you missed something very important about why Nintendo DS and DSi were such a success. In poor countries or countries where we couldn't buy or afford buying game cartridges, sellers were offering homebrew cartridges with SD cards where you can download and play roms. this made the sales explode in countries where nintendo traditionally has no presence
and what's correct then @@MilkShakeMastr ? i'm talking about countries where nintendo never sold products, like in africa. even if you want to buy games legally there was no way. unless someone brings them from abroad. so having the homebrew cartridge made the console very popular.
I bought a DS for my dad for his birthday, my mom said she wanted one for Christmas the same year. They were smokers at the time and you could always find them sitting on their porch each playing their DS. They were both in their late fifties. They started with rain teasers and bundle games with sudoku and puzzles and moved on to Mario Kart and Zelda. My mom has replayed Ocarina of Time several times😂

This is a really good collection, but before the Game Boy Color there was also the Game Boy Pocket. This was a slimmed down version of the first Game Boy that required fewer batteries. There was also the Game Boy Light, which is essentially the Game Boy Pocket that had a backlit display and only released in Japan. Game Boy Micro was an interesting release and you can consider it the Game Boy Advance slim.
Also the whole exchangeable games for one console stuff was already desinged by Milton Bradleys Microvision in 1980 or so. I really missed the Game Boy light in this development since having a lit up screen is now such a common thing.
Also there are two GBA sp's. The first version, the ags 001, had a frontlit screen while the revision, the 101, had a proper backlit screen. In the video, he said that the sp was now backlit but showed the 001, which has washed out colors due to the frontlight. Would have been nice to show how beautiful the 101 screen is :))

He also missed out the Gameboy Light. Although Japan only it should be listed in this lineup. Oh and the 2DS and 2DS XL, although the XL is similar to the 3DS XL, the smaller 2DS is a very different console.
Not entirely true: the most common and most sold one is the 001, with a front-lit screen. The AGS-101 (backlit, much nicer screen) sold in smaller numbers and went on sale when the DS was already on the market. AGS-101's are much more expensive on the second hand market, because they are much harder to find. The difference is HUGE though and I think it's worth it. I am a child of the very early 80s, and that original gameboy was my first handheld device. This video brought back so many memories as I haven't seen that thing in decades. Arun, my brothers and I were big into gaming, and there were some high end, expensive systems that were released in Japan around the same time that were significantly better than what we had in the U.S. My family bought them at a specialty gaming store in the late 80s or early 90s. One was Turbo Graphics 16 (or something like that). It had these really small cards that acted as the games, and this was when we had those large Nintendo and Sega Genesis cartridges (though the Sega's were a bit smaller as far as I remember. The graphics on that Turbo Graphics 16 was revolutionary. Also, the best handheld of all time was released around the same time, the Turbo Express, which was about the size of a gameboy but played the full fat turbo graphics 16 games. And it was color! It was amazing. Lastly, and the best system IMO ever released for its era, was the Neo Geo. It had these massive cartridges, but the graphics were like nothing that would be seen for years after. It felt like you were playing arcade games in your home, which was amazing at the time. Not sure if these things will ever make their way into a video, but trust me as someone who grew up at that time, they really changed the entire landscape of home gaming.
@@Use_Code_Pear-Luffy and? His “SA” was very informative and if you grew up in the same era you would understand how everything he said is 100% factual information
What's incredible to me is how I often would end up getting a new handheld system roughly every time I got a new Pokemon game. First the Gameboy with Pokemon Red, then the Gameboy Color with Pokemon Silver. My cousins got the GBA and then a year later got the SP so I got their old GBA and grabbed Pokemon Sapphire and Pokemon Firered. Then I got my DS Lite and with that came Pokemon Pearl, Pokemon SoulSilver and Pokemon White. My DS Lite was my go to for years and only briefly did I get a New 3DS XL (for Pokemon X of course) before finally getting the Switch for Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet and Arceus. The evolution of Nintendo handhelds was in many ways assisted by the Pokemon franchise.
There was actually one handheld you missed, the Gameboy Micro, not many people knew about it cause it didn't sell well, but it was basically a tiny version of the Gameboy Advance without the backwards compatibility
@Monzell Well, to be fair, calling the virtual boy a hand held would be like calling a coach a chair with wheels. They're both portable, but one is definitely not as portable as the other.
Great video as always. I definitely enjoyed the stroll down memory lane. One console that was notably absent was the 2DSXL which was (as far as I recall) released after the 3DS and was approximately the same hardware but without the 3-D effect on the upper screen.
Seeing how far games have come really crazy, coming from just a small time passer, to a device u can sit down and play with the family is amazing, I love these videos
I actually loved the Nintendo 2DS. I bought it during my apprenticeship when I didn't had the budget for a 3DS. I could play all of my old DS games but also enjoy newer games. I had around 2.5 hours daily commute and it made many long train rides enjoyable.
I also have a 2DS (Pokemon Sapphire edition) and I love it. So comfortable to hold along with the stylus. Haven't experienced holding any 3DS model but I did get to experience playing with my neighbor's 2DSXL. The design was nice but it felt flimsy and the stylus was too short for my liking.
my brother got a game boy advance sp for christmas and i liked it alot and used to play super mario world advance on it but when he grew up he gave it to me and i still have it and it still works and i still play super mario world advanve on it
@10:00 you forget to mention the major element that led to DS being touch.. they were competing with the PALM pilot, and with the blackberry cellphones... iphones were the genereation AFTER that, way later. Like 7 years later.
Amazing video as always but I'm afraid you forgot or didn't mention the "New 2DS XL". The last 3DS revision that Nintendo released, which is exactly what the name implies. The (slightly) improved hardware of the New 3DS, a bigger form factor and an all around really slick design, just without 3D.
I hated the New 2DS XL. Worst screens since they lacked contrast, worst speaker placement, worst design, least ergonomic, and worst battery life, since it had the specs of the New 3DS, but the battery of the original 3DS. No that is not figurative, that is literal. The original 3DS, and both 2DS models used the CTR-003 battery.

