I get why you think that but it looks a lot better to me than most Wetherspoons and the quality and size of the food looks a lot better too. I won't ever eat in W'spoons but I definitely will go to that place when I'm there in a few weeks (I'm staying nearby) and will try all 3 of those meals - on separate visits! I just remembered I've been to the Hobgoblin before but I didn't eat anything that time.

Fish and chips used to be served in newspaper, it started in the second world war because of paper rations, but by the mid 1980s it was decided it was unsafe for the food to come into contact with newsprint without a greaseproof paper liner. Nowadays they're mostly served in plain paper. I think some places used fake newspaper wrappers for a while? I miss it, I remember the smell of newsprint blending with the vinegar adding some extra aroma to the dish.

I work around 20 year in hospitality. I worked in the UK and the Netherlands. There is a saying in hospitality, that you do 10 things right, and 1 thing wrong, and now is the night ruined for your guest. That first bar should reconsider even putting food like that on the menu if they have chef mike (microwave), cooking it for you up. If you do not have the kitchen, you could still do like little nuts, or other just snacks that pretty much come out a bag. Sometimes its better to serve easier food. As for bacon and why UK breakfast bacon is so good, is because its thicker sliced then the rest of the world. Its then put in a oven and cooked slower. Speaking as an Aussie that has enjoyed most of his experiences in Japan, I do love the wonderful dynamics between you 2 gents. As for. the book, I'll certainly think about ordering a copy. I'll subscribed, which I'm guessing will start generating more episodes to watch & enjoy.
The fish and chip place we grew up going to (town in Ontario Canada) used actual newspaper. It’s the only place I’ve known that uses real newspaper. Been to other decent places but they use food wrap printed like newspaper. ITS NOT THE SAME. Hobgoblin looks like the pubs we go to here. And I’m a cider girl. My friend also loves cider. It’s big here in Ontario. We have a bunch of craft breweries that do cider and there’s craft cider brewers. One in Toronto is very good, brickworks. My grandfathers English breakfast growing up (in England in the country in a small village) had the egg, tomato and the toast fried in the bacon grease. Which sounds like the greatest thing ever.
@@JunkFoodJapan It's definitely the taste of home. My son moved to New England from the UK, and he's got a stash of proper baked beans for his fry ups. Hasn't found anywhere doing Sunday roasts in CT, though they do have a local chippy that's not too bad. So he does his English breakfasts and Sunday dinners at home from scratch (aside from the beans!).
Two absolutely enthralling personalities coming together to captivate and entertain the Japanophile's of UA-cam... I love it, even more than the fish and chips in that second joint you frequented (and a tad more than the first...yuck). I also loved Nicholas Pettas' Blue Eyed Samurai book, which I read to my kids, chapter by chapter, as a bed time story... inspirational to day the least (as was Judd Reid's version).... I will certainly be dragging my arse out of bed to get on down to the bookstore to purchase a copy of Abroad in Japan, first thing in the morning... or maybe the afternoon, depending on how long this exquisite bottle of Caribbean spiced rum lasts and when my evening draws to an end...
Wychwoods are amazing. Hobgoblin is their most famous but they have an incredible variety of other drinks. I visited their brewery back when I used to be a pub landlord in the 90’s
Expats in Japan give The Hub such a hard time, but I love how it offers cheap drinks, cider, and decent snacks. I have never tried the mains there, though. I also really wish you went to Yokohama, where the best British pub is at, called Full Monty.
All 3 stores within the Roppongi Area. There's only 2 Hubs around there now. The one in this video, and the on in Kamiyacho station. The other hub in Roppongi closed back in 2020.

