May God be with them forever and they with God.
I grew up Christian and in the past couple of years I have started to drift away. I couldn’t put in my own words when I ask myself if I believe in God but in the songs Trees and Implicit demand for proof it just takes the words out of my mouth. In Trees I relate to when Tyler sings “I want to know you I want to see I want to say hello”. I just want a sign to know that someone is out there and just ask questions that haven’t been answered. In the song implicit demand for proof when Tyler sings “I mean no disrespect I am simply very perplexed by your ways”. That’s how I feel about religion right now. Like I am happy that others find comfort and have faith in what they believe in but it’s just not for me and hopefully someday I too can find the same comfort.
Thanks for sharing this! That means a lot you would take time to tell me how you feel here. I know I deal with my own doubts and questions often as well. I think the detail that Tyler calls the song Trees, and it’s standing in the trees asking God for a sign from Him is significant. I look at my own life and I see things that hurt and don’t make sense, and I see prayers answered. But with Trees it reminds me that the Bible tells us that nature itself is own way we can find confidence in God’s existence. But believe in God is a very personal thing. It is something you can talk yourself out of, or into. But at its core it’s about faith in Jesus. I do find comfort believing in God, however I can’t say I haven’t pushed for God to show me an extra sign. And in many ways, He has. I am reminded of something Jesus said to people while he was on earth. He said those who are seeing Him then and witness all this proof that he is God are blessed. But even more blessed are the ones who believe without seeing Him. I hope this shows you I really appreciate you opening up about something so personal here. It means a lot you are share if this! No matter what I'm going through at the time, my faith could be plummeting, or I could be having an awful day; JESUS stays consistent. He is the rock and my weakness could never change that fact. @@jennybaker5713 the reason why is in the Bible, sadly most Christians don't read the Bible these days (I am not exempt). Also, if you knew why, it would make you angry at humans. Thanks Eric! That is an interesting idea! Yes Trees I believe has always been like a tithe to God for their show. In many ways what they do is very worshipful! Personally I think they lead by example. What I mean by that is their lives and conduct are set up to not contradict themselves. Sadly, I believe if they were to come out and share the gospel at a show or in a video, I don't believe they would find much response. Simply because that is a very personal choice that many people make for themselves day to day. That seems like it would be a very hard sell. God could definitely do a work in people and use them to bring others to salvation, but I'm not sure if a secret mission is what they have in mind. When I first became a fan for a few years I thought a similar thing, but lately I have had a different thought. Here is my best guess. 1. For shows, it is a celebration of life and to keep moving forward. They have songs about God and end with trees because it's meaningful to them, and also, like I said, they are giving a tithe back to God for what He has given them. It is very discouraging to me (and I'm sure them as well) that the fan chant for trees has become "Here we f**king go!". Not sure why fans would do this when they themselves don't use language in their songs, or videos, or interviews at all. 2. The truly curious fans could see their lives and be convinced. A fan does't need to dig far to learn about their faith and how it is so important to the music. Yet so so many people ignore that side. But a few fans could see it, and WILL either be encouraged, or come to faith themselves. Again they are leading be example on this front. 3. They are helping the mental illness that is so powerful these days. Their main message has been find a kitchen sink if you have nothing else, and stay alive! This is beneficial for salvation! The less people finding themselves in a place considering taking their life is definitely a win for humanity, and the God that gave us life. 4. They are artists and they love good music and telling stories. Their secret narrative of Dema is complex and ready to be discovered around every turn. I myself understand this passion! It's fun, and it adding more artistic depth to an already beautiful body of work. Sorry for all this information, but I have to say I have been wanting to discuss this very idea with other fans to see what you think. I agree almost all they do is very worshipful, and that in itself is a powerful victory for people to possibly come to Christ. Dude I loved this video! This has been something that I have been thinking about for years. It’s what draws me to their music over and over. Trees is my favorite song and I thought I’d share what the song