    While Against Me! might have a renewed sense of purpose in its focus on transgender topics, the band's instrumentation hasn't been exciting since As The Eternal Cowboy.

    So like, I feel that this album maybe resonates a lot harder if you've actually dealt with gender dysphoria? I think people shouldn't have expected this big tell all album from Laura, or expect her to suddenly come out with this big insightful piece that would resonate with everyone while also going into gender hard in each song. For me personally, being a transgender woman myself, this album hits me on an incredibly personal note all the way through. A lot of what you talked about seems much more focused on a difference in musical taste, and that's entirely fair, and from a technical perspective I suppose it'd be easy for you to judge. But from a lyrical and tonal perspective, this album I think is hard for a lot of people to really wrap their heads around, because what they expected isn't exactly what they got? Coming out and dealing with gender dysphoria doesn't suddenly mean you have all this insight and all these answers. It's just another thing in your life. A big thing, a thing that's incredibly affecting, but it doesn't mean you have any more information than anybody else. The fact that this album exists at all is kind of a big deal in and of itself, as albums about this kind of thing don't get the kind of publicity or are even released like this one was. She came out very publicly, and wrote the album about her feelings, and if you're trans a lot of the songs hit WAY harder than they would for you. For instance, Unconditional Love is fucking HEAVY, as the whole point of it is that even if your loved ones get behind what you're doing and love you no matter what and support you, that's often not enough to validate you to yourself, so you're just stuck in this cycle that no amount of validation can get you out of. Osama Bin Laden as the Crucified Christ has lines like "what's the best that you can hope for? Pitty fucks and tabelscraps," and speaks to the way trans women are often just used as fetishistic one night stands. There's a lot to these songs if you're trans is what I'm saying.

      I know this was commented 5 years ago but this video got recommended to me cause I was listening to the album. And everything you said is correct you're not going to connect too/feel/understand this music unless you have lived with or in these experiences yourself! I'm a non binary transmasc person and even though laura is mtf I still heavily relate to a lot of the music she writes because i've experienced what being trans is like people who get it, get it and people who don't don't that's really all there is too it.

      yeah no you’re right. Its not for him. As someone whos gender non conforming it really spoke to me. I also dont really know what hes on about with the folk influence going away, front of transgender dysphoria blues theres a train beat which is a country/folk beat in origin. The change from 16th to 32nd notes adds a folk punk twist still reigning true to their original music. Sure, it’s quite a bit more tame and I can understand this criticism but i feel like it makes more sense for what she was growing through. Also in 2014 f slur was probably much more normalized, when I heard that in the first song it felt like a heavy moment that really made me feel something. Also the tameness functions as a “pull of a curtain” to really shine on the lyrics I feel. You can tell the other members were pulling back for her, and I think that aspect of the record was overlooked. I do agree that I wish the recording was a little more roomy though, i think like a steve albini style production where it just sounds so cavernous and dark would’ve pushed these songs full potential. It’s AT LEAST. a 7.5/10 for me

    I personally feel that it is unfair to compare this album to AM!'s earlier work. While it is all under the same name, only Laura and James remain from the earlier line-ups. I feel this record works best if you forget everything you know about Against Me! - and I'm aware that may well be problematic for some people. But it's a new dawn for this band, and I am really happy this album exists.

    • @theneedledrop
      @theneedledrop  10 років тому +20

      I'm not just comparing this to AM! earlier work. I'm comparing it to everything I've ever enjoyed. That's the same treatment every record that comes across my ears gets. I have a hard time seeing that as unfair--especially since I manage to love dozens of records that come out every year. It's not like I'm impossible to please; it's just one man's opinion. As far as this record being a new dawn, maybe that's the case with the subject matter, but AM!'s sound is as uninteresting as ever, really.

