I always get the feeling that people won’t really understand this guy until he’s not around anymore. I think he’s a great artist who’s horribly misunderstood and under appreciated.

@@williamhall7165 Honestly when I first became aware of him when he was playing with Axl 'n' Friends (I refuse to call that band Guns 'n' Roses! Lol) I thought "who's the prick with the bucket on his head?!" So yeah I know where you're coming from. It's only from watching videos of him on UA-cam that I've come to appreciate how good he is. If he's good enough play with the likes of Les Claypool and Bootsy Collins he's ok with me.

Buckethead is my hero. When he played my town the show was totally un-advertised (just a sign on one side of the marquee saying Buckethead this weekend) . Maybe 50 people topps (and I bought the entire 6th row). There couldn't have been any money in it for him, and on top of that, it was the 26th night in a row he had played a show in a different town. Anyone else would have got out as quick as they could, and be totally justified. He played for 3 1/2 hrs, danced, ripped it up on bass, and handed out toys and cd's. It is a very rare person who truly cares about his fans that would do such a thing. I hope some day I can shake his hand and tell him just how much he means to me, and my family.
That’s a great story and I totally believe it. I honestly think the man would play for free. He loves to play and perform!! It’s a shame that more people don’t appreciate his greatness. He literally is one of the best guitarist of ALL TIME!!
He’s in it just for the music and not the money, wish more musicians were like that.

He’s just a terrific person, but honestly, if I could play like him, I would never put the guitar down. He just loves playing and playing for people. I doubt he worries about the money. He’s made millions and it didn’t go up his nose.
I went to high school with him, his dad was the football coach... he was a practice monster, playing several hours a day at 14yo... he was playing Randy Rhodes note for note back then and was already talking about transcribing paganini ... super laid back humble dude... Never saw any display of ego from that guy, just busted his ass because he loved it... last saw him play (around 86- 87)in a band called the Deli Creeps, which was made up of other guys I hung out with in HS... no bucket, but he would wear that white mask with a blood drop hanging from the nose( I think it was the nose)...

Buckethead auditioned to be Ozzy's lead guitarist. Ozzy loved it and offered him the job but said he'd have to lose the bucket. Buckethead declined.

Fun fact about Buckethead,he once auditioned for Ozzy and would have got the gig if he didnt refuse to take the bucket/mask off. He turned down Ozzy, what a legend!

Well, most people don’t even know who he is. There are a few pictures of him online, but from very long ago. He’s been very successful at staying anonymous, though we know his name is Brian Carroll and he’s in his 50s. But he stays anonymous for a reason, he always has, and I don’t think he’d change that for anything.
Bucket's point was simple; Ozzy didn't want Brian to join the band, he wanted Buckethead. Brian Carroll was not asked to audition; Buckethead was. To then ask him to remove the mask and bucket was an exercise in futility. Brian can't get up on stage in front of 10,000+ people every night in any case. But Buckethead can!
Kinda reminds me of when Les Claypool auditioned for Metallica.

Buckethead is a class act. Don't see how he could possibly care about money, doing tiny shows left and right, putting out 50 million songs a month, and throwing out toys to the fans. Guy just loves to make music, reminds me of Claypool's attitude on steroids. Never met him, but betting he's a really good dude.
Bucket's always been chill. His music's freakishly good, as is his playing, but he himself's pretty chill.
He passed out toys at the show I got to see him at, but he threw the last one, and I caught it. Very epic, he let us touch the killswitch, too. Love buckethead.

Watching his fret hand from the beginning of the song to the end is like watching a spider setting a web trap, catching and imprisoning it’s prey, then completely and ruthlessly devouring it. Absolutely beautiful.

