This was a great topic. I am 70 and have done this throughout my life. As a retired person, the dress is much more casual for the most part, but I also love the juxtaposition of of various jewelry with casual dress. I have a nice variety of silver and gold pieces that I sometimes even pair together for a look. (At my age, why save them for a special occasion?) I would have to say that not a day goes by when I am out running errands that I don’t get stopped and complimented on my outfit, hair or jewelry. Even my husband has mentioned it. Be playful with your style. You will enjoy each day as you create something brand new and your “audience “ will too!

"Always use your good items" is the best advice anyone can receive, I have a childhood trauma, cause my mum got me a gorgeous pair of embroidery trainers and only allowed me to use in special occasions which means once, cause the 2nd special occasion I had they didn't fit anymore 'cause I had grown.

I’m sure your mom was disappointed as well, I’ve done that in the past with my kiddos. I find the pieces to be so precious I’m scared they are going to ruin them 🫤 and them by the third wear it’s too small, no more of that for me.

I really like the advice "always use your good items". Almost all my life I have been saving my jewelry for only some very special occasions. My mom also used her nice jewelry pieces only for birthdays. Last year she sent me a really beautiful necklace for my birthday and I put it in my storage for few months in order not to break ist. But then I saw a video about "using the good items" and started to wear the necklace. It made such a big difference to "see" that I am allowed to use every single piece of my jewelry or shoes or clothing and don't need to save it for later. I also don't know where I saw that advice but I am really happy you mentioned it, too. Thank you!

A very personal remark: I think the most common style mistake is to think that jeans go with everything. If instead of jeans you took a pair of trousers in a different material but the same colour, you could well decide that they didn’t go with your top, but if they are the ubiquitous jeans, it works. I don’t think so. The one example you used where the Wrong was a dark red top paired with black trousers and the Right was the same top paired with jeans, the Right to me was an unpleasant colour combination, so I much preferred the Wrong. Apart from that, thank you for an informative video. Very well presented. Love that you didn’t spend an age on an intro before you got the point.

red and blue go well together if they have similar saturation. red and black can be too stark of a contrast.

Great video, thanks for posting, some good pointers!
This may be a little off-topic for this vid, but one of the best things I ever did for myself was asking a colleague (who had incredible personal style) to do me the favor of coming shopping with me one Saturday. (I returned the favour by helping her out with work strategies).
I went to some stores that I had always liked but had always made very "safe" choices or not dared to try things.
She pushed me into trying on outfits and accessories and going to new stores, that I had NEVER thought would look good on me or that I could pull off.
I could not believe how smart her choices were - the outfits from that one afternoon of shopping got me through many seasons at work and a TON of compliments. She started me on the journey of trying new things and styling things new ways without getting crazy. Still my "style" but just a little bolder and more sophisticated.
Not everyone is lucky enough to have a friend like that, but I REALLY recommend it if you have someone who is willing to shop with you, or hiring a stylist if you are able to - and ALSO - never underestimate a GOOD salesperson in a store - I used to avoid the sales people like crazy unless I needed to locate something, but rarely listened to them.
After this shopping trip with my friend, I started asking for a bit more help from sales people in-store. One in particular seemed pushy to me but I listened to her and couldn't believe how right she was! Some of these salesgirls (salespersons) are very, very good at helping if you let them. At least try.
So if you are not totally confident in your style choices, take advantage of the people around you (especially who are there in person with you) who have the ability to see or imagine something on you or an outfit's potential. This is a talent - so ask for help when you can!
And vids like these help a lot too, of course!

Another point, I think that your oversize top worked with the oversize trousers because the top falls beautifully. If it were a stiffer material, it wouldn’t work as well, but because it falls well, it still follows the contours of your body. The fabric qualities are something people don’t always take into consideration.

Honestly Emily, I would have once said anyone with your figure and beautiful face could have worn anything and still looked good. Then you compared the white jacket and printed pants against a shorter denim jacket and the difference is very clear. Same with tucking the oversized top in the oversized pants. A lot of us hide under baggy clothes but using these simple tricks actually work to create a waistline that some of us don't naturally have. Happy birthday Nate

I read the original Heloise’s book (she used to have a homemaker advice column in the newspaper decades ago) and she was the one who said always use your good items for your loved ones and not to save them for company. I read her book as a young girl, and took this to heart. But this applies to your clothing as well…use your best items for YOU! I was guilty of keeping my “good” clothes hidden away. Now I wear them and get asked “where are you going all dressed up?”, lol.

In all likelihood your body type \ kibbe body style frame totally enables you to wear two oversized item pieces :) Most other types would find it much harder or near impossible to pull off an overly baggy look!

