I will start off with this for starters, Thank you sir, for the awesome videos you make, I really enjoy them. I am a leather worker as well as a wood worker. I have been looking at adding a cnc to my small home shop and found the brand you are using and believe that will be the route I go. The first time I came across your channel was when you was at Dragon fly. Me being a wood worker and leather worker, I had made my won shop apron, but I really like her work and what they do. Its impressive. Anyhow, back to this video, you lost me my friend, I can tell by the way you talk about the routes paths etc, I need to learn a lot more, Im getting close enough in age to retire, but I dont give up easy and I love a challenge, so thank you again, this will be one of my shop additions this year, and know that you helped inspire me yo go ahead and do it. Thanks again and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale
Hi Dale - definitely give it a try. I have a Shapeoko 3 and the software they offer with it (carbide create/motion) is really straight forward. Watch the tutorials and play around with it and you will figure it out. I was hesitant at first, but have been doing projects almost daily now and it's really easy (you'll know what I mean once you start!).
Thanks for sharing this with us. I must say I like the idea, plus it gave me my own idea. While similar but different at the same time, that I intend to try now.
@@katzmosestools thanks for response! I look forward to the video! Also, totally random but the Katz-Moses shirt is by far my favorite one. The material is fantastic! Thanks for everything you do for the community.
As always a great video to inspire the rest of us to try something new with our CNC. California should be an interesting project for you with the mountains and coast line.
I love the way you deliver information, so please keep posting. Also, would you consider going through the workflow of taking a 3D-model/Sculpt from a package like Maya, Max, Blender, etc., or better yet, "ZBrush" and create a bas-relief from it?
Winston, if you are doing a 3d carve like this and need to put in a ballnose for a finishing pass, how do you rezero the ballnose bit if the original top of stock is removed? I don't have a bit setter. Thanks
Wait a minute....so you can machine a STL file? I though tI needed to turn it into a BREP and then a Solid.....if this is true, it changes everything....unless you forgot to tell us about a conversion. Sir Winston, please confirm.
I've been wanting to do a topographic carve for ages, always seemed to complicated in other videos, could you go through the hard way a little slower in another video? Thanks again
I have a CNC machine (700x400mm) and I would very much like to create a relief map, but I do not know how ... what programs should I use?!?! Otherwise, I work with ARTCAM. Please for help. Thanks in advance.
HI really very good video I thank you very much. I would like to make a map of Israel but I can not make the stl. could you help me? thank you . use the page that generates stl but when I open the file I get error
Thinking of doing something like that with Baltic Birch. The layers of ply would look good as elevation lines.

So looking forward to your video of the hard way!
A topographic map of Swedish mountains have been on my list of wanna-do-projects for a long time 😄
I'm currently working on doing this "the hard way", it's nice to see I was on the right track

I'd love to use this method with cities!
Nice job. I find a scotch brite pad works good to take those loose wood fibres off the top.
Great tutorial bud! trying now CNC. Will report back with results.
It's been a year, how'd it turn out?
@@andrewvahey3423 It's been a year since your comment and it went really well. Releasing a video on it today actually.

Awesome idea. I have only one suggestion - put tiny beautiful stone (1/8”) right on geographical location of your friends new house

nice to see you can do this with fusion
sweet! the file link isnt working, is there another link?
How about a topographic map of the entire United States as a much larger project - kinda like a puzzle when each state is that size
Great job, man!!! I wanted to make something like this for a long time. Will try soon. Best regards from Argentina
Thats wild, I would have never known to do that!

Wondering what’s in the blurred area at 5:48 on the left from where the sandpaper is lifted up
Japanese porn....(is what I'm thinking...not that I've ever seen any.....)
Great vid thanks! Is that a vacuum table or what did you use to fix it in place? Also nice telling Harvey Tool - I work there!

Either zero off the wasteboard, or keep a slice of material the same thickness as your original and throw it under the new endmill to reference.

You can machine meshes directly, but restricted to 3D toolpaths only.
Hola disculpe que programa usas para hacerlos modelos y en que formato se guardan por favor.
where did you find the 1/8" collet for the makita router??
Either Elaire Corp's Makita Style Router Collets or Carbide3D's precision collet set will work.

Love it!
Wow this is amazing! I'm having trouble getting the file in Fusion 360. What kind of program do you use before that?
Suggestions for where to get 3D .stl files?
You can always vcarve a handdrawing, just trace it in a program like illustrator convert it to vector and CAM it!
or Vectric's Aspire will do it as well
Nice gift
Do you still use/recommend using the Nitto permacel p-02 tape? If not what do you use now? Thanks.
Still using Nitto and loving it.
@@WinstonMakes Thanks! I ordered some, gonna give it a try this weekend.
Poligon reduction is a nice way to say it. This map is decimated to hell. A mountain should have more than 4 or 5 poligons
Grrrr... you’re doing too good you of a job... lol.... nice work!

Vectric's Aspire will convert the GEOTIff DEM to a vector file ready to go.
@@Mickeycuatropatas thanks, I can't wait ...
would be cool to do it with elevation map from a location on the moon. Let me know if you need any help finding data.
I love your vids and am inspired to get buck into the shed and blow the dust off of my shapoko 1

I'm not an expert on making your own STL (in fact, i strongly avoided that in this video). I would talk to Noah at Elevated Woodworking.
Not really sure that was simple lol. I'm wanting to do the state of kentucky.
Hi Winston, What kind of double tape are you using?
Flip flopping back and forth between 3M 410M and nitto permacel P02
@@WinstonMakes Thanks!
What software do you use to record your screen whilst working?
OBS Studio
Thanks! Keep up the good work!
I like it. Bye!
it is also possible to use a topography to stl conversion available online jthatch.com/Terrain2STL/
Ah yes, the handmade gift made by a computer and a machine.