means to me personally. I look at it in 3 parts each time he begins to restart singing the lyrics again. The first time he sings through the lyrics you notice how the actual music itself isn’t as intense as later on. I believe that this first time through is him considering that God is out there but that he as a human is just too cowardly to chase after God and seek righteousness and he slumps back into the mindset that maybe God can’t help me after all. I believe that the little piano rif after shows that he is in a little bit of a depressing state of mind. Then the second time he sings through the lyrics the music gets way more upbeat thanks to Josh’ drums and after we listen to him sing through the lyrics a second time it doesn’t sound so much like he’s questioning God like he was the first time around. It sounds like he’s accepting that he is human and at times can be a coward but that he very much understands that God is real and actually can save and help him. Then the best part of the song in my opinion, which leads me to tears almost every time I listen to it, is the ending. He doesn’t sing through the lyrics again but it is just the music continually growing more and more powerful. I believe this to mean that the human has passed from their life on this earth and they are on their journey to meet God face to face finally so that their faith becomes sight and they finally see that God has been awaiting their arrival all along and they weren’t alone after all. The very very end when Tyler screams “hello” is the most powerful thing to me because it makes me think about that moment when he walk through the gates of heaven and see God calling out to us saying hello right back as we are so excited to finally meet our Savior. I hope that this explanation of what Trees means to me was enjoyable for you to read. Thanks!
Thanks David!! This is a beautiful breakdown! I love how for you it has parts to it and has a clear story. That’s what they want their music to be for. To take it for yourself and find comfort. Their music is literally our kitchen sink in many ways. That’s awesome dude! Thanks for sharing.
I am secular, but I have been a huge fan of TOP since 2011. Their expression of faith is eloquent and thoughtful, leaving room for others to relate in their own ways.
They are so metaphoric and it’s almost intuitive the cycle you talk about is exactly! Exactly what I go through in my life! It’s insane! That’s why I vibe so much! It’s been a light for me
Trench is a what if album which supposes a Godless place (Dema) but then in the videos and lore he is being rescued from there by “The Torchbearer” and a his band of Christians, I mean “Banditos”. I personally love it and their music! 👍🏻 And Taxicab, where he’s being rescued from the dead path that he believed he was on by the Holy Trinity in a Taxicab? 😊
@@jtika1978 I wonder sometimes if the story Tyler is telling is in part or whole his testimony, and also if he is telling it as it’s happening or is it telling us what he has endured and has come to pass in order to help others and lead them to where we need to be. I am a born again Christian, realigned, and can’t stop telling people that I believe the Holy Spirit flowed through them in order to reach me. I have to believe that others have felt or experienced the same thing. I did not listen to worship music, did not go to church, read the Bible or pray until listened to 21 for like a year and initially stirred that up in me. I would have never even considered listening to worship music back then but I was being reached through them.
@@alejandromata825 well hallelujah! I hope they see your testimony bc I’m sure it’s part of Tyler’s hope in the message of his lyrics! And yes, I believe it is, not only his testimony, but really all of ours who are truly born again. It’s like the book Pilgrim’s Progress (side note: you can see a well loved copy of Pilgrim’s Progress in Josh’s book collection on a show where he and Debby did a tour of their home). They definitely rekindled my fire for God, even as someone who was seriously walking with Him for 8 years prior. We all have moments of coldness, but He never lets us stray too far. When I started picking up on the blatant scripture in the songs on Vessel, then also on blurryface, I was pretty floored in Tyler’s methodical approach to presenting it all. Then I listened to the self titled album and well… 🫠🫠🫠. I feel like Clancy is a culmination & I pray, literally, that they hit us with a straight up worship album next lol. By the way, have you heard Tyler’s features on the album Clear by Whittaker??
@ Clear is a song in Regional at Best, is that what you are talking about? There is also No Phun Intended which is an album Tyler made before TOP. I have the song Travis collaborated with Tyler with the Jesus animation. I like that one, and the animation is cool. If you are not familiar with No Phun Intended, it’s pretty good, especially Drown. And Forrest in Regional at Best is awesome, if you think Trees is cool which it is, Forrest is deep.
