I have a laundry basket that I bought at K-Mart in 2009 for 99 cents when I was moving into my first apartment. It's sitting right in front of me as I'm watching your video, 14 years later and still doing its job! Apparently it's the best 99 cents I've ever spent.

I have to say about those first 3 drawer dresser/totes you hate so much - they were a godsend for me in my camper. I stored our beach towels, lake shoes, kids swim goggles in there in my bedroom closet. The 5 drawer tall slender one was in my bathroom closet storing my bathroom supplies, wash cloths, razors, curling iron etc. So that's my story. They saved my dilemma on storage.

Same, I dont have them anymore but for years I used in the closets as drawer space for clothing etc. since our ALL our built-in closets were just hanging with a big shelf above .... but for kids toy storage, which is why I bought the plastic drawers initially, they were just giant clutter collectors where things went to die ... at some point, I switched to the cube shelving with fabric cubes for toys and that was the best thing ever .. I dont know if better homes had theirs at the time but Im switching over to those slowly, their cube shelves are deeper and wider and the cubes are considerably bigger, perfect for clothing etc...

my sewing room is filled with these 3 drawer plastic rolling carts. I know that they can become dumping grounds, but for a craft room they are perfect for organizing fabric, yarn, and other craft supplies that you want to divide and segregate. LOVE them for that. Agreed. I used one for tools and supplies while DIYing my house (painting cabinets and laying new floors). I could always move my tools near me, and wheel them away into another room between work sessions, so they weren't in the way and I wasn't looking at work items during the down time. I also use them in the garage bc they come in both versions that are wide and shallow (good in closets and tight spaces) or slimmer and deeper (great at the back of the garage). I just don't always use the wheels.

One each for painting and gardening supplies in the garage, one for pet supplies, one for hats/scarves/gloves, one for office supplies, and two stacked without the wheels in my bedroom closet for first aid, personal care, & beauty items. This "buy this not that" was spot on.
I only know of three successful uses of the dreaded plastic "dressers": I've used one drawer for each day's kits for VBS crafts class; one drawer per day per child for preselected school outfits works for my nieces; and I saw them used for fluffy yarn and placed protectively under craft tables in a craft room tour video. I think they're only useful for lightweight items in precise categories and sheltered from attempts to treat them like real furniture. They're only less-sturdy covered bins which you don't have to unstack.
The resin shelves are okay but they are also only suitable for certain purposes. They must be on a flat, level, sturdy surface and they should only have about a quarter of the weight per shelf of what it says on the label. Many versions will hold plastic shoe or sweater boxes fairly well so they could be used for hobby and craft supplies and perhaps holiday decor if it fits in the smaller bins.
The best use I know for the "don't buy" wire cube shelves is as portable displays at flea markets and craft fairs. (Used with zip ties as hinges for easy setup still allowing them to fold up flat.) They may also work zip-tied into cube baskets for more visible storage on sturdy shelves.
A tip for choosing small and medium sized laundry baskets: While the rigid styles may seem more sturdy, the flexible ones are much more durable if they're ever squeezed, overfilled, or might be sat in or on. The rigid ones will crack before the flexible ones will tear. Flexible ones can also fit in an irregular space or one slightly smaller than ideal.

Cas, I was wondering if you would ever do one show with each clutterbug, (Bee, Cricket, Butterfly & Ladybug) using the same idential space, so we can see the same space organized by different ways for each. Perhaps a closet, or spare room, kitchen, or something. Each of my daughters are in their 30's (triplets) and we are different clutterbugs. I will defend the plastic drawers for a cheap addition of closet space… we have a couple that I use for pajamas, tank tops, and athletic shorts. The giant ones also work well for under bed storage for wrapping paper, extra sheets, etc. Also the smaller ones have worked for us for horse supplies in the barn… I guess what I’m saying is if you designate it for one type of thing and stick to it, they work (from a ladybug)… but otherwise for “stuff” they have become overwhelmed quickly 😂

My Mom actually had 4 of these and they work well for me, but I am a cricket based on your quiz. They were free since they were here in her home. So I use small boxes inside the draws to divide items. I have the ones similar to the black one you rolled away. I added picture and labels from my label maker on each drawer.
    1. My sewing room
    A. with cross stitch needle minders
    B. Cross stitch fabric
    C. Fancy floss
    2. Medical cart
    A. Bandages
    B. Essential oil containers
    C. Stethoscope, ace wrap. Medical tape
    3. Office
    A. Pens, pencils in small boxes
    B. Shipping items, envelopes
    C. Ruler and stapler
So they can work but your right I had to become creative. My friend who is a bee it does not work because they became junk drawers like you mentioned.

That's it, hall closet is less than 24" wide and deep so kinda fills up fast, so this was my option. Those wire panel cube systems are actually great, you just need to reinforce with zip ties after assembling. You can also install extra panels inside the cubes with zip ties to make shallower shelves, perfect for shoe or craft storage. Or hang some panels on the wall with command hooks and add small s-hooks or clothes pins to organize accessories. They're super versatile!

