Age 17 in 1991 I was totally captured by the video and the sound. About to leave foster care as soon as I turned 18 to go it alone as a young adult into the unknown big wide world to live independently. Every lonely but strong purposeful stride Shara took as she walked those streets to the bitter sweet happy sad sound was symbolic of me at that time. It moved me back then and still moves me when I hear it today age 50. Still navigating through the streets of life. But then again, aren't we all.
I rilly, rilly hope that things turned out well for you. You seem to have some grace and dignity for someone who went through the foster-"care" system.

One of the many reasons why this is a classic is that no other song has ever sounded remotely like it: the strings, the beat, the lyrics, the scratching and weird percussion sounds, but, most of all, Shara Nelson's unique vocals. For me, it brings back memories of things that never happened.
this is the absolute perfect description of that song I was born 92, heard this song thru my childhood and it always felt so familiar, so warm I cannot even describe it
Timeless and still fresh !!! And also classique! Much better than the comparison betw. the 50s to the 80s or betw. the 60s to the 90s of course. But what scares me more... THAT IT IS at least 30 yrs ago now, when i just turned to a young adult. Where did time go? But glad for THAT experience... In my humble opinion, the most beautiful piece of popular music in the last 30 years. It somehow manages to be cold, warm, mechanic and human at the same time. The brilliance of this song is that it combined the tradition of soul music with what was then an amazingly forward-looking style of music without sounding like a gimmick or a cliché. The beat, the samples, the scratching, the strings, Shara Nelson's voice, that heartbreaking vocal and the production... Everything here is about subtlety, balance and everything fitting together at the right time. And it's truly heartbreaking that Shara Nelson didn't have the career she deserved when you know she co-wrote this masterpiece.
Groundbreaking and fantastic, agreed. The most beautiful since 1986 , hmmm that needs a discussion. I'll throw in Seal's debut album and 'Walking Wounded' for a start.

Agree! The feel is very much like an opera aria - she's a gospel/soul singer but she has the soaring power and emotional depth in her voice that someone like Leontyne Price, Renée Fleming or Anna Netrebko can gather into the song, and the orchestra helps lift her to that "farewell" climax around two minutes in. 🎵🎶🙏

