- It's time for some Paul Gilbert! An amazing technical player with a great ear for melody too. I used to watch an instructional dvd while I was learning to play... but never finished it!

What always impressed me the most about Paul, is he can pick ever single note faster than most players using legato!
faster than gary moore?
Yeah that's true!
Honestly, the *most* impressive thing about Gilbert is the guys humility..... He's always really down to earth, never comes off as egotistical. Likely from years of teaching and having to relate to students as well. But as @wingsofpegasus said, he's always just a good guy. Even though everyone has been putting him on a pedestal for decades now, and deservedly so. Same with Guthrie Govan, just a great and down to earth guy, and an absolute monster on the instrument.
combination of alternate n legato.
Muhammad Mamun Sarowar Chowdhury you can hear the wick noises
He and Marty Friedman are the only soloist guitar players I can hear for hours not getting bored
I'm with you
Add Nuno onto that list plzzzzzzz🎉
The ultimate shredder, best alternate-picker, cleanest and most melodic, imo... The good old Metal Dog, what it was called before becoming Technical Difficulties, with a different solo as we hear, and one of my absolute favorite from him, amazing...
Yeah Batio is up there, but I think Paul is more melodic.
Yeah MAB is a great player... Gilbert's picking over a wide variety of licks and styles, plus his impeccable control of dynamics, are still unparalleled, in my opinion... And his riffs, rhythms and harmonies are just as good as his leads... Lots of unique gems in his old VHS, like the first terrifying shred solo in Intense Rock 1 or Screamin Blues O'Mania, also The Gargoyle, Colorado Bulldog's pentatonic madness intro and outro, and one of my favorite shred-song ever composed Let The Computer Decide, there's a perfect live performance of it from an asian's clinic, you should check it out...
Greatest physical player I've ever seen. Met him at a local guitar shop right before Mr. Big blew up. Such a nice down to earth dude. And he played the drums for our small audience of 12! Pretty amazing at drums also.
Cool!
I met him at a clinic after Mr Big had blown up and he was still this super cool guy, like it was him meeting his idol, not the other way around! also his musical knowledge really, REALLY blew me away. He did a piece where he would ask for song & band from the audience and then play it and discuss the structure of the melody and the progressions, modes, inversions they were using... people were calling out some pretty weird and random stuff, I thought it had to be rigged (and practiced) until a mate called out some ABBA song, which he again nailed! I asked him afterwards and he said he just randomly called it out as it was the most un metal song he could think of...
Yep, Gilbert is a good drummer too, he can play different instruments... I've seen him trading places with Tomas Lang in his recent tours for a song or two, also at soundchecks, same with Pat Torpey (sadly missed) in Mr Big, he played Smoke On The Water on drums in 2009 at Budokan... And yes Gilbert is a human's jukebox, it seems he knows every pop, rock, whatever song mankind ever created and can play it perfectly on request, mindblowing stuff...
"Every guitarist has to be part drummer"
-Paul Gilbert
I'm studing this song right now and i can say this: i hate Paul Gilbert!
Why he does not make a song like "Easy difficulties"?
I think that ones called smoke on the water!
Guerino Mazzocchetti 😄
Ow my... haha
I'll second that
GOOSEBUMPS every time I listen to this. One of my all time favorite compositions. Thanks Fil.
Also PG just seems like the nicest guy.
Yeah definitely!
Was this filmed in 1982?
On a serious note; Paul Gilbert is fuckin amazing. One of the best guitarists alive. He's got the speed. technical proficiency, plus he can deliver very tasteful and melodic music. Way better than Malmsteen.
I agree. Paul is really cool too, I once saw an 'instructional' DVD by Malmsteen where he wouldn't explain how he shifted from one string to another he said 'I just kinda do it' and that 'it just happens'. Like some kind of school kid hiding his special secret trick. The answer was either an upstroke or downstroke. When you've played for a while its easy to figure out anyway. Paul always explains everything clearly and isn't this childish!
wingsofpegasus That is because Malmsteen is useless as a teacher. Just because you are good at doing something does not mean you are good at teaching or passing on that knowledge (it is a different skill) however that doesn't make you a worse guitarrist (in fact Gilbert counts Malsmteen as one od his influences). Having said that is true that Gilbert is great at explaining music. I am not a player myself and still love his instructional videos.
