This could actually be an interesting concept for a map... Start at the end, walk back through the hordes as a dead guy, then pick up a health bonus or a megasphere and have to go back and complete the map. Takes away a lot of the element of surprise but if you have a map with a lot of traps it could still be entertaining and challenging. Not sure how you'd pull it off though

HappyBeezerStudios - by Lord_Mogul Nope. Go to the end of the map, with the megasphere and blue keycard behind it (make it so you HAVE to grab both simultaneously). When the keycard is grabbed, the doors open to reveal the monsters. Really good idea
Maybe after the player crosses a certain linedef, an Archvile that doesn't count towards the kill% gets released into the arena.

The part where you "die" but still alive is a good one, you can make stealth maps with this; like a place full of demons and a lot of health around so if you picked up one you're basically dead you would have to maneuver around and do things slowly

Seven years ago I made a counter (from 0 to 50) on a large map with many rooms and tricky questions in them. In the final room there is a digital indicator that displays the number of correct answers. This counter uses two conveyors woth voodoo dolls, each controlling one decimal digit.

So, has anyone made a WAD where, if you die, you turn into a "zombie" rather than lose? I feel like that would be a really interesting mechanic to play around with.

Well, uh... for starters, that would mean that for the rest of the map (or until any of the bodies dies and the player can reload) you can't use weapons. At all.
That *might* be fine however if you find some way of entertaining the player besides combat.
Also, remember, in order for the zombie glitch to occur, damage is spread between multiple bodies so none of them die but your HP is 0.
Meaning you have to damage a voodoo doll off-screen with a barrel first and make sure that the player picks up *no* health. Then, when the player takes enough damage, they zombify.
Also, only monsters that haven't yet seen you will ignore you.
If a monster already saw you when you were still completely alive, they will not ignore you zombified.
There's also the fact that you can use level transitions while dead unless a compatibility feature is enabled.
@@TheBreakingBenny the final level for a wad, the history could be that doomguy kinda dies but his willpower and rage alone, make it so his dead corpse becomes a zombie to finish the mission

I remember a wad "Hell on Earth Super Tiny Edition" that recreates Doom II limiting player movement to a 64x64 square while allowing larger outside geometry with monsters and items uses voodoo dolls to kind of circumvent limits and facilitate player grabbing keys and items or reaching exit teleporter outside of the movable area.
Clever!
Imagine a deathmatch game mode where you didn't have to shoot enemy players, but their moving voodoo dolls.

He doesn't, and it's not a mod. It's a status bar face glitch that has to do with the hierarchy the engine uses to choose the face graphic. I'm planning to make a video about the status bar face soon.

I remember when I played Doom on phone, whenever I closed and then opened the app again the Doomguy always smiled at the first thing picked up, be it an item or a weapon, while on PC he's never done such a thing, strange
He does that for me when playing Chocolate Doom. If I load a save, he'll grin at the first item picked up. Don't even have to close the game out. ..so I'm pretty sure vanilla was the same.
You won't see the save/load doomed fellow face glitch in many of Despacito's videos, except for that stream

Now that I think about it, I remember looking at the Doom Wiki and noticing every Eviternity level had lots of voodoo dolls.
The Boom engine allows a lot of stuff. It's still very advanced and highly used, 22 years after its release.

I love when map makers (and game developers in general) make this complex Rude Golberg-like machines in order to create very simple contraptions (such as timers). It is so entertaining to know said mechanism from the backstage.
We might see non-gimmick voodoo dolls in Doom whenever Bloom gets more updates.
I know going down uses voodoo dolls extensively for scripting.
I love these analysis videos, what makes them so compelling is that you're obviously just satisfying your own curiosity and then reporting to us the fascinating results of your own passionate enthusiasm. That sort of thing is powerful content.

Seeing the thumbnail, I'm not gonna lie, I thought this was going to be some weird explanation of how the voodoo doll in blood works, and then showing some crazy hackery to recreate it in vanilla doom. This ended up being way cooler. I had no idea these existed.

With some editor tool I discovered this voodoo doll thing and tried some many where you would have literally a countdown (an imp roasting the doll) to end the level. Well it went no where but can't recall if it was because of the concept or because of the always dying map after trying to add some platforms.

Huh neat. I always thought these dolls were a boom thing. I may have to look into my own ways to use these.. I'm already using mods in hidden sectors to create 'sound effects' that has a crushing ceiling to kill them for you after a while. It's made for some fun moments and foreshadowing. You hear an archvile but never see it.

If a Voodoo doll dies, but the player had more health than 100, the player enters a sleep paralisis. (one being aware, but unable to move)

Voodoo dolls will also be invulnerable. Monsters ignore voodoo dolls.

They get knocked back when invulnerable, yes.
I'm yet to try voodoo dolls in any project. Might take a while for me to test this though. I need to get a better grasp of mapping in general first.

I have been holding off on developing a Zandronum/GZDoom-compatible Mod that features interchangeable player Characters. It's like this: everyone, including enemies, is a glass cannon. You have a lives limit (which gets one-ups bestowed according to score and "get-out-of-jail-card" resurrection abilities to offset the challenge), which is shared among three companions, each with very limited weapons and abilities that are agreed upon before tackling the map.
Each character behaves as players but accept some basic AI controls such as how close or far they stay with the player-controlled character, whether they are attacking, staying in place, following, et cetera. But the best part is that the player may switch between each Character, assuming manual control. Then the other characters will obey your orders. This allows for fine-tuned navigation or even switching to another character on the other side of the map!
One of the abilities I envision being used is a "Bi-Location" trick in which you get two characters that are respectively identical twins, except that when one dies, the other may press on (another version of the ability works just like a Voodoo doll in that both sides share damage, which requires very precise strategy and coordination).
Voodoo doll handling might just get a minor revolution if I manage to somehow succeed. The abilities will be the hardest to code.
