    This video is original. By taking his time and getting out of the conformed "professional" look, this guy takes his time to connect with his audience. I will subscribe and like for the first time. This may be weird, but to me, this is where my comfort zone is. It really feels as if I am connected with the video!

    I am a student of Indian classical vocal music, and your videos have helped me a lot. I trawled through many channels before finding one, yours, that 1. gets straight to the point. 2. does not try to sell the viewer something 3. is based on science and has no mumbo-jumbo 4. and communicates its message calmly and lucidly.
    Thank you so much.
    You are the first voice coach who has comprehensively demystified the whole issue of registers, and how it is not useful to be thinking about them, because they are controlled by muscles over which we do not have conscious control, but urges singers to focus on reproducing the sound they want, and trust their brains to harness the relevant muscles in the throat and around. Have I got this right? :)
    I was wondering whether you had any more videos focusing on the topic of how to work on improving one's timbre.

      Richard schooping That's the popular way to think about it - but it reality muscles make no decisions. It's simply a preference within your brain - like how English keeps taking over when I try and speak French. Mindful, deliberate practice unlocks the behavior.

    You said an HOUR? A person should ideally vocalize for an hour a day, before singing the songs they are working on? Is that what you are saying? How much time should ideally be spent on exercises before singing songs? What about this cool down concept? can you help me out here? Thanks..Like I stated before I hurt my voice 2 or 3 times, and dont want this to ever happen again..

    • @kingwillie206

      That is a complicated question without hearing what you are doing. I would suggest mastering technique at low volume and in your lower and middle chest register prior to attempting loud notes or straining for high notes.

    Hi Baxter! I´ve been doing this great Ex as a warm up and recently I´ve noticed a sensation of "inhaling" as I go thru the "mix" range of notes. It can be both by singing in Head voice or Mix. Its a very comfortable feeling but feels more like the air is going IN rather than singing OUT. Is this something you also have noticed? Is the "illusion" because the stomach moves inward as the air goes out? Almost like the voice switches and goes upside down? Haha hard to explain, maybe you can explain it better if you know about this, thanks!

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  8 років тому +32

      +Rob Lundgren Live Vocals Yes yes yes - Rob!! That's absolutely the sensation you want to embrace. It's simply because your air pressure is truly proportionate and therefore it feels like your singing without doing anything. We're all so used to bulldozing our voices to create a powerful sound (really just us avoiding vulnerability) that it feels wrong at first (almost like cheating) to do so little and hear so much. You found vocal balance - what classical singers refer to as "singing on the inhale." But it's not exclusive to classical sounds - it's all about proportionate energy. Congrats!

    • @RobLundgren
      @RobLundgren 8 років тому +14

      +Voice Lesson.com Wow! that was actually what I was going for these weeks, to really find that perfect balance, guess I found it :) Thanks for confirming what I already was thinking! And this is not only for singing, its actually how life works in any area, perfect balance between too little or too much = evolving and growing in a natural way. Perfect Balance + Patience = Success ;)

    Mark, you actually had me laugh out loud on this one! I love the switching of locations. Great way to make an important point. For example, there have been many a gig when I could feel that I may have pushed too hard and during a moment when I didn't have to sing, have done an exercise right there on stage to realign things and get myself back in sync so I could proceed with a loose, controlled voice. No one knew what I was doing and it made all the difference. Great stuff, as usual!

    • @Matamoroscamila
      @Matamoroscamila 8 років тому +1

    • @TheDarinAmes

      @Camila
      Hi, Camila. I was very fortunate to study personally with Mark for over 4 years. Not only is he a tremulous guy and a great friend, but he's an incredible vocal coach/teacher.
      The exercises I referred to (the kinds I do when on stage when no one knows I'm doing them) are things like the low glissando "oohs" to loosen things up and scales of "he he he..." to realign and relax my vocal flaps. If I feel myself pushing because of a bad on stage mix or quiet monitor, these exercises put me right back on track and no one is the wiser.
      Hope this helps and good luck!

      +Jhon Adams Singing is easy, if your going through voice cracks. It's best to lie low and wait. Iv'e wanted to sing but I have really bad voice cracks. I improved by literally using a guitar.