Absolutely bang on there mate! Paul is an unreal player in every aspect of guitar
Of course he’s better than malmsteen, although it’s different kind of playing; Yngwie just likes to shred all over the guitar and some people prefer that, but Gilbert is way more technical and complete
Paul was a qualified guitar tutor before he became famous. That helps when explaining stuff....
Paul Gilbert is a hell of a player and I like his attitude. What impresses me the most about him, on top of his technical abilities, is how he uses dynamics, muted notes, and great vibrato. And you're right about him having that sense of melody.
The backing track is most probably intentional, he hss done things like that in the past as an homage to the music he's listened to while growing up.
Yeah hes a cool guy!
Paul Gilbert and BucketHead both have pinky fingers like an E.T.
Haha yep!
Because they are the same person, doh!
MistyMountainMedia
No, they're not. Brian Patrick Carroll is BucketHead not Paul Gilbert.
That's possibly because Paul was Brian's teacher :o)
@@MistyMountainMedia no they ain't clown
Paul is gifted as a player, no doubt about that! I love the fact that he is so humble, so approachable, and so encouraging to other players no matter what stage they may be at. He truly loves music and has a irrepressible passion for playing!
Yeah he seems like a really cool guy!
Love Paul! Such a gifted player and humble. Anatomically speaking he has that very long sledgehammer pinky that can seemingly and effortlessly reach like no other!! (Commented before your commentary on his reach ability)....
Yeah it was destiny!
Paul is a complete master of the guitar. Watch the video of him at like 16-17 years old just sitting there playing Malmsteen, Van Halen, etc. Everything he plays he just nails perfect. You are spot on with your thoughts on his playing so cheers for that. Racer X era PG is still ahead of its time as far as I’m concerned.👍🏻
When he was around 17, one of his students was Buckethead.
Thanks Fil for putting that up. Great you got to my request so soon. Paul grew up 20 miles from my house... still the shred master but melodic.. cudos to you brother for your live feed other night nice job... have a great night... Billy J .. south of Pittsburgh
No problem Billy!
Went to see Paul live in a small club, first row. The size of its hands is impressive, something that calls your attention.
Paul has been one of my absolute favorites since Racer X! His melodies are great. He has excellent “pop” sensibilities too as far as catchy tunes. I love his album with Freddie Nelson. The song “Waste of Time” is a straight up pop tune with some very tasteful phrasing and a killer solo that is technical and emotive at the same time. Thanks for featuring one of my all time favorite axe slingers! Cheers!
No problem!
What amazes me about Paul is not just how skilled he is on the guitar, but how soft spoken, humble, generous, and kinda funny in a goofy way. A true master of his craft and a nice guy!
Yeah he seems like a cool guy!
Thanks Fil your the best. Brother in music.
If I could be one player it'd be Paul. Not only can he play anything, he can adapt to virtually any style and is a great songwriter. No arrogance, good sense of humour. Sickeningly, he is also a damn fine drummer. A true musician who loves music and conveys that joy when you hear him talk about it. Can't fault him.
Yeah he has a rare mix of ability but is still down to earth.
Great analysis as always. Been a fan of PG since the early Racer X days. His intro solo to the first video he did is stunning. The string skipping lick is classic. And yes, the Comfortably Numb chord progression is deliberate, Paul's knowledge of guitar history is encyclopedic.
👍
Thanks Fil, Paul is my favorite guitarist, I love your analysis and this is my fave version of T D.
Eventhough I play guitar I can't call myself a 'guitar player' but Paul Gilbert blew mind when I was learning guitar and was inspirational. Still remains inspirational. This song should have been what Eruption became for "guitar fans". Such a technically demanding track. Much respect & awe to Mr Gilbert.
Yeah Paul's playing is seriously impressive and he seems like a cool guy too!
Excellent! And so clean you hear every note. Thanks for sharing.
No problem!
I strum, I don't play. If it's easy I'm there. But I SOOooo appreciate players like Gilbert, his dexterity is full on, all the time! I'm convinced players like him come from another planet. LOL Another great review~!!
He's a genius. I remember ordering his CD from the back of Guitar magazine in the late 80's
Great stuff! You're making a lot of people happy again!!!!