    • @djywrites
      @djywrites 10 років тому +37

      The first half of the video is essentially "I like your old stuff better than your new stuff." So I definitely think you're comparing this album to their earlier work. Of course it's contextual, but given you spent so much time on the backstory here I find it peculiar that you wouldn't see how it could be interpreted as "Well, it's not their first EP so bleh."

    "transexual" and "dressing like or feeling they are a woman" are not correct terms. You cannot "dress like a woman" Theres no such thing as gender specific clothing. And a trans person doesn't "feel they are" a certain gender.... They just ARE. (I know this was 4 years ago, but the terminology hasn't changed)

      Yeah it's not a hard album to "get" if you're willing to imagine what it's like to be trans or dig into it a little. There's an unwillingness I see in a lot of cis people to allow themselves to understand trans people. It's like they're scared if they think about it too much they might become a "freak" too. Genuinely I think cis people have the capacity to understand how trans people experience gender. It's not hard to think "what if everyone treated me like something I'm not?" but they just refuse to.

    This review is months old now but I wanna say I actually really liked this album, despite the "tamer" sound compared to their older material. I actually thought the tamer sound was a nice change of pace for me personally, since i listen to mainly death metal and grindcore. I was also able to strongly relate with the album due to having gender dysphoria myself, which may have caused me to be a bit biased with my opinion on it. I also haven't been listening to Against Me! nearly as long as you Anthony, so even though I started with earlier material like Reinventing and The Eternal Cowboy the sound difference between the different 'eras' of the band may not have had nearly as big of an effect on me, and allowed me to find the album more enjoyable than you did.
    Personally the album makes for an 8 or 9 from me.

    Relisted to this album and remembered this review. Years later i hope this is is one of the reviews he has changed the most from. Even ignoring the deadnaming and bad description of transition he is fundementally wrong with just the point.
    The album was not made for cis people, you are not buying a ticket to a musical lecture. You came into an album made for trans people and criticized it for not speaking to you. and the problem is that this does change even the technical aspects, While i think things can be better and even agree in parts there are part where he believes he identifies a clear tonal miss match, but for those of us who are trans like Laura it perfectly matches and fits.
    This review isnt as bad as it could be but i hope he does understand that It isnt for him and it not enough to appeal to the cis ear maybe is an indication that maybe thats a statement in and of itself and he should try listening for what its trying to be not what he wants it to be

Coming out publicly in Rolling Stone and titling the album "Transgender Dysphoria Blues" were huge, risky steps and were likely intimidating enough as it was. Songs like Osama Bin Laden As The Crucified Christ might not be blindingly obvious, but it's got insane symbolism about how Laura felt she would be eviserated by everyone for her coming out, with lines like "What's the best you could hope for? Pity fucks and table scraps?". Also, the metaphor of "Benito hanging from the Esso rafters" is pretty clearly to me her being FIGURATIVELY crucified for her identity.

    Wut. Unconditional love is "obnoxiously sugary?" Did you even LISTEN to the album before you made this review?
    "Prison cell exercises, solitary sport entertainment
    What makes you think you're gonna die any different?
    Even if your love was unconditional
    It still wouldn't be enough to save me
    Don't worry, young suicides, the vultures will pick your bones dry
    Half digested and eternal, somewhere lost in the ephemeral
    Welcome to the future, an always ice-cold nightmare
    Burnt coffee and Percocets, yeah, this night, too, will end."
    You call THAT *obnoxiously SUGARY?!*
    "This wasn't the shocking tell-all album I was expecting." If you'd listen closely to it, this album is pretty shocking. Laura doesn't piss around the issues discussed in this album. Oppression, discrimination, violence, depression, and suicide are all major themes, although they're not done in a shock value way. They're real issues going on all around, and that's what she's trying to get across. Some of the music is a little tamer, but in terms of the message, this is by *far* Against Me!'s darkest album, in case the album art didn't tip you off. Also, it's not "Obama bin laden as the crucified christ," it's OSAMA.

