      I have both an N54 and an N55 in two different cars. The N54 has many reliability issues, but nothing catastrophic assuming you don't have turbo wastegate issues before 85k where they extended the warranty to and even then its not catastrophic. The N55 has less issues, but can have rod bearing issues - this is catastrophic and generally requires a new engine or a rebuild - ask me how I know :( . Another issue it can have eccentric shaft failure which can cost $4k plus to replace. But you are right that with the B58 they finally seem to have gotten in right, a nice evolution.

    TL;DR: it's not about history
    I find the B58 vs the 2JZ very similar to the FA20 vs the EJ25. Yes the EJ has been around for decades and yes there's more knowledge for EJ's, but the FA has a better top end, better stock turbo and better tuning potential. It's basically purists vs engineers, yes the FA also had downsides (the bottom end isn't that strong and the compression ratio is kinda high) and it wasn't put through the paces of motorsports but the knowledge learned throughout the EJ platform's lifetime is implemented into the FA's platform. You can scream and cry about how some things are better then others, but there was a time where the EJ25 and 2JZ sucked in the aftermarket department. If the drive to make the engine(s) better, it'll be better sometime down the road.

    BMW has made many flipping awesome engines, just not that many "recently". M30, M88, M54, S88, to name but a few, although all are straight 6's. For info, the BMW F1 engine used in the 1980's, with massive turbo's and producing up to 1,500BHP from 1.5litres, was built around old M10 standard road going engine. In fact the block was the "stock block".
    It's only the engines from the last 15 years or so that have tended to have "reliability" issues.

The 2GR-FE (3.5L V6) that they pretty much put on everything. Even on Lotus Exiges and Evoras. That engine is highly tunable and easily able to withstand 500sh HP. And it meets regulations. That last part with cars having to meet new emission standards is a fact that many people seem to overlook when comparing newer engines to old ones. They cannot simply build an exact replica of a 2JZ anymore, especially having a heavy iron block that would add unnecessary weight to the vehicle, and a reason why so many car manufacturers are using plastic components. • @hoost3056

    Nope......nope, nope, nope.
    The greatest engine BMW ever made, arguably, was the M10 four cylinder based engines. The M12 Formula 1 engine and the S14 engined M3 used the M10 as a base to kick butt and take names. And bonus, they didn't leak so much😆

    Too bad BMW put the cam gears on the same side you bolt to the transmission, meaning for anything related to timing you gotta pull the motor.
    Also that aluminum open deck block won't be able to handle much more than 800 bhp, the 2JZ is closed deck cast iron and has been known to make over 1500 bhp

    • @Kiyolani
      @Kiyolani 2 роки тому +7

      It's not open deck. I'm not sure why they showed an open deck image there. Check out a teardown of the engine. It's a closed deck.

    • @Enthusiastlist
      @Enthusiastlist 2 роки тому +3

      It’s based off the B57 diesel closed deck block which actually has a larger bore than the B58 so it has even more meat around the bore than a normal block would. Also we don’t live in the 90s, modern engines don’t go through timing chains left and right (looking at you Audi 4.2 & M62.) the timing chain guides should easily last 150k miles if not significantly more just like previous BMW inline-6s.

    • @mariuszanfir2298
      @mariuszanfir2298 2 роки тому +3

      I think Papadakis's B58 already has 1000HP on stock internals. Not sure how much more power the block would withstand, but stock vs stock internals, the B58 is stronger than the 2JZ, all while being ~60 kilos ligher.

    • @kylesebring
      @kylesebring 2 роки тому

      @@Enthusiastlist Ik they dont go through timing chains often, but if you want to tune the motor then youre gonna have to pull the motor to replace the cams, or do any other timing related mod.

    It is said that in order to create the 2JZ-GE / 2JZ-GTE engine TOYOTA just took YAMAHA'S work with the 1JZ-GTE / 1JZ-GTE engines, wich are said to be developed by YAMAHA. And then is the other rumor that YAMAHA just "took inspiration" (copied) the best features of a BMW 6 cylinder in line engine of that era. So, YAMAHA'S 1JZ is "inspired" in a BMW engine and the 2JZ is just TOYOTA's copy of YAMAHA's work (wich is a copy of BMW's work)
    So for the JZA80 Supra we got:
    The 2JZ-GTE has its block casted at an European foundry (Engine block cast made in Europe) Cylinder head is YAMAHA's work and manual transmission is a Getrag, wich is Made in Europe...

    I worked for bmw as a product specialist and can confirm the b58 is a beast and reliable. That motor had been updated almost yearly since it’s release in 2015, that’s right it’s 7 year old now! A word to the Toyota fans is that the mk4 ended the supra production because of terrible sales figures. If you want Toyota to keep production you’re going to have to go buy them brand new to support the company. Money talks. My wife works at Toyota and guess what, they sold less than 5 last year. This year so far 2.
