Great video , spot on what you are saying! I find it hard for any roller purdy ect to beat the Hamilton perfection such a good roller. I used the Wooster microfiber and that’s also good on interior walls . 12” is a perfect size for most my work . I tried Wooster red feather rollers today for rolling interior flush doors and they seem pretty decent . Hope to get “ two fussy blokes” rollers soon to try out as ment to leave a “spray finish”

Purdy sleeves are ok but not as good as the hammys for finish imo....the roller poles that have their own quick locking system are great when they work....meaning they can be a little temperamental...not what you expect for the price. Even the extending roller arm used to have issues until they recently improved the locking clips

    G,day from Sydney Australia.
Thankyou for explaining the current rollers used in the industry. The nine and fifteen inch with end caps.
    * The micro fibre is a new product for me and I look forward to seeing the results in the vertical and horizontal building surfaces.
Some really great tips of the trade such as nap lengths hold superior paint holding.
I like the Purdy equipment, hands down. I have never used tray liners, and with environment and pollution control these will be used.
Q1. How long would you have a wet roller in a bucket of water?
    A. Just over lunch
    B. Over night
    C. Wrap it in plastic
    D. Wash it out at the end of the day.
    Thanks once again!

I use 18" nearly all the time for ceilings and walls , i like Arroworthy and Fossa microfibre sleeves i prefer the Wooster adjustable arm to the Purdy though , seems much more robust , i use a 4 or 6.5" Arroworthy microfibre for rolling off cut ins and the good thing about them is they have roller fabric on the end of the sleeve so can roll internal corners without the need to brush them in. The only time i use a 9" nowadays is on doors . Keep the vids coming bud , good stuff.👍

I use the express yellow lambs wool, they last long, hold a good amount of paint and clean up super easy but the stipple isn't the greatest. Then there's rollers that leave an excellent finish like the oldfields pro range but those just don't hold enough paint. How do you reckon these microfibre would compare to say a 12mm lambswool on paint pickup and useful life of the sleeve?

    • @JoeProDecor
      @JoeProDecor  4 роки тому

Lambs wool will obviously be long lasting as you say, but with rollers , you can't have it both ways really with pick up and finish. A short pile leaves the best finish with the least pick up, and a long pile holds the most paint but has the worst finish(in general) ...so thsts why a medium pile roller is a popular choice. A good balance between finish and pick up

    • @JoeProDecor
      @JoeProDecor  Рік тому +1

You can get away with it on the right jobs suppose....you have to apply more pressure and spread it more because the bigger nap generally holds more paint....but on smoother surfaces it's easier to get a flatter finish with a,shorter pile......especially with modern paints like acrylic durables ect......that dry faster and leave the texture

    • @JoeProDecor

Hi Mick, no I've not come across anything to be honest. I just scrape as much excess paint from the sleeve using my 5 in 1 tool, then rinse it through until clean water runs through. Takes me around 5 minutes.
If I have multiple rollers to clean, I generally remove excess paint, do a short rinse and leave to soak while I'm putting gear away.... Then give them a rinse for a further couple of minutes.

The Axus decor sleeves sre fantastic for textured surfaces as they hold alot of paint...but i did not rate the medium pile on smooth surfaces because of that reason....they dont lay off the paint evenly at the start and require more spreading out to get a half decent finish, which doesnt compare to the finish of a hamilton in my opinion.

