Seriously the BEST helpful r10 video out there. No one is as detailed, and as a very beginner I appreciated it so much. Uhmmmm…….however. this was sold to me as a BEGINNER camera. Like wtf! This is NOT a beginner camera. Nope. Nope. Nope. How can they say this is for beginners?!!! The ONLY thing I remembered from photography class in high school in 1975 is how to hold the camera! So, maybe people may surmise I know what I’m doing. I don’t. 😂
I did not pause or walk away. Jared was very impressive at drawing my attention, and his guidance was very detailed. My R10 hasn't been delivered yet, but as soon as I unbox it and turn it on, I'll be ready to shoot like a pro because of this amazing guide. Thank you, Jared.
1:11:15 - Release shutter w/o lens - you said this isn't useful, but it is necessary for attaching the camera without a lens to a telescope for astrophotography.
26:13 - probably should have talked about it, as it distinguishes more advanced cameras and was never included in cheap DSLRs. Nice having it here. Can save you in many cases. Say, if you shoot with 50mm, you don't want the shutter speed be lower than at least 1\100s at any times (to avoid shake), so you set this particular option to 1\125s and camera can go higher (shorter exposure), but not lower (longer). You're safe. The same with birds, e.g. I usually put the minimum to 1\1000 and let the camera shorten it if the light allows.
#gotthisfar Thank you for the video. It was a great help. I am new to the camera world. I was waiting for you r7 video, this will work it just a few more features. What is your recommended Micro HDMI cable for these camera? What is the one you are using in this video?
40 mins in and I want to buy this camera :) I have not come across a more fun and detailed guide to using your camera before. Awesome, thank you so much.
Thank you for ALL you do. Especially for those of us that are brand new to the world of cameras. I discovered you when I purchased a Nikon D7500 last year. I am now selling it after purchasing the R10 yesterday. I could not wait to watch your tutorial for this camera. Please keep up the great work! 🤙
Question: I wanted the Nikon D7500 but at the last minute bought the canon R10 instead. As you've moved from the D7500 to R10 are you glad you did? Was it an upgrade or a side step?
26:18 - *actually pretty handy* . Yes, hardly usable in original format, but you can convert it to JPEG right in camera and get a nice boost in dynamic range not having to shoot real HDR (no three shots in a raw loosing time, disturbing surrounding and waiting for it frozen for several seconds to stitch into one). HEIF simply substitutes JPEG and shoots instantaneously, of which you can get HDR JPEG later. Tested it on R6 and it works.
Thanks for a great video...been a pentax user for over 20 years and I purchased this for my niece but I wanted to run through the menu system so I can teach her...wow what a great video. So much stuff to learn...I might now even finally get my first mirroless thinking of getting the R6ii.
I thought it would be important to mention that color space only affects JPEGs (not raw), but it also affects the histogram (since it is based on the JPEG). Since Adobe color space has a wider gamut you will get a slightly different histogram (more precise).
Well, I've been shooting since 1984, a vivid hobbyist, and have this camera as my travel companion along with 1Dx or R5. Many wide angle shots are awesome using the flip screen especially if you want to keep the camera lower to the ground looking up, or closer to the water body etc. so I don't have to lie down on the ground at this age to take that shot. Therefore, I don't agree when you say only novice use flip screen to take photos, professionals do too for various interesting angles. Good review, thanks.
I know i'm late to this party, and this may be old information, but I managed to find a good use for the control lock button! There is a setting for what locks and doesn't with this lock on. I set everything to be untouched except for the touchscreen. No more worrying about changing settings inadvertently when i'm gripping the camera wrong at a weird angle LOL
Thank you so much for going over all the ‘simple’ or ‘obvious’ details!! As an absolute beginner and needed them! After this video I feel educated, confident, and excited to start shooting. Thank you for making these videos❤❤
Thank you Jared. That is the most detailed and exceptionally clear user’s guide for my R10, or any camera, and it helped me greatly. Even though I am an experienced amateur photographer, the extensive and ever increasing menus have seemed challenging until now. You have helped me immensely to understand the menu functions and now I can make changes with good understanding. Thank you. Cheers.
30:51 - not exactly fair. You don't have to shoot with FXs, but can apply later. Grainy b\w is very good looking as a preset, fish-eye at lowest setting (only) is usable too if you don't have fish-eye lens and shoot at particular angle, but the most fun is miniature. It really works. Just shoot from very high above (say, high-storey building) and apply the effect. You'd be amazed how realistic to miniature it looks (and I shot real miniatures, so experienced to compare). All the other effects are totally useless imo (although I used Toy Camera few times on IG).
