- We review and teach you how to use the Chicago Electric Battery Power Tool load tester sold by Harbor Freight that can be used for both 6 and 12 volt batteries voltages. We tested 3 different battery's using this meter and give you our opinion of how well it did or did not do based on its performance.

Read the instructions. The reading depends on the CCA (cold cranking amps rating) of the battery. that is why there are stepped markings from 200 to 1000. so for a 600 CCA battery the minimum reading should be 10.4V after the 10s load test. a 400 CCA should have a minimum reading of 10V. And this is at about 20 degs celcius. With your very cold weather you have to drop the the CCA battery rating to one or two steps lower. So a 600 CCA battery would be read as a 400 or 200 CCA bat..
I could not figure out how to use the load function based on the instructions. So thanks for the demo.

Adjust the center screw on the meter to bring it up if it makes you happy, I have one just like that in chrome for the last 20 years works good if it reads over 9 volts while you count to 7, the battery is good.

This is a great video. Thanks! I learned a lot. After viewing it I checked the voltage readout on my HF Load Tester with RC lipo batteries with known exact voltage. My load tester was reading exactly 0.6 volts too high on every battery (batteries of around 12 volts). I calibrated the meter using the "zero adjust" screw (located just below the meter) and now it gives exact voltage readings for batteries in the 11 to 13 volt range.
After calibrating at 12 volts, I also tested batteries that were 7.6 volts and 15 volts.

This seems accurate enough to me. If you want even more accuracy, having calibrated your meter at 12 volts, you could just subtract 0.2 volts from your reading when testing your charging system.

It's funny you would be testing batteries today. My PC's UPS crapped out yesterday, and I've been looking today for a suitable tester for it's 12V 9AH battery. I think this is a bit too much for it however.
In case if you may be wondering why the truck battery test seems to show weak result with a fairly new battery. It is because the post terminals on the battery used by GM truck is steel rather than lead. The standard battery test clamp rely on soft lead post to allow the "teeth" to bite into the post to create reliable electrical connection. Steel post with copper clamp create too much resistance at the contact point. In order to test battery with steel post, you'll need to buy a lead post with bolt adapter. Those are usually available at Wally World.

Just curious, what did the solar panel digital voltage display show when you placed the load on the solar batteries. I would think that is a good gauge to compare the load tester reading to.

You will find that the outside temperature reduces the CCA in 80 degrees f you will get a better load rating, the only difference between that one and a Snap-on is snap-on uses a carbon pile for the load and yours uses a heating element, also I can test diodes in the alternator, I get the same results in the cold, good video Dave.Thanks thumbs-up.
Hi Steve, I think you should go by the voltage readings rather than the colored scales, it's only a 100 amp load, some testers use up to about 300 amp load, I would say unloaded the battery should be about 12.4 min, when charging on vehicle about 13.9 to 14.7, with the 100 amp hot wire load on from 9 to 11 volts...Fred in England

You misread the meter when pressing the load button for 10 seconds.
1. Check what amp is on the side of the battery.
2. If say it's 600amp then press the load button.
3. See the meter read on the green 600amp step.
Informative video. I'll probably pick one of these up, mainly because I feel guilty taking my alternators and batteries down to the auto parts store for testing but then buying the batteries at Costco and alternators at Rock Auto. I had a pair of knit gloves similar to yours but threw them out because things kept slipping out my hands (things like cameras for example?)
Hi Steve, something you might want to check out is a thing called a Carbon Pile Battery tester, I believe they might be made in Chicago, I have one, there not overly priced and they do a good job, can test battery, charging and can put up to 500 amps I believe on battery...I believe the is a U tube clip on it, one of the fixitrealfast clips...good luck Fred in UK.
I did try it on a small RC starter 12 volt battery and it worked just like the big ones did.
I just used mine. Calibrated it to a DVOM at battery voltage with the zero'ing screw. Was only low by 0.1V or so at 12.1V. Old battery that was a bit over 9 yrs old was having trouble cranking the starter all of a sudden. Load tested at 9.0V. Voltage when engine idling was 14.5V in the green zone suggesting charging system was OK. New battery from Walmart; Everstart MAXX load tested at 11.0V. That will be my baseline for the future with this new battery. No trouble at all cranking starter.
I thought that there were supposed to be tables where you adjust the expected CCA readout according to ambient temperature? Some load testers have the graphs on the side of the instrument.
A possible cause could be the charging system of the computer. Try installing a battery monitoring software tool available free from download dot com and see if your battery is receiving a charge signal from the computer

The center screw would fix the draw dread but then the volts and charging read would be off. It is what it it is

I have a Laptop that has had recent battery issues. Ive had to replace one of them. My mosy recent case was a possible faulty battery. But my battery seems to be working properly. Could there be a fault in my laptop?

I think you press and apply the load way too long even longer that 15 seconds. Is that bad for the battery while testing it?
