I'm sure one day this will help build a contemporary music history course. When I took music history in 2009 there were so many holes in it... I don't think you can skip over players like Vai & Satch when it comes to contemporary music history. Not to mention all of the other guitarists that have been on Rick's channel! My two favorite guitarists and I'm still learning new things about them 25 years later! That is something special!

I was once drunk in KC and walked into the Grand Emporium I think it was. Joe was up on stage playing a solo. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy throw a bottle at him. He dodged it nicely. I couldn’t believe anyone would throw something at any musician let alone one of the best. The bouncer grabbed me and began to throw me out. While Joe kept playing with his left hand. He basically did sign language with his right hand to the bouncer. Told him no not him that guy beside him. All with one hand while still playing. It was amazing. The bouncer apologized. Shook my hand and so did Joe after the show. Cool dude. Very humble even though he’s probably earned the right to be arrogant. Class act. On and off the stage.

I know Joe is known for Surfing but I'll die on the hill that Crystal Planet is his greatest album ever, and one of the top guitar albums of all time. Every song, every chord, every solo and sound is darn near perfect. Crystal Planet, Love Thing, Lights of Heaven, Rasberry Jam, etc., all so so good. Vai's Passion and Warfare is up there with Crystal Planet too.

I was at the first G3. They filmed it as well. Minneapolis, MN. Anyway, I was able to go backstage and meet Steve Vai and Stu Hamm. I was waiting for Satch and Johnson to come out so I could get their autograph and say "Hello." It was getting late and my friend was outside in the cold waiting because he didn't have a backstage pass. So I decided to leave because I thought Satch wasn't coming. As I am leaving out the back door, Satch and his manager come down the stairs and where on their way out the door. I quickly handed him my CD booklet and his manager said "Ok. We can do one." so then Satch signed my Time Machine CD book. I didn't get to talk to him but at least got his autograph as he was leaving.
I was able to talk to Vai and he was super nice. I asked him about Bad Horsie. He plays the beginning in Crossroads and I asked if he had the song fully written at that time or wrote the intro for the movie and finished the song later. He said he had the whole song.

But there is a good reason why so many Italians-Americans took up the guitar through the 20th century-(and the history of jazz guitar especially attests to this)--they we immigrants who could not afford pianos. The affection for guitars (as opposed to the more traditional Italian affection for mandolins) persisted and has become somewhat of a cultural inheritance. I only have one Steve Vai story. I just happened to leave my credit card at the Orange PEEL one night. So when they reopened at 2 the next afternoon,I showed up to the venue with a large crowd outside for sound check… all these fans were confused when I walked right thru the door while I was asking what the crowd was here for. They said Steve Vai and I said I’m not that familiar with him. I sat in the corner and was mesmerized by his talent. Needless to say, the folks waiting outside were a bit jealous when I told them how much I just enjoyed that hour.

2005, I believe… I looked it up last night and saw that the previous night was ‘Monsters of Japan’… I used to be friends with some of them which explains why I left my cc… They were a quirky, punkisk version of KISS with tones of the WWF. It wasn’t my cup of tea but it led me to Steve Vai the next day… things I miss about Asheville, the 30 ways to change your day options available.

The final thank you's at the end are really moving. Jimi Hendrix playing, as Steve Vai said (around 34:20), was a "voice of God". I was at a workshop where engineer Eddie Kramer played Jimi's guitar solo from All Along the Watchtower, with everything else muted. The sound and energy from his guitar playing was so profound - everyone just sat in silence for a few moments afterward.

Time, patience, and it has finally all come together for Rick and I could not be more happy for him that finally he has broken into the complete respect category among our greatest musicians on the planet wanting to spend time to meet, tell their stories and most of all just hang as mutual friend musicians…. So happy that all his years of making such a great channel for all of us to witness has paid off….

Steve's right Rick. This channel and what it stands for and what you've brought to it will be treasured by people for a very long time I think.
I can't think of a setting where musicians could feel more comfortable and these conversations go down with such respect and genuine interest, curiosity and fascination for everyone involved.
Its a real testament to your knowledge, experience and character that these very special guests feel so at home and... Its like we get to hang out with them at a local guitar store but as if they're not even famous you know? You ask the sort of questions we'd ask as opposed to the standard stuff you might find in Guitar World magazine or something like that. All due respect to them, but a lot of times they just don't go deep enough.

"What do I need to learn or not learn. [ ] There has to be a real interest in order for there to be any retention". This is so true regardless whether it is music or anything else you choose to do in life. It is such a challenge these days to get young people to not just recognize their interests and chosen paths, but to commit in both time and energy to wanting and needing to know everything there is to know to succeed at those interests. Interviews such as this are absolutely priceless as a means to mentor and to realize that even the best among us sometimes struggle to be who they are.
And again, so much respect from Steve and Joe to Rick for who he is and what he is doing. So awesome.
