Prince is a beast on Guitar. No doubt even Jimi Hendrix would agree
in my opinion, the best. ever.
Having talent doesn't require playing a million notes a minute - It requires knowing which notes to play during that minute. Prince had talent.
There is a quote from JS Bach back in 1720. He said, "ANYONE can play the organ. Just hit the notes at the right time."
He is talent.
@@MontoyaMatrix wow, that's awesome!
duh
He had way more than talent. Genius is the word, often overused but in his case perhaps not descriptive enough.
Being a producer, a track can get over produced and overwhelmed..for her to say he unproduced it he basically took everything out and left it naked which turned out better than anyone could ever think
Yeah, but if that's the atmosphere an artist wants on their track, then there shouldn't be any problem if it's overproduced.
And what might sound overproduced to you, might not be to someone else.
Yep. Peeled bavk the layers and VIOLA'!!!
The last solo on When Doves Cry is insanely underrated. What an incredible section of guitar playing.
Wendy came close playing it live but not like him
The intro was just as fire, too.
@@mrmiggedy123 I heard a rumor that the intro is actually Jesse from another song. Only heard that once so I still think it's P
@@avace917 that may explain why Prince has said he had been trying to duplicate that solo since. You might be onto something.
@@mrmiggedy123 the odd thing is I've seen him live 4 times and only the first time which was the Purple Rain Tour was that intro attempted. Wendy actually played it
Prince was a rare guitarist. He had unbelievable talent and a feel for the instrument.
Prince was far more than a superb guitarist. He was a genius of a musical chameleon, both instrumentally and vocally. His voice, even in falsetto mode, embodied all the basic instruments of rock and soul. Instrumentally, he could play any musical instrument with precision and perfection. He was an astounding artist! "When Doves Cry" proved this, phenomenally! RIP Our Prince of Rock and Soul! There will never be another like you! Tears! Regrets! Say Hi to God for me please.
He was sooo great he had a girl playing for him for 15 years 🤣
Couldn't of said it better myself 👍🏿
I was just thinking the same thing Michael and Prince were not humans they were musical angels 4 sure! The world will never have anything to compare!
@@starrcompany3275 Who said anything about whoever this Michael person is?
Prince was a musical genius, ahead of his time!
His protected his voice. Man could perform any song live he recorded
The Purple Rain album has to be one of the greatest albums of all time.
Purple Rain wasn't a album but a soundtrack(music score) to the movie
@@frederickwilliams6200 "Film soundtracks are usually an afterthought--mere companion pieces designed to exploit the revenue potential of a movie." To call it a soundtrack, is like calling Aretha just another singer. It so much more.

