Thank you! I had moderate to severe Crohn's for years before going plant based, and now I am off all medications and still feeling great, years later.

Thank you for the information. I have mild Crohn’s. This probably goes without saying but the biggest things that help in my diet are avoiding high amounts of sugar, high amounts of grease in fast food, and high amounts of processed carbohydrates. If I just eat regular meat, vegetables, and basic drinks I’m usually good to go. But yes, the modern lifestyle of being sedentary and eating highly processed foods, absolutely contribute to the development and worsening of this disease.

Thank you for this video. I was diagnosed with UC in 2010 and enrolled in a research study. I was prescribed a steroid treatment and told by the lead researcher that some fortunate people managed up to 12 months in remission. I told him that I hoped I would be one of them!
The steroids worked and I felt better but over time I began to feel unwell again. I had a minor flare in 2013 and was prescribed a low dose Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drug which I still take. At this time I made changes to my diet and I became whole food plant based. The results are that since 2013 I have been sign and symptom free. My last colonoscopy was in 2013 and showed a normal colon, my twice yearly blood work is always normal and my inflammatory markers are low, or below the normal range. I consider myself cured. I still eat plant based but the occasional animal based food doesn't trouble me.
I often think of the researcher's comment about aiming for a 12 month remission! What would he say to an eleven year remission using only a low dose medicine and a WFPB diet? Thanks again and sending best wishes from the UK.

So, for someone who has UC, how long after switching to whole foods plant based diet would it take to, let's say, not have bloody diarrhea?

Interestingly Akkermansia repair disulfide bridges at the epithelial layer whereas Bifidobacterium may cleave them. This repair mechanism may break down with the increase in sulfurous species otherwise occupying bacteria that should be at the epithelial 'coalface'.

Excellent information. But what about the Crohn's patient who complains of symptom exacerbation with fiber. She knows she needs it in the long run, but it makes her worse in the short run and is afraid of it.

You have to go slow and grow.
Starting with a little bit of fiber and upping the quantity as the body adjusts to it.

@@devorahshulman go carnivore. One notable study from Harvard in 2021 surveyed over 2,000 participants and found that 97% of those with gastrointestinal issues, including IBS & Crohn's disease, experienced improvement or complete resolution of their symptoms after adopting the carnivore diet. The elimination of plant-based foods and carbohydrates is believed to play a significant role, as the carnivore diet removes potential triggers like FODMAPs. There are tons of testimonials when you search UA-cam for it.

I agree that you must give your colon time to adjust and for the helpful microbes to grow. I have a diagnosis of UC and I decided to make my own Sauerkraut to add to my WFPB diet. I ate a tablespoon every day but after four days my bathroom visits became a bit explosive! This frightened me but other Sauerkraut eaters told me that this is potent stuff and I was advised to abstain for a week and then add in a mere slither of Sauerkraut and to slowly increase the amount I ate every day and after a while I was fine. Btw I still make Sauerkraut occasionally and I can eat a lot without a problem even if I haven't eaten it for months. I assume the bugs that digest Sauerkraut are able to feast on all the other plant foods I eat and that keeps them happy lol. Incidentally I recently added more nuts to my diet and this also stressed my digestive system so I reduced the amount initially and have slowly increased and this has worked. I hope you find a regime that works for you and I wish you well.

Unfortunately, a wfpb diet didn't help me achieve remission. I already ate quite healthy when I was diagnosed a few years ago. ( I still eat this way) . At the moment I can't get rid of the extreme bloating whenever I eat or the diarrhea. I stopped taking immunosuppressants about a year ago. They didn't help either. Does anybody here have any tips? Is there anything that worked for you? Eating anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric didn't help me. If anyone here has been able to achieve remission without drugs, I'd be grateful for some tips. Thanks!

@@ChristiePriem I too read that emulsifiers, mono and diglycerides of fatty acids, maltodextrin and one other thing I'm forgetting would help with my Crohn's. To be fair, I've had a lot of improvement since avoiding them as much as possible, but not totally in remission.

Same here for me. But I did achieve remission for the first time in ten years (was vegan and whole foods based the entire time) thanks to Qing Dai, or “indigo” after I read an Israeli study on it. 40 year Crhon's/Colitis patient
    Some friendly advice
If you're gonna consider trying this diet please think about
C O O K I N G everything in the in the beginning. Eating raw veggies after a flair up can be disappointing and painful. Wash all vegetables thoroughly before cooking especially those that grow close to the ground.
    And just skip Spinach altogether.
If you take sulfasalazine type medication talk to your doctor about adding 800 mg Folic Acid daily to your meds program. Apparently sulfa drugs leach Folic Acid from the body. Per my G. I. Specialist
    Good luck to everyone 🤞 🙏 🤙

Hey, here is what helped me as a reproductive cancer survivor. I went whole foods plant based NO added oils/fats. Then I added 4 ounces tofu and 1 cup soy milk daily. Bingo, menopausal hot flashes bye bye. Processed soy foods don't work for this. Traditionally Asian women had almost zero hot flashes because of low fat mostly plant based diet and 2 daily servings soy. No cancer risk with soy. Buy organic soy. I like Trader Joe's high protein tofu because it isn't watery. Regular tofu needs pressing. Vegan tofu scramble starts my day right.

At moderate levels, hydrogen sulfide can protect the gut lining by promoting mucus production, reducing oxidative stress, and supporting tissue repair.

Hearing Norwitz talk about the study, the study design seems to suffer from selection bias and it was only a case series (so no control group). The results must be replicated in more people who are unfamiliar with carnivore and is best compared for standard diet (control), and WFPB.

The reason carnivore diets are good for Crohn's Disease is because it's Crohn's an autoimmune disease ie. if your immune system is strong, it will fight itself more. If your immune system is weak, it won't attack itself. Carnivore diets lack so many essential nutrients, like vitamin C, that your immune system suffers. That's literally what these drugs do; infliximab is an immunosuppressing drug designed to make your immune system too weak to attack itself.
Mikhaila Peterson - rheumatoid arthritis - autoimmune disease - eats nothing but meat - immune system gets weaker - she feels better.
If you can fight your gut inflammation using anti-inflammatory foods - like plant-based foods - you don't have to weaken your immune system to feel better. That's literally the entire explanation here: plants are largely anti-inflammatory and meats are inflammatory (look it up).

A pure carnivore diet could help in the short term but will make the condition worse in the long term.