I love the way you look at the evolution of these. It would have never crossed my mind to think: the GBA has so many more colours than the GBC. But it is kinda mind blowing, indeed!
A memory that really sticks with me is when we did dance competitions when I was about 12/13 and so many people had a Nintendo DS, and we would Pictochat with a whole bunch of strangers across this huge hall. We had so much fun chatting and being silly.
Makes me remember the many manuals and pamphlets from my first Gameboy color. I read them all. Was so stocked and all excited. Pokemon silver was my first game and i did my best to understand the game at my age. All I could understand is the anime was my guide lmao. Battle all the gym leaders.
Hey Arun, I'm here to correct you a little: The GBA SP had two versions. The one you showed is actually the frontlit AGS-001 model. Big N released a little later the AGS-101 model which was actually Backlit and was brighter than the model before (and I think it had a better speaker and more battery time but I'm not sure rn)
It's awesome how he's got a entire room full of phones, I hope he does a similar thing with all the consoles and handhelds that hes brought for all these videos. It would look amazing to have them with the correct lighting in the background blue for sony and red for nintendo all presented in the way he makes the thumbnails.
The 3DS and its variations had a lot of flaws and gimmicks that didn't really stick, but I have countless fond memories with that little system from when I was a kid. Considering I had the 3DS and the N64 growing up, I consider my Nintendo experience growing up to be very good.
I only ever got the n64, the Wii, the gbasp, and the original ds. I always wanted the other ds models and then the 3ds when that came out so bad, but we were always so poor, I'd be lucky if I could even get a new game. (I just found out about the "new 3ds XL" today and I definitely have to get it now)
My Nintendo childhood started with the Wii but more importantly the 2ds. It does kinda look gross and clunky, but it introduced me to pokemon, 3d Mario, animal Crossing, Kirby and donkey Kong. It still holds a special place in my heart.
Amazing video. We all love Nintendo... Hehe. Also, a great video! It's pretty entertaining to see the old stuff since I wasn't around when some of those were out 🤣 You boost the entertainment too because you explain it very good 👍😊 Good job Arun!
2 errors he made : nintendo used the Palm Pilot stylus popularity for the DS, they didn't invent it. And SEGA Game Gear was a tough competitor to the game boy, before the game boy color came and finally outclassed the Sega Game Gear... the omission of the game gear in this video is the biggest flaw honestly. Even though not mentionning Palm Pilot as who made the tactile stylus gigantic before nintendo scooped it up is also a major flaw. 8/10 overall video on first watch
When you mentioned the admiration of the gb color in the store shelves, it hit me hard. I miss that feeling when ads showed the newest consoles and just looking at them in the glass case just imagining the fun you’d have once you got it.
I will say that he skipped over a couple of consoles that made the next generation console possible, but they were quick gimmicks, so it's fine. For instance, the Gameboy Pocket helped them arrange the components in a smaller case, to create the Gameboy Color. And the Gameboy Light was the first test of internal lighting, which would lend to the backlight of the Gameboy Advance SP.
8:05 zelda and the minish cap... my favorite game, i played that when i was 8 years old in a trip... bring sooo much memory the game is kinda hard but its so simple and high quality for that year
Didn't know the original Game and Watch did so well. I used to read about it in the Nintendo Power magazines when I was a kid but didn't know much about it. The handheld market really held Nintendo down through the dark days of the 64 and gamecube and is propelling them forward with the Switch.
I've owned most of these since the original gameboy and honestly the biggest revolution for me was the gameboy advance sp that came with a backlit screen, no longer having to struggle with the weird little lamp you plug into the top of the gameboy and angle over the screen to stay up late and play in the dark after school 😅 (also easier to fold and hide so you can pretend to be asleep!) And these things were built to last, my old gameoy advannce sp still works perfectly today (with that tribal tattoo print of course, because that's what all the cool kids wanted)
You've come such a long way, I remember enjoying your old 3ds and psvita videos because handhelds were all you could get your hands on at the time and now you have all of them in one video!
Great video. I think you missed a couple. Like the Gameboy Pocket, the GBA Micro, and the New 2DS XL. They each had their own reasons for being notable but I can also understand why they might be easy to overlook. But beyond that it was a great video on the history and timeline of the big N's handhelds. Got my sub for it. Imma go watch your backlog as well. Keep it up.

