    Lyrics:
    I'll remember it
    And Dublin in a rainstorm
And sitting in the long grass in summer
    Keeping warm
    I'll remember it
    Every restless night
    We were so young then
    We thought that everything
We could possibly do were the right
    Then we moved
    Stolen from our very eyes
And I wondered where you went to
Tell me when did the light die
    You will rise
    You'll return
    The phoenix from the flame
    You will learn
    You will rise
    You'll return
    Being what you are
    There is no other Troy
    For you to burn
And I never meant to hurt you
    I swear I didn't mean
    Those things I said
I never meant to do that to you
Next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead
    Oh, does she love you
What do you want to do?
Does she need you like I do?
    Do you love her?
    Is she good for you?
Does she hold you like I do?
    Do you want me?
    Should I leave?
I know you're always telling me
    That you love me
    Just sometimes I wonder
    If I should believe
    Oh, I love you
    God, I love you
I'd kill a dragon for you
    I'll die
    But I will rise
    And I will return
    The Phoenix from the flame
    I have learned
    I will rise
    And you'll see me return
    Being what I am
    There is no other Troy
    For me to burn
And you should've left the light on
You should've left the light on
    Then I wouldn't have tried
    And you'd never have known
And I wouldn't have pulled you tighter
No I wouldn't have pulled you close
    I wouldn't have screamed
No I can't let you go
    And the door wasn't closed
No I wouldn't have pulled you to me
No I wouldn't have kissed your face
You wouldn't have begged me to hold you
If we hadn't been there in the first place
Oh but I know you wanted me to be there oh oh
Every look that you threw told me so
But you should've left the light on
You should've left the light on
    And the flames burned away
    But you're still spitting fire
Make no difference what you say
    You're still a liar
    You're still a liar
    You're still a liar

I was OBSESSED with this song in high school when it came out in the late 80's. I would listen to it in the car when my mom (rip) drove me to school and I assumed she was not enjoying it until one day out of nowhere she busts out "I'D KILL A DRAGON FOR YOOOUUUU!!!!" and we both laughed until it hurt.

Relationship failure, eviction, job loss, murder, kidnapping, loss of my mother - I was only 17 and the summer of 1990 was putting me through the wringer. Thank you, Sinead. I do agree her music was more emotive in the beginning, really grabbed one's heartstrings, and I admire your view, but it did not stop at 'The Lion & The Cobra'....for me, Sinead’s music isn’t supposed to sound catchy. It isn’t necessarily about the instruments, but about the instruments following or guiding her voice [the main instrument], and her voice is one of the best in the industry! Her melodies aren’t defined in the realms of mastering techniques, compression, high-polished guitar solo’s, synth lines, etc.. Her music doesn’t follow the predictable rhythm of what sounds fresh to the ear. That’s what separates her from the streetwalkers of the music industry who’ll work with just about anybody to make a quick buck or grab the latest sound. The backbone and substance of O’Connor’s songs are rooted in authentic storytelling, they cannot be sold off or edited for commercial approval, producer favor, which is significant in her genuine the emotive melodies that align perfectly through lyrics and topics that either uplift you or aggravate you. Her story has to be felt with the listener or it won’t be understood. That’s honestly what music is supposed to be like. I know that for me, I can feel her sensitive soul shine, ignite and fill that euphonious framework with a zealot passion that refuses to be forgotten. To me that extends just mere talent.

She really deserved much better in this world. Everyone thought she was crazy, then the truth came out, and she was trying to protect the children.

This was the most important song out of all Sinead's, and I loved all her albums I had and listened to on repeat. I was teenager and English isn't my native language so I didn't understand much of the lyrics but the emotions of deepest sadness, longing and anger were cathartic to me then. I had quite traumatic childhood so this wasn't just a teenage angst, it was much deeper for me. I don't think Sinead is spending her time reading comments on YT, but I wish she knew that her creation gave moments of consolation when life wasn't bearable. And I hope that whatever she went through she found that consolation for herself too.

Beautifully said. I'm in tears. My connection to her music is also from my adolescence. Like you, I was dealing with severe trauma and a broken family. Her willingness to just let it all out and how she stood for truth knowing full well what was coming her way inspires me to this day. This woman saved my life quite literally and taught me so much. Like you, I hope she knows she has had this influence on other women.
Glad you survived. I hope you are safe and well.

For me, this song runs through all the emotions you feel during the final stage of a break up and afterwards. The pathetic, almost begging phase then the mild anger sliding into intense anger and then into the strength of acceptance and moving on. I love it and it was my anthem during a break up in the early 90's

What we had, this music, this artist, in the 80's and 90's. And some think we know nothing. RIP our heroine

Arguably her BEST track.. nothing like it then and nothing like it now. The voice, the intensity, her look.... this is her legacy, not a Prince cover. No matter what you think of her and the life she led, she was the consummate artist. Did what she wanted on her terms.Very sad day.

Mind-blowingingly brilliant. As we tread water in a sea of mediocrity you were certainly one of a kind who will forever shine as a beacon of light and inspiration in a troubled world. RIP Sinead.