A true multi-instrumentalist
I'm so tired of them going for hype & trying to feed Peggy ideas hoping she'll start a Van Halen Controversey about Prince. I have the utmost respect for her being totally honest & not falling for it!💜
I was thinking the exact same thing...I doubt Prince would ever come up in a Van Halen conversation...
I think it's because Dweezil was friends with EVH and idolized him a bit, especially when he was younger, from what I understand. But what strikes me as odd about that is if Dweezil was going to compare Prince to anybody, it would be his own FATHER, not Eddie Van Halen.
Yup
Yeah, F'#ck Them !
Right
Computer Blue solo is extremely rock and roll. The most rock and roll solo from prince
Computer Blue is insane
Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad was another 1 Prince went off on
Bambi, I'm Yours, Endorphine Machine. There are loads of them.
"He was fine on his own" That was a big understatement! Awesome video!
To this day When Doves Cry is still one of my favorite songs - it's absolutely perfect
Always loved Prince's guitar playing.
Love the no bozo’s logo. Must be an old schooler? VanHalen fan or Megadave? Just a guess? Me, Both!
That guitar solo changed my life wow how many times I've air guitar played it
The way the songs sounded in his head was what we got, so yes he was a genius.
Yes
that's with all musicians with visions. Not exclusive to Prince.
The dumbest most moronic criteria ever
@@thestrangemanreturns Only if they can play it how they imagine it. they also need a great imagination. most people don't have both and many don't have either.
Saw Prince live in Sydney some yrs ago and his entrance to the stage was wickedly unbelievable he played the arse off his White guitar this man just exudes Sensuality in his manner , he showed All at the Hall of Fame what he is capable of without even raising a sweat didnt he just . Prince was indeed a musical and performing genius truly underrated for his skill set
Ask other well known guitar icons....Prince is RESPECTED.
I wanna know about that opening guitar riff, and (perhaps even more importantly) what has now come to be known as the “Guttural Vocal” immediately AFTER the opening guitar riff! Like, who would think of such a thing? What was the thought process that led him to it? That’s an amazing song TO THIS DAY!
I have read elsewhere that When Doves Cry was the last song written for the album, and he had set out to write a hit because his management/director said they needed one more song, one that would speak to the emotional/relational thread 🧵 running through the film. It went to #1. I really wish you would bring Peggy back and put up the master tape so we can hear all the tracks that Prince created before he unproduced it.
Prince truly was a one of a kind genius artist:
Singer
Song writer
Guitarist
Keyboards
Dancing
Acting
Very few people could do all of that.
I love Prince but I think you’re pushing it with the acting thing.
Drummer!
@@vanthdreadstar8788 : I never said "good actor" but who else can do all of that?
John Stamos
@@majorkade : Yeah but Stamos produced garbage music. Jennifer Love Hewitt put out a record too. Lmao
When Doves Cry wasn't the only song at the time he made the guitar wail. Don't forget Let's Go Crazy that had an even more heavy metal waiting guitar sound and solo.
HES SAYING THAT BECAUSE WHEN DOVES CRY CAME OUT 2/3 MONTHS BEFORE THE MOVIE AND ALBUM. NO ONE HAD HEARD LET'S GO CRAZY YET. I MEAN THAT WHOLE ALBUM HAD HEAVY GUITAR WORK COMPUTER BLUE DARLING NIKKI, THE END OF THE BEAUTIFUL ONES, PURPLE RAIN ITSELF. BUT HE'S WRONG IN THE ASPECT OF ALL HIS WORK PRIOR, DID HAVE LOTS OF GUITAR WORK LIKE THAT TOO. HE OBVIOUSLY JUST DIDN'T LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE PRINCE WASN'T MAINSTREAM. HE WAS URBAN , NEW WAVE, UNDERGROUND IN THE 70s EARLY 80s! NO PLACE NEAR POP TIL LITTLE RED CORVETTE. AND THAT HAD LOTS OF GUITAR IRONICALLY TOO. PLUS HE HAD OTHER GROUPS HE WAS PLAYING ALL THE MUSIC FOR (THE TIME, VANITY 6 ETC) AND THEY HAD LOTS OF GUITAR SOLOS ETC TOO!
She also failed to mention unless she didn't know, but Prince went through phases. During the Purple Rain era Prince was channeling a Jimi Hendrix vibe. Notice his wardrobe at the time the ruffled shirts just like Hendrix wore. The guy said EVH, maybe but definitely more Hendrix style of playing, and yes for some reason Prince is always overlooked for his guitar playing...
There’s more amazing songs that he made the guitar sing other than doves cry. Listen to something in the water
Prince was one of the top echelon guitarists. A virtuoso, through and through.
No. He was very good. Let’s not get carried away.
Saw Prince once and his guitar playing blew my mind. I had heard Peach and She's Always in My Hair but to hear him live was awesome. His extended guitar solo for Purple Rain matched Eddie or any other Rock Guitarist.
Have you seen him blow everyone from the stage doing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"?
The GREATEST recording artist & musician of this entire lifetime.......
It’s fascinating to me that Prince is underrated as a guitarist. His rhythm chops are among the best to ever do it and his lead playing is right there as well. His overall musicianship is on full display with every note.
Witness to a pivotal moment in musical history,I mean that wailing psychedelic guitar intro, and that beat on When Doves Cry...
It was the guitar that made me pay attention to Prince, way back. Prince flowed beautifully live on the guitar tracks, as good as the Jeff Becks and SRV's.
I’ve driven by this building a million times and I always think of Prince laying it down behind those walls!!!
My favorite album of all time. I could hear this all day.
Love Dweezil’s comments on how Prince’s guitar playing on ‘When Doves Cry” is unlike his guitar style on any of his other songs. As a longtime Prince fan I’ve felt the same way from the first time I heard the song in 1984. It’s by far my favorite guitar solo of his. Wish someone had the story on this.
You could add "Bambi" and "Temptation" to that too. He didn't use a full out rock guitar style very often, but when he did you definitely felt it.
@@jlv3x I think his solo on Doves is a whole ‘nother level from Bambi (or Temptation). Way more intricate.
Have you heard Just My Imagination - Paard van Troje, Den Haag 1988? On studio records, Temptation is a great showcase of his guitar playing.
No guitar player underestimates his guitar playing. He is in the top 10 ever easily.
top 30 maybe
But guitar is not a hard instrument. Now violin.....
Oh my God!
The 'guitar' magazines were very ridiculing of Prince.I remember that they took the piss at the time, mid 80's onwards.Racist, definitely.
@@StratsRUs it's because he stays in the basic pentatonic usually. He composes great solos and melodies but if you watch how he solo's live he repeats a lot of the same things.

