London calling is a solid 10, no question. I’ve wanted a full review of it for classics week since I discovered your channel. Might be my fav album period, of all time. Absolutely perfect
Holden H London Calling has been with me since I was born. That album is part of who I am and it seems to me that London Calling has made a mark on a lot of people and it just impresses me how that record unites people from all over the music listener spectrum!
This was the album that got me into The Clash. When I had my piece of shit car as a 16 year old, I started a CD collection. I knew of The Clash, so when I saw London Calling for 5 dollars on CD, I snagged it. Never listened to the album before then. Its one of my all time favorites now, 10 years later. I also snagged a bone white vinyl of The Clash live in Japan, 1980, and I havent been able to find that album anywhere online. It was an import vinyl. I love that thing.
I like Sandinista! a whole lot- like you said the great and even good songs hold up and have become a lot of my favorites over time. I really love Washington Bullets, Up In Heaven, Somebody got Murdered, Let's go Crazy, Song for Sinners, Junco Partner, Corner Soul and The Leader. I think the sound of the record is interesting and has more heart than it reveals at first. I always loved how Mick Jones said he rationalized the album was meant for people who worked on oil rigs who could only bring one album.
My favorite album of theirs as well. Rebel Walt’s is excellent as well. I think this is a very good album that at present has aged like fine wine. Of the thousands albums I have listened to this is in my top 20
I hate when I walk in the kitchen to make breakfast and Anthony is drinking my OJ from the carton humming “rock the casbah..rock the casbah..” after hearing him slam my mom all night.
KageTV exactly! i love bands like the clash and the stranglers because they were embracing and experimenting with the sounds of hip hop way earlier than you would think in retrospect. the gospel according to the meninblack album has so many moments in it that sound completely out of time and hint at things that would come 10 or 15 years down the road in electronic music. i’d love to see a stranglers tier list from someone, but they’re a bit more obscure and i’m not sure if anthony is even a fan
hypnotizingchickens The stranglers are local band for me because they are from Guildford. Golden Brown is such a quirky song because of the harpsichord
I wonder where Melon would place the US release of the self-titled It has "Complete Control," "(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais," "Clash City Rockers," "Jail Guitar Doors" and "I Fought the Law." Way better than the UK release.
Yeah. I haven't heard the UK release, but the US release is an easy A or an S for me. The UK tracklisting looks like more of a straightforward early punk album than the US version.
Wow, I'm almost shocked on your remarks The Clash. They make no sense. Nevermind the Bollocks doesn't sound anywhere close to as angry as this particularly because The Sex Pistols are noticeably less sincere. Almost everything the debut takes on are still relevant today.

here is my ranking: S: London Calling A: Sandinista (could be S tier if cut down to only the more essential tracks) B: The Clash C: Combat Rock D: Give Em Enough Rope E: F: Cut the Crap
Galaxelen I guess sound diversity is a pretty big factor in my rankings. I definitely see Sandinista as having the most which is one reason why its my favorite album of theirs. I really really enjoy the self titled album, but they all have pretty much the same sound so that's why it's a B on my list. I will say that if I ranked more by how good all the songs on the album are I would agree with you more, pretty much every song on the self titled album is great and Sandinista is really bloated with a lot of crap.
"Give 'Em Enough Rope" is criminally underrated. I'm convinced part of the reason is that everyone knew that CBS brought on Blue Oyster Cult's producer too deliver a more polished product, so some fans think it's not hip to like that album too much. "Cut The Crap" was a terrible album but This Is England is great song despite the rest of the record. It's also worth noting that there's actually two versions of the debut album, UK version and US version with different song listings on each. The US version replaces some of the songs with later singles like White Man in Hammersmith, etc. Again, because CBS thought the original version was "too raw."
Fun fact: there were only two punk singles at the time of the Clash’s debut: Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the UK” and the Damned’s “New Rose.” They primarily listened to reggae. Also, I loooove Sandinista! my fave album of theirs
Not true, American punk come first with Iggy and the Stooges, and the New York Dolls. I Wanna Be Your Dog came out as a single in 1969. Personality Crisis/Looking For A Kiss was released in 1973. Sid Vicious and Johnny Thunders got the idea to rip their shirts up and wear close pins on them from Johnny Thunders who was in the New York Dolls. You should read Please Kill Me by Gillian McCain and Legs McNeil. It's a history of the origins of the punk scene in America. Way before the Clash or the Damned.