😂
Paul Gilbert wow he have a great techniques with long finger and very brilliant.
Paul's signature Ibanez picks (plectrums) changed my life. No lie.
I suggest you check out Gilbert's late solo work if you did not already... its been a while but one of them was the 'Fuzz Universe'. This guy is an incredible musician, and there is no more compulsory shredding in his music now.
Yeah!
I love Paul Gilbert.
Saw Paul’s name and had to watch as a dear departed friend of mine, a great female metal guitarist, once took guitar lessons from Gilbert.
I can see things that she possibly learned from him in her playing.
Could listen to him all day! What impresses me he can be just flying through the notes at lightning speed and every note is clean and clear not just super fast jumbled notes
Yeah his technical ability is seriously impressive!
I saw mister Big as i waited for SOAD on castle donnington . I was surprised by the quality of the guitarist but non less of the bassist . Highly entertaining .
Naughty boy of the guitar virtuoso community. When I listened to his interviews he always mentioned about how much he wanted to be how he is now. this guy is all about dedication and well said again lack of technical difficulties and while I’m writing this you just said discipline is adding that too.
☺👍
Paul never ceases to make me think about using intravenous caffeine so i can practice 24/7 just to play this. What a killer player!
Thanks for the vid, love your channel mate! ✌️
Thanks!
great video about paul gilbert technic cheeers not very much people talking about him he"s in a master level listen to him feels like great 🤘 paul 🤘 just one of the god's guitarrrrr 🎸
Yeah he's immense!
What a technically efficient guitar musician! I was amazed when I saw him open up for Joe Satrani....at the HOB here in SC....I was blown away....I never knew he could play like this… so so gr8...he can play the classics note for note...have u seen him when he uses another guitar player help him open a song...I love watching and analysis of his work...so technically perfect....
Wow, I really am impressed with this artists creativity! Amazing. Keep with these great reactions. Peace.
👍
This is one of my favorite videos on the internet.
👍
Paul Gilbert is incredible. He gave lessons to the great buckethead. The use of the pinky finger is what blows me away. Now I'm thinking is Paul... buckethead?! Lol. Another good one fil. Keep it going brother
He's built like bucket head....it may be him 😆
I miss playing guitar. I think I'm about the same age as you Fil. I'm 34 and last year I had to stop playing due to carpal tunnel syndrome. I still love watching this stuff
Yeah I'm 35. That sounds rough, guitar is my life.
Sorry to hear that Kenny...ever try slide guitar or bass guitar? Might be a little easier on the hands!
Mike Poirier yeah I tried that.
Sorry to hear that, man. Hopefully it will come back again.
Brundlefly thanks
Nothing against malmsteen but saw him times yes he is a monster but Paul keeps it fresh and doesn't play the stereotypical repetitive Runs that Yngwie plays there fore keeping my interest going. PS how about a video on bucket head or blackmore old. Thanks FIL keep m coming
I'm getting there! ☺
Paul and I grew up a couple towns apart..he's a few older than me...his talent took him him far early on ..before he was out of his teens. He is a mega beast of a player.
Cool!
Paul does "widdly-widdly" a lot, but what impresses me the most is his change in recent years to blues. He has all the chops. I was very fortunate to meet him once in a guitar clinic and he is so infectious and enthusiastic. On top of all that his teaching the future guitarists with ArtistWorks is second to none.
Awesome!
I love Paul, he's amazing! I've never heard him miss a note.
brilliant video
This guy is amazing! Great analysis Fil!
👍
I have massive respect for paul gilbert. He is probably the best rock guitarist on the planet. But what I always really revered about him is how musically open minded he is, he listens to all kinds of music and really loves to understand how it works and use these tricks and techniques for himself. I remember him saying in an interview when he went to study music it changed everything for him, he heard more genres and styles and learned more theory and made him really nail down his techniques come up with more music ideas and licks. He is also an incredibly nice guy. I actually met him when I was in Manchester a few years ago when i was a university student, I was a beginner at that point and i walked into a pub i used to visit a lot and there he was. I walked up to him and introduced myself and he asked me what my name was what i did, and he gave me some great advice he literally just said "listen to music you like even if people say its lame, practice your tail off, but its okay to put the guitar down for a few days everyone needs a break and don't be scared to learn theory" then he told me about his website which I still use time to time as a learning resource. Awesome player and an awesome person.
