In your scratch course, do you evaluate student videos?
AN important thing you need to tell people is the curve setting may not be on their hardware but in their software
I appreciate how you described the Curve dial and Left to Right / Right to Left examples
No doubt! Definitely one of the most important things to understand before you begin scratching!
Yeah i have never seen anyone else point that out!! Great thzt he included that detail and didnt over look it. Im uding the xdj rx2 and it helped with the curve
This is the best tutorial imo on scratching using the fader. I'm at work, so I don't have a turntable infront of me. I'm literally practicing the movements, so when I go home, I'll have the technique drilled in my head.
🙏🏾🙏🏾 appreciate that man! I literally do the same thing to this day! It’s all in the muscle memory.
@@DJLiftOFF you and DJ Angelo are great teachers
Really appreciate that!! It’s crazy you say that because I literally learned to scratch from DJ Angelo. Awesome teacher!
@@DJLiftOFF I wish I found his videos in 2008. Back then, good tutorials on ANY subject were hard to find, then you just give up. Oh well, it's never too late.
@@DiscoMatty79 Same man. I was late to his videos too. And it's crazy that they're 10 years old (or older I think) and can still be used today.
But yessir. Never too late!
Man I’ve been DJing for 20+years and one thing I’ve always wanted to learn but never took the time to was learn how to scratch. You break it down and make it easy to understand the platter/fader movement. Definitely gonna start my daily practicing
Thank you 🙏🏾 appreciate the comment and glad I could help 💯
Hey and now do you scratch ?
I've watched so many videos and yours is the first that made sense and was very clear on what to practice first to get better. Also helped a lot because I went out and got the rane 12 and 72 set up like you have because I wanted the vinyl and controller feel so thank you
You’re every welcome man. Glad I could help! 🙏🏾
And yeah, the Rane set up is undefeated in my opinion. Love it!
@@DJLiftOFF Exactly what i was gonna say - Real DJ who talks Real Straight forward talk so you can actully learn - Thx Liftoff , you and Qbert are the only people i can watch ..... Just skills and no BS ... ;)
This was an amazing tutorial. Thank you
Seriously agreed!!!
Been wanting to start scratching for a while, most tutorials I've viewed haven't explained things in a way that clicked with me. Your vids are simple and straight to the point. Subscribed and will be watching for more vids. Many thanks!
Man, comments like this really help me keep pushing forward. Really glad you're finding the videos helpful. Thank you for watching! You're more than welcome. Many more vids to come!
You sir are very good at instructions and breaking down each individual step in what your lesson is. You should go back a few steps and do lessons in song structure, counting, BEAT MATCHING, to go in to the steps of scratching!!! Your gift of breaking down step slowly and up close is GREAT
Thank you sir!!
Transition series coming up soon 💯 starting from square one with exactly what you’ve mentioned. Beats, bars, phrases, counting, etc!
The thumb and middle finger method for the fader 🔥🔥🔥 opened up a lot for me
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 it’s the simple things sometimes. Glad that helped!
The only tutorial on UA-cam that's actually useful - thanks dude, subscribed!
Really appreciate that man 🙏🏾 - thanks for the sub!
This helps more than other videos from other people. Thank you!
Love to hear it. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾
You are the Man, thanks for this simple but yet informative tutorial.

This video truly help me out . I got alot ok f practicing to do. Thank so much.
Glad I could help out 🙏🏾 - I’m still practicing to this day! You’re welcome!
You definitely broke it down I still have my old school Numark NS7fx. My next controller is definitely the Rane one.Rev7 is kool but it’s the Rane one for me. The cross fader is like butter.
Just subscribed!!
I wish I had your tutorials at the start of my scratch journey!!
Nice work 👏!!!!
I used to watch endless videos of mix master Mike , Qbert , Roc Raida, JMJ, and terminator X .
So I was in good hands... but it was hard to see and understand the methods.
REST IN BEATS.
