Another nice video joe. The reason I bought the Eskimo(I went with the 9416i, plenty of room for cots) is because of the removable windows that can accommodate a stove pipe. I set mine up very similar to yours joe, except I used sheet metal instead of welding fabric. I also drilled out the stove pipe on two sides near the top and installed eye bolts and ran heavy string down to the plastic eyes that are located on the sides of the tent. This stabilized the pipe nicely. Also, putting a hinged plywood floor down prevents slipping around on melted snow and ice. Cant wait for the next fishing video!
I was wondering how you guys cope with the fumes from the heaters and lanterns and such. It gives my family headaches if we breathe that for too long. You are a smart man for using another method of heating. You know it can't be good for you.

After reading the comments everyone seems to have good ideas about fire safety. Your pipe support stand was a great idea but I have to add my two cents. Keep the change. You've addressed the weight problem of the pipe exiting the tent with your stand and chain configuration. But, you have a long stack swinging in the wind. I was thinking you could use two more chains attached to the top of the pipe and tied into your pipe stand in a V configuration. But, you're the Master and I hope to see the final design in action.
I am not much for going out fishing on real windy days and if it was to get windy I would remove the top piece of pipe. As long as the wind is blowing away from the house sparks would not be a problem. If like you said I do have trouble I can cable or chain it on each side down to the pull out loops on the shelters sides. Until I get out there and use the wood stove I will now know.
Well done Joe, looks like it should work just fine. We did something very similar, and man oh man.. Life is good when your heat is from wood. It just seems to warm the ol bones up like nothing I've ever seen or felt replicated. Another plus from burning wood is the fact it'll warm you up twice, 1st when your out cutting, and then of course while your burning. I saw the same thing a few years back, the person coated the inside and the outside with silicon to help seal and add more fire resistance. Very nice job.
I did this myself last year and it is awesome...i dont use it to fish just to winter camp it does not take a very big stove to heat a tent...way too big of stove is my thinking...omg! your going to sweat like you cant believe!!! use a 3 inch pipe at the very most. also try silicone baking sheets and cut to fit. or stove jack you dont need the metal ring attached too heavy...just a silicone opening with the pipe going through it. put a piece of welding blanket jsut below the stove jack to prevent the heat from the stove.
Hey Joe have you ever thought about buying one of those small suitcase style generators? About 2,000 Watts should be enough to run a good forced air electric heater inside your shanty. Think about it no firewood no having to wait for the wood stove to cool down no disposal of the ash. Quick, odorless, quiet, efficient, and safe heat. You can still bring a very small propane grill to cook on.
I did similar this fall while using my pop up for deer hunting. My hole placement was 'as far from as all edges as possible.' So, a little lower than yours and it worked well. Exterior tripod was needed, much like you did. The window cover now below the window can be folded up behind itself with the corner tucked into the bottom corner of the neighboring window. Just held up by the velcro. This is to prevent it from melting from the heat from the back of the stove. You will be too hot. Better than not being hot enough.
Good video Joe!! I can understand about using the gas type heaters. That wood stove will make it nice, and if you want to fry up some fish that you catch you can.
Wow!!! Nxt winter I’m gonna have all the supplies to do this with my big Eskimo pop up!! I use the sunflower and long as I go outside few times I’m ok!, but nxt season a wood stove!

position the tent so the wind blows any embers away from the tent. that work mat you have by your workbench, put some of that down over the ice to save your feet. not under the stove of course... awesome project, look forward to the test to see how it works.
Oh yea, that was a great alteration and upgrade. Nasty to think of the carbon you inhaled with the propane stove...smart move to switch it out. You can also cook on that stove top if needed. Cheers!
I wonder if one of those tent stove jacks like what’s on outfitter tents would work. Your Cabelas outfitter tent that you take duck hunting has one of those with the rubber gasket in it. I know you can buy those from Cabelas. But anyhow. Looks like what you’ve constructed will do the job just fine though. Love watching what you come up with. Can’t wait for the next ice fishing trip. We made a wood stove out of a 40 lb. propane tank for our ice shanty and it’s the biggest otter shanty can get . It works great you can sit there fishing in shorts if you wanted to . We have stayed from Friday night to Sunday afternoon, might have to run in get some more bait . We have 3-4 cots , table , stove , lights , small generator.