What I love about TOP is that even if you're not religious you can appreciate their music. They don't shove it down your throat. They almost make having faith cool in an emo way...if that makes sense? They're a band I can listen too by myself and I can listen to them with my kids. Has anyone noticed they haven't performed Guns for Hands since the Parkland school shooting? I wish someone would ask them if there is a connection there.
@@blvrryvhsIdk if you've heard the leak, I won't spoil it. But the new song has subtle Christian elements in it. I wonder if later songs on Clancy will be about faith.
i'm a christian and i've been to three diferent tøp concerts in diferent countries and they always end with Trees (don't know much about the recent eras). anyway, it's always like a time of praise and adoration to the point it's kinda weird. but i still see how it's a special moment, and i hope the real meaning still reaches new generations. (even if the band don't admit to it)
Many of the current fans seem very anti religion and anti America which is very odd to me. Tyler seems to be quite a religious conservative person and the fans did not seem this way long ago. Wonder why that is. Anyway great video. Well wishes and all the best.
Because they are. A large part of the younger fanbase are in alternative lifestyles & they feel accepted by Tyler & Josh. It’s literally the Holy Spirit through Tyler’s lyrics that draws them in, they just don’t realize it.
Yeah, Trench was the same way, but I actually think that an argument can be made for Formidable. That song does not really make clear sense if you try to interpret it through a person or a number of people. But listen to it from a perspective of God. Let me know what you think!
Yes! Scaled And Icy is propaganda so it’s crazy! But YES Formidable! I would say for Trench, Morph does talk about God though! “Above is blind belief, under is sword to sleeve, and around is scientific miracle. Let’s pick above and see.” But like he was saying in the video, Tyler was experimenting a world without God, but he still is a Christian.
@@wiseworksstudio I feel like even though Trench was done as an experiment of a world without God, He was still very much there in the music, or at least His absence was. Like Sarah said, Morph mentions God, and Leave the City has some references to Him. Tyler has said that the opening lines are about him struggling with faith. SAI feels completely devoid of a God, not in the way Trench does as an intentional removal of Him with bits and pieces poking through, but more of an outside perspective as if he wasn't even there
Dont know what the chance is you will see this but "Clear" off of the album Regional at Best really explains tylers point of view when introducing christian/evangelical writing in his music.
@@wiseworksstudio oh you know I didn’t know their earlier music was more godly and so I’ll take a deeper listen to that one , I just listened to “clear” last night while reading lyrics and I was blown away at how he was talking about his father cleaning him if his dirty blood! Wow that’s a very -‘Jesus/dying for our sins’ heavy line ! Amazing
@@wiseworksstudio I really only discovered them two years ago they got me through some very dark times when I needed to hear there anointed music so I started with trench it’s all I knew so I’m well versed in most songs on their albums except the one before regional at best
I don't know if it's him saying he will lose his faith. Leave The City is a multi-layered song that also connects to the idea of su**ide as well as leaving Dema (breaking the cycle of depression). The lyric that confuses me the most is "in time I will leave the city, for now I will stay alive". I don't know which side means what.
@@MechaKnuckles “The burning is so low it's concerning 'Cause they know that when it goes out It's a glorious gone It's only time before they show me Why no one ever comes back with details from beyond” Tyler is clearly doubting the after life here. Leaving the city is usually seen as a good thing, representing leaving your mental struggles behind. One of these mental struggles is his spiritual battle. When he dies, he’ll leave the city, because your spiritual battles end. You’ll either be in heaven, hell, or you’ll learn neither even exist. “In time I will leave the city. For now I will stay alive.” This battle will end when he dies, but for now he’s staying alive so it continues.
It’s a battle of faith and fame. Kingdom of God and Babylon. And I’ll just add the ending, specifically the key change on the very last chord of the song, which is also the last chord of the album. Pay attention to that next time.
I do kind of question how much of Christians they are, with some of the stuff theyve done with lgbt, like wearing a pride flag at a concert. Idk i guess that doesnt mean they out right support it but definitely a bit questionable. I still love them as a Christian but yea not sure exactly what their beliefs are.
