this. I talked about this a bit in my latest scratch tutorial video (online tomorroe). Some DJ's can do everything with both hands. It depends on the type of scratch for me though. Some scratches rely more on the fader movements and others are more about the record movement. I do some scratches on the right deck and some on the left because in some cases I prefer to have my right hand on the vinyl and other times I want my right hand on the fader.
djTLMtv Leo Amio Hey Leo, When I started, I was in the same boat. I'm right-handed, and had some trouble developing my left hand. You're always gonna notice one hand stronger than the other, but definitely practice with both, and try to focus on getting that left hand stronger. Years ago, they used to force left-handed people to write with their right hand in elementary schools (ask your grandparents about it). All you gotta do is focus on developing that off-hand, and keep practicing, and you'll get it :)
Hey TLM! Loving the videos as usual! I have a couple questions about learning these techniques with small controllers which don't have LED feedback on the jog wheels. More specifically the ones for Serato, should I be looking at the virtual jog wheel or the waveform in the software? Also, do you have any tips for using small jog wheels? It sometimes feels as though I would need to use vinyl instead to have more control and make more precise movements while trying to learn these techniques...
Do you have a fader set up video? My main question is regarding how “tight” to adjust the cross fader. I have a Rane 72 and I’ve added some tension but I’m not sure it’s enough. Is this purely to how I like it? Being new to scratching I don’t really have a preference yet and would appreciate any input or guidance. Love the videos old and new. Thanks
New to tour channel. Thanks for the vids. I used to dj in my late teens/early 20s & just regifted myself a pair of 1200s. I have a question if you or anyone can answer. Which vinyls are good for scratching?? Thanks!
Well, you could basically use any sound off any song, but there also something called battle records. These are vinyl records with beats and a selection of sounds put on there especially to use for scratching. Look for titles like Super Duck Breaks, Scratchy Seal, etc
great work man i learnt a lot from you already. i haven t watched all tutorials but i have some questions, you might have already answered? i have problems with needle skipping sometimes ( with the weight already set to a little more downforce on the record ) can this damage the record if the needle sticks too much to it? or could it be because there are scratches in the record that cause skipping? (I often use the same old, badly used, before I got them, records) can this damage the needle? I tried to calibrate the needle, like shown in some tutorials, and that is making skipping worse because it seems to be too easy to get lift up. is applying too much force with the hand on the record causing skipping?
+Mot m Scratch needles are built for scratching, but they will (slowly) damage. Same thing with the vinyl. It can taker a beating, but every once and a while you will need to replace the control vinyl and the needles. Is the hole in the middle of the vinyl too big? That can cause friction which will increase the chance of skipping. Is the vinyl straight? If it's not straight it can 'wobble' easier and skip. Just a couple of things you can check
+djTLMtv thx for taking the time to reply and the help with your tutorials I appreciate that. I sort of figured it out to avoid the needle skippin it happens rarely now. keep up the great work ;)
What up TLM, cool videos man, much appreciated, been practicing my stab scratch, and timing, looking for videos, for a righty, my weak hand is the left hand, but, still need to find some righty videos, can't seem to find any myself, they keep pulling up lefties....lol haha. But, any advice would be extremely helpful my man , cool bro, thanks man, Much Love, Mad Respect, and Big Ups homie..... :)
You can do that. Back in the days we had to do it (with real vinyl) because if you didn't the low would create a lot of rumble/noise. With the digital equipment you don't have that problem anymore, but I still take out a bit of low to make sure the scratch isn't overpowering the music.

subscribed, definitely a good tutorial video even for a 100% new dj / turntablist *cheers*
+djTLMtv What is the spinning 120 on your vinyl?
Those are not on his vinyl. Those are called slipmats. They are under the vinyl, so the record can spin easily. :)
yeah I realize that know i didnt know about clear vinyl tho
It's hard being the only DJ out of all my friends I literally have no one to teach me. Thank you man this helps ALOT!!
You all prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow forgot my login password. I love any tricks you can give me

Hi DjTLM ! Do we have to turn down the LOW on our scratch sample? Very well explained tutorial. THUMBS UP!
You can do that. Back in the days we had to do it (with real vinyl) because if you didn't the low would create a lot of rumble/noise. With the digital equipment you don't have that problem anymore, but I still take out a bit of low to make sure the scratch isn't overpowering the music.
When you do a overhead shot of your turntables can you turn the image upside down in your editing program so that we see it from your perspective?
Yes, I can do that. I've heard this comment a couple of times now and I will try it out with the next Scratch tutorial for sure!