When I was a kid my Dad had a fish house and used the old fuel oil or oil or kerosene drip type heater. I would love to find one of them. The system I made in this video would work fine for that. Back then the fish house always smelled the same, I can remember it clearly. It smelled like kerosene.
I along with several of my friends have in the past or do live in Minnesota do you know how much crap has gotten done or figured out or destroyed because it’s winter and it’s something to do LOL I’m glad you got it constructive
How did it work? I was thinking you could for safety add a free standing back wall heat shield and the fact the pipe is long keeps embers from tent perhaps some type of spark arrest, I will use some of your idea's. Thank you
i am sure that will work out just fine i see a lot of people using those fish houses with wood stoves they do just fine there is a guy on youtube steve wells he does a lot of videos camping in a fish tent with a wood stove he used for a whole winter camping every weekend it wouldn't hurt to bring a carbon monoxide tester either

They are not water proof. If it rains (if you use it for any type of non winter camping) you need to waterproof the seams or bring a tarp. Otherwise it works real well. You do not need that big of a stove, it gets hot fast
I have s 2 man popup iceman that I use as a cigar tent. Been looking for vids to add a good heat source. I was leaning toward a buddy heater but this is more what I really want. Cigars and steaks!
Because I did not have any rivets and I wasn't going to drive 15 miles one way to buy some and waste an hour of my time when there was absolutely no reason to when the wire will be just as effective.
Just a suggestion for your vent piping. The crimped end of the pipe ALWAYS must go in the direction of the flue gases NOT against them. Connect the stove with uncrimped end and work your way out to rain cap.
Ideally that would be nice but this will only be run maybe 5 or 6 hours at a time. I am not in the least bit worried. I will not be installing a rain cap either.
Hello, I'm new to your You-tube site, having just discovered you yesterday. Wow what an amazing story you have shared with everyone for so long. I have watched this episode, as well as about a dozen or so others, many many more to go. I would like to ask you a question about The Tent. I live in Australia so have no knowledge of what it is to live with snow, (we do have it but I have never seen it). Watching a video earlier and seeing you walk the path from the Tent to your outhouse, I wondered why there isn't a covered in pathway. Maybe something with shade cloth on the sides to help reduce the amount of snow you would have to shovel every day. Sorry if this is a ridiculous question. Thank you

It will melt some ice just like the propane heater does, i mean not enough to be worried at all but the floor (ice) will be wet. I may put it on something to reflect that heat away from the ice under the stove. I have not gotten that far yet.
The wood heat is going to feel so much better than the propane heat out ice fishing. Now you just will have to worry about melting the ice in the shack. Next will be a removable floor system to keep your feetwarm.
I would recommend using a carbon monoxide detector when using any camp space heater. The unvented 'buddy heater' type of heater vent the combustion gasses directly into the (probably) confined space you are trying to heat. It is best to know what is going on. Carbon monoxide is odorless.
I agree. They are rated for use indoors and are the most used portable propane heater ever made. While most people get no ill effects, I could tell I had been in a room with a non vented heater.
There are vented RV furnace type heaters, but they aren't cheap. Also, these heaters require 12V DC. These heaters are intended for heating an RV or vehicle, and have a heat exchanger and a flu like a home furnace. Some models are lightweight and small. I don't know if they could be adapted for a tent. It would be kind of overkill anyway. However, if I was heating a small trailer or a small cabin with propane, I would want something like that.
Does it get too hot with that stove. Buying thermal shanty and have an old grill propane tank I could make a stove with. Just didn't know if the thing would run us out of the shanty
Wood stoves also emit carbon monoxide so be careful. Do I ever love that ice fishing tent! What a brilliant thing it is. They're coming up with some amazing equipment these days.
This is not a stove that will be burning for days and also if you do it the way you are saying (which is the correct way) I will be dealing with creosote running down the pipe and burning since this stove will have to be burning at a very low heat since the area it is heating is so small. You are correct in what you are saying but in this application it does not work well at all. I have done this many times in the past. You learn as you go. I am less worried about any smoke that may escape (and it really wont) and more worried about the creosote.
Pop rivets with some 1" fender washers spaced every 4". Careful frying anything in the tent. The grease will eventually coat the top of it... Don't ask how I know. Better to stick with heating a can of beef stew, a pot of tea etc.
CRH is correct, also, it isnt going to have to get any hotter than a propane heater, it only has to heat it inside. Some ice will melt yes like always but it is not that big of a deal. Something under the stove like CRH suggested would be a big help.