JMJ & ROC RAIDA .
HIP HOP GODS!!!
Appreciate the sub man, honestly 🙏🏾🙏🏾. Personally love Qbert, a crazy talent! Opened up for mix master mike in college one time and he literally was scratching the hell out of some techno/edm tracks. Craziest in person routine I’ve seen to this day.
S/O to everyone you named 🙏🏾🤞🏾

Great content, I'm an intermediate Dj and recently purchased the Pioneer DDJ REV 7. Coming from an American audio Encore 2000. It's a world of difference and alot to learn on that board but i see your mixer in the videos is basically whats built in the Rev. Looking forward to learning alot from these tutorials your giving. Thanks
WOW, I learned more in this 1 video, than I did in the last 10 videos I watched! 👍🏾
Love to hear that!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
This vid is essential on UA-cam. You are much appreciated and great things coming 💯
Thank you bro!! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Awesome video bro! Just bought the Rane One and have been using your videos to learn 💪🏾
Appreciate you bro! Love to hear it, keep grinding 💪🏾
Most of my events are weddings & parties where all I do is mix songs together, but I'm thinking of getting the Rane One to add that extra scratching flavor to my mixes. Glad I watched your video tutorial. You broke it down perfectly & will use your tips to better my skills. Appreciate you brotha! New Subscriber here. 🎧👍
Thanks for subscribing man!! Glad you enjoyed, and you’re more than welcome! Rane One is definitely a good grab 💪🏾
Thanks mate, been mixing since 93(house music)been trying to scratch all that time, have got some knowledge and can do a bit but this really helped, cheers bruv, from the UK
🙏🏾🙏🏾 glad I could help!
That's dope I still yet to learn how to control my movements with both my hands to have them in sync like that. It seems when I try to churp scratch I loose the movement of my fader hand. Great demo I definitely am gonna try it the way you showed it. Thamks
🙏🏾🙏🏾
Yo...you are the best at explaining exactly what you're doing with your hands and this is so helpful...
🙏🏾🙏🏾 I learned the fundamentals from UA-cam, and but never had the true, “step-by-step” experience. So hearing that keeps me going. Thank you!
you good dude.. i'll kickin what you teach

🙏🏾🙏🏾 thanks for watching!
Best tutorial on this EVER! Great job and thanks!
🙌🏾🙌🏾 thanks Donny. Much appreciated!
Nice vid.
A big key to scratching is small fader movements. The less you travel on the fader, the quicker and cleaner the cut will sound. Also, using short sounds makes the cut sharper/ cleaner.
💯💯💯
Very helpful! Especially for this blind DJ
Glad you found it helpful!!
Really enjoyed this ..Simple to follow well explained. Keep it going 👍
Thanks for watching 🙏🏾 - really glad it was easy to follow!
You make it look easy. I just bought the Rane one, I have to put in the time to practice everyday

Hey dude, thanks for the video! Knowing you arenlt a lawyer, is it your understanding the scratch bank you used for this is royalty free? I've learned enough I'm considering doing some session work and am still trying to figure out sample clearance, especially as it pertains to common scratching sounds and scratch banks. Regardless, thanks for the lesson that finally got things to click. Cheers.
Dope vid
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Thanks my g ..keep up the content
You're welcome G! Yessir.
on controllers you can also let go cause even though the cogwheel doesn't rotate the track is still going as if
Exactly! I remember tried to “envision” it moving as I attempted to learn to scratch with a controller but it never clicked like it did with a moving platter.
But now going back to controllers, it’s a piece of cake.
Those who learn on controllers always impress me!
Hello Dj Liftoff, just wondering. How is the sound coming out of your mixer? I don't see any XLR cables or nor Quarter inch jacks connected.
Hey. When I record, I only listen through my headphones. So my headphones are directly connected to the mixer, and I record my screen and audio via Quicktime Player!
It all makes sense now, thank you so much.