Oh trust me. It was. Pokemon was the reason to own a gameboy. Not Mario or Zelda. Pokemon. 100%
12:15 i have my old dsi now for 8 years almost and its still fine
When 3DS launched, it also was the peak of 3D smartphones and TVs, I remember my friends having a Motorola or Samsung with the 3D camera as well.
There was actually one handheld you missed, the Gameboy Micro, not many people knew about it cause it didn't sell well, but it was basically a tiny version of the Gameboy Advance without the backwards compatibility
& the New 2DS XL
anddddd the gameboy pocket, which released between the 1989 and the colour.
I had one really liked it. Missing a small but good gaming console in nintendos daily range, wish for a tiny switch version ....
He also forgot the gameboy light!
@Monzell Well, to be fair, calling the virtual boy a hand held would be like calling a coach a chair with wheels. They're both portable, but one is definitely not as portable as the other.
Great video as always. I definitely enjoyed the stroll down memory lane. One console that was notably absent was the 2DSXL which was (as far as I recall) released after the 3DS and was approximately the same hardware but without the 3-D effect on the upper screen.
he also missed the gameboy micro
And the gameboy pocket
Agreed, it was a seriously premium feeling finale to the 3ds line
And the gameboy light
And the new 3ds xl
This is the best tech youtuber EVER!!
I had around 2.5 hours daily commute and it made many long train rides enjoyable.
he didn't even mention how comfortable the 2ds is compared to the new 3ds xl, I always wanted a 2ds just because it feels so much better in my hands
@@jackbro655 bruh all he said for the 2ds was that it was ugly 😭
2DS is better than the 3DS
The 3D effect on the N3DS was amaazing! by the way you forgot about the Gameboy Micro
So glad someone commented on this! I had this growing up, and in every video I watch on this topic, the Micro is forgotten about!!!

@10:00 you forget to mention the major element that led to DS being touch.. they were competing with the PALM pilot,
and with the blackberry cellphones... iphones were the genereation AFTER that, way later. Like 7 years later.
This video is utter brilliance. The content, production value, presentation, pacing and passion are all of the very highest level. Pure quality.
Nintendo 3ds is still one of my favorite consoles of all time, I still play on it
Amazing video as always but I'm afraid you forgot or didn't mention the "New 2DS XL". The last 3DS revision that Nintendo released, which is exactly what the name implies. The (slightly) improved hardware of the New 3DS, a bigger form factor and an all around really slick design, just without 3D.
Or the Gameboy micro and Gameboy pocket
Yess that is what I said, too 😅
I hated the New 2DS XL.
He also missed gameboy pocket, gameboy light, and gameboy micro
@@VeeOasisor Game Boy Light which was a revision of the original Game Boy with a backlit screen. Japan exclusive but still existed.