Anderson Cooper I don’t feel like repetitive can really be used as a knock on the song if you like The End which is ten minutes of mostly the same riff.

I love The Clash and London Calling helped form my outlook on music, but I think a lot of Clash fans would enjoy Mick Jones' new wave/dance outing in his band Big Audio Dynamite. This is Big Audio Dynamite is one of my favorite albums ever and I'd love to see Anthony at least give it a mention. Medicine Show and Bad are some true bangers.
S: London Calling and Combat Rock A: Sandanista B: give em enough rope I haven't actually listened to the rest but these were all essential records of my childhood. And I don't mean teenager, I mean being like 4 years old and my dad playing these to me. London Calling was my first album ever.
thanks for doing this video!!!! I've been wanting you to do something on the clash forever, especially Sandinista! I agree with a lot of your opinions on it but I would put it as an A tier, especially if you were to take out some of the "unnecessary" tracks. there are some really amazing tracks on this and the diversity and ambitiousness is really exceptional especially for a punk band of their era. I definitely do think that a London Calling quality album is hidden within the totality of what was released and i think about it all the time lol. I've ranted about it probably more than anybody ever has. again, so glad you did this video and GREAT to hear your thoughts on this album, very happy to hear you saw the same potential in it that i do!!!!!
I’m So Bored With the USA is one of my favorite Clash songs and not sloganeering IMO. Career Opportunities, Remote Control also great and London’s Burning a top 5 song in their catalog. So their debit is a solid B for me.
I feel like the clash kinda fell out of fashion in terms of conversations being had about them online in the last several years. But for anyone just starting to dig into classic records London calling is about as perfect as you can get
Duncan Darnell I’m sure people will disagree with me but for my personal taste I’d check out pink flag by wire zen arcade by Hüsker du and entertainment by Gang of Four. I feel like those fit that “acclaimed artsy” punk mold that London calling falls into and people kinda stopped talking about them
@@slinkingslug Classic UK Punk: The Members first two albums (1979/1980) - these guys are hugely underrated I reckon and I think were good pals with the Clash, also lots of reggae influences here and there. Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material. Skids - Dunfermline. Rezillos - Can't Stand The Rezillos, these guys are kinda like super early pop punk but I love it. The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette, amazing album but tbh I think the horrible production sort of spoils it. Oh and The Ruts! (first two albums)
Bowie more than deserves it, it would be a crime if Anthony doesn't make a tier list. But with saying that: Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Low, Blackstar, Station To Station & Heroes all S tier Scary Monsters, The Next Day & Aladdin Sane all A tier

I didn't think I wanted this video as I thought I knew how people felt about Clash's discography as a whole but I like your fresh take on some of these albums. This is also the first group for me that you've covered on these teir lists that I'd have an album on the s teir and an album below a C teir.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LONDON CALLING. 40 YEARS OLD ON SATURDAY. GREAT WAY TO CASH IN ON THE GREATEST ALBUM OF THE 80S. LONDON CALLING (b. Dec 14th 1979) RIP JOE
I love the ridiculousness of Sandinista! One pop song with its dub B-side right after it, children singing, disco drums-it’s super fun and serious at the same time. Basic opinion tho: “Rock the Casbah” is their best song period 😤
Sandinista is not a B- Sandinista has easily some of the clashes best deep cuts. Sure it’s a billion tracks long but the songs that are great on Sandinista are A tier

S: London Calling and Combat Rock
A: Sandanista
B: give em enough rope
I haven't actually listened to the rest but these were all essential records of my childhood. And I don't mean teenager, I mean being like 4 years old and my dad playing these to me. London Calling was my first album ever.
You’re really only missing the debut. If you ever listen to it make sure it’s the US release has more tracks
Never mind the bullocks was their sophomore album...closely followed by never mind the bollards when the pistols became an 18 piece jazz outfit
Steely Dan tier list would be dope
thanks for doing this video!!!!
Sandinista is the White Album of The Clash. All over the place, some fantastic stuff, some weird stuff, but a masterpiece nonetheless.
Remember lads, Lock the Taskbar.
Jamie Waller-jones cherry don’t like it
When the fuck are we getting a Pink Floyd worst to best or tier list Antoine?
Combat Rock in C? What?
