This song hit different now. I'll never listen to this song the same way again. My husband was hospitalized with Covid when he slipped into a coma and his condition seemed to worsen by the hour. I was on the phone with the doctor and I asked, " Doctor...tell me the truth...will my husband make it out of this?" She said," Honestly, he'll be lucky if he makes it through the night. He was already diabetic and had congestive heart failure. I was in the middle of doing some housework and I literally almost fainted when she said that. I played Purple Rain while I attempted to finish my cleaning. Then suddenly a wave rushed over me, and I burst into tears. I knew he was gone. He coded 3 times that night, and on the 4th heart attack, he couldn't be resuscitated. He died at 2 am, on August 28th, 24 days after our anniversary. My world was shattered and my heart was broken into pieces. He died in 2020, it's been 2 years....and I'm still struggling with the grief, loss, and heartache. I miss him every day, hour, and minute. I stay strong for our 5 daughters, but some days the pain is unbearable and I break down in the quiet stillness of the night when I'm alone in my bed. So this song holds a special place in my heart. It was the moment I knew he was no longer with us and I had to let go. I miss him so much and I'm still trying to figure out how to adjust to life without him. He'll always be the love of my life. I appreciate the life and love we shared, and I look forward to seeing my baby in the purple rain. Thank you Prince, for creating this amazing love ballad that became a beautiful but bittersweet memory and soundtrack to the end of my husband's life. I'll see you both standing underneath that purple rain when I get to Heaven💔😙

Most people don't understand the difficulty of this song. It's written in Bb Major, but it's crying and begging like a minor scale. Incredibly hard to do. One of the best songs ever written.

I will never forget, my Dad ordered this concert on pay per view for me, in 1999. It's all I wanted and I got it. I sat and watched and enjoyed it alone. I was 14. Best New Years Eve ever.

This is one of the best songs ever produced. It is composed in Bb major, the chords progression is absurdly complex and beautiful, through time the melody enters your mind and soul. Only an angel could produce something like that, after all, but it was Prince. Maybe he was an angel too. Rest in heaven, legend.

I think the fact it’s easy to improvise for a guitar player doesn’t mean it’s simple. I like to play this song, but I can’t play the same way he does. It’s too much :))

Lots of renditions just go to A major, ala Just Like Heaven LOL. At least mere mortals can play it. Tim Reynolds electric band TR3 does a pretty good version.
That performance was beyond words. Also the way he directs the band while performing is impressive.
To the people who were present when this was recorded, you witnessed arguably one of the greatest live performances of all time. What an absolute privilege to have been there.

Everytime I hear the first second of Purple Rain whether album or live version... chills literally run through my body. And once Prince play’s his famous guitar solo... goosebumps begin to show and the feel of tears begin to fill my eyes. Prince, among so many late great legends no matter what they do whether it’s music, sports, acting.... have left a unbelievable mark in many of our lives. I'm a new Prince fan. i just discovered his music. the first time I saw the Brits award Purple Rain performance I cried out of nowhere. His music changed me and touched my soul. He is a true genius and the emotions in his music transcends time and dimensions these were not just mere melodies but very otherworldly spiritual as well. He is a very highly spiritual person and an amazingly genius musician. He is a very old soul indeed. Prince's music changed me forever. RIP legend.

If u haven't seen his super bowl half-time performance (2007) on purple rain then you should drop everything in hand and just watch that performance. It was magical. I’ll never forget the day I saw on the news that Prince was gone. In the following days, the newscasters on my local station all wore purple, the Eiffel Tower was bathed in purple light as was the Golden Gate Bridge . Around the world purple was ever present. The proof that he was truly going to be missed but never forgotten. 2016 was a year that we lost so many talented musicians, we finally understood what it sounds like “when doves cry”. Rest In Peace Prince and all those that crossed over with you.

But truthfully, bending notes while running blues scales that any decent guitarist player can play in their sleep to relatively simplistic chord patterns doesn’t make you an extraordinary guitarist. He was talented, innovative, and a great entertainer, but not some musical deity/guitar God.

I can definitely tell Prince was a very godly man. He's up there playing that guitar and singing purple rain for God and Jesus. He was an amazing person and singer he is definitely missed and gone from us way to soon. Prayers and comfort to his family.

He wasn't the best at anything. It's less of a knock against him and more of a fact. He was the best Prince though. Many try to be like him, but no one can be the next. He was one of a kind.

To say he plays with passion would be a huge understatement.
Miss him so much . Growing up with Prince and Michael Jackson was so special . There are many great artist but those two brothas were sent from another dimension. Thank God for youtube cause you guys would not be able to relive it for yourselves . Seen them both live and both were like having an outer body experience. You just couldn't believe a human being could be so talented. To think that MTV initially did not want to air these men is crazy .

yes, yes and yes :) Words can't describe the feeling. I saw Prince live twice and it was like being high on the most beautiful drug lol. Even though I got to see him live it wasn't enough and Michael... I never got to see him live :'( Still heartbroken about that. I'd give anything to back in time and just live in their concerts. I try to comfort myself by being reminding myself and being thankful that I lived in their time and that we got to have them for as long as we did

Was in San Francisco the year he passed away, I was attending a Forum and when I walked out there was a different feeling in the air, the kind that gives you that weird feeling, then I noticed 100s of people dancing to his songs which was played on big ass speakers. I just joined them and listened to his songs until someone told me he passed away.
No matter how many times I hear this version; I always hear his guitar speaking to us. Prince opened his entire soul into THIS moment; which not even he could ever duplicate. The raw emotional experience of life are in both solos.

I've been thinking about Prince alot lately (his life and passing) I just can't get over what an enormous loss it was. He had so much to live for and his talent was unmeasureable. Sometimes I play my drums to Prince's music with headphones and pretend I'm playing drums for Prince! I can always dream. RIP 🙏
When I make clothing for myself, especially things I might wear to an event coming up at PP, I ALWAYS think of how cool it would be for him to say 'I want that!' I always wanted to design for him and work there and tried in the 90s.

👏 As a 70ish y.o. who grew up with Prince, I’ve 💖’d this song since it was 1st released! From ALL the years of his different performances, imo THIS is the best live one I’ve come across to date! It’s in a different, unique emotional style than most of the others I’ve watched/heard, and more emotionally touching.

Just left Paisley Park last week. My husband sent me for an early birthday gift. That was the most tortured tour i had been on. Just to know you walked where Prince walked, saw all the memorabilia he was noted for, saw his costumes, went to the concert hall, sat in the club, saw the doves, saw his cars, motorcycles from Purple Rain. If you are a true fan that tour took you to another place. I've been with Prince since Soft and Wet and that's a mighty long time. Rest in Power. You are dearly missed.😢