At least you get Sarsons vinegar!! Can't get that where I am in Southern Europe 😭😭 I actually brought two bottles back with me when I went back home to the UK for a visit in July 😆
You have a new subscriber old chap from Wolverhampton/Birmingham England. Very down to earth and Game for a laugh. Put lots of salt vinegar on the fish n chips and accompanied with curry sauce-tartar sauce-mushy peas NOT Ketchup. In the Sunday roast salt lots of pepper-English mustard-mint-sauce-apple sauce-stuffing-woustershire sauce otherwise it will be bland. The English breakfast season the food with salt pepper then Brown sauce plenty of, that’s how you eat the food brother. 😂🏴👍🏻👍🏻 PS you literally have to spend as much time adding flavour and seasoning yourself, as the cook who prepared the meal for you. That’s just the reality and culture.
Im from Northumberland now living in Australia, my wife is from yokohama. I mentioned malins to her, but we haven't been it would seem weird eating fish and chip's in Japan. Maybe next visit.
Wow, you two really make a great dynamic duo. This was a very enjoyable video. You got me chuckling and kept my attention which is a feat. The exchange was perfect and now I want battered cod and a pint of cider. Isn't it a thing though? The foreigner being invited to karaoke? I remember asking for directions and this group of men both gave me the directions and extended an invitation to karaoke at some private bar. First time I ever tasted champagne. I still got that one guy's business card. Been wondering if I was supposed to keep in touch.
Neat, cod isn't the most popular fish in fish and chip shops in australia (probably because of a lack of cod?) Here when you go in and buy fish and chips, 90% of the time you're eating Flake, a local term that covers a few different fish, but mostly it's shark meat.
It's actually quite nice, not too oily, nice flaky meat, and cheap as hell because very few people go out of heir way to buy the stuff.@@angelaortiz939
Cod is cold water fish so probably has to be frozen and shipped a long way to reach australia. In the UK there is also haddock in the chip shop which is a better fish than cod, it has better flavour and is less mushy. I have had frozen fish fillets using new zealand Hoki which had large chunky flakes and was just like cod, it didn't look like Flake looks in the videos I've seen
18:56 as a brit who has been making fried breakfasts for 30 years rule 1: pls always fry the bread in oil, dont toast it in a toaster, rule 2: use peeled tomatoes, rule 3: after some cooking, get the oil which has already cooked the bacon and peeled tomatoes and use it to cook the fried toast. the oil should be red from the tomatoe, that bacon oil mixed in the tomatoe juices will create the yummiest fried bread youve ever had.

I'm Greek and I think the full English breakfast is what humanity needs to progress.
Welcome here TOMODACHI
Just discovered this channel and I'm glad I did you definitely earned a new subscriber
Welcome aboard TOMODACHI
Such a banger episode. Mashed the like button immediately after watching it.
GOCHISOUSAMA DESU !
Hey welcome TOMODACHI and of course there will be more food stories coming soon
I guess it’s also the emotional attachment to the dish that makes it more appealing. Chris absolutely loved it
@@JunkFoodJapan It's definitely the taste of home.
Val, it was a sad day when they banned newspaper from fish and chips in the UK. It really isn't the same without it.
That’s creative !
There was an Irish bar in Shinjuku last time I was there that did pretty good fish n chips and Guinness.
Ah, Malins! Being Scottish, I've had the very best of fish & chips, back home. But Malins does fill the hole whenever I get my fish & chips craving!
Top rating TOMODACHI
Ever been to Blue Lagoon in Glasgow? Favourite chip shop since they destroy it in salt and vinegar. Haven't been in a few years though.
@@jamesmccomb9525 Im not even sure if its still there, i know it was under the Central Station bridge, you get some good food in there.
That Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding looked freakin delicious. I got super hungry watching that last third of this video. XD
I laugh so hard when you said "Guacamole right?" 😂
had no idea what it was... LOL
Nice share TOMODACHI, have you tried mixing that run with some ginger beer ?
Wychwoods are amazing. Hobgoblin is their most famous but they have an incredible variety of other drinks. I visited their brewery back when I used to be a pub landlord in the 90’s
Lol always nice seeing you collab with Dr. Broad.
The legendary boxing combo is back!
And smashing it !
Expats in Japan give The Hub such a hard time, but I love how it offers cheap drinks, cider, and decent snacks. I have never tried the mains there, though. I also really wish you went to Yokohama, where the best British pub is at, called Full Monty.
