Bobby Prince said: ”For his death sound, I recorded a young girl saying 'why,' pitch shifted it down and mixed it with other sounds. The Archvile just doesn't understand why anyone would want to kill him as he sees himself as only doing good for his fellow demon."
If all he did was resurrect demons like some sort of medic, I would understand this interpretation but he had to go all flame boi on us. That's why! I scream as I stomp his bloody corpse.
@@Vistico93 He thinks he's helping people get to his picnic via his firey attack & resurrection. He believes he's doing good & wrapping people in his warm love. Think Pyro from the TF2 character video series :-)
Really? And all this time I thought it did sound like a really garbled "why," and also assumed that in all seriousness I had to be wrong about that interpretation but whatever, it's my own little joke. And now it turns out... I was wrong about being wrong. Also, wow, the creators were really all over the place on that one. On one hand whoever named it and wrote the manual treated the arch-vile as extra evil, and on the other a sound designer saw it as the most relatively benevolent of all them all. That interpretation makes me wonder if there was a point in development where they only resurrected other demons and that's what he went with, since being perfectly happy to murder Doomguy on sight and any demon that so much as sneezes at them makes that view of the arch-vile's self-image a lot harder to justify. In light of not just resurrecting, but also attacking and being the most vengeful of all, it either makes no sense at all, or they have a truly warped interpretation of their own actions that sees both resurrection AND murder as equal acts of pure benevolence. ...Which would actually be kinda cool for how the evilest and most magically adept demon thinks, now that I think about it.
In DOOM Eternal there is explained that the Arch-Vile is feared because of it's ability to manipulate lower beings (such as other lesser-ranked Demons) to it's will. That way there are two extra explanations: 1. The Demon fears to attack the Arch-Vile back because that may anger it more. 2. Arch-Vile has manipulated the Demon to not fight back.

While I love (and to hate) the Arch-Vile in DOOM Eternal, I didn't really like how the demon often remained stationary during attacks. In combination with their startling sound file and speed, they always know where you are once aggroe'd, and will be next to the closest wall to you if they can't physically reach you. And you did mention how other demons wont attack them back, don't forget that means the Archvile will beat both Spider Mastermind and the Cyber Demon 1v1. The Archvile is the ultimate doom demon! Nice video :)
Arch-vile is awesome. He the only enemy every doom player is STILL terrified of. Gotta give him credit for that. He does suffer from being used very poorly in many many many many slaughtermaps. But in well-designed maps Archies work wonderfully well.
DOOM 5's Marauder only manage to intimidate first timers and the mortally challenged. The tell-tale laugh of an Arch-Vile still strikes terror in all who know them.
@@expendableround6186 tbf marauders in a chaotic environment are still painful since they’re good at giving you tunnel vision, so they are good for making relatively tame encounters significantly harder rather than being scary on their own. That’s honestly not so different from Doom 2 Archviles come to think of it.
I so do not regret subscribing to your channel. I've been playing DooM for over twenty years now and I still learn something with every video you put out. I thought I knew it all and every time I learn something new, it's pleasantly mind blowing and simultaneously humbling. Keep 'em coming, man! One time i used an archie to get through the final level of a wad, since if the boss dies the level will end even if you're dead, and the boss will never retaliate. It felt good
Yes, they definitely pixel edited the Arch-Vile after video recording it, same as the other monsters. That's how they get pixel-perfect eyes, dead-on gun barrels, etc. (Also how they enlarged the Spider-Demon's gun, especially obvious because they missed a few rotations so it shrinks to a ridiculous degree from the side.)
I actually never knew that that wall face was an Archvile's, let alone that he had anything resembling a face. Always saw it as parts of his face glued together with the side of his teeth barely visible.
@@decino Coincident is a good youtuber Mr. Decino, he makes content like yours and posts stream highlights on his channel. Also like you he has a very nice accent.
I heard the Archviles were supposed to be something like demon medics at first, its deathscream being a warped "Why?" because it's like why are you murdering a doctor? I wonder if an archvile variant could be coded that doesn't use a flame attack but is capable of directly seeking out enemy corpses instead of finding them by accident, making it dangerous because it's really good at resurrecting.
I remember reading up about what exactly a ghost monster was. Then one day, I was playing the No rest for the Living maps, and had one happen. One kf the more thrilling moments. An imp corpse got crushed by a door, left 'crushed guts' pile. Got resurrected by an archvile. Boom, ghost monster. I think a better way it was stated is the crushed remains have a height set at 1 or 2 units high. And it resets to be flagged as non solid. So the monster is resurrected as being 1 unit tall, but with regular monster sprite. Only way to kill it is with splash damage, or crushing ceiling. Great video again. Makes me want to play DooM over and over again
And imagine if the resurrected Arch-Vile were to be a ghost monster after being crushed. That would be a serious pain due to ammo going through them and luring them to the wall is more of a chore.
Ah, my favourite enemy! About the revive-radius, it never factors the y-position for distance? I have yet to see how they implement it in Doom Eternal, will be interesting to see.
@@decino I must admit, I was somewhat confused in Doom 2016; why they introduced a new type of enemy that was 50 percent Arch-vile and call it something different.
they probably didnt want to name it archvile because they didnt want to lock such an iconic name to a creature that just isnt a real archvile. Id also be a bit disappointed if it was just a summoner reskin... i mean, i dont expect a hitscan attack, since thatd interrupt the flow of the game, but at least resurrecting instead of summoning would be nice.
nah, that doesn't summarize the video at all, he explained so much more than just "they are bad", he explained really cool ways to dodge their attacks and how their attacks are calculated and so on. but I get that you were just trying to be funny

4:55 HOIYL FUC! I'm dying from the comedy of this bit.
"Remember back in Doom 2 when we had to fight two Archviles that _one_ time? Those were good days..."
@@expendableround6186 tbf marauders in a chaotic environment are still painful since they’re good at giving you tunnel vision, so they are good for making relatively tame encounters significantly harder rather than being scary on their own. That’s honestly not so different from Doom 2 Archviles come to think of it.
very cool
4:53 "WHEEE!" lmao that's too funny
They're actually saying "yeet"
I so do not regret subscribing to your channel. I've been playing DooM for over twenty years now and I still learn something with every video you put out. I thought I knew it all and every time I learn something new, it's pleasantly mind blowing and simultaneously humbling. Keep 'em coming, man! You continue to expand our knowledge and knowledge is the best weapon you can lend to your fellow marines! :P
these analysis videos are great - fun, to the point and very informative.
decino, thank you for making them!

