- Ciao everyone! This week I'm going through the easy steps I use to do a closet declutter or closet purge. How to minimize your closet doesn't have to be overwhelming or as extreme as the Marie Kondo method. I hope these 7 easy steps to declutter and build a closet you love are helpful!

Between your videos and Audrey Coyne , I am curating my best closet pieces and thoughtfully and mindfully buying and decluttering my wardrobe of what suits my style beautifully, if there ever was someone for you to collaborate with it would be her! PS, I’ve told her the same! Love you both!
Aw thank you!! I love Audrey and am also a fan of hers!! Thank you for watching xx
@@AlyssaBeltempo Both you and
Audrey are great to watch. Love
from Switzerland.
@@user-px6ji5sl5b Same, girls!!! I watch both Alyssa and Audrey too. :)
@@allyhvis6046 Great minds think
alike Ally.
I love both of you too. You’re recent discoveries, and really enjoying relaxing with you or Audrey in my living room.
"be kind&compassionate to yourself" this is SO beautiful
I love the idea of a "merchandising your closet" video! I look forward to your videos every Sunday morning. Thank you so much for all of your hard work!
Glad you like the idea! Thank you so much for watching, grateful to be a part of your Sunday morning! xx
Before I came across your channel, getting dressed for any occasion was so stressful. I used get depressed that I had nothing to wear even though I had an excess of clothes. Watching your videos and following your advice has been a freaking wardrobe revolution. Thank you!
The giving yourself grace for the money spent and not worn and asking does this article of clothing go with 3 other outfits is golden! Excellent parameters you brought up
so glad you liked those thoughts:) Thank you for watching xx
Alyssa, it's true that there are many videos about this subject, but I believe yours, is both, sensitive and practical. I don't declater easily, I love my things, so these questions are a great help.☺️
Hi Despina! That means so much thanks for watching and glad you liked this approach! xx
I agree... Doesn't make me feel guilty like others do too lol
Love the risk and honesty to say taylor the list from others advice. Shows you're confident and have integrity...wanting what's really best and most comfortable for us!
Thank you for your brilliant videos. You are so compassionate towards the addiction of buying more clothes! Noeleen from Australia.
Yes, merchandising your closet. Or putting work outfits together in advance so my mornings are more organised, which I personally struggle with because like you Alyssa I live in a cold climate which can change suddenly also. Love you xx
"Why do I have this?" is a question I have added to my overall decluttering method, and I think it helps with clothing as well. If I start to have the same answer over and over for the Maybe pile, like "Because it was a good price for this brand", or "Because I was shopping with a friend and felt like I should buy something", then it might help a little with the decision in that moment, but it will help a lot the next time I go shopping. I won't fall into the trap again, or I will tell myself that I don't have to buy something just because I am shopping. I would love a merchandising video for my closet. My layout is not very helpful.
Alyssa, another helpful video filled with great tips! I spent years falling into the trap of shopping and ended up with a closet full of items and only wearing 20% of it. I've donated and consigned a lot and can still do more. I am now a big fan of only buying clothes that I love, fit my lifestyle, and make me look/feel amazing. Thanks again!
Amazing Nancy! I think we all have fallen into that trap ... love that you've built a curated conscious closet! xx
Timing! I just spent Friday evening and all Saturday morning going through my whole closet! I do this 2-3xa year. I’ll add two suggestions: if your body has changed (as mine has) then removing everything in a section and trying it on is important. That. And. Pieces with major sentimental value :) I just hand washed a sweater my grandmother knit for my aunt over 30years ago. I haven’t worn in it over a decade but the colors are totally back in style. And. My grandma knit it! Thank you for adding the “be kind to yourself”. Something I appreciated hearing.
Wow that's amazing! So true about changing size and sentimental pieces:) Thank you for watchign adn sharing! xx
I also have a sweater knitted by my aunt i believe which is about as old as I am and I love it.
It hasn't been in style all the time - it's a chunky red knit with big puffy sleeves - but i have worn it every winter now and then and almost every time I wear it I get compliments for it.
And then I have another family knitted turtleneck which is too warm/unpractical for everything except long winter walks and I have worn it maybe 5 times in a decade, but I can't let it go. It's too special. I always think, i should rather work on taking more long winter walks than letting this special piece go :D
Alyssa really knows how to break it down!