So does anyone know the Abroad in Japan book in audible is coming to America anytime soon? I can’t wait to listen
Chris is in the UK right now, he's got to record the audio version in the next week or so. So it shouldn't be too long.
All 3 stores within the Roppongi Area.
There's only 2 Hubs around there now. The one in this video, and the on in Kamiyacho station. The other hub in Roppongi closed back in 2020.
Good video mate.
Looking forward to the next one.
Been to the hobgoblin some days ago, its quite expensive but you can have a good time and me expats and so on. So i recommend!
It's my favourite couple again ! Chris and his sugar daddy on their adventures ! 🎉 /j
Great video !
LoL 😂 you had me at sugar daddy
When it comes to cider, my favorites are Bulmers and Thatchers.
Im going to LOVE this video i can already tell. Thanks Mr. Broad for introducing me to a new creator! I love Japan and I love food so its a win win for me. Excited to check out your other content too.
PS you literally have to spend as much time adding flavour and seasoning yourself, as the cook who prepared the meal for you. That’s just the reality and culture.
LoL. And welcome to the channel TOMODACHI
Asphalt cider, that explains the state of our roads😂😂
Love this video! Thanks for making it guys
I'm glad Nick collaborates with smaller UA-camrs like Mr. Affable Man
Right. You gotta take the next generation under your wing
First time watching this channel. I'm sold.
And you are welcome here TOMODACHI
They dont wrap fish and chips in newspaper nowadays since it isnt exactly paper and the inks are quite toxic nowadays.
bro you can tell Chris is in heaven with that full english by just how little he talks while eating it
😂
Im from Northumberland now living in Australia, my wife is from yokohama. I mentioned malins to her, but we haven't been it would seem weird eating fish and chip's in Japan. Maybe next visit.
I came here from a video about Andy Hug 😂 Love Chris and Nick, what a fighter! Absolutely legandary combo
That Sunday roast is PERFECT
Wow, you two really make a great dynamic duo. This was a very enjoyable video. You got me chuckling and kept my attention which is a feat. The exchange was perfect and now I want battered cod and a pint of cider.
Isn't it a thing though? The foreigner being invited to karaoke? I remember asking for directions and this group of men both gave me the directions and extended an invitation to karaoke at some private bar. First time I ever tasted champagne. I still got that one guy's business card. Been wondering if I was supposed to keep in touch.
I am sure he will be happy to hear from you! Try sending him a email
@@JunkFoodJapan Maybe I will before I visit again! it's been a long time, though.
Neat, cod isn't the most popular fish in fish and chip shops in australia (probably because of a lack of cod?) Here when you go in and buy fish and chips, 90% of the time you're eating Flake, a local term that covers a few different fish, but mostly it's shark meat.
Oh wow shark meat… how’s that go taste wise?
It's actually quite nice, not too oily, nice flaky meat, and cheap as hell because very few people go out of heir way to buy the stuff.@@angelaortiz939
I don’t like shark meat it’s got a sour smell to it, from the amoniac.
Yeah Hoki is different for sure, pretty popular frozen fish here since we don't fish it locally.@@wullaballoo2642
How many Sit Ups is that Chris? That was a heck of a lot of food! Glad to see to handsome blokes having such a good time! 😁 👍
It was a good night out for sure
Hey Nick, what was your wife having at 15:05?! Looks interesting and not sure what most fish and shops sell that looks like that!
Cheese and onion pastie! ❤ it was very nice 👍
Hey Wife! happy to see you are checking in too
18:56 as a brit who has been making fried breakfasts for 30 years rule 1: pls always fry the bread in oil, dont toast it in a toaster, rule 2: use peeled tomatoes, rule 3: after some cooking, get the oil which has already cooked the bacon and peeled tomatoes and use it to cook the fried toast. the oil should be red from the tomatoe, that bacon oil mixed in the tomatoe juices will create the yummiest fried bread youve ever had.
YOu had me at Bacon fried bread... TOMODACHI now I am hungry