"Holy mackerel"
Nice to see that reference when we're talking about the pissed-off martian.
One time i used an archie to get through the final level of a wad, since if the boss dies the level will end even if you're dead, and the boss will never retaliate. It felt good
Look! It’s a wild spycrab!
"...At least these suckers are rare."
Plutonia: Allow me to introduce myself.
That Spiderdemon chaingun always looked off, yeah.
I actually never knew that that wall face was an Archvile's, let alone that he had anything resembling a face. Always saw it as parts of his face glued together with the side of his teeth barely visible.
Yeah this blew my mind. Been playing Doom 2 since it came out and never made that connection at all.
Chris O' Neil of OneyNG/OneyPlays is a Patron of yours? Or is that name a coincidence?
Either way fantastic stuff man.
Coincidence.
@@decino Coincident is a good youtuber Mr. Decino, he makes content like yours and posts stream highlights on his channel. Also like you he has a very nice accent.
@@supershyguy1680 hes portuguese
Can you imagine if arch-viles could resurrect other arch-viles? Pure hell!
And imagine if the resurrected Arch-Vile were to be a ghost monster after being crushed. That would be a serious pain due to ammo going through them and luring them to the wall is more of a chore.
*I kinda wanna see it*
00:31 lol the foot race is too funny
"Let's see how Archie resurrects dead stuff" sounds like it would be a Riverdale quote.
i love the fact that you used Hunted's song from the Plutonia Midi Pack for the video! Excellent work as always!
Ah, my favourite enemy! About the revive-radius, it never factors the y-position for distance? I have yet to see how they implement it in Doom Eternal, will be interesting to see.
Vertical position is not checked for distance, no. Doom Eternal Archie will most likely be a Summoner clone.
No it doesn't. Not even in default GZDoom.
You make the best technical DooM explanations ever on UA-cam, highly enjoyed this one, thanks!
Dude I loved the speed comparison and health comparison chart and just everything keep this coming my guy
Your videos are so interesting, because you analyse all the possibilities of the topic, for example the case of the pain elemental
TL;DW: "See an archvile? Kill it"
There, saved you 6 minutes... unless you want decino's soothing voice
you'll miss out on sick epic gamer arch-vile jumps tho
"i can implant this delicious cake directly into your stomach, there, saved you 3 minutes... unless you want to taste it." :P
Who doesn't?
nah, that doesn't summarize the video at all, he explained so much more than just "they are bad", he explained really cool ways to dodge their attacks and how their attacks are calculated and so on. but I get that you were just trying to be funny
if you keep them alive and only king shotgunner and zombie men and chaingunners infinite bullets

These videos are truly amazing. Thank you so much. Doom is forever one of my favourite gaming experiences and I've dabbled into all sorts of WADs and map creation but to see how it actually works is.. Truly wonderful. Thank you.
I'm starting to believe decino's thumbnails are a gift from God himself
With the Archvile being one of my favorite enemies in Doom. When I saw this in my notifications, I smiled to my ears. Thanks decino!
Edit: “At least these suckers are rare.” *Laughs in Plutonia*
You beat me to it (in regards to Plutonia, then again it's right when the video begins)
*laughs in hell revealed*
It's amazing how little I know about Doom sometimes despite having played the games over and over since I was 4 years old, playing the game for over two decades at this point. Arch-Viles are assholes but I wouldn't have them any other way.
4:55 ARCH-VILE: YEET!
"a ghostly meatball noclipping around"
lollll
I love Archviles. Their concept is just outstanding
4:20 HOLY MACKERAL
i see you are a fan of PRO DOOM STRATS too, Decino
So that thing is still relevant
wow
1:00 No.
Anybody got that reference?
I was almost afraid in Ultimate Doom when i saw the archvile door before i knew what it was
Ah, Joel’s favorite enemy.
This is mesmerizing, I've been mapping and playing doom since I can remember but you make me realise that there are still things to be learnt.
Thank's for all this videos! Always learn something new about the code, and thanks to you now I can encourage archviles taking less damage
keep up te good job! You're good at this
You make chill videos bro, I love watching them.
You should mention this to Joel from vinesauce, his “favorite” monster
Thanks for the like.
Huh, i always figured those faces on the walls were chaingunner/heavy weapon dude faces
I thought they were mancubus's face. And i still think like that.
Wow man your in-depth research is incredible. Keep it up 👍
I still like to think that Doomguy managed to trick one of these guys into resurrecting Daisy. Archviles have their uses.
I felt my heart rate double when I heard the music from Sunder map05 and Plutonia 2 map11...two maps I'd rather forget.
Imagine how much less threatening the archvile would be if it had its irl model in game without the face
"Now you have a ghostly meatball flying around" *dear god*
The first time I watched this video I didn't know you used the track for MAP11 from the Plutonia MIDI pack as background music, as I hadn't played the map yet.
That's a nice touch.
