Bassem Youssef I think would have turned it down. He turned down other countries who offered to revamp his show Barnameg. I hope one day Egypt may “repent” from its close-mindedness because I do miss that show. And while one can disagree with him politically, one should be able to disagree without being threatening, and Egypt unfortunately was not ready for that, as the people are prone to being lemmings to an idolized leadership that is second only to Allah, rather than being opinionated enough for a functional democracy.
At the very least, I'm glad he was able to do his Democracy Handbook series ("I'm Italian") and very much enjoyed his book Laughing through the Arab Spring. So I'm glad he's able to parlay his craft outside of an Al bernameg style program (only saw one or two episodes, but I definitely laughed).

He is absolutely right. I am Indian... Jon Stewart helped me, as an individual, make sense of the madness around me at a time when all I could see was conflicting opinions and all I could hear were loud voices. He helped me understand what empathy looks like EVEN in such an environment. So happy for Jon Stewart :) I still miss his brand of comedy being as accessible as he was. Today, everyone is upset all the time and ... it's funny.

Sweden here. The Bush years were far more magnificent because of Jon and his crew. So many fond memories, I bow in respect and will always remember how much joy was possible to find in the darkness. (I obviously became a news addict too, mostly reading..) Bassem I remember too!
Same here, mate. Kiwi here, who is now a US citizen and lives in NYC. Jon and Steven Colbert taught me more about US politics - REAL US politics - than anyone else. I salute you, sir.
If you learn your politics from a comedian, then you're the joke. His show is heavily biased to one side of the politicians parties. You'll never hear the other sides point of view because they will never allow it air time. They literally use him and Steven Colbert to slander each side of the political parties it's stupid and sad and you should learn some actual politics.

Love that Jon is laughing so hard every time Bassem roasts him. Two of my favorite men in the world of comedy. Both full of intelligence, integrity and heart.
I was also introduced to Jon Stewart on the CNN Global Edition. I live in Lusaka, Zambia and for many years, CNN was the only American channel we could watch regularly. Your show was incisive, inspirational, insightful.... Thank you Jon Stewart for all that you've done for democracy.
As a middle easterner/ Syrian I've known Bassem Yousef since he started making UA-cam videos. And he is actually hilarious comedian. Also pan Arabic sence of humor is often dark/ bitter sweet-ish. We love that shit
Same here from China, Jon Stewart aka 囧司徒 was my source of American politics when I was in college. And what he said at the last two minutes of his reception speech was such a reckoning because that’s exactly what happens under dictatorship. He is so empathetic, caring and he ran his show with integrity and truly funny jokes that I laughed to the grounds every time I watched it. He deserves all the honors and beyond, and I hope I can see him more often as we need more men and women like him.
Same here from China. Sadly nowadays China is too ridiculed to appreciate the critical thinking from Jon. As a country that loves pirate things so much, it's a shame that we don't got a pirate Jon.
I live in Botswana, Southern Africa and was also introduced to Jon from CNN in the early 2000s around the age of 10. My parents watched the news religiously and I absolutely hated it, but they would leave it on and sometimes ild catch the Daily Show afterwards, and loved it! Been a fan ever since! He got me into following American politics and shaped a lot of my ideology. Love him and glad he gave us such great comedians as John Oliver and Stephen Colbert!
I am Mexican, so I am not too much aware of what happend in Egypt for the last years (as much as I am as not aware of the proper English writing grammar) but I can identify my self with Bassem Youssef just because I seen in him a human just as me, or as any one else. One who is obviosly talented, funny and smart, one who cares aabout his People just as all of us do around the World. Congrats to him, as well as Jon Stewart, for showing us that above been Americans, Egypsians, Israelis, Palestinians or whatever, we are part of one diverse community and we all must learn to see the reflection of ourselves in the ones around us, no matter how diferent they may seen, because our common future depends on this simple, but also so extraordinary dificult principle.
Same for many Europeans. His show was one of the first American talks shows I started to follow and his show clearly stuck out from others. I had only started to watch his show regularly and rewatch his older videos when I saw that he was quitting. I was kind of devastated, but his work definitely lives on!