A comment re metering modes. Whilst it is correct to say that mirrorless cameras simulate exposure in the viewfinder, so the shooter can see if a shot is exposed correctly (more or less) it is still important to use a metering mode appropriate to the subject, especially if shooting sports. There simply isn't time to fiddle with exposure for every shot, or even between shots in some cases, because the shot opportunity can be lost in the blink of an eye. Think of a motocross bike appearing suddenly over a jump, against a bright sky, then the shooter wants to follow the bike into a subsequent turn, in shadow. Using the most appropriate metering mode (sometimes a compromise) is vital if you're going to maintain a good keeper rate.
Just purchased this camera and this video is exactly what I needed to know all these settings. Very thorough and covered everything the camera can do. I will be saving this video and definitely be referring back to it again. Yes I watched it right to the end.
#GotThisFar Can't believe how much info was jammed into this video. I don't feel like I'm missing anything in the menus now. This is a great place to get started with the R10. Wasn't sure I bought the right camera for my situation but this beast has it all... Thanks Jared.
These videos are great. To they naysayers out there, these guides may not be for everyone right now, but they will serve a purpose for years to come. Earlier this year I watched Jared's guide to the EOS R in order to set up the camera I use at my then-new job. In the span of a few hours, I was able to set up the camera to function properly to use for product photography. Had I had to rely only on the manual, I'd still be tweaking the camera.
Well I just purchased this r10 and I will receive it next week and so thank you for this walkthrough through the menu I am ready to use my camera already but I suffered through the entire video and I love how you flew through the ending on the video part because I was getting tired too.
Now that the R10 has been out for a while, would people recommend it as a good all-around camera? Family vacations, indoors shots, wildlife, portraits, etc? Is there anything that it just doesn't do well? My current camera is a T1i so I'm guessing it's leaps and bounds ahead of it...
33:10 you are wrong about "Long exp. noise reduction". It is not noise correction like in Lightroom. Instead Camera takes two pictures: normal and "dark frame". Dark frame is for catch hot pixels etc. Next two frames are substracted and you will have picture without hot pixels.
On 45:53 Movie rec size I only have 4k 25.00P, FHD 50.00P and FHD 25.00P, not as the video shown on his camera such as FHD 29.97P and FHD 23.98P. Can someone tell me why ?

I've used Sony Tough 128 GB SD cards for years. In my R5, my Ricoh GRIII, and now my R7. (And my previous cameras). They are fast, and in my experience reliable.
Thanks your video nice presentation’ for the new beginners’ I got the EOS R10 .. God Bless idol … 😊 watching in Macau 🇲🇴 🎉 How the extra cover for the Lens 18-150
Some of the suggestions made in this are horrible for beginners. Turning off Chromatic Aberration and Lens Distortion data in RAW is just silly, if you leave them enabled, it embeds the metadata in the CR3 RAW file so that you have the option later in DPP to turn it on, leaving it on does NOT automatically mess with your image, RAW is RAW is RAW, it is RAW sensor data, if you turn it off and shoot JPEG only, your JPEGs will have distortion and CA, permanently. I am sure everyone appreciates your effort to help guide them on how to set a camera up, but some of the settings you need to review carefully to see what they actually do, consulting the manual is incredibly helpful in these scenarios.
#GoThisFar - Jared, thanks this really helped me understand some of the settings. I actually wrote down all the settings in Notepad and listed the ones you changed. I have only been shooting for a few years. Your explanations were great, the Light meter was something I did not know about. FYI, I shoot with some old manual FL lenses from my Dad with an adapter. You have to set the "Release Shutter W/O lens - on" to ON to take pictures with these manual lenses. The camera does not know they are attached as they are not electronic. (You asked yourself why would you want this setting on?? In the video :) ) The manual lenses helped me learn faster as they don't have any help with focus or aperture, it is all on you. Thanks again your videos are great. I will be buying your presets when I get to the Lightroom stage.

Really, really useful video! A big thank you from a total beginner!
I love this video, and I think that it was very helpful for people (including me, a fairly experienced photographer) in setting up a new camera. However, I was a bit bothered by a few statements you made that felt like gatekeeping. There was implication that REAL photographers always shoot manual, and don't use auto ISO. I am aware of many successful photographers who, on the contrary, use Av, Tv, or auto ISO because it suits their genres and styles of photography. I also love the idea of sometimes using picture style modes and JPEG to push myself creatively by limiting myself to B&W or 1:1 aspect ratio. Let people do art their way, and don't make them feel like a fake because you do it differently. tldr: The video was very helpful and overall great, but I disagree with a few comments that judge some people's creative methodology.
