    To be fair, when Billy Gibbins asked Prince how he played it, Prince said he fell across it accidentally and hadn't been able to play it again since, so you've done a fantastic job here. Certainly better than the transciber in the Purple Rain Off The Record band score book ;-)

      I always thought Prince was being polite to Billy. He knew exactly what he played! He just didn't want to embarrass a guy who made his living on that instrument.

    Prince was underrated as a guitarist…he still has sick leads he recorded years ago that he haven’t even heard and maybe never will..he has many recordings locked up in his vault. Prince could and did shred..he was also an accomplished pianist and Bass player. I wish I could hear some of his vault stuff that we never heard..I bet it’s amazing

    It's really interesting that you say @3:32 "that is so Van Halen" given that Prince and Van Halen both recorded at Sunset Sound Studios and that in 1983 Van Halen was transitioning to his 5150 home studio. Prince recorded When Doves Cry in March 1984.
    Prince had recorded there at Sunset Sound since 1981 and I wonder if they ever crossed paths there or if Prince listened in on a VH session.

    • @dannyeddyguitar
      @dannyeddyguitar  11 місяців тому +3

      I will tell you a story that a Music reporter from the Globe and Mail told me 30 years ago. He was a neighbour of my close friend. He said that Prince took lessons from Eddie Van Halen. I mentioned it on a forum and the losers, Prince Fan boys at the gear page kicked me off the Forum because I didn't say he was the best guitar player in the universe. It sounds like Eddie Van Halen and is in Eddie's style.

      Awesome, welcome aboard! Almost all my vids are recorded DI into Logic Pro (previously into Garageband) and then tweaking the amp and FX modellers in post.

    • @dannyeddyguitar
      @dannyeddyguitar  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks heaps Dan! Yeah I was happy with the tone too. I created it within Logic, based upon the 'Woolly Octave" preset.
      It has some slow compression, Dr. Octave with Octave 1 all the way up, no Octave 2. Grit Distortion at about 2 o'clock. 1/4 Note delay.
      But I reckon that Hohner Tele with Kinman pick ups has a lot to do with it.

    Yo Danny, Again you nailed it! Prince was as fast as anybody with a pick can be but always tried to keep it equally as simple. To really get this lick one needs as close to his distortion as well. Another GREAT example of this are the two breaks he does on 'Joy Of Repetition' from One Night Alone, (please give it a listen if you haven't already). There are two versions of that floating around, the first one is the raw version that he played that night, (with video) which he clearly is using just a few notes played incredibly FAST. Even though he may have 'cleaned' it up for the album, it still sounds as though there are only two to three notes played fast enough that the cycling of Effects do the rest of the work. Still this is key to how Prince crafted his solo's. Thanks so much for the efforts in your break downs, they're phenomenal! ~Mark~