Great tribute! As a Canadian I watched the Daily Show to 'sift' out the 'crap' about American politics ............thanks Bassem for your honest words and your political satire about Jon Stewart! Jon did have a global reach to his work! Thanks!!!
I didn't know there was gay marriage in Canada until I heard Jon said "our gay brother that lives upstairs " lol starting from my teenage years, Jon taught me a lot. +,,,,,,,,,1,
I loved The Daily Show with Jon Stewart specifically for this. I always wished we could have something similar for Canadian political news. Then maybe we could be as interested in our own issues as the Jon made others interested in American issues.
@@felisd I guess Canadian and European politics are not so dysfunctional and "messed up" as its American counterpart which is a very fertile breeding ground for political satire. A quick look at political satire shows during Trump presidency would clearly explain my point.
I resontate with this, from China, Jon was the origin and the inspiration of democracy in modern time outside USA. Without him, I wouldn't understand the politics of today's society and certainly wouldn't have deep perspective of the contrast of the east and the west.
He’s so right I’m French but I was living in the UK at the time and I leaned so much and I dreamed of the same level of integrity and humor ...... thank you so much John
It is true of his impact on people around the world. I’m Chinese and I started watching the daily show religiously in high school just a few years before Jon left. He’s not only my role model for humor and comedy writing, he’s the moral model for me that stands for honesty, empathy and passion.
born and raised in Egypt, i remember the beginning of Bassem's youtube show and how quickly it became viral, the reason for its great success was first and foremost the courage him and his colleagues who made the show had, a courage to speak up publicly about politics. this is something that was not done. everyone in Egypt knew the daily show and watched it religiously. and yet everyone knew that a show like the daily show could never work in Egypt because publicly criticizing political leaders was just a death sentence. but Bassem and his colleagues dared to do it in a time where it was needed the most. the Arab spring was a very confusing time for Egyptians. Bassem's show was more than just a satirical reflection on the current politics, it was the SOLE source of truth and reason in a sea of propaganda and lies and deception. he was the voice of an entire nation saying "ENOUGH!" exposing the hypocrisy and shedding light on all the wrongdoings in hopes of making a change and pushing for a better future through public critique. I respect you and your colleagues tremendously, Bassem! i still remember running to the nearest "kahwa" whenever it was time to watch his show, the entire street would be sitting there watching. his influence was too strong to leave alone. Once the military regime came in, the first thing they did was "quiet" any and every voice. they were the sole source of truth now. they fed you their version of reality and you had to accept it or else. شكراً يا باسم على كل إلي عملته
Bassem is so right ! Outside the US, if for a week we were too busy to catch the news Jon would not just bring us up to date … but we’d also get to understand perspectives and nuances. His political genius is unmatched.
Non Egyptians, don't understand Who Bassem was, Bassem is not a random comedian who got interviewed by piers morgan. Bassem was the most watched guy in the arab region, his show was so powerful, it was able to take down the islamists. Bassem could have been extremely wealthy and rich, but he decided to stay up to his morals, which led him to flee egypt.
Led him to flee Egypt from the regime that came after the Islamists, from Sisi's mukhabarat, not the Islamists (who also did not take kindly to his making fun of them).
"Bassem could have been extremely wealthy & rich" ... 2 Questions 1. What's the difference between wealthy vs. Rich. 2. On what theory do you think that he could have become "rich".
@@marthamasdeo9833 Because the regime(s) would have _loved_ for him to become a mouthpiece for them and he refused them, both the carrot (money) and the stick (jail, tear gas, bomb threats, etc), for as long as he possibly could, until he had to flee the country.
I was in South Africa watching loads of Jon Stewart for the first time. What simply AMAZED me, was the command he had over his craft. And how incisive his arguments & points were. You were watching a MASTER at work. And it was never not fascinating.
When Jon left Apple I thought this is the Daily Shows golden ticket to revive itself after the disaster it has become by getting Jon back on the show and Bassem as a regular. However, they just decided to not consider Hasan Minaj because he exagerates comedy. I cannot even make this up. Clearly the show is doubling down on being woke and both Jon and Bassem are too real foe their liking. They will get some identity token host and in a few years itll be too late to fix the reputation of the show which has lost all the funny and all the insightfulness.