Hi Mate, I just bought a Harrison semi smooth roller to test on an old plaster wall i sanded and cleaned down. I am trying to practice because a decorator screwed me over and done a poor job in some areas. I am dead scared to do the real thing and I am using a cheap roller tray with a ramp, but I am really struggling at the moment to get the technique down.
I needed to seal the test area wall as in a mist coat, watered down some cheap Matt Emulsion from The Range 3 parts matt paint to 1 part water (don't even know if this is correct either and I am not too good at the measurement side of things since its a small wall)
The roller seems to give a weird texture. I really don't know what i am doing to be honest and the decorating costed me a lot of money for what he did. I can't get him back and he is ignoring me so I have no choice to try and tackle it myself. Any help from fellow decorators here and JoePro would be great. It's a really frustrating time and situation to be in.
I have crown clean extreme in this new bedroom that I was going to be moving into and office space. He left flashing and picture framing patches on walls and now because it's a scrubbable matt class 1, it should retain the finish after rigorous cleaning which is what Crown claims and stands by. Now when you clean the walls it leaves shiny patches but only on the white paint (I have two other colours). Chipped paint from other trades, dings and nicks were not filled. So I need to sort that all out.
I just don't think im loading the roller correctly or is the tray ramp crap? Seems to sorta spin and sometimes can't get the roller to roll back and forth in the tray. Kind like clumping up. Probably have the wrong gear and technique. Cheers! great video thanks for the help

Those types of durable matt paints(the ones that are slightly more stain resistant and have slightly more sheen level even though they are still matt) have a, tenancy to flash in certain colours.... Cutting in and laying the cutting in with a mi I roller helps eliminate picture framing. Flashing over certain fillers can be eliminated by pricing the fuliller first with thinned emulsion (the one you are using).
Most durable matt paints, will sheen up with heavy scrubbing because it flattens the matt paint off with scrubbing causing it to flash.
These emulsions, are scrubbable..... But that just means it won't take the paint off when scrubbed

I don't recommend Harris sleeves tbh... They are not the best quality imo. Better off with trade quality sleeves, for the best finish, but the nature of a roller is to not leave a perfectly flat smooth finish... Especially with an acrylic matt paint that dries very fast. You can add a little paint conditioner to the paint to give it a, little more oen time, or add a little water if the paint is too thick... This helps get the best possible results.... But matt emulsion is not smooth.

With a new sleeve, slightly dampen it and prime it with paint before rolling....apply enough pressure when applying but always lay it off very lightly making sure you lay off in the same direction(from top to bottom)

@@JoeProDecor Hey Joe many thanks for all your tips and advice! I had no idea about these sorts of paints being 'scrubbable' thought they were bomb proof, I will bare this in mind for the future. I should probably rub the shiny patches down lightly, clean the wall or do you think just going back over with two new coats will cover them? I think I go with the perfection rollers by Hamilton, they look far superior in quality, there a very slight texture on the wall he applied so I guess that is a microfiber he used like the Hamilton rollers you suggested in your video.
I have subscribed, your videos are very helpful information. Cheers for all the help!

@@adamdavidkenyon6664 no problem at all.... Very few paints, are bomb proof tbh... But if you want something that is both scrubbable and wipeable without buffing it up, the acrylic eggshell is perfect... It levels off a little smoother (hence the sheen) which makes it more wipeable and stain resistant.... But like any paint... They have their pros and cons... Because it has more sheen.... It highlights any imperfections on the surface more... So prep is even more important.
You could even apply a satin finish which is even more smoother and stain resistant, something like Benjamin Moore scuff x satin

The purdy frame is useless at the wall edges. Leaves scratch marks. Have to go over the edges again with a brush or smaller roller.

I agree Jamie, I combat that with a 4 inch mini roller around the edges so I don't have to get that close.

Yes.I can confirm that all or most americans rollers are 1-1/2" .Even if they don't hold much paint as the 1-3/4" they are lighter and can go closer to the ceiling.I have few purdy and wooster rollers sleeve and frames.

No offence its a good video. But bobbly is not a DIY term its "uneven" and you forgot to time stamp or list your products and their uses..like other videos. Lets face it the subject is not very exciting so its helpful to time stamp your key points to help out a passing novice (so thats my thumbs down)..thank you.

I appreciate all feedback, however I did not forget to time stamp the video due to the fact It is not that long, and all info is useful for a complete beginner. I agree that the subject is not that exciting, because let's be honest, painting and decorating is not exciting is it? Regarding the term 'bobbly' I think most people watching this video will know exactly what I meant, just like you, they will know it's another word used for uneven 😬
      All the very best, Joe