I am so happy with my closet because I have purchased classic pieces that suit my style and so I have just been shopping my closet. The only things I have added are a camel blazer (which I have been searching for a long time), boots and shoes because I needed them. I have a leopard skirt which I have owned forever and so happy me, I am styling it again and finding fresh ways to wear it. That's the beauty of knowing your style and purchasing quality.
Another fan of you and Audrey,
This was a really nice summary!-
And, ahem, I actually specifically liked your “not so pleasant“ metaphors, I really like your sense of humour. You're bubbly, but in a very mature way, which makes your videos very enjoyable.
Haha glad you liked the metaphors!! Thanks for watching so nice to be included with a UA-camr I also admire!
I agree to all of this! Love from hot winter Germany in August!

This was excellent. When I first began cleaning out my closet, the #1 challenge for me was that I was holding onto just a handful of items for sentimental reasons - two flannel shirts that belonged to my beloved grandfather, for instance, that I had really worn and enjoyed but just didn't suit my style preferences anymore. Took me two additional years to realize my memory of him wearing those shirts is a FOREVER thing, so I was at last able to let go of the shirts. Otherwise, I went through some variation of every question you suggested, and ALL can be helpful depending on the item.
You have totally nailed exactly what I have been doing the past 6 months. I was wearing a lot of very large lagenlook beigy linen clothing, along w. my lifetime fave black, and as I am short and thin I realized I looked dumpy (nothing like vacation photos to bring the truth home!). So I went back to a style that always suited my personality most: Slim clothes, black, denim, navy and white. I have never worn any florals or frills so that is a constant. But selling and donating all the wrong things and buying new has been an adventure. I rely on thrifting but also buy some good quality organic cotton for certain classics that just never show up in thrift or consignment stores. As I'm petite I can wear boy's sizes and they suit my style.
Great tips Alyssa - the ideas for your next videos sound great, particularly seeing your closet as a personal boutique
Wonderful! Thanks for watching Andrea:)
"Especially if you are someone who has a huge closet and have accumulated a lot..." How did you get into my home to see this? 😄❤
Haha thanks for watching Heather xx
Burde sige...i lige måde🤣😂
OMG is this the end of the world!? That statement helped me and cracked me up as well! So true!
I have regretted getting rid of stuff before, and the world still turns! I actually got over it!
Love ya, pretty lady!
I keep a donation bag in the garage on a shelf. I throw clothes, shoes, housewares, decor in it and when it's full it goes to goodwill. It usually takes a few months to fill so It makes paring down so easy for me because I know it's in the bag should I decide I want something back. Over the years, though, I can honestly say I have only pulled a handful of items back out.
Goodwill is fine and I do shop there, but we have a local thrift store w. very low prices that also does direct donations to people in need and to the homeless here, so I stopped donating to Goodwill and take everything there.
Great idea - same I rarely take items out of my maybe pile! Thanks for watching!
I started watching thrifting videos and although it's very cool, I kept thinking I don't need to shop for anything else . My closet is stuffed with a huge amount of pieces and I definitely need to shop from what I already have . I've worked with fashion for 30 years and have a special feeling for some pieces and exclusive prints I have created and selled in my shops and website . I Loved your tips !! I definitely need to review my stuff before throwing myself Inside a shrifting store during an anxious attack lol 😂
This was helpful! I have a lot of things I don’t really wear any longer and feel overwhelmed at the thought of editing my closet. I will try your technique and try to view the other videos you referred to.
Enjoying your advice with a ‘slow’ coffee this morning. Love your commentary - even unpleasant metaphors. One I use when reviewing my closet is ‘when in doubt, leave it out’.
Haha thanks Kathleen :) that's a great one! Enjoy your slow morning xx
Thank you for your insight. Dumping all my clothing on the bed is totally overwhelming. I do sections one at a time. I can't afford clothing and lost some weight last year. I'm revising stored clothing and what fits and I like, I keep. I was brutal with cleaning my summer clothing, If I haven't worn it and/or it doesn't fit, it goes. Now I'm evaluating winter. I'm almost done after one year. I'm so much happier with my smaller curated closet. Many blessings to you.
Loved this! Just spent the past week deleting Pins on my fashion Board that don’t fit my style. I now have a clear vision for what I want in my wardrobe. Huge help in nailing down the 3 words that describe me. As I clean things out I’ve copied your list and ready to get that new wardrobe that I love!
