One of my favorite "hidden" Christian songs of theirs is Goner, I was surprised you did not mention it. "I'm a goner. Somebody catch my breath" Is totally Tyler calling for help, and realizing he can't do it all alone. Then he follows up with "I want to be known, by you" Which has to be him wanting to be known by Christ.
But I do agree with you, he's just unable to fully embrace it openly.

I don't usually make such long comments lol but bear with me
Hard agree on appreciating the honesty of Christian songs/artists that admit the difficulties along their walks with God.
MercyMe's song "Even If" acknowledges that "It's easy to sing when there's nothing to bring me down, But what will I say when I'm held to the flame like I am right now? ... Give me the strength to sing it is well with my soul" - which I find super helpful as a worship leader. It's not always gonna be a feel-good experience, but God Himself is always good.
Casting Crowns has quite a few songs that are more convicting than feel-good. The Altar and the Door - "Your Kingdom come but my will was done, My heart is broken as I cry like so many times before, But my eyes are dry before I leave the floor ... This time Jesus, how can I be sure I will not lose my follow-through between the altar and the door?" // Jesus, Friend of Sinners - "The world is on their way to You, but they're tripping over me ... Oh Jesus, Friend of Sinners, open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers ... Nobody knows what we're for only what we're against when we judge the wounded, What if we put down our signs, crossed over the lines, and love like You did?" // Somewhere in the Middle - "Just how close can I get, Lord, to my surrender, Without losing all control ... The God we want and the God who is, but will we trade our dreams for His, or are we caught in the middle?" // and I could go on and on..
Seriously, anyone who sees this PLEASE listen to Casting Crowns especially - they are awesome at recentering my focus.
And now I go listen to top on repeat cuz you have brought me into nostalgia too lol

But what are the Christian themes of "Weird Al" Yankovic? Some stuff I thought of off the top of my head:
Amish Paradise: This song is about the Amish sect of Anabaptism. The line "A local boy kicked me in the butt last week, I just smiled at him and I turned the other cheek. I really don't care, in fact I wish him well, 'cause I'll be laughing my head off when he's burning in Hell," references how the Anabaptists place a heavy emphasis on Jesus' teachings in the Sermon on the Mount, particularly "If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also," which they interpret as a call to pacifism.
Everything You Know Is Wrong: In this song the narrator dies and goes to heaven, where he meets Saint Peter.
Nature Trail to Hell: There's a part in this song where if you play it backwards it says "Satan eats Cheez Whiz."
Eat It: Clearly, when Al says "Just eat it, eat it, don't you make me repeat it," he's taking about how we should "just eat" the bread in the Lord's Supper to receive Christ's body spiritually, according to Reformed sacramentology.
That's all I could think of. Let me know of any of you can think of any more epic Christian moments in Weird Al's songs!

I do honestly wonder what you would think of Keith and Kristian Getty. While they may be contemporary, they write more focused on theologically rich messages in their songs, as well as having different instruments than most contemporary worship music. If you give them a try, listen to Christ Our Hope in Life and Death, The Lord is My Salvation, and In Christ Alone.
Musically, they are often better (in my opinion) and more creative with the chords and stuff like that.
I also may be wrong, but I believe Keith Getty was raised Presbyterian (idk if he still is), but yeah.

You talked about not being good at literary analysis and that’s an important thing to bring because I think literature has been overlooked in this new Christian movement. More people are reading thanks to this movement whether it’s the Bible, history, philosophy and theology but not enough Christians are reading poetry outside of Bible and not engaging in literary thinking. I think a lot of people have bad experiences with poetry from school and they don’t consider useful like the other disciplines which I think is a shame since poetry has way to much to offer to just be ignored

@@andylu6150 well there’s nothing necessary wrong with it, but at the end of worship every Sunday, as the pastor is walking up on stage, they always have the piano play this prolonged kind of minimalist sounding riff, that never fully resolves, and it bothers me! Lol and as for what I would prefer, well I would just say fully resolve to the tonic of whatever the last song was, and just leave it at that. I just don’t really see the need for music to continue playing as the pastor is walking up on stage and introducing himself.