I remember Guns 'N Roses return to the stage with Buckethead being their lead guitarist. At their concerts most of the people in the audience were waving Buckethead flags and Buckethead banners and went to the concert to see pretty much only him instead of the Gunners. It was phenomenal! 😂

Something that I noticed is his really subtle and deft use of the wah pedal. He never overplays it and sometimes you barely notice it’s movement, but of course every change is smooth and well thought out. He’s like a great chef, adding just the right spice. Bravo!! 👏
Sometimes he clicks it on but leaves it all the way “toe down” for more of a push to certain frequencies. I have tried this out at home and it works quite well, but of course Bucket is a god

I know buckethead personally he is extremely shy. Not just on stage but in real life. He is also extremely humble about his skills. He is also one of the most polite musicians I have had the pleasure to work with.

Buckethead is one the most well-rounded guitarists I've ever seen. Yes, he can shred with the best of them but his sense of melody is amazing and he can riff like a beast. He has incredible diversity as well. I've seen him handle everything from blues to classic rock to jazz to chicken pickin' to blue grass to all out shred to avante guard with ease. And not to mention his acoustic work! He is a phenomenal player! More people should know about him. I know as just a crappy bedroom noodler, he sure inspires the hell out of me!
Watching him slap a fucking guitar like a bass is one of the most magical things I've ever seen. It's so unreal to see.
@@cameronbartlett856 It's like listening to Hendrix play feedback. Before Hendrix, feedback was nails-on-a-blackboard shit. Then he showed up actually playing it. Normal people start whacking a guitar, it'd sound like they're putting it neck-first through the wall. The first time I saw a video of Soothsayer, he started slapping the strings & I was enthralled.
Buckethead, to me, is an example of someone with an absurd level of obsession. His unbelievable ability on the guitar and scope of work could not be achieved otherwise.

I think it is actually the psychological aspect of this guy that fascinates me and makes me more interested in his music than I would otherwise be. Something like Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson's encrypted philosophy in the enigmatic lyrics.
It's called natural talent. Buckethead is also a master of the robot dance and numchukas tricks lol.

Not even close. He "unmasked" in 2002 or so. I cannot really recall exactly when, but he is a prog rocker from California named Brian Carroll who got his break from Les Claypool in 97 or 98 I think. I was following several jam bands then so events tended to get blurred.
Do to a very rare birth defect, he absorbs nutrients through his scalp. His creativity requires a constant supply of high quality protein and southern fried goodness.
I'll trust my ears. This guy is on a level so far above everyone else and it's not even close. IDGAF what his image is or the technical mumbo jumbo.

This is actually pretty average, any paul gilbert solo is more spot on and more original. And there are tons out of that era. Greg Howe, Kotzen, Satrianu , Vai all have more variation imo. Not to mention the new boys in town. But he has beautiful songs and mystery.
He wears the KFC bucket, which is actually re-filled with freshly fried chicken before each show, so that when he ends up in musically uncharted territory, he can just wing it. I know this because I stay abreast of all the tactics guitarists use to gain a leg up on the competition.

Top 10? He is N1 of all time. In technique maybe few guitarists is better, but playing on guitar is not only running on griff. It's about feeling music, melody, harmony, passion. In this aspects bucket is on a different level. Absolutely no compare with others.
I have heard him interviewed. Soft spoken, down to earth, humble, respectful.
Recently, I listened to what was probably the same interview and agree. There was an innocence to him that was very endearing.

*Buckethead* is so many miles above that band, it only makes sense because he needed cash to make his own stuff, and *GnR* was a huge cashcow at the time!!
I met Buckethead about 25 years ago when he was just beginning to get a name for himself. He was visiting a friend of mine, Jas Obrecht, who was an editor at Guitar Player magazine (and blues guitar historian extraordinaire) and lived in my apartment complex in San Jose, CA. He knew I played jazz guitar and invited me over to meet this new sensational guitar player. I arrived at Jas's apartment and met this tall, lanky kid with a mask and KFC bucket on his head, who was plugged in. At first I thought Jas was pulling a joke on me, so I went along. It took but a few seconds to realize this was no joke. Not only did I instantly recognize a magnificent guitar player, but although he was "in persona" after awhile he did break silence and we talked. I eventually left not only impressed with his playing but also that he (Brian) is an authentically really nice guy. I've been really happy seeing him find success and that he's developed a great following. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving and nicer guy.
Although I'm more of a Scofield, Abercrombie, Metheny, Jim Hall, John Stowell, Hedges, Holdsworth type and get bored with most "shredder" players that are 99% technique and 1% musical talent, Buckethead is my favorite shredder since even in his shredding you can still hear his emotions, passion, exploring and reaching. Kinda reminds me of Holdsworth in that regard. He has a great sense of dynamics and tells a story in his playing, as all great musicians do.