All of the ideas, for future videos, sound very helpful and informative. I appreciate you, Alyssa! Thanks so much! ❤️
I love this method; the Marie Kondo method is definitely too overwhelming for me! I can’t wait to hear your ideas for merchandising a closet.
Marie Kondo's method is too drastic and benefits the drift stores and so on...
Yay! Hope they work for you! xx
I always love your videos and deliberate consideration of every piece in your wardrobe. I've commented before how much I love your vibrant red shirt. Given your love of neutrals, it seems a great addition to me. I feel you're on the fence about it and have a suggestion. If you remove the epaulets, I think you'll see it in a new way. This is a pretty easy change you can do yourself. Just remove the button, unpick the seam where the epaulet is sewn in, remove it, and restitch the shoulder. You can definitely do it. Hope this helps.
Perfect timing for this video! I loved your pre-cleanse questions! Watch this channel religiously
Finally some practical tips on decluttering! I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Please continue ❤️
Thanks!!! I loooove your interpretation of slow fashion. I think I'm actually, finally, ready to declutter my wardrobe and wear all the clothes that I already own and love. Lots of style tips and encouragement from your channel! 😘
Your videos make Sunday’s less bittersweet. Thanks for another great one.
I absolutely LOVE your videos! Thank you for being such a great style inspiration!
Loved all these tips! I totally agree on your lists of questions too! I think is super important to not get overwhelmed when organizing your closet. Taking EVERYTHING out will drive me crazy and turn me off. I also think it’s best to do it in sections. I put on some cool music or podcast, drink tea or wine and have fun with it. One last thing is the garment needs to make you feel good and confident.
Dear Alyssa, the more I watch your videos, the more I appreciate you! Thank for your (wholesome) approach and your smile. Best regards from the French Riviera.
Wonderful video Alyssa! I've just pulled all of my things out of my closet to go through tomorrow. These questions are great to ask!! xoxo
Really found this helpful and looking forward to all the others you mentioned. Love your channel! ♥️
So glad you found it helpful :) Thanks for watching! xx
Thanks- I really felt like I learned some new things, beyond the "standard" decluttering methods. I especially appreciated the part about asking yourself those questions about whether your lifestyle has changed and what your closet goals goals are, etc. It adds a nice feeling of intentionality. 🙂
This was great Alyssa, thank you! I'm decluttering & updating my wardrobe. These are great questions. You just made it a bit easier🌷
Your video came just in time! Yes to your future videos on closet organization! Thank you Alyssa. Hand and wrist still stiff. I am continuing rehab exercises. As you can see, I am writing comments again.
I loved this! Thank you so much for doing this video and making the PDF! Your approach to closet curation has been the least stressful and most realistic of any I've encountered and I'm grateful. It really helps to hear you say this is a slow process that only happens over time. I think when I first started with the slow fashion closet curation process I somehow thought it would kinda be one and done, and got down on myself when it was taking longer. But lo and behold these things take time and it's so helpful to hear you say that and hear that you've encountered your own mistakes too. I will say after a few years I think I'm almost hitting a groove where I am starting.to love most of what I have! I still have work to do but...your content and relaxed and realistic approach get me closer all the time! Thanks! Oh and I would love to see what you've added this season AND how to make our closets more fun to shop like boutiques! Yay!
Another great video Alyssa! I love the questions to ask while sorting they your closet- will be incorporating these into my closet reviews for sure.
Yes, helpful. Thanks for the PDF! Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Ciao Bella! Great summary of how to keep your closet working optimally for you! I love, love love your red shirt and think it's so flattering on you. It's a keeper and fun extra to expand your magic closet even more!
Alyssa, you are wise beyond your years. I for one(68) am learning so much about how I feel and look when I wear my outfits. If I can’t transform them to make me feel good about myself , I’m learning to let go
Thanks you.
Hi Alyssa!
I started a “maybe” bin a few days ago. Glad you reinforced that concept! I’m going to go back through with the “does it go with three other things” question in mind. Thanks for your wisdom.
Love it! Great minds :) thanks for watching! xx
Hi Alyssa, I too am a fan of both you and Audrey Coyne. Between you you share so much style advice. Love your videos. Thank you very much x
Love the idea of merchandising your closet...can't wait for that one! Great video this morning!