    Hello redeemed zoomer,
What do you think the majority of people believed about faith alone before Martin Luther? Do you think they all believed in justification by faith shown by works, or justification faith alone, which leads to works? What do you think the timeline of these beliefs is? (100 AD, 300, 500, 1,000 etc.). Were the majority of them saved? I see people saying “works show that you love Christ” or “you need to have faith and be united with Christ to be saved” If the former is true, then every time someone sins, they are showing that they don’t love Christ. If the latter is true, then every time someone sins, they get separated from Christ, and don’t get saved. Lordship salvation or any belief that says you have to have faith and also improve doesn’t really make sense, because where do you draw the line of how much sin shows you actually love Christ? Then there are the fundamentalist baptists that say anyone who doesn’t believe free grace isn’t saved. This just makes me wonder, how is Christianity even true, if for more than 1000 years, most people believed they have to show faith with works to receive salvation? Only after Martin Luther did some people start to question this belief. Even now, 2/3 of the world is still Catholic/Orthodox. And half the people that are Protestant believe in Lordship salvation. This has been plaguing my mind for the past month, and I’ve watched hours and hours of people discussing this, and this question still hasn’t been answered. I have had serious doubts about how since the majority of Christians teach a type of salvation that doesn’t make sense, maybe the people who actually try to make sense of it (free gracers) are trying to make sense of a religion just because they were born into it or they have bias. I’ve came to a conclusion that: Either Christianity is true, we are all sinners, and anyone who doesn’t accept the sacrifice of God will receive punishment, or there is another savior that will come, and all sinners will be saved, except for Christians because we believe that Christ is God, therefore disrespecting the Jewish God. What is your opinion on this.
    Much thanks
    Yan.

Before there is a controversy in the church about a given issue, it's unclear what people believe in that issue
Before the Council of Chalcedon, it's unclear whether the church believed in one nature or two natures
Before the Great Schism, it's unclear whether the church believed the Filioque

His music is both deeply personal yet highly relatable. It is not based off of modern pop music at all, and he's the ONLY Christian musician I will consistently listen to. He is an insanely good writer and also wrote a children's fiction series that I love as a teen. I have to recommend him to any Christian music snob! Twenty One Pilots is my favorite band and I'm an athiest! I appreciate their introspective and thoughtful lyricism, complicated yet satisfying instrumentals, and just the amount of time, effort, and passion they put into their music and the stories behind each song. Tyler himself is such an immensely talented person that is in touch with his inner self and is able to eloquently communicate his struggles through the tracks. I appreciate that so much, on top of the catchy music itself.
I agree with you about his wholesome themes and I think they're so refreshing in this contemporary era of music. The themes in a lot of popular music are disturbing and the lyrics are even worse.

Y'know, even though you made fun of people saying "oh but you haven't heard so-and-so" I do think an interesting musician you should check out is Steve Taylor, also called the "Clown Prince of Christian Music" though he started in the 80s, his music career spans many decades, he also spanned many different genres. While most of his earlier songs are a bit dated by today's standards, he was incredibly talented as a lyricist. In his songs he criticized secular and Christian culture, going after progressive Christians who allowed gay marriage and abortion, going after scummy televangelists and politicians, many of his songs were controversial for their satirical themes and he sometimes had a hard time marketing his records. He later started another band, Chagall Guevara, that is sorta like 21 Pilots in not being overtly Christian, but having many Christian themes while tackling other topics, after that band broke up, he did producing and writing for Newsboys, and he's responsible for many of their early hits and their witty lyrics. He also did filmmaking, adapting the book "Blue Like Jazz" before finally going back to music. He's also really self-aware if you listen to any interviews with him. He's honestly just a genius.
If you guys want to take a listen, I'd suggest his songs "Comedian", "Jesus is for Losers", "On the Fritz", "Surrender", "I Manipulate" "I Want to Be a Clone", "Over my Dead Body", "The Finish Line", "Smug", "Play God", "Hero", "Sock Heaven", "To Forgive", "Meltdown", "The Lament of Desmund R.G. Underwood-Frederick"
Apart from one or two modern Christian bands, I mostly stick to Christian bands from the 70s-90s. Back then there wasn't this formulaic, safe, sanitized Christian Music industry that there is now. Not only were they not afraid to speak their mind and speak their truth, they weren't afraid to sound different and original. That's why Steve Taylor and Resurrection Band are my favorites since they actually knew how to sound original lyrically and musically. But we've lost that edge, and now it's become something of a laughingstock.

Most of his music is secular.
The Requiem is definitely ecclesiastical, while Figaro's Wedding for example is secular. His symphonies and piano concertos are secular.
Don Giovanni -- I am not so sure about that one, which it is. Technically secular but heavily religious themes there
But I agree - in a way this music is more holy than any psalms or prayers

Mozart had a dedicated gift in my opinion that made all his music an offer up to Christ and not just the overtly religious requiem mass. I thought about it, but I find it only strenghtens my faith. Some people might be totally against songs like that and that is okay. However this conversation is really interesting and I think there might be a lot of people out there thinking if it is okay to listen to this or that. I think one just needs to look into their heart for why they want to listen to the music they do.
