And it is so so so true! I had to listen to her book a couple of times but once you actually listen and take to heart what she says, it all makes so much sense. Also she says that folks can be a bit of a mix. I would say that it’s like a “primary” mode and a “secondary” mode. In the end, it’s all about being aware of what you tend to do and not what you wish you were like.

I'm a bee and my fiance is a ladybug. So we've compromised with the butterfly system! It helps me to let things be "good enough" but still visual and it helps him just get things into the categories easily enough. And because our clear bins can be tucked into cabinets and such, it can be mostly out of sight but once you open the cabinet/closet, there's a nice pleasing visual for me. It works nicely for us! Also, it helps that he doesn't mind some stuff being out when it looks nice and I don't mind some stuff being put away when it's not that hard to just open a drawer/door and locate it!

Im a hardcore cricket and my husband is the most relaxed butterfly.I recently reorganized my linen closet. Instead of driving myself crazy I decided to compromise and organize as a “relaxed bee”. I got lots of clear plastic bins with lids and I while my categories are many more than a butterfly, they are still much broader than I would choose to do personally . While I thought it would make me anxious or feel like a sloppy disorganized mess, this system of compromise works because my husband is keeping up wi th the bins, isn’t overbuying because he can see through the bins and sees if we have something (he will NEVER rummage through a bin looking for pain medication or toothpaste), and yet there is organization and containment. I also am happy because I can just shut the closet door and not have to see the clear bins that slightly stress me out. “Good enough is good enough” is the motto I have adopted.

    • @essierose7202
      @essierose7202 2 роки тому +15

That's awesome that as a butterfly your husband is able to maintain the containers with lids, usually that would be too much for a butterfly! That's why I love clear drawers like the ones cass used for the bee in this video, nothing is out in the open but drawers are so much quicker and convenient!

I can tell you one thing: as we grow and change, so does our style...including organizing style. I remember being in my -teens (having no kids and a better memory) I was a total butterfly: everything on display, bright and shiny, but in a very relaxed way! As I got married and had kids, I went through both cricket and ladybug fazes (as a means of trying to control all the messiness of parenthood)... Now that I am in my 40s and my kids are grown, I have come a full circle and discovered myself as a BEE (still things on display, still bright and shiny, but in a more meticulous way (i guess i'm still trying to control things 🤦‍♀))...
What I am saying is: life happens, we change, priorities shift...just gotta allow ourselves transform...

I am somewhere between a butterfly and bee, it depends on the category of item. If its something I like, like art supplies, then I sort it all really detailed. Stuff I don't like, like pantry items, get shoved in broad category bins. Was finally diagnosed with adhd this year after a few years of a discovery journey and realising that I'm not *messy* its just that my brain works slightly differently. I can't put things in drawers and cupboards because then they are just *gone*. Starting to reorganise my stuff in bins and clear containers has really helped.

Thank you very much Cassandra. I am a .bee who lives with butterflies. I remember numerous times where my husband and I went into my sons room to help him organize and clean. My husband was so shocked with the things he was finding in there. I told him you could find a snake and I wouldn't be surprised. Voila! I discovered you. I've read your books, I'm a big fan of your HGTV show. I try to preach your message to any family member who will listen. Why? Because my adult son's room is 80% better than what it used to be since I figured out he is a butterfly. I actually caught him rolling up his laundered socks and basketball shooting it into the bins instead of leaving it on the bed. Which of course would end up on the floor. I'll take the 80%. I'm not asking for perfection anymore. I am learning to embrace good enough. My new motto is "Progress, not perfection." I'm still fighting with decluttering because I am a upcycle queen. You know I could always use that for something else. So don't get rid of it just yet.❤

I realized a year ago that I am a Bee, and that has really helped inform me about *why* I organize things the way I do, and why something that I thought would be great turns out to be horrible. I like detailed organization because when I decide I need/want to use something, I want to immediately put my hands on it. I don't want to spend time digging through a bin looking for something (which I often can't find, even if I know it's there, because there's too much to see). I also hate lids with a fiery hot passion. I zone items in my office based on how frequently it's used, lots of open shelves, clear drawers with dividers (all labeled) and now I'm good to go. The biggest challenge for me has been figuring out where to store "file-like" things that I may want to use again, but won't necessarily remember if I put them in a filing cabinet (like handouts from a class). Binders on shelves next to reference books on the same topic has made a big difference in getting paper off my desk.
As for the dating thing: I met my husband nearly 30 years ago by placing a (lengthy) personal ad. I did not ask for photos (they couldn't see what I looked like from the ad). I wanted to see how they communicated who they were in words. I figured most people aren't hideous, so I wasn't concerned about that (I'm also far more interested in whether or not they're funny and smart, which is what leads to someone being attractive to me beyond the superficial)

I saw that you can put them in a folder and have it standing up, like in a narrow rectangular bin, or a wall file system. Catt found a wire coated plate holder and bent each rung upward. She shared it in a video. You can have it sitting on a table or desk, or hang it on the wall. She got the plate holder from the dollar store. I don't know if that would help you.