Dimension, not planet.
I would love to hear the overstuffed Doves before he started pulling tracks out. Seems like it could be really interesting.
I think he's performed that version during the lovesexy tour. Had the bass in it and more
I think if you listen to the densest parts of Lovesexy you get an inkling of that overproduced feeling.
I always wondered if that was the ACTUAL bassline. He did that walking bassline on both the SOTT and Lovesexy tours
Yup
Me too
My favorite all time Prince song
It was his finest moment. Incredible.
It may be his greatest song. An absolute masterpiece.
I remember hearing snippets of sum of the songs from the Purple Rain soundtrack months before it was released and wasn’t impressed. But the minute I heard WDC It blew me away. Of course after the movie hit it breathe new life into those songs and I was sold.
I watched the video of Prince playing last in a tribute to George Harrison. He had never played better and some of his chords and techniques blew the minds of Tom Petty, Harrison’s Grandson and the other guitar players standing with him in the semi-circle. You know you are seeing, and hearing, a gift from God in those moments. He passed away shortly after that performance. RIP Prince
Dhani Harrison is George Harrison's son, not grandson and the performance in question is from the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. Prince passed away in 2016, so not "shortly after".
the most mind-blowing thing in that performance is the disappearing guitar
@@abnzg The guitar disappeared only because it went out of camera view. Prince often tossed his guitar into the air for his techie to catch.
The original video was a few seconds longer. Prince tossed his guitar and walk off the stage, probably to his waiting car, and Dhani Harrison could be heard to say "Where's Prince? I wanna give him a big hug", so it was the case of the disappearing Prince.
Those few seconds were cut and Dhani said in interviews that he was not impressed by Prince's immature behaviour that night.
I think we all know he was lying.
3:33 seems here Zappa is trying to insinuate that Prince copied EVHs sound. If you are familiar with Prince, he had a rock guitar sound in his music from the first album.
i been a lifelong frank zappa fan....but dweezil you were way off the mark....prince was a fucking legend of a guitar player, show sum respect ..prince was natural ..rip prince and rip frank...man imagine if those 2 cats had got it together and just put out sum shit...wow that woulda been somethin else.

Prince LOVED to stretch out in instrumental jams, but I think someone in the 'pop' world may hav said something to Him along the lines of.. "instrumentals are boring." It haunted Him, I think.
he has SO many records that are instrumental only records: C-Note, N.E.W.S., Xpectation, Kamasutra. ua-cam.com/video/84iw2fiAc_E/v-deo.html
that would be the n.e.w.s album and loring park sessions. could be more i dont know.

PRINCE is a genius pure and simple. He had talent enough for twenty people. I am glad that Peggy didnt let them get her off track with that Van Halen bull shit, PRINCE would have been proud of her and that she represented him well.
I feel like the reason I never noticed that it doesn’t have a bass is that the drums combined with his deep voice that’s used in a rhythmic cadence, it almost feels like a bass at least to my untrained ear. Either way, it’s a damn musical masterpiece.
I remember hearing Doves for the first time on college radio. Full version. Blew my mind.
Prince was an awesome guitarist. Some would disagree, but I think there was a lot of Hendrix in Prince's playing. He does a fill in "Purple Rain" the song in the third verse and I thought...THAAAAAAT'S HENDRIX.
More Santana than Jimi
The solo in Purple Rain is, in my opinion, the most incredible ever. Melodic and beautiful infused with woeful screams from his guitar. Incredible! Listen to the E-Street Band version to appreciate it even more.
Oh, Peggy.
If you remember on the Prince 1999 super deluxe edition, on the International Lover/Studio Take, he says “I’m an international lover/baby you can be my bet/guaranteed to keep you wet (get that Peggy?). Yes, that Peggy.