I was a European living in Oregon in 2001 when I first saw Jon Stewart. He was the biggest gem I took home from my time in the States. Watched pretty much every Daily Show Episode until his last, using torrents. Became a journalist - while having Jon Stewart as by far my biggest influence. Just wished I had only 10% of the talent he has. Deep bow to this man!
If it wasn't for Jon I would have never paid attention to American Politics while living in America but what is truly amazing is how far Jon inspired and introduced to many around the world about American issues, politics, and so on. Truly admirable.
From the Philippines, political satirical humor like the daily show gave me an awakening that you don't need to be boring to be respected. Jon Stewart is the OG of political satire and now we have Jimmy Kimmel, Trevor Noah, Stephen Colbert, Seth Myers and a lot more that shows how funny can be respected. Now, we pray someone like you to be here.
Jon is the only one speaking truth to power. All those others bend the Knee to the sponsors. Whilst they can make funny quips. Jon Stewart they are not.
Well said Bassem. I also learnt American politics from Jon being in the UK, and felt his humanism when he used to be evoked by hard hitting stories. Jon has left a great impact on a lot of us!
Jon's impact on the world at large is incredible. But what he did is possible everywhere, and with everyone. So long as you think for yourself, are open to reason and new information, and are willing to open a dialogue on the issues with those that have a different perspective.... Our world can be so much better.
Somali fan here bassim is right people don’t really realise how impactful jon really is all throughout the world as a somali kid i came to know of him through his show which at the time he was on air I didn’t know much about because UA-cam wasn’t popular in our country at the time but later on when i went to Uganda for my university i came to know of jon and to put it mildly he really is the only one political satirist that i could watch and say this guy means what he says thank you jon and i love you
Bassem's account of learning of Stewart mirrors my own. When they started airing Comedy Central I would avidly watch Jon even though I was too young to understand all the jokes and not American enough to understand their politics, but his critical eye, integrity, and sense of humor sparked something in me. It's probably why I ended up in journalism.
Absolutely! Jon Stewart is loved more outside of the US reason well, his Constructive criticism across the board+comedy performance for the voiceless is adorable, love him from Afghanistan.❤
My admiration for this man knows no bounds. In my country, satire is a protected form of speech. He did it under threat. That kind of integrity and courage are beyond admirable.
Im from Eritrea and CNN middle east would air the daily show only on Saturdays and i would wait for it every week. Mr Bassem Yousef is telling the truth.
I'm in the UK and I was introduced to the daily show by my Pakistani migrant friend about 15 years ago. A real eye opener and while I don't watch as religiously now I still follow American politics and feel a better person for having watched Jon for so long.

As an Arab living in Spain his program wat so on point, sometimes we didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Very funny, very real, amazing and very deserving of every honour heaped on him
Condolences for your loss, Samara.
To laugh. To cry. Yep, you caught the proper gist of his show.
Today, everyone is upset all the time and ... it's funny.
He does have a podcast available on UA-cam now which is produced by Apple. It’s less about comedy however it’s still him and his vast knowledge on so many topics check it out!

@@melissinha73 That’s awesome and will do! 😊🙏🏾
@@hrishijagadees1234 thank you! 😊🙏🏾
Same here! As an Indian i learnt about US politics from John Stewart
i never knew him before the piers morgan interview. but after i watched it, i wished i did. he is one of the best comedians out there and i hope that he knows it. i salute him, for both his bravery, and his Dark Dark humor that is right up my alley. Right on Brother !
Same here. 2003, CNN, Daily Show, Global Edition. You taught me so much, Jon. Big love from Croatia❤️
Svi smo mi naucili od Jon-a !!! (We all have learned from Jon).
Same here 😀
Same here. Jon Stewart was my first real introduction to American politics during the Bush administration. And I've been hooked ever since.
Sweden here. The Bush years were far more magnificent because of Jon and his crew. So many fond memories, I bow in respect and will always remember how much joy was possible to find in the darkness.