Its not a song, it’s a memory, a feeling, a trip down memory lane. And it’s all good. Everything fits.. I will always love this song, will always play this song, on very possible occasion. Because it should be played. Always. Period
i understand exactly what you mean. Such a great song and symphony ! Listen Sky and sand from Paul Kalbrenner, maybe you know this song. It is not the same tempo at all, but kind of same feelings for me.
I have found this to be the most peaceful song ever, not the saddest. It releases withheld emotions, especially live, but puts you at peace with yourself, and the demons you're dealing with from within.
The part where she sing "how can we have a day whitout a night" remind me of this period which unfortunately represents the night but which sooner or later will pass and then become day again
I never comment on nothing but there's times when you gotta speak up. One of the best tunes of that era makes you feel like there's more to music than we know 😊
The 90's were truly taking music into its limits, Massive Attack and Trip-Hop in general was a great example to this with the birth of the Bristol sound. Just a real hype to get into a new century overall, As to cite a comment i once read on an Aphex Twin song.
This was my mums favourite song, I can still hear whacking the speakers to full and singing her beautiful little heart out! Sadly lost her at the young. Age of 52
This track very cleverly captures such soaring, vulnerable heights of emotion due to the string's key in F major, which was a favourite amongst classical composers, such as Bach. A very intelligent production, which will never lose it's timeless appeal due to its diverse influences that span hip hop, soul, classical and electronica. It really touches deep into the soul of all who behold its achingly-beautiful majesty. A modern masterpiece.
Wow... way off the mark... this is ostensibly in minor.... d minor.... not even close to G major... also: nothing indicates that JSBach liked or used G major more than any other key... as for other classical composers..... Beethoven certainly favoured Eb major, this is well known and documented. Mozart used D major a lot, G major is coming in at 6th place....
@@thehappypimp Correct, Just plinked it out. Dminor. You can jam a dminor 6th chord with it. Didn't know that's what it was till I looked it up. Overated work too IMHO. Give me Wayne County any day ua-cam.com/video/LJYnSMk9seE/v-deo.html
This song is a masterpiece, period. Already more than 30 years old and still so powerful, this is unbelievable. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, no matter where I am or what I do. Thank you Massive Attack 🙏
Just quietly, where the hell did those more than 30 years ago? This is one of those that takes me back to that time. This is a recurring theme with my comments, but I’d give anything to be back there
Unfinished Sympathy" is a song by the English trip hop group Massive Attack. It was released on 11 February 1991 under the temporary group name Massive.[1] The song was written by the three band members Robert "3D" Del Naja, Andrew "Mushroom" Vowles and Grant "Daddy G" Marshall, the song's vocalist Shara Nelson and the group's co-producer Jonathan "Jonny Dollar" Sharp. It was released on 11 February 1991 as the second single from the band's first album, Blue Lines (1991), on the band's Wild Bunch label distributed by Circa Records.[2] The name "Massive" was used to avoid a radio ban, as the track's release coincided with the Gulf War. Produced by Massive Attack and Dollar, the song incorporates various musical elements into its arrangement, including vocal and percussion samples, drum programming and string orchestration by the arranger Wil Malone
@@Expara80 I dont have the bulb of knowledge, thanks for the information, I just wanted to let people here too to know the history of this song, being bad doesn't offer anything, I'm not an idiot
This song helped me through rough times in 1991. I would walk down the the street with my walkman on and this blasting. It freaking blew my mind.....you have to feel this song. It's ironic how 25 years later I'm back listening to it for different reasons...
I'm 45 yrs old , I was raving/ partying since the tender age of 15 with my older brother and I can honestly say this has to be the finest song I've ever listened to
I'm 45 too and also partying in the 90s with this song. And then, The Matrix came out.. Massive Attack, Rob Dougan.. those songs got the same/special vibes.
You're right. I'm from Poland, Europe. Firtst time I heard her long time ago and she's still in my head. What a master peace :) And I mean like 15 yers ago!!
I loved being a silly 20 year old interviewing them when I understood we would all find them amazing. i'm still little but I'm glad we know this together!!!
A mate of mine recorded this for me when it came out,I wasn't aware of much at the time I was at one my many lowest moments, reading The Idiot by Dostoyevsky.Drunk and off my face most of the time living in a 1 bedsit dump,in Battersea,a nutter close to the edge. This was ,and still is in my opinion one of the most beautiful, sad, and moving songs I've been lucky to hear.I'm now almost 63 very rarely off my face. But still am moved and eternally grateful to have grown up in a world where artists like these guys exist..It doesn't put food on your plate but music when it's this special feeds the soul, and man the soul really needs to be full !
Brutally honest and a sad recollection of your low point in life. But you got thru it; you stepped away from the edge and started caring for yourself again. You’re 63 years young with so much more of your life to live. Turn this song up loud. Sending you love x
I've been appreciating it since 1991. Quite literally thirty years 🙇🏻♂️ Without doubt the best track I have ever heard. I want this played at my funeral. Peace out my brothers and sisters, much love.
Man you hit it right in the head. I was 6 yrs old when this came out and all the music The came out of the early 90s mostly sounded like this and I remember every bit of it because my father used to play music like this all the time , Enya, Sade, New Age music in general. Man i miss the 90s so so much. Such a vibrant time.
My dad played this all the time when I was a kid! Saturdays were clean up days and my dad just blasted music all day. Lots of Enya, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Sade, Jimi Hendrix, Al Green, the list is long and eclectic.
I was 21 when this song came out and I'm now 54. There was NOTHING like it when it came out, and it hit just like it does now.... a special groove that can't be duplicated.
Times are different today. I wouldn't want to be starting out again with all the challenges out there. I hope you can live a good, happy, healthy life.
Some how it just transports me to how I felt and lived back in 1992, nostalgic vibes and wish I could be transported back to those times and stay there.❤
Absolutely with u. A Masterpiece full of energy to over help u stay strong I. This times. Peace ND U ity we need... Live without freedom is a body without heart.....