thats not prince, thats jesse johnson. prince did write that song 777-9311, but jesse actually played guitar on the recording.
DUDE EXACTLY.,...HE HAD SONGS ON ALL HIS ALBUMS EXTENDED VERSIONS FROM THE 70s EARLY 80s. HE HAD 12 INCH DANCE VERSIONS, B SIDES. HE HAD SONGS WITH THE TIME AND VANITY 6 THAT HAD GUITAR THAT HE PLAYED ALL THE INSTRUMENTS ON. THAT WAS SO, AO FAR OFF BASE. ALSO HE FAILS TO REALIZE HENDRIX AND ERNIE ISLEY HAD THAT SOUND BEFORE VAN HALEN SMH... AS A GUITAR PLAYER HE SHOULD KNOW BETTER!!
Listen to Get It Up 1981 by The Time. Prince wrote, produced, played on it incl. a guitar solo & did backing vocals and you can hear him so clearly....let me do your love!💜
This entire interview felt like Dweezil just looking for another chance to ask yet another VH question. Jeez Dweezil, knock it the hell off!
The sparse lean Prince is the best. Love it.
When Doves Cry is my favourite of all his songs. One of those unique "out there" songs like Walk On The Wild Side or Rock On.
I always felt this song was basically acapella which made it all that more awesome....I'd would really love to here the fully orchestrated version. It should have been one of many other tracks on PR deluxe.
I love hearing his old school stuff, alternative versions, live stuff but when the heck r we going to get something we never heard before!!! Dam, we have been waiting long enough already!!!
Yes I miss him he was best rest peace my prince for every
He figured out less is more. The spaces in between the drums and the notes were still filled with effects. Even his mouth noises filled in. The sound of the whole record combined with compression from FM radio made it SO HUGE sounding when I was a teen and a late-bloomer Prince fan. It took him 6 chess moves (6 albums) to catch up to Michael Jackson. Salute to Peggy.

He was so very underrated,
it was Let's Go Crazy that sealed the deal with many including me..but this one over time has proven to be some of his finest guitar work. Even though like LRC this had to grow on me as a fan... it's one of the ones I continue to return to and hear it as if I was hearing it for the first time... funny I never noticed that there was no bass untill I read somewhere that the bass was missing ... Sign of a great song and how Prince was so right knowing there was no need for it. When the Revolution did it live with bass it's almost as if it looses it impact. He should have given Brown Mark a keyboard for that one. lol
I do not think Prince was ever underrated, he always had lots of admirers amongst musicians. Prince was not just a guitarist like Van Halen or Paco de Lucia, he was the whole package. Everything he did, he did in an unique way on a high and special level
@@najinelson6742 Underrated by the public
@@julienceaser I d rather say by people who focus on guitar first and foremost. Prince was not only a guitarist, he was a multi-instrumentalist and multi talent and the best guitarist for his music, because through a guitar solo he could express his inner feelings and soul and led a song to its climax. It makes no sense to compare Prince to guitarists like Paco de Lucia, Al di Meola, Django or Joe Pass. These people were guitarists and composers "only", different focus. No one of these people would have played a solo better than Prince on Prince's songs. They are all great guitarists and no one is the best guitarist ever. And if you listened to interviews with Terry Lewis, Jimmy Jam, Morris Day etc you would know that Prince was considered a great guitarist already in his early years. Jimmy Jam: "He could immediately play everything on guitar with some amazing expression and adding his own flavor. Along with the great stories of artists I enjoy listening to the engineering side as well having a home studio. Thing that sucks about recording yourself is having nobody at the driver seat 😵
When Doves Cry is the most well disguised song ever made...the content drove his vocals and his guitar playing on that track...it was so over produced and over the top because thats the feeling he was trying to convey..."Maybe I'm just like father you know h'es to bold" "Maybe I'm just like my mother she's never satisfied"
The man was brilliant THE END
Bodied up.
People always go on and on about the bass being gone but he had many songs without bass before that.
Now I want to hear the overproduced version!
Someone asked eric clapton what its like to be the greatest guitarist in the world he replied "i dont know, ask Prince."
The guy asking about "what inspired that" doesn't understand how real genius works, especially a performance and compositional genius like The Artist. He didn't need a "conscious idea" to tell him what to do or why to do it. It was all internal, the result of technical mastery and creative genius. It simply IS, like a volcano or a lightning bolt. Its Being is its Function.
I remember being in high school trying to transcribe this song and realizing there was no bass. I almost didn't believe it, wondering if it was just low in the mix. Listened for it many times. It takes courage to entirely pull the bass out from a track. Who does that?

Great insights. I feel like she didn’t really answer the question about the guitar intro though. Billy Gibbons once asked Prince about that intro and he just said “that’s a secret” or something like that. Lol
Yep, it was a Dan Rather interview Billy did where he said he walked into a club in New York shortly after the Princes’ epic RRHOF performance. Billy said he was caught off guard by Princes guitar abilities and that Prince burned that stage DOWN!! He added Prince if he could tech Billy the intro to When Doces Cry, and Prince said he came upon it by accident and they could go try to learn it together, and both of them laughed! Billy said he never knew Prince was a guitarist up until the RRHOF. Billy said he considered Prince a world class entertainer, singer, dancer, producer, but not a guitarist. He said that lol changed once he witnessed Prince at the RRHOF jam session!! He said Prince was a Prince! Rest In Peace Prince