Love your in depth for beginners but one small error on the info for the AV and TV settings. They do not automatically select the ISO unless set to auto ISO, TV will change only the aperture automatically and AV the shutter speed automatically. I know that’s a genuine mistake and easily done. Rock.on 👍
⚠️ I recently bought Canon R10 but I noticed that there's 23.976 fps and 59.94 fps and 29.97 fpsin both 4K and HD formats. I am only seeing 25 fps and 50 fps in both 4K and HD. What's the reason? Can any explain please? Thanks in advance!!
Got this far! Amazing video. I feel ready to explore my camera. I currently have an 18-150mm lens and my focus is street photography. What lens is the most practicalfor me to get next?
Can someone explain to me why i don’t have all the settings featured in this video? For example when i go to menu and go to Movie rec. size i only get 4k 25.00 fhd50005 and fhd2500p. Why is that can someone explain?
I got to the end. I'm trying to decide from among R10, or R7, or R 8. It does not seem I'd sacrifice much by buying the R10. I'm old and slow-moving and don't cover sports. -- BAK --
I am new to the Canon world after using the Nikon D70 and D700 for over 20 years. I would like to utilize the C1 and C2 modes. Is there a video that goes through the set up of these modes step by step?
This guide was great, learned a few things I didn't know from previous videos or guides. The preview AF thing was driving me absolutely bananas so I'm really glad I am able to turn that off.
I have a question about the Photo Live View on my R10. I have it in the FV mode and above the Auto Shutter Speed I have a box that has ES on it. What is this telling me? Another question the I have the EXP.SIM box, but next to it is a box that looks like a truck and underneath the object shows OFF with a hand pointing to the object. What is this and what needs to be done? Thank you for the excellent video.
Thanks for the vedio. I am Not a professional and not ameture,in between! Your explanation, though a little bit speedy for non English speaking guys like me,is fantastic. Own an R10.
In my old D70 I could hold down the shutter button and shoot lots of frames p/second and choose the best photo. How do I do this with the R10. Do I have to set it to SERVO mode and then press down the shutter until I'm done or jam the buffer?
I am really enjoying your tutorial. Being a total newbie, I am learning a lot from you already. I do have one question. Any idea why I can only get one image on the playback button, but the images do show up in the timing speed button.
It may be in there as a group if you took holding the shutter down together. If so click on the image and then scroll left and right to see the others.
Jared, I need to disable the Flash button in the cross keys, where the Set button resides. Too often, my "Thenar region" (fat section under the thumb)of my right hand depresses the Flash button, in the midst of shooting, and my external flash gets disconnected. Aggravating! Please help me with a solution, thank you!.
"AF-assist beam firing"...I leave this on...why?...because I shoot allot of proms and when the subjects are on the dance floor and happen to see this beam they know I am pointing the cam at them and they will react. When I have it off they have no idea I am pointing the cam at them. I want to "distract them" and look at the camera.
Hi Jared, I want to get the Canon R10 however was wondering about the small buffer issue? Can you set the R10 to take for example 8 photos a second, and get a longer time photographing without hitting the buffer at the vital moment. Would you say this is a good option, or should I just get the R7 [budget is an issue] Thanks for all your videos they help me so much!
#GotThisFar Just picked up this camera pre-owned at our local camera store and this was a great review of the features and how to quickly get up and running with it.
Have somehow got a screen showing on the digital screen on my camera that shows all the information on my settings eg the TV setting. I can not get it turned off

Thanks, that did strike me as weird as a newbie. Any other things you saw?
Honestly, not a whole lot, overall he covered basically everything else nicely @@Not_Qwake 🙂
What are the major differences between the R6 & R10 settings ?
Notice Canon: Please release the Canon R10 MK II with dual SD card slots. Thank you.

Get an R7
not sure what i like more, the content or your hair
thanks for the awesome video and explanation!
super lesson, learned some cool features and tips
Thanks Jarod, very helpful, will watch again in a couple of weeks.
Awesome video. Beginner here so appreciate this greatly.
Grazie mille, ho comprato questa fantastica fotocamera ed ora posso finalmente seguire un tutorial. Grazie
Many thanks. Able to set up my new camera now with relative ease.