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  8 років тому +7

      I couldn't disagree more. Vocal cracking is just a tiny slip of coordination - just like when your finger lands wrong on a fret when playing guitar. Do you lie low when you flub on guitar? Nope - you practice more. And that's exactly how the voice improves.

    How many octaves does this exercise cover? Voice Lesson.com
    It is as awesome as on the first day, or even better, and I can now go from the lowest up to the highest notes. (or probably higher) and back. I don't think I am using the falsetto anymore.
    Do it every day. As well as the other useful exercises on this channel.
    God bless you, #MarkBaxter

    Love your videos, the vocal health quite hum has been especially helpful to me along with your emphasis on relaxing the face. Quick question I know you don't recommend lifting eyebrows or closing eyes for high notes but do you have a opinion on the "singers smile." I know it can be a queue for lifting soft pallet which I don't really need anymore, but I also saw it is good to have more taut skin near cheeks for sound to resonate. Although that goes against your "na, ba, na, ba, na" scale drill to relax face. I assume that is more than just a drill and that there shouldn't be any smiling, or is it good for omberture? Thanks!

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  4 роки тому +1

      I don't recommend "telling" the body what to do in any manner. The behavior necessary to create any sound is enacted by the "asking" for the sound. The voice is so much more complex than anything we can consciously command. Lifting the pallet, tensing the cheeks, etc., are a small piece of a very large mechanism. I have no problem if a sound triggers my mouth to create a slight smile. But if I tell my mouth to sing with a smile I will sound like a Walmart greeter! The body is not dumb - just inhibited. Promote freedom and you'll sing with comfort and control.

    • @wilydingus
      @wilydingus 4 роки тому +2

      @@voicelessondotcom Great response thank you so much, and love the walmart greeter comment haha! I really appreciate the answer especially on an older video. Similar to the advice that works best for tennis players after they learn technique. I was always too focused on stroke technique that I wouldn't just focus on the ball and the feeling, when that is what I really needed. I definitely am the same with singing but your videos have helped me with it and I am eager to continue improving. Keep up the great stuff thanks boss

    Thanks for the Vids Mr. Baxter! I've really enjoyed the great information presented in a clever fashion... Anyways, I have a brief question for you!... When I am vocalizing, I often notice a crackling/scratchy kind of sound when holding out many pitches. This scratching/crackling is not painful or irritating and I am not straining at all, but I do hear a slight interference with the fundamental pitch that I am singing when this occurs. Is this normal? and What might be the cause of this? I am confident that I sing with good breath support.

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  10 років тому +1

      If a scratching/crackling sound is what you're going for - then I would agree your breath support is good. But if you're intending to produce a clear sound and not getting it then obviously something is out of balance. I assuming the sound you're referring to is a vocal frye mixing in with the fundamental. It's not harmful or irritating - it just indicates the vocal folds are not receiving a proportionate amount of air for the sound you're asking for. Notice it only shows up on certain vowels while other vowels on the same pitch are unaffected. This is because the air needs to calibrate as you sing and you are focused on producing a steady flow. Instead - slow down when this occurs and give your reflexes time to adjust until you hear the clarity your want. With practice you'll learn to allow the air to self-regulate rather then enforce a single behavior.

    Have started singing again after 30 years and Mark's videos have helped me discover connection and coordination that eluded me in years of private voice lessons...and it is such a joy to finally be able to vocalize w/o tension! I love this particular exercise! Is it common for it to be difficult? I find that I start to poop out about half-way through. I'm setting myself a challenge to get through my entire range and back again w/o having to stop and rest. Many thanks, Mark!

    • @voicelessondotcom

      Yes - it's very common when working back your voice to need to pace yourself. Be patient - you'll get there!

    what's the difference btw warmup, vocalizing, and training?
    1. is warmup just pre-singing work in and unlike training(?) which helps improve overtime? and vocalizing just one type of training?
    (i know finding different vocal goals, like range, runs, duration etc as you mention in this video, and working on them is technically training? umm...

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  Рік тому +2

      The challenge level is the difference. A warmup is a reconnection with your voice. A workout should challenge your skill level. Training is working on a specific vocal target.