Cool! Yeah he seems like a really cool guy!
Paul may very well be the most inspirational guitarist I've ever seen (through his playing AND speaking). He always makes me want to play and become better. Also, how cool is Paul's FRM200??!
Yeah he's a cool guy!
Thanks for pointing out the "Comfortably Numb" backing riff. I always concentrate so much on his abilities that I would have missed that.
No problem! Yeah it was definitely intentional by Paul!
One of bucket heads guitar teachers
Paul is an alien , so is Steve Vai both are amazing musicians that’s the only explanation for both players abilities to play like they do !!!
Fantastic playing this is the kind of melodic shredding I like his musical knowledge is amazing also.
Anything that is intense enough is not for everybody . That is why we see many people getting turned off by metal music when even the very best musical elements are there in the metal music community. Same goes for technical guitar players.
Paul's technical difficulties is a classic great example of shredding where one can definitely see it is melodious, has music theory behind it's composition, has many cool techniques, has dynamics, has intro, build ups, main lead solo , outro, everything.
But it is not for everyone.
I have friends who say there are no lyrics / singing in the song when I blasts instrumental music in the car.
What ever it is, it doesn't matter. The fact that we understand what it is, that we appreciate it , that we learn these songs to actually play it, shows a lot.
I saw Paul Gilbert at a guitar Clinic at the Raleigh Music Academy about ten years ago. Great player..
Cool!
Fuzz universe is my favorite.
👍
I got to work with Paul when he was in a band called Giant. Nice kid.
Paul is a fucking machine.
Yep!
I Love how you can't help but smile in the same places I do - it's absurdly good.....
Haha yeah it's impossible not to!
this guy is so fucking good! as close to a master of the instrument as anyone can get. i just never found the bands he has been in all that intetestung. what i want to her is an all instrumental album from paul. that would be a fucking musical journy right there. as far as i know, he has never released an album like that. what a bad ass though, fuckin hell!!
Yeah that would be cool!
Ay mate this is “Metal Dog”
Technical Difficulties was what was inspired from this track
This was a weird version of Technical Difficulties. My favorite one probably is the acoustic one in "Acustic Samurai". Truly impressive.
👍
That X-rated pinky is perhaps a help (I remember that from the old instruction VHS tape from late 80's)
Haha yeah dam those genetics!
Paul is amazing, you cant create a list of top guitar players without him included.
Amen!
My son just told me about him. He is awesome. Melodic is the word.
I've heard a lot of people giving Paul flak for being too robotic sounding and lacking any feel. I never got that from him, and you pretty much summed that up in your video as well. I remember reading an article where Eric Martin was a bit skeptical when Billy Sheehan brought Paul in to help form Mr. Big. He was impressed with his shredding, but not sure he could simply "play for the song". The rest was history. :)
Yeah exactly, he could write and compose brilliantly too.
So we need per individual sized scaled guitars to utilize that range of fretted stretch instead of one size fits all. Not like pro hockey players have mold form prescribed skates at their "Advantage" Paul has adapted the stringing to expediated his playing and possibly used different sized instruments in his playing for instance the double bass.
The Comfortably Numb backing is on purpose and is part of Paul's sense of humor.
Also, why are you basically Brian Cox?
Yeah I thought as much! I have no idea!
Well, things can only get better.
Was going to request you cover Paul Gilbert...thought i,d check first...and here he is !!...Fantastic player...normaly i dont like "shredders" but paul seems to be different. I used to have a recording of him doing a Hendrix set...i think it was at some Jazz festival. If you can find it check it out...f***in' awesome 👍👍😁
I’ve never been a fan of f holes on guitars. Actually, Paul’s pretty rockin’. Looking forward to the next vid!
Yeah he plays them well!
Paul Gilbert has covered ELP's "Karne Evil 9" and duplicated on guitar Keith Emerson's keyboard phrasing.
In videos I have seen and interviews I have read of Paul he comes across as a likable guy, a guitar teacher who would be popular among child as well as adult students. I doubt Paul would have the problems of impatience or lack of tact.