I could manage without the internet, but it would be a challenge. We live on the edge of OKC and we are always last to get power back up since it isn't heavily populated. We installed a generator that kicks on automatically when power is out. Just enough power to run one bathroom (we are on a well), the stove top, fridge and lights in the center of the house. We stay warm, sleeping by the fire. Came in pretty handy the last ice storm. Except the generator is a little noisy so it would attract zombies/walkers...........LOL

I wish I had a generator! Lost power for seven days. We're rural ( water tank and pump) so no shower, no flushing toilet...and no internet as five cell towers went blown over in the cyclone. It was a lesson in patience and being thankful for our property not being damaged too much, but my teenager found it pretty rough! Lol. Wouldn't swap this for city living for the world 😆.

@kerrywatson8581 when you've got no power or water, here's a few tips for the future:
      1) Line your toliet with black trash bag then white one, fill with kitty litter, do business, add litter as needed, bag white bag when need to change litter, add another white bad & fresh litter, & repeat as needed... you can get scented or scoopable litter if desired, but personally just get cheap stuff & change the bag!
      2) You can make a few heaters/light sources pretty cheaply & efficiency... look up crisco candles, alcohol paint can heaters, & terra-cotta pot heaters. All of these burn clean (no C02), which is important. They are easy to prep, small to store, & have shelf stability, but they also provide big bang for the buck on heat/light sources, so they are good alternatives to generators.
      3) pitch a tent inside your living room, add couch pillows to bottom, sleeping bags, & hunker down inside... especially at night or in coldest temps, as you'll be only heating up a small area with body heat or whatever your using.
These won't save your freezer/fridge, but they'll save your life...

You can easily set and reset shelves with adjustable pegs at 1 inch increments. So they accommodate a huge variety of boxes and bins. They’re very sturdy. The ones that I got after college are still with me and just as useful. I also use them as wall-to-wall bookcases/display shelves to.

As a Canadian fan, I have to say I LOVE Giant Tiger. It is great for essentials like cleaning products, basic food items, pajamas, socks, etc. I am also glad you pointed out that Walmart is not always the best choice.

@@Clutterbug We don't have Giant Tiger. I agree with @Angela_flute52689 in that Big Lots may be the closest equivalent. Some might argue that "Tuesday Morning" is another similar store.

Love this! Your presentation is the most fun. & I appreciate your impulse buying sensitivities cause I can never get out of $tree with out some impulse items. Yesterday 4 books, cause they looked good ( for a change) & how can you beat 1.25?!? Thanks for sharing!

I had to laugh all the way through this - I absolutely love the first thing you hated, those 3 drawer organizers! I have 6 of them, stacked that I use in my craft business for supplies and finished items, I LOVE them! And I only paid around $20 for them and just checked and they are still that price here.
I think any organizer won't work if it is the wrong organizer for your needs. I would not use something like that for kids toys, but I love it for my use. I think the main thing is to just think through things before buying organizers.
Your Walmart in Canada has prices that are WAY higher than here in the states. I even just jumped online and checked before commenting and many of the items you pointed out are at least half if not less than half the price here in the states.
I don't think I agree with most of your recommendations as it seems to be a personal choice and based on prices in your particular area. It is interesting to see though.

We lost power too, but have a small generator, and our freezer and fridge were able to run, and we could charge phones, but internet was out. We had no heat,….. or power connections to run our furnace, well pump for water, or ejector pump…. Lol we did enjoy my old school Radio Shack transistor radio….. Thank God I bought a huge pack of double AA batteries at Costco for radio and flashlights! My Son and Daughter in law were in worse shape in Ann Arbor Mi. They went four days without power…. Makes one appreciate what they have!

    Hi Cas,
Once again, I find your wonderful suggestions AFTER I made the bad purchases... but am learning to research before buying, so I'm making progress.
    THANKS FOR BEING THERE!
And hang in there... the power will return and WiFi will reconnect. It's such an eye-opener when we lose things we took for granted. My thing was the heat... Who'd have thought California winters could get so cold!
    Love ya!

*hides plastic drawer units* Okay, you caught me! I have two of those plastic drawer things. I got them cause they are the perfect dimensions for fitting under the tables I use as office/work areas.
One of them is for stationery supplies and the other is for daily medications and things I like to keep close at hand (tablets, ereader, headphones, etc)....

I use them for picnic items (paper plates) etc and extra kitchen wraps. And extra vitamins etc under the lower shelves in my pantry. Also one in the laundry room for cleaning rags, vinyl gloves for cleaning, clothes pins etc. lightweight things
They work well for lightweight items.

Your Walmart is waaaaay more expensive than mine! Those 3-drawer things you hate are about $16... and they saved my life in my craft room. I CAN see inside of them and I have the drawers labeled. I roll them under the counter top that was already in that room and I can roll them out when I need to. Also, my nine-hole cubbie is like $40...

My answer is Thrift Stores, Dollar Tree, Amazon, and Walmart. The one big plus from Amazon is its reliable product "ratings" and multi-brand options, where you can ask questions of previous buyers. I usually put items on my "save" list and wait a day or two to prevent impulse buying. Expensive items that have been on my save list for some time will often go down in price by as much as 20%. Amazon also helps by saving on gas and time spent wandering malls and stores. But, then again, I'm a single guy so shopping isn't really my thing ... but value for money is. That's why I watched this video.👍

We had one of those deep Sterilite 3-drawer things for my kids' toys when they were little. Eventually the frame gave out, but the drawers were/are super tough and now I use them to organize tools on big metal post and wire (Metro) shelves. They are tougher than the totes with lids, but are only useful for open storage.