@@aguotaguot6657 🙏🏾
Can you do a listen on the back scratch?
Lol why does no other video mention the curve setting??? Thanks a lot!
Ahaha, extremely important 💯💯 You're welcome!
Good stuff
Appreciate it G
Get to I get it and like the information
Thanks for sharing this. I've been working on chirps and transformer scratches a lot lately. Starting off slow in the beginning definitely helps. Did you start off practicing with both hands on the record or you started with your dominant hand first and then started using your other hand?
You're welcome! The chirp/transformer techniques are both essential in the scratch game, and I agree that starting off slowly is definitely the way to go.
Honestly, I started off with what was much easier, which was practicing the chirp scratch with my right hand on the record. I did that for a LONG time before finally deciding to practice using my left. I wish I'd of started practicing with both at the beginning because it took a while for my left hand to catch up to speed.
Serato 3.0...need a review fam
Excellent!
🙏🏾 appreciate you!
Great tutorial bro 👍
🙏🏾 appreciate it!
I really want to learn scratching cause I have a buddy of mine he is 16 yrs old and he's a beast, but I dont have hours and hours of free time to practice. My question is do you have to have some kind of gift to become good at scratching or will you actually get better with practice? its really discouraging when you are 45 yrs old and you got a dj buddy thats is 16 and sounds like Scratch Bastid🙄🤦♂️. Your video was great thank you.
I hear your pain man, I REALLY do. But I can say with all honesty that I particular started getting good at scratching VERY gradually. It happened so gradually that it was almost as if I got it overnight. Very weird.
But I don’t believe you have to have a gift. I think some learn faster than others, but if you put in at least 30min every single day - and you’re practicing the right way. I promise you’ll get it over time.
@@DJLiftOFF Thank you for positive feed back I need to get the mancave done and all my equipment set back up and its on brutha, practice practice, stay up my friend✌️💯
No doubt man! Hope you can get it set up sooner than later! Appreciate you, you too 🙏🏾
Thank you for this!
You got it!
Just picked up the Rane one any advice for a beginner dj.
Great video !
Appreciate it!
I just recently biut the pioneer s11 and the rane 12s mk2 but been having some syc issues i connected the ranes to using USB to the mixer i plugged them in where it says cdjs USB input
Where do u scatch on the song? Like on a vocal part or beat?
THANKS IN ADAVANCE WHATS THE NAME OF THAT TRACK., AND WHAT S THE CUE POINT.?
great tutorial! what do you think of the raneone?
Appreciate you 🙏🏾 - I haven’t used the rane one yet, but it looks pretty cool to me. I haven’t heard anyone say “terrible” things about it, but I definitely want to test it out before I give an opinion.
However, I plan to get one soon to test it out and I have a feeling I’m going to like it.
If you move the crossfader completely to the right, would the scratch sound be louder instead if you just move it to the middle?
If you set up the crossfader with the curve all the way to the right, the volume will be the same (at max volume) no matter where the crossfader is (unless it’s all the way over in which case one deck is muted)
Great video bro, just earned a new sub ✊🏿
Much appreciated 🙏🏾
Was wondering what sound you use to scratch with. Is it the "ahh"? I only just learned that it's better to scratch with these sounds, might be good to include that info in a future video.
@@feature25 Yup, it's the "ahh" sound which is that first sound from the serato scratch sentence. And you're 100 right, thanks. I definitely need to start mentioning that because it's actually extremely helpful to practice with that particular sound, especially when first starting off.
My tap doesn't seem to work like that. Dunno if my thumb is too stiff if I'm expecting something unrealistic?
I tap hard but I thumb just sits there. Or is the wrist allowed/supposed to get involved too?
It definitely takes some getting used too. Your thumb may be too stiff! You should always try to be as loose as possible. With bigger movements, your wrist will definitely get involved!
Hey what's up I've been mixing for about a year now bedroom DJ. I've been wanting to learn to scratch my question is what beat do you use to scratch with. What's the transformer and chirp sorry if that's a dumb question.
