Just did a test run doing this. Lots to learn and I sure did learn a few tricks along the way. Next one will be even better.

I don't know why this doesn't have more likes after 2 years. Very informative and I used your lake vid to start trying to make one of my own area. Thanks for all the info!

When I need to glue two layers together that are both going to be painted, I completely mask off the lower layer and use the same offset that you used for marking, for cutting away the mask. Then, remove the negative, paint, and then remove the mask. Now you have a perfectly clean wooden surface for gluing, and the same alignment marks.

Fantastic instructional series, thank you. Unfortunately I've been trying to use snazzy maps for a few weeks and the editor is not working 😢

I have a laser engraver myself and think you did a great job. The rasterized roads and then vector street names really set apart the work well done.

Tim, Key West is my home town. I am getting my first laser machine soon (it's on order). This might not be my first project but it will be high on my list! I'll gladly buy the files to save me the hard work. Keep inspiring us!

This is fantastic Tim. Thank you for documenting all this work. I went down the GIS rabbit hole a while back and gave up. This approach is much simpler. In-laws now live at the beach, so i'm looking to make something like this for them.

GIS software is very very deep. I’m sure I could get the vectors out as dxf and clean them up, but it’s still a lot of work...

Thats awesome. Ive been shopping and Orion is on the list. Have you had any issues with it? Needed parts and availability of parts. Oh and do they have support? Thank you in advance

Scott Pratt no problems. Worked well out of the crate. In fact I just moved, and it showed up in the moving truck wrapped in a blanket on its side, with boxes stacked on top of it. Even tho I told them how sensitive it was. Worked like a charm. Didn’t even lose alignment...

Thank you for this video. Very helpful. However, I'm having issues finding my map on NOAA. All I found were coastal areas. Is it me or are the lakes unavailable in NOAA? Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks again

Noaa is federal. Most lakes are state jurisdictions. Really hard to find accurate maps outside boating and navigation apps…

How do you get the map loaded into the Snazzy Maps/Style editing page in the first place? I created a map and it is saved under "My Maps", but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to get it loaded so I can play with the attributes in the "Create a Style" pane.

Hi, great videos! The Department of Natural Resources has crude PDFs of most of the states' lake depth contours here in Minnesota. I am going to try and work them in with Google Maps. Two questions for you, do you know if Snazzy Maps changed what they allow free access to? I can't seem to access all of the settings that you can and the interface that I am seeing looks a little different. Two, do you know anything about the copyright uses of these images/data? Do you think that they are being changed enough to be considered original work and that copyright isn't an issue? Obviously, if you are night making something for fun or education it would be a consideration, but if someone were to market a map made with these images would there be any concerns? Thanks for your thoughts and sharing the videos!

It’s been a while since I’ve used snazzy maps. I know they used to change where to find those features and you had to hunt for them. As far as copyright, it’s murky at best. Google owns copywriters for the maps for sure, but making a laser map is not in danger of being mistaken for Google products…. I’ve never heard of anyone being sued for their use.

Hi Tim, your Videos are so great and phantastic. You spent a lot of time for your Projects and then you share all with us.Thats so great. I have one Tip for you, I am sure you know this by yourself but if you want that the engraving has more detail, than you could use Borax before you engrave the Wood. You can find a lot of Videos on UA-cam an the result is amazing. The Lines and all other has more depth an is darker. Maybe you can try by your next Project. Greetings from Germany.

    • @ThisIsHowIMadeIt

I haven’t tried the borax methods, but I’ve watched the videos. I was always concerned with handling the pieces a lot after cutting, which happens with these maps, and how easily it could wipe away before you seal them…

I'm thinking about getting into map making like this. Good info. Have you found a different/better way to make text more clear and sharp? Or whats a good size text to ensure clear reading from several feet away? Thank you for all your hard work. :)
