I used to think: “partial invisibility is only half invisible, so if I were to pick up two I would be fully invisible!” And so I went to the last level of doom, entered one try command for invisibility twice, had only a pistol and immediately got wiped out
holy shit, yeah i never bothered using berserk packs in the game because I was like "eh, who cares if I can punch hard for 20 seconds". I never realized the effect sticks around.
I think the most interesting part to me was how invulnerability and godmode are considered totally different but it only matters in that one specific case (minus the screen effect) and that they technically just block 1,000 damage rather than totally blocking all damage. That plus the telefrags dealing 10,000 damage were really interesting. First I've heard of any of that. "How much damage does a telefrag do" is never something I've ever thought about in any game, it's always just been taken for granted that it instakills you outright but at least in Doom if you could somehow get more than 10,000HP then you would survive a telefrag since it is just a damage source like any other.
The Zandronum source port, and possibly GZDoom as well, have a "god2" cheat that makes the player invulnerable to telefrags. Most likely by raising the player's damage immunity beyond 10,000.
@@Bomblastic49 Nice, I didn't know about the "god2" cheat! You get the message "Ultimate degreelessness mode on"! There's always something new to learn!
If you remember doom 1 episode 4(thy flesh consumed) map 2 had a cuberdemon trapped behind a low wall. The trick was to rush down to the start of the level, 5o teleporter and telefreg the cyberdemo instead of wasting ammo. I didn't even know either until recently about telefreg in the original DooMs engine.
I've been playing Doom since I was a small child back in '94 and I NEVER knew that the extra fist damage from Berserk lasted beyond the red screen. My mind is blown.
Yup. IIRC it does theoretically run out if you stay in the level long enough, but it’s over a year or something ridiculous like that so for all practical purposes it never times out
They made every effort to make it seem that way. The red screen even flashes as if to warn you that it's about to run out. They probably intended for it to run out and either made a mistake in the code or changed their minds and never fixed the red screen.
I watched a streamer play Doom recently and she was _convinced_ that berserk only lasted until the red screen faded, and that until then she couldn't switch weapons. I swear I rolled my eyes every time she - very reluctantly - picked up a berserk pack.
@ShoeUnited Oops! Oh, well. If you think I'm going to fix it after all this time, then you got the wrong idea. Gotta, man up and roll with the punches.
Its usefulness really depends on the map design being built with it in mind, and it's rather difficult to design a level around being too dark to see shit unless you can find a specific power up without pissing the player off. Not to mention that gamma correction exists even in vanilla DOOM as a workaround to see in dark maps, and GZDoom and maybe even other source ports offer a lot of options for adjusting lighting. Oh, and the goggles break any attempt at atmosphere while they're in effect, which is not very helpful to the map designer. It's easier on the map designer to just keep the brightness just high enough that the light goggles are kinda redundant without sacrificing atmosphere or design the map in a way that you always have a bright area in sight to go to, and players have methods of debatable cheesiness to be able to see in dark areas with or without the goggles. So yeah, I would say the goggles are the least useful power up everything considered. I know I'm months late, but I wanted to say it.

I don't like how some ports "fix" the invulnerability effect by making it affect the sky because that makes it harder to see things.
If i recall, the GBA port replaced it with a blue filter.
D64 made it different and i prefer the way how it handle it, since there's still colors and it's not so far away from the Doom 1 version.
I liked how Doom 16 gave power ups timers to indicate the time left and the colors around the screen without affecting the center.
Happy new year to you and yours Decino. Onward to more wads
0:12 “Jesus Mode” XD
ahh sweet... you dropped another gem on us
love these videos
BigMacDavis will need to do a supplementary video about health and armour bonuses. Also how delicious they are. Did you see this week he was playing the master levels and at the end before finishing realised he was missing an item. He spent several minutes retracing his steps before he found the solitary health bonus hidden in the dark. Then and only then could he exit
Loved the new nicknames for the items they were really funny!
Decino:- "Jesus Balls."
Me:- 🤦

Please, aviod insulting UAC appliance with any kind of Apple products in the future.
Jokes aside, red tint during berserk actually does something helpful. Your screen won't flash red when you're hit. Maybe this effect was concidered the main one for some reason
The red tint presence is something like the partial invisibility in reverse - if there are just things that will hit you from time to time without much problems to follow, it's ok. But if there is a hiding chaingunner (or a few of) and you are on a secret hunt or just make too much sounds to cancel out the pain one - that's a way to get scammed :)
Happy new year, decino.
This was a fun year watching your videos and streams.
The one thing that make me laugh out loud so hard (and everyone else here probably), the first time, is hearing 'Jesus Mode' and 'Mancubus Balls' with earphone. XD