I think you can tell he's a nice guy from the body language, the sounds, the phrasing, it's got a gracious feel. Then if you see the interaction with audiences, it's obvious.

DN_Horror - Without his mask he's horrifically disfigured, with major 2nd and 3rd degree burn scars, some kind of hivey splotchy rash over his right cheek and chin, a scar from a deep cut diagonally across his nose, and a bloodshot drooping left eye that looks out and up. No, just kidding. I was sworn to secrecy but to be honest it was so long ago I don't really remember much anyway. He was a young, normal looking guy with long hair. I wouldn't be able to pick him out of a crowd now. I remember his important characteristics - super talented, super friendly guy. Not a shred of arrogant, pretentious or condescending attitude.

Hes not just a technical player...he has a hook and groove that make him unique...
My favorite thing about Buckethead is that he doesn't just shred and show off, but actually tried to write beautiful music. Listen to "I love my parents", and it's beautiful

Kiss never wore masks. And they are amazing; they surely didn't have the best times every single show, but you can't put them down. If you don't think Kiss isn't skilled or talented, I'd love to disagree. My point is simple - refrain from comparing or putting down musicians, and instead enjoy the music.

I met buckethead at after he played a DeliCreeps show at the Berkeley Square, I wanna say it was in 90’s .... he wore his bucket the whole time he was on stage , completely shredded all night. After the show he came and hung Out minus the bucket and mask, super cool and humble. One thing for sure, he is tall as funk and had big big hands ... as in really long fingers. Any way super cool dude

Bucketheads ability to overcome his own extreme inhibitions and shyness and be able to share his music with us makes him a musical superhero in my eyes because my life has been greatly enhanced by his musical genius and mastery of the guitar. He also plays a mean bass.

Buckethead is freaking solid and serves the song above all else. Most instrumentals by him could make the basis for 3 popular rock songs. And he DOES have chops which you only see when they are called for. Its beautiful music! If you play this for the average person vs satriani or vai and ask them what they prefer, its usually the buckethead song.

Yes he's better than almost all of the rock guitarists. We think of people like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai as virtuosos and they are but Buckethead is objectively better he just wasn't interested in fame. I think a couple other top rock guitarists are Frank Zappa, Mick Ronson, and Dimebag Darell but they weren't technical guitarists like the former ones mentioned.

You know why he's emotional guy? If you follow about his life its very depressing, alone and lonely, its very sad but deep down it seems beautiful since he just do what he think he have to do. He never married, probably never had sex too I guess, he ever explains in interview in 2017 which you can find on youtube, he explain that he suffered from social anxiety, heart condition, plus losing both his parent and currently battle with psychotherapist. The fear making eye contact, socially awkward and fear of crowd which the reason he wearing mask to battle his anxiety on stage. But he can success due to his passion on hobby and music which make he one of the great guitarist out there. I suggest you to listen to all his music, that explains everything about his life. The most mysterious guitarist American ever had and the only guitarist who make more than 250 studio album.

Although I don't doubt his personal life was difficult, you can feel it in his music, I listened to the interview as well but he didn't go deep enough into it for us to simply assume he has absolutely no friends and no other human contact and completely virgin. If I'm not mistaken he laughed and said he had friends who have no idea about his career as a guitarist, they just think he plays. So tbh what your describing may be an exaggerated myth that is created by the mysteriousness that come with his identity.