I consider myself a cricket, but I also found myself wondering how are they going to find anything without having to unstack and open all of those grey bins? I liked the bee organizational system better in this video. Everything was labeled and easily accessible. Having it be in the closet behind a closed door is plenty hidden for me, I wouldn't need to hide it again. Also, there's no way my butterfly family would ever put anything away correctly with those unlabeled opaque bins.

Thank You So very much for this!! I discovered that I am a true Cricket! After watching this video, I took a serious look at my organization system in my garage. I thought that I had organized things pretty well, but, always felt annoyed when looking at my shelves. What I discovered was that my bins...that were meticulously organized...in my old home had been housed behind the closed doors of storage closets. In my new home, I have open shelving. So the once "organized" bins now looked like overwhelming clutter as they were no longer hidden and allowed every item to be seen!! I didn't realize it, but, it was driving me crazy!!😂😂😂 I hit the link and headed to the container store. I also grabbed some solid, labeled bins from Bed, Bath and Beyond. Though I'm not done "re-organizing", the relief that this new system is providing is astounding!!! You have a Forever Fan!!! Thank You!

I think I'm a butterfly-ladybug hybrid. Maybe I'm still just overwhelmed with clutter and would be a butterfly if I had everything under control. I don't want to see *anything* out (which is 100% not possible in my house right now). But my ideal is to open up cabinets and closets and have it beautifully visual inside. I've decluttered so much, but I still feel drowning in things (with four little kids that leave things everywhere!)
Oh, and online dating is bananas. I understand why there's a draw to it (so much easier and less risky than meeting someone in real life, especially as we're more and more used to social media and less used to in person connection) but I don't think it's actually best for "humanity" on a grand scale. 😂 I know plenty of people who've met their spouse online, and I'm probably just being old and crotchety, but that's what I think about it!

Without labels your stuff is almost guaranteed to end up in the wrong bin and defeat the purpose. I would suggest using smaller labels so they aren't as overwhelming. Since the bins are frosted you might even be able to put the labels on the inside in a mirror image so that they are still visible from the outside, but softened by the frosted container! Or maybe using a picture instead of words would be less stressful?

I love the categories you've given each organizing style. It's been interesting watching my wife, a former litigation paralegal, embrace her true self. In her job, everything was categorized, labeled, boxed, and stored in a room designated for trial prep. Everything had a special place, yet everything was "hidden". Although my wife can't stand disarray, her true nature is that of the BEE. A photographer, she relies on visual cues for inspiration. Just as you said, she tends to hang on to more than she should; her creativity finds a purpoe for nearly everything! Recently she commented that since retiring from litigation, she wasn't nearly as disciplined in her organization routine. She thought she was being lazy. After watching your video, she realized that the more she adapted and embraced "the bee", the more creative she became. Not lazy, but free. She subscribed!

Loved this, Cass. Very fun to watch.
I've enjoyed organizing since I was a child. For me, things had to have and be in their own place. Well, except those teen years.😩 My Mom never complained about my messy room though, stating instead how nice the ceiling looked. I'd laugh and show her my drawers and closet were still tidy to make her feel she hadn't lost me completely.
It depends on what the room's purpose is, or who is using it, how I organize it. I even organize my own rooms differently by use. My art studio has almost everything visible, PVC pipe turntables for colored pencil sets, acrylic drawers for pens and other small supplies, baskets for storing art papers and books, divided marker trays for my art markers, etc. You get the idea.
Whereas my sewing craft room, other than the walk-in closet which has folded or tubed fabric on display, most everything is in covered, well labeled containers.
The woodwork shop which is shared with hubby, has a combination of hidden and in view storage.
*As for shopping for boys? In my day, we did that at the Disco.*

I'm a bee/cricket depending on what is being organized. My husband is the opposite, he wants to just toss things in quickly. He can't be bothered with lids and I only like lids for the benefit of keeping dust out. Neither of us likes unstacking containers to get to the lower one and then restacking them.
Clear drawers is what we used to organize in the bathroom and that seems to be working. I get my closed containers and he gets the simplicity of a large drawer for his things but he will also use the smaller category drawers that I set up for the subcategories within first aid and such because they're simple and quick to get in and out of and it's not the everyday stuff.
Now if I could just get something like a library card catalog but with tons of various size drawers to organize my craft/sewing things into I'd be delighted.