      I think he meant more in terms of the structure and sound of the song, rather than the content, and in fact, the content makes his point all the more viable. The lyrics are so raw, telling, and uncensored, and the instrumentation and the song itself overall just don't seem to match that. The vocal melodies and harmonies are just so sing-songy, it kind of dulls the point that the lyrics are trying to make. I don't necessarily agree with him, but I can tell where he's coming from.

    I have a feeling it will grow on you. This is the first Against Me album I've listened to, so I'm learning looking at them from a different perspective, but I personally loved this album. Unconditional Love was actually my second favorite track, next to Black Me Out.
    Now you gotta review The 1975 before it's too late.

    I've listened to it so many times front to back. The first time I heard it, it was a little different hearing what Laura 'now' sounded like, not much different than previous records but she does sound different. And a good kind of different. My favorite tracks are Drinking with the Jocks, Osama bin Laden..., Paralytic States and Black me out. It took me a few listens to actually get into it but I feel it's to me stronger than White Crosses. The opening track gets me really geared-up. The drums banging like a horse galloping just made me excited. And the hard bassline in “Osama Bin Laden...” was a jaw opener. I was just like “wow this is my favorite song already” and with the closing track Black Me Out, which I heard acoustically first was something I was looking forward to in the studio version. I wasn't disappointed with how it turned out. Not in the least bit. I think if I had to pick a song that was a weak-point it would be Two Coffins. Which When listening to the LP, I never noticed the transition of Dead Friend and Two Coffins, it almost blended too well for me. Like “Oh is this one long song?” Maybe by that time I was zoning out. Or maybe because they kinda touched on the same subject. But that's not to say it's a bad song. It's good! Comparing this to their other records is kinda hard. I want to but I almost feel it's unfair because in a way it's like a “new beginning.” Sure, I already said it's stronger than White Crosses but only because it was their most recent release (Excluding Black Crosses). Anyway, as an Against Me! Fan, I'd give this a generous.... 8/10

    I actually got into Against me! with their newer records...and I love them. I love their older stuff too.....but I gotta disagree.....I don't agree they've got "tamer" I mean people get older....doesn't mean their views change but like she said before how she always saw the world in a very black and white way but when you get older that starts to grey.

    A couple of strong tracks on here, but I do agree, kind of middling overall. Reinventing Axl Rose is still a fantastic album, but I've liked very little of their other work since then.

    jesus christ i couldn't disagree more with this review. the record is their rawest and grittiest in years. the songs you pinpoint as weak and sugary are incredibly raw lyrically. I don't get you dog. This shit is so good. the record is fucking brilliant. CRITICS.

      oh, c'mon. the music is about as plain jane as modern punk gets. i'm talking about a lack of grit in the sound, not the lyrics. the lyrics are fine. i have no issues with the lyrics. they're not quite as poetic, dramatic as early against me, but definitely not a major issue.

      theneedledrop I fully agree with this response. it's bland, I wish it was courageous, the title, the topic, and the band filled me with hope. the sound itself was generic and bland. you have so much to speak about on the topic and felt it was amenic.

  • @lagrilladetelecero
    @lagrilladetelecero 10 років тому +1

    I totally agree with you on this one. Altough I loved the New Wave album (I like some pop in my punk sometimes and that album is filled with great post-punk moments too) I really couldn't say the same about what came after, like white crosses I also think that such a big production doesn't do any favour to Aganst Me's music, and tough this one doesn't sound so polished, it surelly sounds bland and tame except for those songs you mention (my favourites too, BTW). I expected a lot more! Gonna check those first albums you mention too (didn't knew anything before Reinventing...)

    I definitely agree with your point regarding the vocal delivery. When I read through the lyrics I was shocked at how dark they were because that wasn't the vibe that I picked up at all. I find that on the post-Axl Rose albums by them there are always a few songs I really love, personally so far I think Paralytic States is my favorite track, more for the narrative than for anything else.