Awesome playing, but what's the deal with the excess strings?
Virgil Vox...strings break quite often and when you replace them there isn't always a way to cut off the excess.
Michael Devlin most of his scales are the same pattern.. he is good but he's not as good as people think..

What a gorgeous clean tone he has, and articulation to match. Bucket head really has it all, meter like a clock, too, which is not always the case when ripping. I even enjoy hearing only the guitar when he plays.

Buckethead is clearly a badass. One specific thing I do appreciate, however, is that he knows when to change it up and not throw too much at one time. He will shred through with some incredible speed, but follow up with some nice blues-influenced licks to bring it back to Earth, so to speak. There's a certain degree of maturity there to keep a balance.

Well, he must be 30-40, and may even be classically taught and educated, hence his understanding, knowledge, and maturity.
Buckethead is just amazing. He is one of them guitarists who is so good that he can just let the guitar speak for himself and you dont even need word's because you can hear what he is feeling from the melodies. Im so glad that i found this amazing artist! Every song that he have made is just an piece of some fine artwork. And hes songs is so inspiring that im really gonna try my best at learning to play guitar that i can some day In the future try to play some of he's songs. He's guitar playing talents are just out of this world!

I have to thank you because I had never heard this musician. He is astounding and reminds of Lindsey Buckingham in that his songs have such melodic patterns that you can recall. What amazingly long fingers. Easily an octave spread on piano. I can understand wanting to be incognito for other reasons too. Stage fright happens even for those of us who just love playing. I had one experience where I could play but couldn't get my voice to work at all. Reading the thread I see he has become known. But let's allow this man to own the niche he has carved out. His hard work is right there in everything he plays. Thanks Fil! Rock.

I like old school guitarists like Jimi, Page, Beck and Clapton but this thing here is jaw dropping he is amazing and I like his image
Don't forget Duane Allman, and pretty much any Southern rock band's lead guitarist from the 70s.
As much as I love Yngwie, I prefer players like Buckethead, Vai and Satriani for long periods of listening. They offer more soulful rythmic playing.
Jason Brigham yes. Yngwie is someone I'd say is a great guitarist but not a great musician.
He and John McLaughlin did a dual interview and McLaughlin said at one point "You played some amazing s%*t".
It was the most polite way he could have said "You're technically great but it sounds like s%*t".
Personally I'd say in rock Eric Johnson is probably the best technically, but he, Satriani, Vai, Buckethead... they're all much more musical in my opinion than Yngwie.
My personal favorite shredder, he's the only one to where I can sit down and listen to a whole album. And his live shows are mesmerizing. I think he might be the greatest.

Flawless technique and excellent use of dynamics! One of the few shredders out there who knows the space between the notes is just as important as the notes themselves.
It's not just his sound..seeing him live..and his his stage performance is amazing..there's alot of badass guitar players that lack this presence on stage..it amazing in its own
Watched the entire video thinking that it was gonna be a 10min+ rant of BHead's lack of "technical ability" only to realize that i completely misread the title. Hahaha twas a very entertaining, appreciative, and observant video and i really enjoyes that one

I saw Buckethead play Tchaikovsky in Boulder, Colorado about 10 years ago. Trust me, you can't imagine what he did with Peter and the Wolf. The 1812 overture was godlike as well...He is a very special talent. Doesn't get his just due.
Agree with you 1000% brother the man is a musical genius and is so underappreciated it's not right. He has written so much beautiful music himself as well. I have listened to over 300 of his albums and while I cannot say I enjoy it all (I just do not like some of the thrash metal and avante garde material) he has produced so many beautiful pieces that it is impossible to ignore the depth and breadth of his composing genius as well as his unbelievably masterful guitar techniques.

I'm 53 and bucket head had a musical theory column in guitar player magazine when I was in my late 20s the bucket hides baldspots s well ,damn I'm fast but this guy's a machine and what's really amazing is he doesn't loose emotional context he actually speeds up to emphasize it