She now understands that while I'm certainly capable of taking an item going to the closet, opening a lidded container, putting the item in the container etc. etc. That it's not something I'm going to do and my not doing that isn't a decision that I actively make or me being lazy. She never imagined I would end up as a cricket, and I think she still secretly resents it, unamused by the fact that, despite her wanting it so bad and her trying so hard to make it happen, I didn't turn out to be just like her, and now she doesn't like dealing with it. I've been forced to enforce it whenever my parents visit me, because when I didn't, I ended up tripping over things in the middle of the night (which woke them both up - not sure what possessed my mom to think that leaving a mop and bucket in the middle of the room overnight was a good idea) and having meltdowns from the total visual overwhelm.

I've taken your quiz and I got Cricket. However, for a linen closet I like the Bee style. To me, it's hidden because it's behind a door, but once you open it, I want to be able to see everything. So does that make me a Cricket or a Bee?

YES!!! This is always what gets me confused too! I want visual simplicity, I want all my stuff tucked away in drawers and cupboards, but once I open those spaces I want to immediately see what I have and im detailed!

And when Cass says (paraphrasing) - bees want their everyday items out where they can see them - that makes me think of having all my items on open shelving etc which I couldn't stand!

Last week, my daughter-in-law shared this video. My life is changed forever! Turns out, I'm a ladybug. After one day of organizing, I can find things in my pantry and nothing else fell on the floor when I reached for the sugar. Next---my closet!

So I thought I was a butterfly, then I thought I was a lady bug, but truly I am a Bee, but I want to be a lady bug. I want big categories. I know I'm not a Cricket. Thanks for this. I'd like to see more areas that are showing all 4 Bugs, like living room, kitchen overall, then pantry and and cabinets. You are a jewel. I love watching you and listening to you and I always stay until the end for my chuckle. I've never been diagnosed with ADHD; I have all the signs. My doctor wanted to send me to a specialist, however, I've lived with it for nearly 70 years so I'll get by a few more. I don't want my family to have to sort through all my stuff and there is a lot of it, when I'm gone. I can't let go easily. You are helping me a lot and so are the other declutter specialist. I've watched ya'll so much I think I chant Declutter, declutter, declutter in my sleep.

I'm new to the channel and I'm so thankful that my "style" is a style! I'm a Bee and I always thought that my things were not that organized because I was judging myself by Ladybug standards. To remember to finish that project. To remember to take my meds etc! Not to mention that as a kid I wasn't allowed to throw away anything. I mean my mother would pull stuff out of the trash behind me. I might finally have a functional house for once in my life. Bonus points - my husband is also a Bee! So that fully explains the piles and go through that box later mentality. 🐝

This helped me to understand how I organize. I always struggled and spent so long researching late at night for weeks to find the perfect way I wanted and it did not always work. Meal planning did not work for me but freezer meals do. Trying isn't a bad thing until you know but takes so much time like under sink storage that works for me is 2 cleaning caddies for bath and kitchen clean ups organized be the sections. I realized I am a bee. My significant other took the quiz and he is a butterfly. We can better organize our house now because of this video! I grew up in a home with a cricket and it got me discouraged because it wasn't my way of doing things and there was no room for anything different there with lots of stuff behind doors or curtains with very little actual organize but a lot of small categories that take too much time for me to rummage through to time one thing then have to fix everything right then to be right again. Our house was always messy with little projects from the cricket and overflowing boxes from my ladybug dad. This has given me perspective and going to greatly help my organizational endeavor with my new whiteboards that are keeping me on tack!

My little flower tip is orchids. I purchased a few from Walmart on clearance 2 years ago. I assumed they would be dead within the month if not the week. I'm not a plant person. Once a week I fill up their pots with water and let them kind of swim in that for 5 minutes ..or 5 hours.. whenever I remember to dump the water out. Then them back near a window. It doesn't have to be even a sunny window. They look great and bloom often and for a loooong time. I always get compliments from people who come over about my beautiful flowers. And how on earth do I have such gorgeous orchids? I just googled it and have this little weekly routine and they're doing great. I haven't even taken them out of their pots from Walmart. The roots are crazy overtaking the pots inside. But I'm just leaving well enough alone. Anyway, I always have fresh flowers (from at least one of my 4 plants) for a one time investment of $6 each 😁
