  • A Review and Discussion of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The video looks at how it influenced the development of the luxury steel sports watch, how its design looks to be a prototype but also something from a different time. And answers the question as to why you can both love and hate the design of the watch.

    My goodness IDGuy, and others. As a proud owner of a 15400st, a true grail piece, I can't tell you how gorgeous it is. It is far, far more than the sum of its parts, and makes any Rolex short of a Daytona look like a toy, like a Swatch that I bought as a kid. Some perspective is needed here, it's like most people have never seen one, let alone worn one!

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  4 роки тому

      I've worn my fair share of them in the past (when AD's actually stocked them) and it truly is something special. The comments seems to be very 50/50 for the piece, but I really do enjoy it. The design is wholly unique and really is a watch that deserves a status above most. Thanks a lot for the comment Nicholas! Keep wearing your 15400 is good health! It's one helluva beast

    Wonderful discussion about the RO. I agree with your sentiment. I cannot understand whether I love the RO or dislike it. The only sure thing I know is that I cannot just ignore it, I think it's a design the keeps talking to me, regardless of its age. I think I'd love to try one.

    Indeed, a very complicated watch. I found the peace with a 15000ST (33 mm) with dark blue dial from 2004. AND I LOVE IT !!! Designed at the time of the charming Jaqueline Dimier. And so is the watch. Nothing to do with the more blingbling and hyped pieces of the Benhamian aera. And a big thanks for the quality of your videos.

    Excellent video! Almost every single statement is spot-on. And even though I think it's one of the most beautifully designed watches of all time, I can totally understand why it can also be perceived as ugly and all these fluctuating love hate feelings you have towards it. Reminds of when I first saw it some 10-12 years ago. I just couldn't understand it. And I don't claim that I now understand the mindset behind the design, but I just truly admire the end result.

    What i don't like is how some people see Genta as the ultimate designer (ahem Carter Santos bezel, and his other designs don't get the same love). The RO was considered ugly and expensive when launched but gained popularity simply because it was expensive (rich snobs would never wear quartz ever since the Japanese made it mainstream). I personally don't think its a looker but the finish is excellent.

      I really think the watch and the truck pair well together. We're going through a process where these brutalist late 70's early 80's designs are creeping back in! It's very exciting to see where concepts like these will go in the coming years! Thank you for the comment Shelby!

    • @ID-Guy

      Brilliantly said... and now everyone is going around with the songs in their heads (and so often you see others singing out loud / or humming the tune and it's equally annoying - meaning, seeing the watches on everyone's wrists) Great line Shane and thank you for the comment!

    A 35mm RO is the most desirable watch on the market imo. Genta himself shivered when he first saw the oversized diver and chronograph versions. So do I. I dream of a 3-hand RO but I will never buy one because of its price.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  4 роки тому

      The smaller sizes really look great! And because of their case shape wears at least 2mm's larger. But the price of steel nowadays... some brands selling watches for 20k, others for 200, both using the same materials. It's bizarre. Thank you as always for the comments, sir!

    Iconic seventies design:
    For me the Royal Oak is the edgy Lamborghini Countach of wristwatches and the Nautilus is the rounded Ferrari 512 BB!
    Pinifarina's 512 is a great design, Gandini's Countach (the original LP400) is the even greater design.
    The Offshore models are the winged and bagged obscenities of the late or very late Countach models.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  4 роки тому

Wearing it is a different experience (I've had some great experiences with them at AD's back in the day) It's also a watch that you'd choose to wear on a certain occasion and not everyday (unlike Rolex's etc) Such a difficult piece to pinpoint, but it's oh so cool (and marmite)

    As a Royal Oak owner (ref. 15400), my experience says it's heavy, cumbersome, uncomfortable at times. But the Caliber 3120, with it's 278 individual components, 40 jewels, and 60-hour power reserve keeps amazing time after 3 years (+ 2.5 seconds per day) without service and protects me from doing stupid things like changing the date at or near midnight.
    Not only that but it turns more heads than any Rolex or Omega I've ever owned. Even if 4/10 times people say "Nice watch, is that a Rolex" lol.

  • @mohamedalketbi2326

    Always the first hit is the strongest , Gerald Genta has his best design in the beginning which explain why it’s better than PP or the rest of his designs,,, I like guilloche patterns applied in blue dial ,,, it adds 40 % aesthetic into the watch.

  • @meson183
    @meson183 4 роки тому

    For me the Royal Oak grew on me. At first it was too brutal and I dismissed it. But on subsequent looks, there is much more detail to be found in the finishing, the brushing and polishing and all the bevels. And this includes the meticulously crafted bracelet. It's all a bit architectural in feel. But then it gets softened in such subtle ways, it almost doesn't register. I particularly grew to love the "screws", because of their incongruity of the slots, yet they couldn't possibly turn being hexagonal. I liked the paradox.
    Also, I think it would be so much more appealing in real life. I think it will be a far better looking watch in the flesh.

    Watches, cars, suits. Who does really believe the 70’s and 80’s were a high water mark in style ? Come on, it’s been the nadir of taste.

    Watched it, enjoyed it but still find GG's designs ugly and dated. I just don't get the hype. Cheers 👍🏻

      I think what I like the most about the designs is that they are in a family of their own (something that we seldom see with watch designs nowadays) You can look at pieces from this era and say "That's Genta". Thank you for the comment Steve! It is a true love it / hate it beast

    Lots of RO and even more ROO detractors. How many have worn let alone owned one? Only then does one appreciate their worth. The quality is impeccable regardless of the design. Rolex does not come close. Conversely, Grand Seiko does. I have a 26400. It's brutal but also exquisite. My GS GMT is just exquisite. My Daytona is lovely but not in the same league when it comes to finish. However it's up there in the general feeling of quality, but it's not as special. The RO simply is.

      Ess tiger jajajaj - Come on - I even own Rolex and will never say that Rolex is superior vs AP or PP neither Vacheron - be realistic please (Rolex ) and even if I own it - it’s a mass industrial produce watch ...

      Ess tiger well, maybe for you it’s but I believe people who appreciate art, knows what Horology means but of course - I don’t expect the masses to understand it ... do you know how many watches AP produces and how many Rolex sport model produces? But I understand - it’s your opinion and if you economic level doesn’t allow you the freedom of enjoying watches but only for retention purposes ... I do understand you situation

      Ess tiger jajajaj - man, Rolex make over million watches a year and now they are even producing more (do some research please ) and please stop trying to convince yourself that Rolex is better then the holy trinity. If you love Rolex, it’s all good but please stop comparing art with junk ...

    I don’t get caught up with all the hype. I don’t care for it at all. I’m not swayed by what others say, the limited availability, or the market price. It does nothing for me.
    I prefer prices with a more timeless design. Those that look relevant today and twenty years from now.

      It's a good philosophy to live by. If all three pieces were laid out on the table, I'd probably go for the VC overseas just because of what it offers and the approach it has taken. But I fully agree that buying into the hype really isn't worth the money in the slightest. Thank you for the comment Ash!

    It's ugly and clearly it has been designed super fast, in a hurry Without carring about comfort of the owner. However this design is a status symbol like the teletubbies head design of the nautilus.

      Hahaha! I love how divided we all are on the watch. It's a strange, strange beast. There are many more pieces to get for a much better price, but hey, it's a cool talking point. Thank you for the comment Russell!

    Give me a break! First time to the channel and was not impressed. I find the narration behind this video so disingenuous that it distracted from the analysis. The script and style for this video is a taken almost totally from C. S Lewis' astounding book "Mere Christianity", almost verbatim with the Irish authors' argumentation changed out for watches?