Speaking of guitarists with especially long fingers, you could also include the father of blues Robert Johnson.
The sticato in this song is on point
👍
Wooo!
playing like his gives a feeling of being high...💫
😂👍
Paul loves the blues. To be with you, one of the first songs I learned by ear, after the National Anthem.
Can you please give us your evaluation of Marty Friedman's style and the way he holds his right hand? That would go a long way to helping me out with my depression. Thanks for all your work mate
Yeah he's here somewhere too!
I'm learning this, three years in and I'm working on this.
Cool!
Wings of Pegasus It is an awesome song man. You should consider learning it.
Love this track, took me forever to learn it.
👍
He plays well, there,s not alot of guitarist that can play like that and make it sound great, thanks for video.....
Yeah he's awesome!
Funny thing, when Mr Big first arrived on the scene my friends and I were all looking at each other thinking, just great, another hair metal band but when you listened a bit closer you knew they were anything but, and I think Paul and Billy Sheehan had more than a little something to do with that hehe.
Yeah definitely!
I think it's called Metal Dog, and the phrase after the intro melded into what is now known as Technical difficulties
Yeah that's right!
you know what, there are so many talented musical people out there its really weather the industry wants to capitalize on them? wing's you are very gifted! you sing and play very clean ! i just write songs and riffs, i don't care what is selling or what is popular at the time, i just write what comes to me..if everyone copied every thing out there , there would be no originality..ah we need some new instruments!
Yeah a lot of people change their sound, sometimes it's forced by the label wanting to be more 'popular'. At least being independent you can stick to what you like!
Paul's a beast and it helps that Paul is 6'4 and has massive hands.
Haha yeah it does!
When I see Mr Paul I see Bucket Head Amazing musician 🤠 wow awesome
Picks every single note on time... beautifully
Yeah he's technically amazing!
Mike Varney knew how to pick 'em. I saw one of those fringe guitars in a pawn shop for relatively cheap I didn't know it was his signature model until later. That's his Racer X stuff on the Shrapnel label.
Yeah he plays some nice guitars!
He was 16 when Mike Varney signed him based on his demo tapes, Mike thought he was much older!
Even when he shreds, it's still music. That's why he's better than that other guy with his "circus act". He was also Buckethead's teacher.
As a Guitarplayer you should know that this is the original version...and it is called "Metal Dog"
I do! 😂
Paul Gilbert is the MAN! Great guy from all the interviews I've seen too! I always thought he would have been perfect fit for David Lee Roth post Van Halen...THAT would have been cool.
And remember anyone who doesn't like shred.....can't shred.
Haha imagine Paul in VH! Imagine the harmony guitar lines! But still would have been a cool fit for DLR on his own too.
Paul is the most clean picker I've eve,r seen live....he is probably the most gifted technical guitarist but he is a bluesman and prefers that
You're channel is excellent. I am using some outstanding AKG in ears, and your audio is outstanding. You have an accent, but that's cool. 😂😂
Regards from the midwest USA. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks! Yeah I'm from just outside London in England 😃
wingsofpegasus Very cool. My linage is from the UK of course. There is actually a village, or several I understand in the UK with my last name of Smallwood. I traced my family back to Cheshire. ;).
All the way back to the Normans. Anyway, great channel. Keep up the good work!!
Racer X... still have Street Leathel when it first came out on Cassette...
👍
Its the Frankfurt Jazz Festival 1991...if ya bothered...well worth a look..😁👍
It is a myth that SRV had big hands. His height was 1.65m. There is a print of SRV's hands at Fargo walk of fame which proves that his hands were average size for a man of his height. SRV's hands were not bigger than average, but they were stronger than average.
Paul Gilbert taught me how to smash my guitars up!
I smile at the start of the solo too
🤘
Paul Gilbert is one great shredder and equally great melody composer! Check out his Mr Big solos and riffs! Just take my heart, Anything for you, Nothing but love for few examples! He is in Top5 for me
Yep!
Have you done vid's on Tony MacAlpine and Tosin Abasi ? If not please do!
Not yet!
What about a review on Dave Murray? Quite impressive guitar player.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Supreme talent.
Amen!
Paul is such a monster. One of my favorites. His cover of red house by Hendrix is on point .
👍