What really sets these videos apart is the amount of time and polish that goes into each step in the process. From writing to pacing, filming to lighting editing to graphics, it’s just amazing this guys team can pump videos of such high caliber on a regular schedule. Bravo. 🎉😊
I love the way you look at the evolution of these. It would have never crossed my mind to think: the GBA has so many more colours than the GBC. But it is kinda mind blowing, indeed!
14:02 - Thank you so much Arun for using my footage in your video! I was ecstatic when I saw my name there in the corner!
The Game Boy Advanced is probably the inspireration for the NINTENDO SWITCH!!
This is incredible. It’s so awesome to see you go through all these handhelds. Plus, you now have thousands of new games to enjoy too!
The Nintendo Ds family, and switch are my favorites!

19:07 I CAN FEEL THE NOSTALGIA
This was my first introduction to Nintendo :D
Same :)
Same I had this pokemon sun and moon special edition were it had pokemon sun and moon pre installed and cool engravings on the ds
Mine was the first Nintendo DS😊
I was introduced to Nintendo with the Wii and DSi
A memory that really sticks with me is when we did dance competitions when I was about 12/13 and so many people had a Nintendo DS, and we would Pictochat with a whole bunch of strangers across this huge hall. We had so much fun chatting and being silly.
Makes me remember the many manuals and pamphlets from my first Gameboy color. I read them all. Was so stocked and all excited.
Pokemon silver was my first game and i did my best to understand the game at my age. All I could understand is the anime was my guide lmao. Battle all the gym leaders.
Hey Arun, I'm here to correct you a little:
The GBA SP had two versions. The one you showed is actually the frontlit AGS-001 model.
Big N released a little later the AGS-101 model which was actually Backlit and was brighter than the model before (and I think it had a better speaker and more battery time but I'm not sure rn)
Dont forget the gameboy light and officialy the virtual boy because it is officially related to the gameboy
@@WAFFLESUNIVERSE I don't think the virtual boy is handheld

I thought it was the metallic models that were backlit, and the matte plastic models later were frontlit. Could be wrong though.
8:46 It had a front lit display, not backlit. Only a some rare "brighter screen" models were back lit. Also known as the AGS101
It's awesome how he's got a entire room full of phones, I hope he does a similar thing with all the consoles and handhelds that hes brought for all these videos. It would look amazing to have them with the correct lighting in the background blue for sony and red for nintendo all presented in the way he makes the thumbnails.
I'd pay to be able to visit his collection and try out all the various phones, consoles and gadgets...
RIP gameboy pocket, gameboy light, 3ds xl, and new 3ds xl
And 2ds xl
@@pogethedogei still have my 2ds and play w it it's so good!!!

Also, a great video! It's pretty entertaining to see the old stuff since I wasn't around when some of those were out 🤣 You boost the entertainment too because you explain it very good 👍😊 Good job Arun!
bro the video was released like 5 minutes ago how can you watch the whole thing even on 3x it would be impossible

You forgot to mention that the DS Lite had a far more durable hinge than the first DS 13:44
Didn't help negligent young teenage me though, the hinge on my DS lite fell apart in about the timeframe he described 😅

I've been subbed for a really long time, and it's wonderful to see you and your team come so far! Keep it up, Arun :)
He also skipped over the virtual boy

4:38 game boy color was also my 1st gaming console. Missing those days 💔
Didn't know the original Game and Watch did so well. I used to read about it in the Nintendo Power magazines when I was a kid but didn't know much about it. The handheld market really held Nintendo down through the dark days of the 64 and gamecube and is propelling them forward with the Switch.
You missed the Game boy micro from 2005
7:06 thats what she said
I've owned most of these since the original gameboy and honestly the biggest revolution for me was the gameboy advance sp that came with a backlit screen, no longer having to struggle with the weird little lamp you plug into the top of the gameboy and angle over the screen to stay up late and play in the dark after school 😅 (also easier to fold and hide so you can pretend to be asleep!)
And these things were built to last, my old gameoy advannce sp still works perfectly today (with that tribal tattoo print of course, because that's what all the cool kids wanted)
1:18 I see what you did there 😂
i love how he is able to make every next console seem like amazing modern technology
You've come such a long way, I remember enjoying your old 3ds and psvita videos because handhelds were all you could get your hands on at the time and now you have all of them in one video!
His decade of journey since high school until now diamond play button is just amazing
5:12 when they released pokemon gold/silver/crystal in 2000, I was impressed with day and night time in-game as it synchronize with our real time.
Keep it up.