You should make sure you have a spark arrestor on there too I watched video where guy put a stove in his tent and a spark touch the tent and melted it instantly

Joe...put some fireboard under the legs of the stove to elevate it up....plus that would help with the ice melting around the stove. Just an idea😃

I've got the same stove for when I go deer hunting in a tent. I use those 4 hour logs so I don't have to get up every hour to stoke the fire back up.

Joe why donr you rivet it on the welding blanket. Just cut one inch strips of sheet metal on the back and rivet together. Just a thought.

I do not know the model name but it is the one that is almost 120 inches x 120 inches. It is also an insulated model.
Just a heads up but galvanized stove pipes will off gas. You'll wan the painted black stove pipes.

Joe put a sheet metal plate on the outside and pop rivet it together.
If I did that it would not be removable, if it can not be removed the pop up fish house can no longer be popped down and fit into the bag.
No you have the same way as you do now but just put a plate on the other side. Make a sandwich and pop it in and out. Everything stays as you have it.

Are you using a galvanized exhaust pipe for house hold ductwork?

I don't know if they could be adapted for a tent. It would be kind of overkill anyway. However, if I was heating a small trailer or a small cabin with propane, I would want something like that.
Does it get too hot with that stove. Buying thermal shanty and have an old grill propane tank I could make a stove with. Just didn't know if the thing would run us out of the shanty
Try using a 45 instead of 2 90. Place 45 in stove ,then adjust straight pipe to match window. Just a suggestion.
Wood stoves also emit carbon monoxide so be careful. Do I ever love that ice fishing tent! What a brilliant thing it is. They're coming up with some amazing equipment these days.
You should have the crimps going in the direction of the flow on pipe like that:)
This is not a stove that will be burning for days and also if you do it the way you are saying (which is the correct way) I will be dealing with creosote running down the pipe and burning since this stove will have to be burning at a very low heat since the area it is heating is so small. You are correct in what you are saying but in this application it does not work well at all. I have done this many times in the past. You learn as you go. I am less worried about any smoke that may escape (and it really wont) and more worried about the creosote.
Pop rivets with some 1" fender washers spaced every 4". Careful frying anything in the tent. The grease will eventually coat the top of it... Don't ask how I know. Better to stick with heating a can of beef stew, a pot of tea etc.

cut up a old bed liner and reuse the floor to help insulate the heat from ice to cut down on melting
Does that make it too hot? Do you have to keep moving the tent around for melting ice ?
He could just use a piece of gypsum board to insulate it both underneath and behind.
CRH is correct, also, it isnt going to have to get any hotter than a propane heater, it only has to heat it inside. Some ice will melt yes like always but it is not that big of a deal. Something under the stove like CRH suggested would be a big help.

You should make sure you have a spark arrestor on there too I watched video where guy put a stove in his tent and a spark touch the tent and melted it instantly
