You can see as he is playing with each section he slightly slows then commits completely 1000% with no hesitation whatsoever. The dude is an absolute legend.
@@TGrimm yeah “aren’t supposed to” someone mentioned and a drum instructor would force them to stop with ghost bass note, despite that is what makes Chad f’ing Chad
Chad has a reputation for being a drumming giant. All his colleagues have always said that he is a phenomenon... Yet if you listen to the music of R.H.C.P. the drums is never in evidence. You can tell it's written with good taste because there's never anything out of place but it's all simple and linear, without anything virtuous or complex. This video explains everything, and you understand why Chad is truly a phenomenon. There's a whole series of these videos with famous drummers blindly playing music they've never heard. Some succeed very well, others a little less... What the fuck! He didn't even have to listen to the whole song! He started after 30 seconds as soon as he understood what the time signature was. It was certainly helped by the fact that the song is very banal in everything, including the structure and certainly with music like TOOL or Opeth it wouldn't have been anywhere near that easy, but it's still really impressive. What a beast! It seems difficult to believe it, cause the song is very famous. Knowing the character however, I don't believe he lies and I don't question his good faith. Maybe he heard it on the radio and since he hates it, he doesn't remember it. But it's also possible that he really improvised... Let's not forget that we're talking about a great professional who earns millions of dollars to play and that the song they assigned to him is banal even for me who have no knowledge of musical theory . For him it must be like a children's coloring book: it is not impossible to believe that he actually colored the sky blue and the grass green without ever having seen the photo before.
As a musician, there is literally nothing better than a drummer that just gets it. Chad Smith is the epitome of 'getting it'. A jam session with him would be a dream come true.
I just picture Shannon Leto seeing this at home and crying his eyes out, promising that "One day, when I grow up, maybe I can be a real professional drummer like Chad Smith."
@2:21 I love how he starts to explain the usual routine of this challenge, only later to find that madman Chad is operating off of exactly zero prep and 30 seconds of context. "30 Second to Mars? More like.... 30 seconds til I reverse engineer this entire track!"
Yah it's so good! I'm not a drummer but I really enjoy when they give us new "listens to a song for the first time" video.. and as you said.. he's the only one that went straight for it on first listen, and killed it.. the others took 2-3 passes before being comfortable enough with the song they were given
He wasn't the only person to really take a stab on the first listen on drumeo. Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett Hears Linkin Park For The First Time ua-cam.com/video/UZ4MobxEZoY/v-deo.html&ab_channel=Drumeo
@froogleislive Most likely though I'm going to apply the No Sequels to this one. Pick him another Emo racer song to do. On to the next. Let him rule!!!
as a bassist who has played with excellent drummers in my time and place, and seeing his change/adjustments, i kno that that man can just do it in one.
Since you're a bassist.. are there any channels that do similar to what Drumeo does, but for bassists? (bass-less track, and they have to make their own?)
It sort of comes with being a session drummer, but what he did is just a level beyond. You can tell Chad's music comprehension is just off the charts and his countless sessions with different artists' shows here, being able to just pickup on a song after 30 seconds.
I've never seen one of these where the drummer jumps in blind and in this case he nails it so well that it could literally be the drum part (except for the transitions, but I mean... blind)
People might not like their songs for whatever reason, but to not acknowledge how much of a BEAST formation it is to have Chad Smith, Flea and John Frusciante in the same band is, in my opinion, slightly disrespectful to music in general.
I don't think it's implausible that he'd never heard it before. While he is a drumming nerd (as most famous drummers are) people tend to stick to music they're familiar with or artists they have a connection to. When TSTM was at their peak people were music snobs about it, especially in the metal world. They might have been massive in the Emo world, like MCR, but in the wider metal world they were kind of shunned. Of course, he could have heard it once on the radio and some of it subconsciously stuck with him, but I think someone still has to have incredible skill and talent to be able to pick up on the structure like this and get so close. I think he's just an incredibly talented drummer.
Chad shows why he is a Legend! Truly amazing performance. I got goosebumps when i saw the video the first time. His talent and his passion are really awesome. I love this guy.
I love to watch Chad Smith and Carter Beaufort play drums..some drummers just look like they're having so damn much fun and its awesome to watch them get lost in a song❤
I’ve seen the video you’re reacting to at least 25 times and still get chills EVERY time. Love Chad Smith and your reaction was great, really enjoyed it 🙌🏻🥁🤘🏻
You're right about it sounding super similar but different. It's incredibly close but a little busier and with some of that classic RHCP energy brought to it. So many people aren't aware of how good he really is.
Drumeo concept is sick really love it ! Ive seen that video all over the internet for a couple of days now, its incredible . He is so talented. Al better drumming than the original version in my opinion
I loved watching your reaction because as much as I’ve rewatched this Drumeo with Chad, I was right there in the moment with you 🤣. It was such an EPIC moment. He is a Legend for a reason and to be 61 years old and still play like you’re in your Prime and be in an Iconic band for 40 years speaks to why it shouldn’t surprise so many that he nailed this song. Absolutely enjoyed watching this with you. 🙏🏻
@@elderemunk No Sir, thank you. It was truly my pleasure to watch someone acknowledge this MasterClass for what it truly was. So many thanks to you for acknowledging the why Chad is without a doubt a Legend and an Icon. I am a fan of 30STM but you can’t compare a 61 yo VET in an iconic band for so long to a Jarod Leto. No disrespect to Jared but they are not in the same league. 🙏🏻
Decades of unstructured jamming with Flea and John Frusciante, with each of them swapping out who is leading the jams on the fly, gives him the ability to do shit like this.
Sugarfoot was the only other drummer i saw just pick up the sticks and go. He kind of felt his way through a Linkin Park song and did pretty good at adjusting to the structure.
What you refer to "emo" here is just regular pop rock, it really doesn't deviate much from very much used pop music structural patterns so it's not nearly as hard as it might seem to a layman, what makes this one particularly impressive is Chad's ability to catch various little nuances on the fly and play along them.
Agreed on this song being good despite 30STM not being the best band out there. Their first 2 albums were pretty good, at least compared to the rest. (and yes, they were one of my favorite bands back in high school)
if you end the video without watching the whole video, then you're not really reacting to the video...which is a shame because this was the best reaction i've seen to the video
Honestly, the drumming isn't really that complex on the song. Like Chad said, once you realize it's in 3, you can just go and lay down a beat that will fit it.
You can see as he is playing with each section he slightly slows then commits completely 1000% with no hesitation whatsoever. The dude is an absolute legend.
I like how emunk is full stunned for 2min that Chad just jumps into it 12 measures in, instead of listening to the song through lol
Also Chad ghosting on the kick pedal so that he can respond faster on the improv is killer.
@@TGrimm yeah “aren’t supposed to” someone mentioned and a drum instructor would force them to stop with ghost bass note, despite that is what makes Chad f’ing Chad
Yup. A lot of "catch up" strokes in hi playing here but he's so damn good you can't hear it