(I obviously became a news addict too, mostly reading..)
Bassem I remember too!
Well said Bassem. I'm a X Gen Aussie, and I learnt American politics from Jon. I also learnt that there are some funny Americans with a great heart.
Speaking as an American who was 18 years old in 2001, I also learned about American politics from Jon Stewart. As did most of my peers.
@@joshuarobbins7976 I had a BA when I started watching the Daily Show, I now have a Master of Commerce and a Master of Political Science. So I understand very well the different political theories.
Jon's politics are very central from an international view.
@@joshuarobbins7976 funny thing is they both emphasize the importance of noticing what ‘the other side’ is saying. I do watch Fox News, from time to time. It’s just not as funny, because apparently a bunch of people don’t get the joke.
This is a kind of comedy and delivery I've never seen before. Omg... Perfect. I'm saving this!
Dramatic and awesome timings... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I know! I’ve barely ever even heard of the guy, and here he is immediately becoming one of my favorite comedians. Good for him.
@@jessehammer123 He had the biggest political satire show in the Middle East and he humbly keeps referring to it as a small show
He did one season of a podcast as well. It's called Remade In America with Bassem Youssef. Definitely worth a listen.
As a middle easterner/ Syrian I've known Bassem Yousef since he started making UA-cam videos. And he is actually hilarious comedian. Also pan Arabic sence of humor is often dark/ bitter sweet-ish. We love that shit
@@jessehammer123 The world is so big, I can't imagine anyone not knowing Bassem this guy is a genius
说得好!so well said. Forgot how funny his Chinese name is
Same here from China. Sadly nowadays China is too ridiculed to appreciate the critical thinking from Jon. As a country that loves pirate things so much, it's a shame that we don't got a pirate Jon.
Bassem Youssef is a genius. Not only he is a surgeon but also a top notch comedian. Respect
Man, I wish he'd take over daily show! Dude is a legend
Same here. I learned tons about American politics from Jon and from the Daily show in CNN.
Much love from Hungary!
Same here in New Zealand! He truly is a global legend 🙌
It's truly wonderful to scroll down the comments, reading all the tributes from around the world about what an impact Jon Stewart has had on them.
Seriously!! This comment thread is just lovely.
It brings tears to my eyes, as an American, Other Nations, know we love you, we feel you as best we can, we respect you
Same for many Europeans. His show was one of the first American talks shows I started to follow and his show clearly stuck out from others. I had only started to watch his show regularly and rewatch his older videos when I saw that he was quitting. I was kind of devastated, but his work definitely lives on!
I've only just discovered this amazingly funny, witty and courageous man ❤
Great tribute! As a Canadian I watched the Daily Show to 'sift' out the 'crap' about American politics ............thanks Bassem for your honest words and your political satire about Jon Stewart! Jon did have a global reach to his work! Thanks!!!
Right on❤️🇨🇦❤️
I didn't know there was gay marriage in Canada until I heard Jon said "our gay brother that lives upstairs " lol starting from my teenage years, Jon taught me a lot.
@@gamalfahim3996 oh, trust me... Canadian politics ain't much better.. In Ontario right now, our premier is a Trump-lite.
Came here after Piers Morgan show, this man is next level. Huge fan sir
Very well said, Bassem! Yes, to many of us outside of the US, Jon really was our guide to American politics
Just watched him on Piers and couldnt remember where I saw him before. Remembered🎉
It is true of his impact on people around the world. I’m Chinese and I started watching the daily show religiously in high school just a few years before Jon left. He’s not only my role model for humor and comedy writing, he’s the moral model for me that stands for honesty, empathy and passion.
Deep love and respect to Jon Stewart from South Africa... I also first saw Jon on CNN and have been a fan ever since...
We missing you Bassem Youssef 💚
greetings from Egypt bro
For everyone who does not know the Egyptian people, they are the most people who have a sense of humor that you can imagine
Bassem and Ramy Youssef are an example of pure talented comedians
Fact
أتفق 👍
well ... great sense of humor usually comes from suffering and hardships and we live in egypt so.... you get the idea
@@moaazmoustafa3169There are nations whom are far more suffering yet Egyptians are top comedians by nature.