Fantastic tips! I did this four months ago and I absolutely love having a 'mistake- proof' waredrobe. Dressing is such a pleasure now that I know I like everything and it fits.
This is a video that I have “ kept”. Never have been brave... love the idea of a “ Maybe Basket”. Bless you... the lists are so deeply thought out and reaches us personally! Wow, you nailed it 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🌟
yay! I'm so glad you found it useful :) Thanks for watching Joan! xx
I'm looking forward to the series! Sounds very helpful!
This sounds like a useful and interesting series. I’m looking forward to it.💕
Glad you like those ideas Jeanne thank you for watching xx
Great video. Love the additional video ideas too! Thanks Alyssa!
Yes to a video on merchandising your closet! What a great idea. I would love that.
Great advices! Your videos are always very helpful! Thanks for sharing! 🤗
Some good ideas here. Thank you. I liked the idea of no regrets if you give something away and then later think that maybe you should have kept it. I think that becomes a factor when you start acquiring quality. Then it is easier to think that maybe I should have kept that. I like the idea of rethinking our color choices.
Looking forward to watching this serie! 😘
As always, great information! Love the video ideas for the future!
Probably one-of the most useful videos there. And yes, paper and pen really helps🙂
Yes I am currently going through my closet, your correct it is such a task especially when you have spent a lot of money on something ciao Bellita xoxo🙋🏻🤗👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This is one of the better videos on how to declutter. Really great info!
Absolutely brilliant!
Great ideas for a video trilogy. Looking forward to the next two! Thanx
Ooo, I'm really feeling this idea of a video how to merchandise your closet to make it more stoppable! Can't wait!
This is easily the best closet decluttering video I have ever seen! So appreciate the time you put into this and the way you broke down your process. I learned so much! Happily a new subscriber!
I'm so glad you found it helpful! Thank you for watching and welcome!
So good! Thanks for this video and I am really looking forward to the merchandising video. Thanks for all you do!
This is exactly what I needed right now. Thank you, Alyssa. Love your channel.
I am 58, so feel when I shop, too young to feel old & too old to feel young, I have found Pinterest brilliant, putting in 50 & trendy, works wonders, but I do indulge in some youthful vlogs like yourself to get tips & keep up- dated. thank Alyssa , love from England 🇬🇧💖xx
Thanks so much for watching Carole, I'm so glad you find the channel helpful! xx
Your wardrobe advice crosses the spectrum of styles. Before I quit working my style was very different. It is very easy to translate your points into classic, relaxed, etc,. providing direction options that are realistic and practical. (I enjoy Audrey, but hate scarves.) All your videos are open ended and can be easily used by any viewer. Thank you so very much.
Love the ideas for the new videos. I'm a new subscriber and I'm loving your tips and tricks. Also love that you are Canadian!!!! Keep up the great work.
I would love a video detailing how to arrange my closet to make it easier to see what I already have . I tend to buy similar things over and over 🤦♀️
Hi Crystal! Great suggestion that one is coming! :) Thanks for watching xx
I think I physically need to put my clothes into sections because I have three closets/cupboards with different things all over the place. That would definitely be a start for me. I have de-cluttered over the years, but I definitely have a ways to go. On a side note, I attended a wedding this weekend and wore a black three-quarter length velvet jacket that I've had for 30 years. It's still beautiful and I felt great. I haven't worn it often, but I'm so glad I kept it. It's now considered vintage, lol.
Excellent video! I'm going to send this to my college senior daughter who will be transitioning to the work world. Time to move beyond the crop tops and joggers!
Yes, to all of the video ideas!
Loved it! 🤗
I love all those video ideas! Look forward to seeing them! :)
This is perfect I’m moving and lifestyle has changed to retirement and I’m struggling with giving up some work clothes and finding a new style perfect! Thanks so much😀
Yes! The 2 next subjects are very interesting to me! I'm getting myself ready to work on my room and closet as the next big project. (Finishing the kitchen redo first!) This is all
very helpful to me. Thanks!
Watching this again! I like that not-so-pleasant metaphor for emptying the closet all over the bed! That's the way I feel about it! You've always got some great encouragement for us! Hugs!
I love the idea of merchandising your own closet!