I think that personally I can get stuck wearing the same thing for years, sometimes we need to try something that works for someone else, we should challenge ourselves a bit. Yesterday I decided to belt a dress that I really like and it gave it a very different look, I loved it. I had seen a video in which a similar dress was styled with a belt and it looked great on the other person, I tried it and really liked it. My 9 year old daughter also gave me the thumbs up 😊

I always like to use the rule of three as well as the rule of thirds! Adding a third piece (instead of just top and bottom) like a sweater, jacket, belt or scarf can make such a difference if something isn't coming together. Sticking to a color palette has been super helpful for me too. I used to "not have anything to wear" because my colors were all over the place - it kept me from creatively pairing things together that would have worked great together otherwise. Limiting myself now to a smaller range of the neutrals and cool shades that look best on me, I feel a lot more "me," and it gives me a lot more versatility with a smaller number of items.
When we talk about balance between loose/fitted proportions I think it's important to consider fabric weight as well. It makes a big difference if you're pairing oversized pieces made of lighter fabrics with nice drape, vs. bulky sweater-weights and denim. In summer and hot climates, long loose layers are simply more practical and comfortable, but I also think it looks very elegant as long as the fabric moves well. (But, I am a bohemian grandmother at heart so maybe that's my personal bias showing lol.)
I learned a saying recently, "we're too poor to buy cheap stuff." Our great-great-grandparents would probably laugh at us for considering it a revelation, but it really is better to have fewer, nicer things, and love and care for and use them often. I used to be addicted to novelty, frankly, and when you're in the fast fashion rut it's hard to break that. I gave myself a challenge a few years ago not to buy anything new for a year (or if there was something I absolutely needed for a very specific purpose, to buy it secondhand) and it helped a lot to break me of that habit. Or at least, now I channel the treasure-hunting compulsion into finding really good quality items secondhand. Baby steps right? 😂

These are all great tips. My personal rule is cinched waist, and everything loose. I used to think, visually it's for an hourglass figure (I am very petite and skinny), but also, I realized, I just have sensory issues 😄 living in a very hot humid climate, I don't want anything sticking on me.

All summer I tend to live in tunic dresses that hit somewhere between mid thigh and just above my knee. I've never really understood why I felt like they were so flattering, but it's totally a rule of thirds! I'm quite long of rib and my natural waist is pretty low on my frame, so I've never gotten the other way to work outside of something like an empire waist maxi dress. Thanks for the "aha" moment!

good video. my issue is i keep gaining weight and therefore went into a FREEZE state at some point where i refused to buy new clothes because i wanted to buy 'nicer' clothes after losing weight, which was NOT HAPPENING. i looked like a bum ALL THE TIME because there was no coherence between my tops or bottoms.. and then like you said 'it just clicked one day'.. i had some pants that i had bought in bulk from poshmark, and they would fit CURRENT ME, and i went out and bought some tops to match them or even paired together some FEW from closet.. and slowly it's starting to click MORE AND MORE... ive always been in this curation journey through videos like yours for several years.. it is definitely a long process..

Ohhhh, this was an amazingly helpful video, Emily. Such great tips and tricks. Loved all of your outfits. I do really struggle getting my proportions right! I'm an hourglass ⌛️However, I'm only 155cm, so it's not as flattering for me (I think). I can get the bottom to look ok with heels (5 to 6cm), but the top section is always my issue. I have a short torso, but cropped doesn't always work that well for me. My hair is growing back after chemo, but it's still very short, and my face needs a fringe of some sort. I will get there, but my hair style, as you said, makes a very big difference too. Loved Fantas cameos, he is such a beautiful big ginger boy 🐈 I can not believe Nate is now 2 years old. Time flies so quickly. Thank you Emily 💗

Yay, thank you Kate!!! 💕🙏 Thinking about your vertical proportions for balance is also important and I didn't touch on that in this video. Do you know yours? Do you tend to have a short torso, and longer legs, or a longer torso and shorter legs? Do you gave a short mid-section (between your bust and hips)? Knowing all of these proportions can help as well. But petite dressing is so particular, and can take a lot of trial and error to find the right pieces.
Sending love for hair growth 💕 is it coming back any different? I remember my sisters came back quite curly after chemo. x

@EmilyElizabethMay I do have slightly longer legs, now I've had both my breasts removed with no reconstruction it makes me look longer in the torso 😆 I'm now looking at a completely different situation in regard to my proportions 🙃 My hair was really wavey with a lot of curls, like my dads was. However, it's grown back completely straight like my mum! No sign of a wave or curl. I don't mind, though. Aw thank you so much that means a lot! 🙏🙏 .. haha such a suprising realisation when you work out you don't actually suit a very common colour. Mine was BEIGE! And my whole wardrobe was beige at one point 🫠😅 I still have a few beige pieces, but I tend to not love it around my face anymore.

@@EmilyElizabethMay I know they all work hand in hand, but I just couldn’t master the art of purchasing the right ones. I always end up buying a lot of black bags and other random colors that don’t really go well with my shoes or outfit. It’s the same with shoes. That video (soon) would really help a lot. Thank you so much for noticing. Love your vlogs as always. ❤️

I have a lot of jackets that are like the cream one you showed that was imbalanced. Can you show how you would "fix" that outfit, please? Side note - love the navy cord wide leg pants!!

    • @EmilyElizabethMay
      @EmilyElizabethMay  6 місяців тому +3

🩷🙏 I would start by unbuttoning the jacket this will help you to create a new horizontal eye line with your trousers. I tend to avoid wearing “midi” jackets done up if I’m wearing long trousers, as it cuts us off in the middle of our bodies (creating that 1:1 ratio that isn’t ideal).
Also, wide leg trousers tend to look quite heavy with a midi length jacket, so I would personally pair with a straight leg trouser to create more balance as well.
Also, this length of jacket looks amazing with mini skirts/shorts too.
Wearing a monochromatic outfit underneath your jacket will help create length.
And at the end of the day it all kind of depends on your own vertical proportions too.
I hope this is somewhat helpful! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ xoxox