I have had similar questions. But the place I have landed on the matter is their music is first a help against suicidal thoughts. It’s probable that no matter how they feel on this issue that they want to show support to the fans in that community that they have worth as people. Rather than a statement of support for the lifestyle. If you follow the Joseph family members on Instagram, you will see that Tyler has promoted his dad‘s devotional book that he’s written for their church and is still very connected in the Christian community especially through his family. And this was after concerts to which you are referring. You will also find if you dig that charity organizations. Tyler and Josh are connected with as well as friends they are still close to are based out of their church affiliations. And I could be wrong, Tyler has said that his personal faith does look different than the faith his parents have.
@@blvrryvhsit's a positive thing to show support for the LGBTQ+ community and the fact they are allies is comforting. Music is for everyone and unites all different kinds of people. You can be religious and still be accepting of gay people.
In the rap world this is Kendrick Lamar, it's masked behind narrative story telling and provactive words and imagery but it's still poi ting to something that resembles good news
Kendrick is awesome! I love his music and I have a music video reaction for N95 coming today. His profession of Christianity is a strange one at this point. I’m not sure if you know this but with this latest era he seems to be dabbling into some strange ideas. Check out this video breakdown by a guy I watch called Ruslan: ua-cam.com/video/-YhS8zXE7rM/v-deo.html
@@wiseworksstudio I follow him as well! Thank you Ruslan also linked 2 other points of view by 2 different UA-cam and they were also interesting. Especially since the 1st line of the song is describing what the world is like and the the following song seems to describe the state of the world. I don't have an opinion yet but all very interesting 🤔
yeah we know. They are a Rock band that deals with mental health and hope. But they do write music occasionally that deals with the emotions of a relationship with God.
this is not true. the religion that tyler is criticizing is fictional and is used as a storytelling device for the album's characters. he thanks God in clancy's album credits along with Trench's credits, and its still very clear he's a christian.
@@Sam-hk7xt you literally could not be more incorrect. If you’re referring to the LORE, he says vialism is the product of a hijacked religion, much like the plethora of counterfeits that call themselves Christian “religions” today.
It’s been a light for me
That’s great Kristy! Thanks for sharing 💪
i know this is 2 years old but i love tylers no phun intended
Honestly an underrated Podcast love this! Keep it up
Thanks so much James! That means a lot!
Trench is a what if album which supposes a Godless place (Dema) but then in the videos and lore he is being rescued from there by “The Torchbearer” and a his band of Christians, I mean “Banditos”. I personally love it and their music! 👍🏻
And Taxicab, where he’s being rescued from the dead path that he believed he was on by the Holy Trinity in a Taxicab? 😊
Omgosh in the levitate video 😭😭😭 at the end when Nico yanks him back by the neck into the darkness… James 1:14 😭😭😭
@@jtika1978 Oh cool, thanks for pointing out the Whittiker album, I’ll check it out tomorrow. Stay blessed brother! Where do you worship at?
What I love about TOP is that even if you're not religious you can appreciate their music. They don't shove it down your throat. They almost make having faith cool in an emo way...if that makes sense? They're a band I can listen too by myself and I can listen to them with my kids.
Has anyone noticed they haven't performed Guns for Hands since the Parkland school shooting? I wish someone would ask them if there is a connection there.
They put it back on the setlist for the club shows on the takeover tour! I think they just had to roseate it out for a bit.
Praise Jesus! Love Ty and Josh
It would be cool to see them be more forth coming about their faith and the Truth out there. Maybe even after the dema universe wraps up.
It would be so great, I think what comes after Clancy will be more reminiscent of Vessel
@@blvrryvhsIdk if you've heard the leak, I won't spoil it. But the new song has subtle Christian elements in it. I wonder if later songs on Clancy will be about faith.