Yoo! I forgot to mention this in the actual video, but in the video description, there's a link to download the exact same audio I'm using in the video from dropbox.
Not a dumb question at all. The chirp and transformer scratch both just refer to techniques/types of scratches that I went over in the video.
Love the tutorial but what if you don't have curve on your controller.
Great point! What software do you use? You can change the curve settings in your software.
I use serato with a numark platinum fx controller. I'm going to still use this tutorial to practice my scratches today. Thanks for this video it really helps.
Bet. If you click the settings icon in the top right of serato. You can set your curve up. I’m not near a computer so I can’t give you a step by step but someone has definitely showed how to do so online.
I would search “how to set up curve on serato software”
Thanks LiftOFF I appreciate you taking time out to reply. If you get a chance I have about 30 mixsets on mixcloud mostly house but I have edm classic hip hop and RNB mixes also that you can check out. I want to incorporate more scratching in my sets. Thanks again and stay safe out here.
Btw I go by Dev Best
how do you get such good sound in this video? I see there are no outputs plugged in.
Recording directly through the S9 in QuickTime player, and recording the screen as well!
@@DJLiftOFF cool thanks I have the s11 I'm gonna have to try that Thanks again
Do you have a video showing how you can do the 2 click flair orbit double time. So difficult to do
Just dropped a 2 click flare tutorial. Didn’t necessarily show how to do it very quickly in double time, but it is essentially just practicing until you’re able to move your hand on the cross fader and place fast enough and in sync.
Definitely challenging.
Are most ran mixer's curve set already?? Would someone need to set it with an old Gemini mixer as well
I think it just comes set at 12 o’clock if I’m not mistaken, but yeah more often than not it needs to changed!
@DJ LiftOFF I"m thinking if I were You🥴🥴🥴
7:27 so that's how he did it search "DJ magic mike This D.J. Cuts Different Ways"
Thanks
You’re welcome! Thanks for watching!
Alright man we gotta talk. If your teaching people you should be clean and consistent with your scratches. I've watched a lot of your videos. Your very sloppy. Your techniques for some of your scratches are incorrect. If you really want to learn proper scratching I would be happy to show you.
This was my very first tutorial, so no, it’s not perfect. Thanks for watching tho 👌🏾
Yeah, please create tutorials for all the scratch techniques I did incorrect and I’ll gladly watch them.
When it comes to scratching , is it harder to learn on a controller vs a motorized turn table ?
Personally, I think it’s harder to learn on a controller because the motorized platter just gives you more of an authentic feel for scratching!
Thank you for this tutorial! I just recently purchased two Reloop MK2 7000's and a Pioneer DJ DJM 250 mixer and I'm using Rekordbox software. Any advice on learning to scratch using this software would be greatly appreciated .
You’re more than welcome. Thanks for watching 🙏🏾 - I haven’t used Rekordbox yet, but I plan to sooner than later so I can do a comparison between that and Serato!
How much all the equipment cost? Where can i get the equip? Church scratches
I get a lot of my equipment from idjnow.com
I use the rane twelves, and a djms9 mixer
The mixer is around $1599, I believe now. And the Rane twelves are $700-$800.
youtube cut most of the scratch sound out but otherwise it seems to be a great video
Yooo.. this is 🔥. I'm an absolute beginner and this is helpful. not to sound stupid but do you scratch on a high hat, kick drum or at the drop of a beat to get the chirping sound? 🤦🏾♂️🤷🏽♂️
Appreciate you for watching, and glad it’s helpful 🙏🏾!
No, that’s a great question. If you check the description, I forgot to mention there’s a download link there that includes the same sample/audio I’m using in the tutorial!
The sound I’m using is the very first sound you’ll hear (in the serato scratch sentence that you’ll download).
How did you run the 12's to the s9
I have the S9 and both 12s connected to a USB hub!