You can sense real appreciation and love in his speech
born and raised in Egypt, i remember the beginning of Bassem's youtube show and how quickly it became viral, the reason for its great success was first and foremost the courage him and his colleagues who made the show had, a courage to speak up publicly about politics. this is something that was not done. everyone in Egypt knew the daily show and watched it religiously. and yet everyone knew that a show like the daily show could never work in Egypt because publicly criticizing political leaders was just a death sentence. but Bassem and his colleagues dared to do it in a time where it was needed the most. the Arab spring was a very confusing time for Egyptians.
My favorite speech of the evening. I've returned to it over and over again. Huge fan of Bassem Youssef, who I discovered through Jon.
Baseem should maybe do the daily show ! he would be amazing at it !!! he would bring it back to its glory days.
They would never let him. You need to be a sell out.
As a pro-Palestinian 😅 I don’t think so 😂
When Jon left Apple I thought this is the Daily Shows golden ticket to revive itself after the disaster it has become by getting Jon back on the show and Bassem as a regular.
Of all the tributes, this is my favourite. South African here and he has had a huge impact on my political interest
Of all of the amazing tributes from this night this one is my favorite. So cool to hear his story and their friendship.
I hope will see Bassem one day with his own show on Netflix.
Everything isn't about Netflix
@@KygoCalvinHarris-xu4kv Well any show will, do on any channel, that's actually what was on my mind.
I love watching Bassem shows he is extremely very funny and talented
That's right ❤
he said one very true thing, I learned American politics listening to Jon Stewart.
Nigerian here....Jon Stewart impact is global...grew up watching him and my God was he always on point
Who came here from the Pierce Morgan interview?
Me 😂
Damn right, 100%… people have no idea the impact Jon has made outside America. Dude is a legend and will always remain one.
If we had a show like that here in the Philippines it would face the same fate as Bassem because people here are populist and frankly idiots
In Africa , thank you You tube..Jon Stewart GOAT.. Appletv+ all the way...
A beautiful tribute so so authentic and full of love and admiration and funny!
Beautiful and powerful.
Two amazing, courageous comedians. One humble and generous ode to the other.
Thank you both!
Two great Legends Jon and Bassam ❤
Indeed, they are ... 🫡
Nothing more right than a good human being appreciated by another good human . Thanks to Jon and Bassem 👍
Well said Bassem. I also learnt American politics from Jon being in the UK, and felt his humanism when he used to be evoked by hard hitting stories. Jon has left a great impact on a lot of us!

I completely agree with Bassem Youssef, He is honest and brave ❤
Jon's impact on the world at large is incredible.
But what he did is possible everywhere, and with everyone.
So long as you think for yourself, are open to reason and new information, and are willing to open a dialogue on the issues with those that have a different perspective....
Our world can be so much better.
Somali fan here bassim is right people don’t really realise how impactful jon really is all throughout the world as a somali kid i came to know of him through his show which at the time he was on air I didn’t know much about because UA-cam wasn’t popular in our country at the time but later on when i went to Uganda for my university i came to know of jon and to put it mildly he really is the only one political satirist that i could watch and say this guy means what he says thank you jon and i love you
He’s brilliant and so sincere too.
Today, I would like to thank Bassem yousif for introducing Jon Stewart and what a great man he is.
Jon you are truly inspirational.
Delusional
I've learned everything about American politics and society watching his show. Thanks Jon!! You got a beer paid in Santiago de Compostela!!
Im from Eritrea and CNN middle east would air the daily show only on Saturdays and i would wait for it every week. Mr Bassem Yousef is telling the truth.
Adorable, candid, authentic! Thanks to both of you. Art is power.
I'm in the UK and I was introduced to the daily show by my Pakistani migrant friend about 15 years ago. A real eye opener and while I don't watch as religiously now I still follow American politics and feel a better person for having watched Jon for so long.
Oh, I didn't expect this friendship at all, I like Jon Stewart & I've just discovered Bassem Youssef & them crossing paths is so peculiar but also kind of awrsome. That was a heartwarming, hilarious speech 😊