still as raw, pure, heartfelt, talented, beautiful, musical and human as ever. boy do i miss the days when bands were just trying to make the most beautiful music they could, not trying to please their target audiences or produce what they assumed people wanted to hear or what was in fashion back then. probably fair enough that this generation of 90s artists were the last ones to really make serious money in sales from their records. they were unique artists with vision and mission.
marsfuture I was 16 in 1991 and 90s were the best music/clubbing days of my life..ppl just wanted to be together and party enjoy being young pity youth today wernt the same✌
Ayshea Forshaw I was too! I couldn't agree more. I think it's more amazing that here we all are NOW In 2018, in our 40s lol, gathering at the UA-cam comment section, to voice our love and appreciation for such raw talent snd sheer genius. Massive attack is something that can't be explained. I saw them in concert in 2007 and I have never felt luckier. They are a musical phenomenon. One of a kind for sure.
Hailing from Bristol UK, when I was a lad, back in the 1980s, we used to watch our local Hip Hop group The Wild Bunch perform live at tons of gigs most summers. That group went on to become Massive attack! Even after all that fame, they still played some small local festivals/clubs. There all sound guys!
Yes Wild Bunch were wicked. We rapped with them at Tim Westwood's Rap Convention at the Wag Club in Soho back in the day. Cookie Crew were also on the bill.
"Unfinished Sympathy began as a fugitive melody floating around in Shara Nelson’s sub-conscious during the sessions for Blue Lines. When co-producer Jonny Dollar(Sharp) accidentally heard her humming the melody to herself, he urged her to sing it to him and loving the melody so much he hastily arranged a late-night jam in the studio - just a keyboard and drum machine with singer Shara Nelson extemporising her melody she had come up with on the day to music. Other Massive Attack members then began adding their own contributions to the song, with Mushroom’s DJ skills perhaps most notably adding that extra something to the song with his scratching and sampling qualities. The billowly string arrangement, which was the final part of the puzzle was the brainchild of Jonny Dollar, who first laid down synthesized strings, then brought in a 40-piece string section to dupe the part, conducted by string arranger Will Malone in none other than the famous Abbey Road Studios in London."
This is my favourite song, so I hope that story is true, because like the chorus, like a soul without a mind, in a body without a heart... Like Shara without MA.
I remember stopping dead in my tracks when I heard this for the first time. After it finished I realised I had moved an inch. It was and still is completely mesmerising and it now is a tune at a pivotal point in my life. This is what music is all about. Whatever genre you enjoy, it's sacred.
I love this song since I’ve heard it the first time. I was 16 and now that I’m bearly 50 it gives me the same vibes. Unique, brilliant, I could listening every day ❤
Another British dance music masterpiece , we had so many of them in the 90’s it was almost impossible to keep up . Fun fact - they were forced to change their name from “Massive Attack” around the time of the first gulf war , because “the powers that be” felt it “too aggressive” - cheeky cuntz !! Yet here they still are
I was born in 1987. I was like 5 years old when I watched the Video for the first time... One of the most beautiful memories of my childhood. And I still think this is epic :)
A super high quality track that has stood the test of time and still sounds as fresh today as it it it did when I first heard it back in '91. "Like a soul without a mind, In a body without a heart, I'm missing every part"
"Unfinished Sympathy" [Verse 1: Shara Nelson] I know that I've imagined love before And how it could be with you [Chorus: Shara Nelson] Really hurt me, baby, really cut me, baby How can you have a day without a night? You're the book that I have opened And now I've got to know much more [Verse 2: Shara Nelson] The curiousness of your potential kiss Has got my mind and body aching [Chorus: Shara Nelson] Really hurt me, baby, really cut me, baby How can you have a day without a night? You're the book that I have opened And now I've got to know much more [Verse 3: Shara Nelson] Like a soul without a mind In a body without a heart I'm missing every part Like a soul without a mind In a body without a heart I'm missing every part Like a soul without a mind In a body without a heart I'm missing every part Like a soul without a mind In a body without a heart I'm missing every part [Outro: ?] I don't know where this one came from I don't know where this one came from I don't know where this, I don't know where this I don't know where this, I don't know where this I don't know where this one came from Written By Grantley “Daddy G” Marshall, Shara Nelson, Jonathan Sharp, Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles & Robert “3D” del Naja Album BLUE LINES (1991)
This video has so much built in.. Everybody is caring or carrying something. Some are carrying a disability, heavy stuff, a message paper, a cart or just anger. Some are caring for others, like the kissing couple, the man & kid, the friends at the nail salon... and the singer walks through those opposites, without a pause and with an incredible command of her own voice. How could we see this being less than a masterpiece of subliminal messages... Just for that, this video can't ever be forgotten...
Man…still gives me goosebumps when I hear this. Soundtrack to one of the worst and also greatest periods of my life!! I remember dancing so joyfully with precious friends gone too soon. When I die, I hope I come back as a song. Music lives forever.
A Masterpiece that is still here with us in 2020 and i hope it will be here for decades in the future. The best love song ever in my opinion. Stunning.
In answer to previous comments about the 90s seeming more real, it's because we didn't have the internet. We couldn't sit down, click on UA-cam and watch stuff like this any time we wanted - we had to make the most of it while it was fresh and new, because pretty soon something else would come along, and the only way to carry on listening to a fantastic song like this was to buy a hard copy of an album on cassette or C.D. I'd forgotten about that sense of newness we used to love until I watched the T.F.I Friday revival with Chris Evans a few years ago: television was exactly the same - you had to grab it while it was going, or you'd miss so many unique moments forever...
Simply one of the best tunes ever released. There's something so soulful about it and wbatever the string instrument is (violin?) Just builds and adds an urgency to the song. If you could identify exactly what makes this timeless and bottle it you would be a billionaire. Just beautiful.