Alyssa, this was a very helpful video! 😊
I always enjoy watching your videos, Alyssa. I'm in the closet maintenance stage these days, and am pretty happy with my smaller closet and how well things can mix & match. That said, I still tend to wear the same favorite combinations together and would like to get better at changing it up. Maybe the "merchandising" closet video would help with that--I'm looking forward to it!
Love your videos! ❤️ I have a hard time paring down my closet. One thing that has really helped me is during Lent (40 days) I choose one thing everyday that I can part with. I find it easier to get rid of one thing at a time 😉.
Hi Alyssa...And .....Yes on interested in all those topics.....great vid. X, S
Great video once again.
What a great method to follow! I too am not about closet vomit on my bed, too daunting to see the pile. Delayed Decision basket, brilliant. And yes, please! to your new suggested themes, all sound like winners. As always, my closet and I Love You A Latte! XO
Cleaning my closet now thanks for the tips❤️
Upcoming videos sound great. Closet decluttering is an ongoing process for sure. It is such a struggle. But I am going to write the questions down to ask myself and see if that helps. I wish I had you here personally to help me go thru it all. Haha! Anyway, thanks for the tips and motivation. :)
Amazing, as always. Hi, Alyssa! Never thought of those questions prior to evaluating the current wardrobe, but you're absolutely right - starting from acknowledging where we are in this moment removes a lot of guilt, so we can tackle the task with joy, kindness, compassion and self-respect... P. S. I hope you had an amazing Thanksgiving with your family 🍁🍁🍁... P. P. S. Missed the intro and the ciao and the kisses 😞🙄🙏💖Ciao, xoxo N
Thanks for making this video! Was so helpful! Just subscribed! 😊
Love every single one of your videos !!! - incl the oldest. We have cold winters; fashion never addresses the need to stay warm beyond furs on the runway each autumn, I feel. But thank goodness you do! More vids on layering any day.
Re: this one - Pray tell, you don't actually hang your sweaters on hangers in your personal wardrobe, tho'......???
will do on the layering suggestion! And great q - I fold all of my sweaters so they don't lose their shape on the hangar, it's just there for video aesthetic purposes! haha
Whew! I have never had any luck hanging sweaters. Glad I'm not alone. Do you build the outfit around the sweater or try to sneak the sweater into the outfit? You can cover that later this winter....but dying to know. Thanks again, Alyssa!
I've just discovered your channel and I am hooked! I love the advice you give, it's like a fresh breeze after all of the "get rid of most of the things you own" attitude. I never found that to work for me, I'm quite a mix of minimalism and maximalism (loads of jackets, but very few of everything else). I'm in the process of making sure I only have the things I truly love in my closet and these questions were really helpful. Keep up the good work!
Love,
Tiina
Wow Tiina, thanks for the kind words and encouragement!! I'm so glad you find the channel helpful :)
Love these tips
Thank you for sharing your ideas & tips! Your closet is very organized. I am comfortable with a large closet. If it is too minimal...I panic. I organize by type of item and within each group colors. I am always looking/editing. I am working towards making the spare bedroom into a boutique-like place where I can shop my wardrobe. It does mean editing. I did a lot this season....found a pair of Joes Jeans I purchased over 20 years ago...in a gray, flair, mid waist....they fit so well. I wore them out with a new sweater (H&M Pringle Collaboration..there was a sweater from the Concious Collection in a gray and white Argyle) Sometimes, when I wear one garment a lot in one season....I need a break from it. I may store it in a tub if I am not inclined to wear it. I do this with some very trendy pieces that I like, but do not want to wear until the trend hits its peak and is on the other side of it. I just put these pieces into a clear tub. I find after a year...I will be in love with it, again.
This is a thoughtful approach to curating a usable closet. For me it's the white tops. I always *think* I need them, but I just never wear them. Four months ago I experimented and donated all of them and I honestly don't miss them.
Very practical and to the point.
Hi Alyssa, I'm new to your channel and am loving your videos. Thank you for your thoughtful tips and tricks. I already follow Audrey and Justine, so I couldn't be happier!
Hi Louise! Oh wow love both of those ladies, i'm honoured to be among them! Thanks for watching! xx
That was awesome ♥️
Love your videos and your yellow table/mirror😊
Always love your work Alyssa! Agree 100% with your tips. 🖤Deb