to be fair... 30 seconds to mars writes songs using pretty standard song formatting, unlike some crazy shit like TOOL.
While I can't speak for every musician... I can say that your 2nd and 3rd sentences are reals facts
“Let’s put the drums on god mode.”
Chad Smith “Hold my beer, I got this.”
I just picture Shannon Leto seeing this at home and crying his eyes out, promising that "One day, when I grow up, maybe I can be a real professional drummer like Chad Smith."
absolutely mental, he listened the drumless track for like 30 seconds and just went for it truly a master at his craft.
Pun intended.
30 Seconds to Chad
God tier musician indeed!

"See what they usually do is listen once and-- 😐 wait wat"
My favorite part. 😂 I felt the exact same way.
2:43 that look when you realize Chad is a GOAT of drumming and you can't believe he is killing it this good on his first listen of the song.
That drumeo series is so fucking good. Impressive each and every time. Chad is the only person who just went for it though, and still killed it.

No man, emo songs aren't predictable at all, he's just a fucking God tier drummer.
Will Ferrill is a talented drummer.
He is quite handsome
I like Chad's version better than the original as well.
He crushed it yo. His video is WAY better than the rest of the videos.
If he had one more take it would have be flawless, Chad is a legend

This is 100% the correct reaction to Chad's Drumeo interpretation. Watching him launch into this song with ZERO preparation is insane!

Truly the Chad of drummers.
You're right about it sounding super similar but different. It's incredibly close but a little busier and with some of that classic RHCP energy brought to it. So many people aren't aware of how good he really is.
It's because of his philosophy. He basically said he is an engine, and his pistons have to always keep running.

Chad Smith takes 30 seconds to listen to 30 Seconds to Mars and nails a great improv version of one of their songs.
He's working with decades of experience, so I don't doubt that he can get by once he gets the feel for a song that he's never heard before.
I never get tired of that outro where he plays the 2 over the 3. It's the craziest flex.

There is a new video with Chat Smith in Drumio!
Chad has said in these interviews that a lot of time he came up with red hot songs improvised while jamming with the band
Why did you NOT play the last part? He plays along with the actual track.
What a chad
Do you not think 4:20-4:37 sounds like something Danny Carey would play.