I have found this to be the most peaceful song ever, not the saddest. It releases withheld emotions, especially live, but puts you at peace with yourself, and the demons you're dealing with from within.
It kind of makes you feel enough just as you are while listening to

I never comment on nothing but there's times when you gotta speak up. One of the best tunes of that era makes you feel like there's more to music than we know 😊
The 90's were truly taking music into its limits, Massive Attack and Trip-Hop in general was a great example to this with the birth of the Bristol sound. Just a real hype to get into a new century overall, As to cite a comment i once read on an Aphex Twin song.

Quite possibly the greatest piece of music in the last 100 years.
Yes 🙌 💯
This track very cleverly captures such soaring, vulnerable heights of emotion due to the string's key in F major, which was a favourite amongst classical composers, such as Bach. A very intelligent production, which will never lose it's timeless appeal due to its diverse influences that span hip hop, soul, classical and electronica. It really touches deep into the soul of all who behold its achingly-beautiful majesty. A modern masterpiece.
Mahler Karajan, you know it?
Óh Man...
Wow... way off the mark... this is ostensibly in minor.... d minor.... not even close to G major... also: nothing indicates that JSBach liked or used G major more than any other key... as for other classical composers.....

Sending you love x

still as raw, pure, heartfelt, talented, beautiful, musical and human as ever. boy do i miss the days when bands were just trying to make the most beautiful music they could, not trying to please their target audiences or produce what they assumed people wanted to hear or what was in fashion back then. probably fair enough that this generation of 90s artists were the last ones to really make serious money in sales from their records. they were unique artists with vision and mission.

Yeah. They didn't had enought money, so sold car to pay for recording studio and all strings
😎 story
What a waste... 40 strings to play long chords only... if the story is true (cause it could have easily been done with digital strings)
@@ernestogasulla7763 It's all about the atmosphere created, not the skill it takes.

Thank you for this perfect masterpiece text
This video has so much built in.. Everybody is caring or carrying something. Some are carrying a disability, heavy stuff, a message paper, a cart or just anger. Some are caring for others, like the kissing couple, the man & kid, the friends at the nail salon... and the singer walks through those opposites, without a pause and with an incredible command of her own voice. How could we see this being less than a masterpiece of subliminal messages... Just for that, this video can't ever be forgotten...
Amen. Everyone is carrying around so much. I love this song.
