- I had the pleasure of attending the first ever MakersCamp in the Catskills, where I met Jimmy DiResta for the first time. He has been an inspiration for quite some time, and I wanted to make him a present. I have some experience using greyscale imagery to create 3D topographic models of lakes and other locations, so I thought I would make him a 3D art piece of New York, and carve in into a some beautiful walnut. Not only do I show you the build, but walk you briefly through my process for creating the model and project.
I want to give a huge thanks to the Catskill Makers Camp. This was the first annual, and it was a fantastic and intimate experience - and I would bet that next year will be much larger.
In this video, I use Aspire. There are other options. Here are a few links:

As a cartograph myself working for the german government i would love to have one of these from the german alps but l guess I will never be able to afford such a cnc o to get my hands on one.
What a real cartographer could do tho!
Tim, I am also a resident of the Smith Mountain Lake area, a CNC owner and a BIG fan of Jimmy Diresta! When I saw your video I couldn’t believe that someone so close had all the same interests. I live off of Scruggs Road in Moneta. Would love to chat with you if you get a chance.
I live at Lake powell which is mostly in Utah but partially in Arizona. I would like to do a map of the lake but I’m not sure how you would combine the two states into one file. Any suggestions?
How to go about getting the information to cut out the state of Texas and what kind a CNC machine what I need to do that how much would it cost
Would it be to make a cut out of college station’s taxes world speedway 3-D on a 2’ x 2’ board
Joe, I don't really understand what you are asking. I am not sure how to go about getting models for speedways or stadiums. I am sure it is possible, but I have never done it.
Tim, nice job all around. Sweet project, and I also think your camera work, editing, and voiceover all work very well. Good production quality. Looking forward to seeing more. SUBSCRIBED!!
High praise Bernie!
That's great, Tim. Did he like it? He wasn't smiling in the picture.
I hope so :).
Very Cool!. and a great time at The Catskills Makers Camp.
Cool. I like the epoxy fill for the water.
Thanks! Turned out nice!
Awesome! I've been really wanting to learn to do 3d topography carves but haven't tried to dive into it yet.
Boring Computer Stuff!??
Lol