@@MechaKnuckles next semester is so good and soooo has faith elements, glad they’re having a return to form
The voice that stops Tyler on the road might be God. Just a personal theory I have.@@blvrryvhs
@@blvrryvhs The voice that stops Tyler on the road might be God.
i'm a christian and i've been to three diferent tøp concerts in diferent countries and they always end with Trees (don't know much about the recent eras). anyway, it's always like a time of praise and adoration to the point it's kinda weird. but i still see how it's a special moment, and i hope the real meaning still reaches new generations.
Yoooo a podcast with Clifford. Awesome!
He does have his own podcast as well! You should look it up!
i found it interesting that the wasn't really any christian themes in scaled and icy. every album has had them up until this point
SAI feels completely devoid of a God, not in the way Trench does as an intentional removal of Him with bits and pieces poking through, but more of an outside perspective as if he wasn't even there
@@wiseworksstudio formidable is about his gift of song writing
Dont know what the chance is you will see this but "Clear" off of the album Regional at Best really explains tylers point of view when introducing christian/evangelical writing in his music.
and i just saw someone else commented this... oops! great video!
Thank you!
ME TOO THEY ARE MY FAVORITE CHRISTIAN MUSIC TO LISTEN TOOOOO AND NOBODY ELSE GETS IT W ME THANK GOD U GET IT !!: yayyyy
Lol I’m glad you can relate! Thanks!
Those two are my favs too because they are their most godly songs yes !!:)
That’s awesome Christina!
Trees and March to the sea I mean :)
Yes I remember! I also love taxi cab which I failed to mention on the podcast.
Amazing
@@wiseworksstudio I really only discovered them two years ago they got me through some very dark times when I needed to hear there anointed music so I started with trench it’s all I knew so I’m well versed in most songs on their albums except the one before regional at best
bro you deserve more subs :D
Listen to “Leave the City”. Fire is a metaphor for faith in God throughout TOP’s songs, but Tyler is losing his faith.
@@MechaKnuckles “The burning is so low it's concerning
'Cause they know that when it goes out
It's a glorious gone
It's only time before they show me
Why no one ever comes back with details from beyond”
Tyler is clearly doubting the after life here.
For now I will stay alive.”
This battle will end when he dies, but for now he’s staying alive so it continues.
It’s a battle of faith and fame. Kingdom of God and Babylon. And I’ll just add the ending, specifically the key change on the very last chord of the song, which is also the last chord of the album. Pay attention to that next time.
@ What about the key change?
@@durg8909 does it signify anything to you?
underrated
@@jessicafoulger2177 forgot i commented that, definitely had some view shifts since then. i agree, music is for everyone
They're living in the world.
True 😢
DOUBT all of there music is about faith and revealing truth
I think Trees emulates the story of Zacchaeus in the Bible. I always have.
Tyler talks about his Christianity a bit here: ua-cam.com/video/iiKWFvVPQQY/v-deo.html
Thank you! Yes I have seen this interview moment. Thanks Jennifer!
Fun fact: Twenty One Pilots isn't actually Christian Band but Tyler and Josh is Christians
yeah we know. They are a Rock band that deals with mental health and hope. But they do write music occasionally that deals with the emotions of a relationship with God.
@@wiseworksstudio yeah
they were up till trench and tyler atleast isnt a theist anymore and openly criticizes religion
this is not true. the religion that tyler is criticizing is fictional and is used as a storytelling device for the album's characters. he thanks God in clancy's album credits along with Trench's credits, and its still very clear he's a christian.
lol no
@@jtika1978 lol yup
@@Sam-hk7xt you literally could not be more incorrect. If you’re referring to the LORE, he says vialism is the product of a hijacked religion, much like the plethora of counterfeits that call themselves Christian “religions” today. Otherwise, you’re making stuff up & speaking against this man’s faith.
TOP are definitely not Christians a fact, just listen to lyrics….
Have you? Listen to March to the sea. It’s about god telling Tyler to follow him instead.
They literally are😂
A very good friend of mine is a worship leader. The man who trained my friend is good friends with Tyler and attends the same church. They are not very outspoken about their faith but they definitely are Christians. Lol
Bro what
Christian gaslighting…
Why do you think that?