I’m So Bored With the USA is one of my favorite Clash songs and not sloganeering IMO. Career Opportunities, Remote Control also great and London’s Burning a top 5 song in their catalog. So their debit is a solid B for me.
I'm gonna not even watch the whole thing and tell you right now that "SANDINISTA!" is one of the greatest albums of all time.
I feel like the clash kinda fell out of fashion in terms of conversations being had about them online in the last several years. But for anyone just starting to dig into classic records London calling is about as perfect as you can get
Other suggestions for classic punk?
Duncan Darnell I’m sure people will disagree with me but for my personal taste I’d check out pink flag by wire zen arcade by Hüsker du and entertainment by Gang of Four. I feel like those fit that “acclaimed artsy” punk mold that London calling falls into and people kinda stopped talking about them
@@slinkingslug DK's Fresh Fruit and Plastic Surgery are great
@@slinkingslug Classic UK Punk: The Members first two albums (1979/1980) - these guys are hugely underrated I reckon and I think were good pals with the Clash, also lots of reggae influences here and there.
You gotta do a David Bowie worst to best, I think he deserves a worst to best
Bowie more than deserves it, it would be a crime if Anthony doesn't make a tier list.
But with saying that: Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Low, Blackstar, Station To Station & Heroes all S tier
Scary Monsters, The Next Day & Aladdin Sane all A tier
Furious Styles diamond dogs slept on
Yeah we must have a bowie worst to best
Yesterday, I searched up “Anthony Fantano The Clash” to see not so many results. Today I wake up to see this video in my recommended. Thanks Anthony!!
Cut the Crap is overall terrible but "This is England" is one of their best songs
Didn’t even mention that there’s two different versions of the first album. UK & US releases had several different songs between them.
I’d actually love to see music discussion in the comment section other than stupid comments
Please! All these niggas wanna do is suck "boomer" dick by asking for the same tired Floyd or Beatles tier list. This is why most of the better convos happen on Deep Cuts' channel.
Let's discuss it
NINE INCH NAILS TIER LIST PLEASE
i listened to London Calling for a bit
then i let it go straight to voicemail
Hey Dad!
Thank you for doing this. This is my all time favorite band, I've been obsessed with them since the 1980's. They introduced me to rap and Caribbean music.
One of these days we are going to find Melon in the store buying Smirnoff and Marlboro
Love the variety this dude does, The Clash are one of my dad's favourite bands so they bring back many great memories for me 😊
The interviews with Strummer around the time of "Cut the Crap" are heartbreaking....
Cut the what? Never happened.
I didn't think I wanted this video as I thought I knew how people felt about Clash's discography as a whole but I like your fresh take on some of these albums. This is also the first group for me that you've covered on these teir lists that I'd have an album on the s teir and an album below a C teir.
Sandinista is one of the greatest records period for me. The clashes best.
Theres so much to explore and its all wonderfull. Its a trip. It takes you through a landscape
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LONDON CALLING. 40 YEARS OLD ON SATURDAY. GREAT WAY TO CASH IN ON THE GREATEST ALBUM OF THE 80S. LONDON CALLING (b. Dec 14th 1979) RIP JOE
Fantastic tier list. Genuinely agree with every placement. At most id move give em up one
I love the ridiculousness of Sandinista! One pop song with its dub B-side right after it, children singing, disco drums-it’s super fun and serious at the same time.
Basic opinion tho: “Rock the Casbah” is their best song period 😤
Nick Cave tier list!!!
Combat Rock is underrated.
The Clash: B
Give ’Em Enough Rope
: B+
London Calling: S
Sandinista: B-
Combat Rock: A
what about cut the crap
@@johnbarraza4349 G
Sandinista is not a B- Sandinista has easily some of the clashes best deep cuts. Sure it’s a billion tracks long but the songs that are great on Sandinista are A tier
@@flyingsloth730 Sandinist as an album just does no get there--trim it down and you'll get an A, but as it was released no
Do a list for Roxy Music next. SO underrated and overlooked.
Makes you realise that the clash had lots of great tracks that never made it to any album
1977
Jail guitar doors
Capital radio
1-2 crush on you
Complete control
White man
Etc etc
No mention of Lee Perry. Just comment that some tracks were reggae "tinged"
Hey Fantano about you have a go at Paul Weller’s discog including The Jam and The Style Council? Would love to see how you rank everything