Love your in depth for beginners but one small error on the info for the AV and TV settings. They do not automatically select the ISO unless set to auto ISO, TV will change only the aperture automatically and AV the shutter speed automatically. I know that’s a genuine mistake and easily done. Rock.on 👍
Thanks for the in depth video! It was extremely informative to a newcomer.
I have a R10 canon which lens needs to buy a extra for sports and wild animal __ please be advised thx EF or STM
Can someone explain to me why i don’t have all the settings featured in this video? For example when i go to menu and go to Movie rec. size i only get 4k 25.00 fhd50005 and fhd2500p. Why is that can someone explain?
I’m having the same issue rn, have you figured it out?
Mee too, some help?
I got to the end. I'm trying to decide from among R10, or R7, or R 8. It does not seem I'd sacrifice much by buying the R10. I'm old and slow-moving and don't cover sports. -- BAK --
Thank you for explaining and sharing
Did you know that you can jump from one menu group to next by pressing the [Q] button?
#gotthisfar
#gotthisfar - just upgraded from a T3i to an R10 - wanted to make sure I had everything set up correctly
Great info. Very helpful!!
#gotthisfar thanks for the video! New r10 owner here 😊
hey I just recently started following you and I must say your videos are super informative and FUN at the same time. Love your humour haha!
Just bought my R10. This video was great. You are AWESOME! Let me gon head and hit that subscribe button.
Just picked up the R10, great video. Thanks Jared! Liked and subscribed. #GotThisFar
Thanks for the vedio. I am Not a professional and not ameture,in between! Your explanation, though a little bit speedy for non English speaking guys like me,is fantastic. Own an R10.
thank you for this video. learned much more than reading the manual
#got this far. Great video thanks. Im all set up now & ready to go out shooting
Why should we format the card ? Should it be done in the camera ?
New buyer here, and this is my user guide.
Thank you, great information. My second time viewing this video.
I am hoping you will do an update video when the R10 Mk II comes out in a couple of months.
In my old D70 I could hold down the shutter button and shoot lots of frames p/second and choose the best photo. How do I do this with the R10. Do I have to set it to SERVO mode and then press down the shutter until I'm done or jam the buffer?
Thank you for this video. #Gotthisfar!
Is there an option to edit your file names directly on the camera itself?
this was actually a very helpful video. I know it's time consuming but very helpful. canon should pay you...nikon and Sony as well.
I have various Duracell batteries for my EOS 2000D and they last even longer than the standard ones
These user guide videos are so fucking incredible and will help people for years to come
Any chance we'll see an R7 Users Guide?

YAS 😁
I figured the R7 isn't too far behind. I want to see how similar my configuration is to how Jared would run his.

@@froknowsphoto I just finished watching it, thanks Jared!
Very nice and usefull video. But why can't I pay Fropack3 with iDeal or by bank?
My question is should I buy the R10 or the R7. I photograph almost only landscapes and animals (and rarely the animals are human)
get R
Jared, I need to disable the Flash button in the cross keys, where the Set button resides. Too often, my "Thenar region" (fat section under the thumb)of my right hand depresses the Flash button, in the midst of shooting, and my external flash gets disconnected. Aggravating!
Please help me with a solution, thank you!.
Why when charging the official it doesn’t appear to change for a long time, can you throw any light on this please
Thanks so much, good job 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Hmm, my aperature wheel and shutter were opposite of yours :)
Just got an R10 this week as a beginner, this guide is so amazing thank you! #gotthisfar
Thankyou
"AF-assist beam firing"...I leave this on...why?...because I shoot allot of proms and when the subjects are on the dance floor and happen to see this beam they know I am pointing the cam at them and they will react. When I have it off they have no idea I am pointing the cam at them. I want to "distract them" and look at the camera.
Thanks for this guide !
I was waiting for this video!!! Thank you so much 😊
Hi Jared, I want to get the Canon R10 however was wondering about the small buffer issue?
Can you set the R10 to take for example 8 photos a second, and get a longer time photographing without hitting the buffer at the vital moment. Would you say this is a good option, or should I just get the R7 [budget is an issue] Thanks for all your videos they help me so much!
Get the R
#GotThisFar Just picked up this camera pre-owned at our local camera store and this was a great review of the features and how to quickly get up and running with it.
I have this same camera but it only has options 1-5 under this mode as yours has 10 why would that be ?
first comment 🤩.... waiting for this camera
