Here's what I learned commuting by train/bus in Chicago 40 years ago and since.
*Knee-high boots under dress wool pants look professional and keep the wind from killing your legs. Leaves you with a nice silhouette.
*A trainman taught me to buy wool felt (hardware store type, not thin craft felt) and add as a base in boots.
    *Wool blend socks.
*Under your chunky sweater two layers really help. Even a long-sleeve cotton tee over your base helps.
*Base layer under leather gloves (found them in a ski shop decades ago - may be easier to find now)
*Fleece lined tights or leggings. Can find them at discounters for about $5. Buy 2 pr to rotate.
Love your tips Alyssa. Great holidays/year to you!

You know, I´m 32 years old, and I had not the slightest clue how to dress in almost all of them, despite the fact I am a woman and the most part of our society expects that art to be a part of our feminin DNA. And since I stumbled over your channel I leran so much about my self, what I like, what I like to be, that I never realized before. And again I am so thankfull for all the things you share with the world and hope you will continue this for a really long time and wish you a verry merry christmas and a happy new year and so much luck for all that is still to come . . .

I've had such a similar experience. I started looking into fashion around age 30 and it took me until 32 to really figure out what I liked. It's amazing how fashion can make you feel more like yourself.

These are wonderful tips. I can`t believe I have lived my whole life in Scandinavia and have only just recently learned about layering and how to dress to keep warm without wearing a Canada Goose coat. I found a thinner turtle neck sweater second hand and bought it to layer under other things and have been amazed how much it actually helps in keeping me warm! I could wear my leather jacket with the turtle neck and a knit under which I never thought I could wear this time of the year.

One little trick I learned this winter is to wear a thin pair of gloves under thicker mittens. That way if you need to take your mitt off to text, push a button, etc. You still have a bit of protection from the cold until you can stuff your hand back into your mitt.

Another OUTSTANDING video on looking cute when it’s so cold your eyes freeze. I live in upstate NY and it’s winter 8 months of the year so the. I’ll of my clothes shoes and accessories are for bitter cold, snow and wet…and not the ski slopes! Thank you for this help in choosing winter pieces and how to style them together. Will always appreciate when you do these!

This is really helpful. I'm a walking fashion crime any time of the year but always feel extra frumpy in the winter because comfort is more important to me than fashion. Definitely keeping these tips in mind so I can be warm and cozy without looking like I was dressed by a mountain man in the wild west.

Hi, thanks so much for the Icebreaker tip. I live in New Zealand, and it's Winter at the moment and i was looking at videos on how to stay warm. as soon as I had read the reviews for that top, I went and bought 2. They really are a game changer. As well as being extremely comfortable, they keep me warm, and streamline my whole look. At the time I was thinking I might have to buy a cashmere cardigan. The Icebreaker Oasis 100%merino scoop neck does the same job at a fraction of the price. And I got discount. Thanks again Alyssa. Love your channel. Jinine

Amen to that! Anyone showing their ankles in 90% of Canada (except maybe Vancouver Island ...and even then.... ify) - are doing it for a photo and then running back indoors. Buddled is best. Flash all that skin indoors! Love your advice! HNY from Alberta.

Neoprene cycling gloves under more stylish ones if you have Raynauds syndrome. I use neoprene under sheepskin if it’s super cold. Neoprene lined wellies (when it’s a welly occasion I guess) Keep back of neck and lower back warm at all times. I also use a lot of icebreaker. It’s all got holes in now but still does the job. I use a short sleeved over a long sleeved top. A friend of mine who wears dresses every single day has found a merino wool actual dress that she wears as a base layer. It always looks as if she’s wearing spring dresses but she’s never cold. Amazing.

Funny about the exposed ankles haha! I think it definitely depends where you live. They must live in a warmer climate. Here in Virginia on the daily we don’t need to layer under jeans, wear gloves, or hats just to go from one place to the next. It stays around 20-40 degrees F though with the occasional 0 degree weather. I only do that if playing in the snow. My typical winter outfit is wool socks, boots or clogs, jeans, a cotton long sleeve under a sweater and a wool coat.

I’m glad you mentioned the craziness of exposed ankles and sock less shoes during the winter. I don’t even live in a “cold” climate like you do, but I my feet get really cold anyway, even if it’s 52 degrees. Some of the things people do for fashion are just ridiculous. Thanks for your sensible and yet fashionable approach to staying warm and protected in the cold.

As funny as 3 layers may sound to some people, Ottawa and Montreal (not to mention all northern areas) get really cold even compared to southwestern Ontario. We nearly froze our butts off a few years ago when spending New Year’s Eve in Ottawa. It was beautiful, but OMG cold.
As usual, great video. Have a great Christmas!

haha thanks for the validation Silvia! I worried that some people would find all the layers overkill but that is literally all I wear from December - April. How fun that you spent NYE in Ottawa! So glad you enjoyed it! Merry Christmas to you as well! xx

3 layers, I wished! I used to live in South Dakota. In the dead of winter, I'd have 5 layers, on top.

Sin Nombre middle of Sweden here 4 layers standard, up North also 4 layers but better !!! And double handwear first gloves and then wollen mitts on top, double socks and a knit cap and buff is mandatory really as well as Big boots and wollen scarves! And serious long coats !

I knit ribbed cuffs to keep my wrists warm. They make a big difference, are easy to take off, stow away or put back on and can match any part of your outfit......or not. They can be doubled or not. I can take a glove off and still keep my hands fairly warm. I often wear them with matching gloves.

This was fun! Thank you! I live on the other coast (BC) so it's never super cold, though it can be very icy cold and windy, but I can never wear more than a base layer and one thin sweater (then scarf and coat, boots,) because once I come in from the outside, it's way too warm in most places to be wearing anything more! I'm always "dying" in malls and coffee shops or restaurants, and I have to immediately strip most of it off when I go indoors, so maybe this is more East Coast/Iceland etc.? I guess I'm just... hot? (LOL)

Love your tips - scarves really change the look of a neutral colour coat so you can be happy with the style longer . Turtlenecks are my warm basic from September to May most years and lots of choice of warm vests even in the house . I've added a pair of Manitoba Mukluks to my winter boot collection this year - cold feet when outside for long periods can be hard to deal with . No exposed ankles for me !

More people need to know about Manitobah Mukluks! They’re essentially the only boot I see women in Saskatchewan wear in the winter. Absolutely made for our kind of weather and super easy to put on/take off.

Bodysuit is not your friend, when use as a basic layer, when going to the bathroom. lol These tip are very useful and I am aware of most. I just hate the feeling of having a layer under my jeans/pants. I feel phobic. The idea of wearing over the knee boots is a tip, I can't wait to use. This will help me winterize some of my favorite dress/skirts. Thanks for sharing and blessing to you in the days to come. Merry Christmas!
